WHY ARE WE IGNORING WORKPLACE WELLBEING?

By Lizzie Benton, Liberty Mind

I

have a friend who hates her job so much that she often considers throwing herself down the stairs in order to avoid work.

And it got me thinking, how has a company let their workplace culture become so toxic that their own employee is willing to selfharm in order to not go to work? Unfortunately, I know too many people who feel like this, and the fact is many businesses simply don’t have the time to support their employees in the workplace. Even HR departments are now often tasked with juggling their roles with other company tasks such as marketing, or general admin. The real focus on people isn’t there. In an evolving society, where we are becoming increasingly conscious of our impact on the world, we also have to be aware of our impact on the people around us, and as a business that doesn’t just mean your customers, but your employees. When we spend so much time at work, it’s devastating to think so many of us are 4

QueenBee Autumn 2018

sat there wishing our lives away, let alone struggling in silence. The statistics shout this out loud, as a report from the mental health charity Mind revealed that 65% of employees feel scared, embarrassed or unable to speak to their employer about mental health. If we really want people to feel well at work, we need to create an environment that gives people the opportunity to be themselves. This is precisely why I established Liberty Mind, to support businesses in creating effective company cultures, and provide in-house 121 employee mentoring that can help people with issues that go beyond the workplace. We need to change the way we see work, work is part of life, and life is part of work the archaic separation needs to stop. If your business wants to have happier employees and not have to keep paying out for high recruitment fees, then you need to invest in support and become more conscious of the role you truly play in people’s lives ^ > www.libertymind.co.uk

Talking to your child about social media and the internet

I

n our ever changing technological world, smartphones and computers put the whole online world at our fingertips, but not always in a good way. At The Young Peoples Counselling Service worries around social media and gaming seems to be prevalent for so many young children and parents we meet. It is so important to have conversations with your child from a young age, the internet can offer huge opportunities. Children have the chance to learn, research the world, play games, have fun and connect with family. However it is important to help them to use the online world in a way that’s safe and positive for their mental health. That’s why it’s good to have regular conversations about the internet and social media from a young age. Try and make it as ordinary as talking about their day at school, or something you’ve watched on TV. Make time for these conversations in your normal routine – while you’re playing together, cooking or walking to school.

Children often look to their parents as role models, so lead by example. Behave as you want your child to behave. If parents check their phones constantly, have them out at mealtimes, or play violent games in front of their children, then it’s likely that their children might do the same. Share about your own less positive experiences online. If you felt pressured by the ‘perfect’ photos people share on social media, then being open with your child about this might be a good thing. It could help them to understand that the ‘perfect’ images people share on social media shouldn’t always be taken at face value. Set realistic boundaries: sit down as a family and develop some rules about internet use. Try to agree how much time they will spend online. For example, you might want to agree that they shouldn’t go online an hour before bed or use a phone/tablet during the night, as this can affect their sleep. You can often set timers on tablets or mobiles to limit internet use. Set up parental controls to stop your child from accessing harmful content, but be aware that your child may well learn how to get round these. That’s why it’s important to make sure your child is able to make good decisions for themselves. Sites such as OURPACT act as a fantastic tool for parents, if the boundaries set are being pushed or broken. This is for your child’s benefit, it’s not to be mean but to keep them safe and support their mental health ^ > YPCS offers free support for 11-16 year olds in the Peterborough area. We are a local professional counselling service that is free and accessible. If you need advice or support please get in touch on 0800 634 4395.

Can you get maternity pay if you are self employed?

By Bird & Co Certified Public Accountants, www.birdandco.ltd

Y

ou may think that, as a self employed person, you won’t get any financial help when you’re pregnant and spending time at home looking after your new baby. However, there is a social security benefit called Maternity Allowance that you may be entitled to (please note that this article does not apply to limited companies, it is just for the self employed). This article also only really applies if your self employment is your only source of income. If you also work as an employee part-time, you may be eligible for Statutory Maternity Pay via your employer, in which case you can’t get Maternity Allowance. So, let’s assume that you don’t work for anyone else. Maternity Allowance is paid for up to 39 weeks. The most you can receive each week is £145.18 (based on 2018-2019 rates). In order to qualify for the maximum £5,662 (39 weeks @ £145.18) you need to be able to answer “yes” to various questions - see our news section on our website www.birdandco.ltd for the fuller version. If you say “yes” to the first question, and are due to pay Class 2 NIC’s but haven’t actually made your payments yet, you will only get £27 a week for 39 weeks.

8

QueenBee Autumn 2018

So, how do you get your Maternity Allowance and when can you stop working? In order to make your claim, you need to complete a form MA1. You can submit this at the start of the 14th week before the week your baby is due. You can either stop work then and start claiming Maternity Allowance, or you can continue working for longer if you choose, right up to the date your baby is born and only start your Maternity Allowance from then. The important point to remember is that you can’t continue to work (even for yourself) once you start claiming your Maternity Allowance. The exception to this is 10 days throughout the period of your maternity leave that count as “Keeping In Touch” (KIT) days. Finally, there’s no requirement to stop working for the full 39 weeks. Unfortunately, though, once you go back to working, your Maternity Allowance payments stop ^ > For more information please visit the Bird & Co website www.birdandco.ltd or call on 01733 850989. FEEL GREAT PILATES By Kathryn Grace

Be Appy! Some more great Apps for you By Lucy Dean

I

went along to meet the lovely Milena Hunt of Feel Great Pilates to experience a one-to-one equipment based pilates session. Milena is a studio equipment qualified Pilates teacher and a member of the BCPA and has a truly impressive custom-built Pilates studio in Peterborough with specialised equipment and underfloor heating. Having never done equipment based pilates before I wasn’t sure what to expect. Milena showed me that by working different muscle groups using “The Reformer” equipment produces faster results. Pushing and pulling with legs or arms against the resistance of the springs, carriage and body weight is highly strength building, aids in body alignment, posture and muscle strengthening.

Pilates is a mental and physical conditioning programme, which changes the body from within by targeting the deep postural muscles and improving body awareness. It restores proper alignment, promotes strength and flexibility, and creates a lean, toned body. Control, concentration, flowing movements, centre, precision and breathing - the six principles of pilates helps develop a strong core and improves co-ordination and balance. > Find out more at www.feelgreatpilates.com 10

QueenBee with Alexandra Agboke

Alex Agboke is QueenBee’s self-styled fashion agony aunt - she can answer all of your questions and offer top notch advice. So ask away... she’s here to help! Hi Alex, can you help me find a stylish Autumn coat? I always find the ‘in between seasons’ hard when keeping warm (but not too warm) and moving away from the ‘mum at the school gate in a Boden style mac!’ Thanks Becki Alex Dressing appropriately in the UK is not an easy task, so I’m right with you Becki! Fortunately, this season the big trend is ‘the biker jacket’ and it’s everywhere. I even saw a nice one on the fashion aisles at Sainsbury. They range from leather to faux and suede, and they are practical enough for a typical autumn day as well as suiting most women and most ages. It’s predominantly an urban style piece - it gives instant glamour and with so much variety available now it’s going to be a lot easier to find something that suits your shape and personality. I am an “inverted triangle” or a “carrot”

(not a fan of being called a vegetable but it creates a picture I guess!). This means my shoulders are broader than my hips so I have to be be careful not to look top heavy. This season I will be looking for a more classic style and one with very fitted shoulders. Instagrammers have been donning these for years so I’m not surprised this trend has hit the high street. They are so versatile. You can wear them over jumpers or with smart shirts, jeans and even floral dresses, depending on your style personality. I am also a fan of buying one in a brighter colour to make the simplest of outfits pop! Wearing one of these on the school run definately ticks my box for stylish practicality as well as giving you a modern look. > Have you got a fashion dilemma or

REIKI AND IT’S BENEFITS by Lexie Wrightson

R

eiki is a Japanese method of stress reduction and relaxation that also promotes healing. The tradition was founded by Mikao Usui in the early 20th century and evolved as a result of his research, experience and dedication. The word Reiki is made of two Japanese words - Rei which means "God's Wisdom or the Higher Power" and Ki which is "life force energy". Reiki can be translated as "spiritually guided life force energy." Reiki is a simple, natural and safe method of spiritual healing and self-improvement that everyone can use and learn. It is not aligned to any religion or belief system. It can be effective in helping a wide range of illness and usually creates a beneficial effect. It has also been found to work in conjunction with many other medical or therapeutic techniques to relieve side effects and promote recovery. People have found that Reiki might help: • Reduce and cope better with stress • To enhance the effects of other treatments and therapies • Enhance relaxation, confidence and bring peace into their life • Bring balance, harmony, and clarity. • Improve concentration and focus • Increase their sense of calm and well-being

Angelic Reiki Angelic Reiki is a safe, natural, high frequency, multidimensional system of Angelic Healing and consciousness expansion that allows connection through the Angelic Kingdom of Light to your Soul energy in order to bring through powerful healing. This is not aligned to any religion or belief system. During a healing the healer is simply a channel whereby the energy of the angelic kingdom is passed to the recipient through his or her hands. Clients have a profoundly relaxing experience. The healing energy is channelled from the Angelic Realms via Healing Angels, Archangels, Ascended Masters and Galactic Healers. Treatments During a both a reiki or Angelic reiki treatment you remain fully clothed, if you are unable to lie down, treatment can be given in a sitting position. The main purpose is for you to be as comfortable as possible. Relaxing music is played while the practitioner gently places their hands nonintrusively treating the whole person rather than specific symptoms. > For more details visit www.lexiewrightson.com Contact Lexie on 07915078843 or email Abwrightson@hotmail.co.uk QueenBee Autumn 2018

ANNA’S BODY TRANSFORMATION BY ANNA SUNDERLAND & HORSPOWER GYM, YAXLEY

I

f anyone had said to me two years ago that I would be a personal trainer at a local gym and competing in an elite body building competition… I would have laughed out loud! I was never into exercise. Then in August 2017, I decided to go and see what all the hype was about regarding the Horspower gym, which had just opened in Yaxley. My husband was a member and trained all the time. I was fed up with my weight and was getting over a worrying health scare, which really made me look at my whole lifestyle. I was a sucker for fad diets promising to make you ‘lose a stone in three days’. I ended up in hospital with a suspected stroke after following one of them! It was one of the scariest times of my life and a big wake up call.

The training I started doing was mainly strength training with very little cardio and the first two weeks was super hard. But I started to notice changes in my size, which made me stick at it. The hardest challenge was not getting on the scales! I did but ended up so upset as my weight was going up! I felt so despondent but it was only when I started to see my body changing that I started to change my habits. I didn’t change my diet but slowly cut back on foods and made healthier choices. By January 2018, I was training most days so I took a course and became a personal trainer. I kept it secret from everyone, as I don’t like to fail, and knew I had to pass an exam to become official – I am someone who used to laugh at the gym bunnies at the school gates! I only ever wore heels! My pictures are not edited and show the transformation I’ve made over time. >

QueenBee Autumn 2018

QueenBeefitness Lee at Horspower has been inundated with local ladies wanting to change their bodies, so if nothing else, I’ve motivated these women into building body strength. So many of us shy away from weights, but I can honestly say that weights change your body. I’m now in a sixteen-week prep for the Pure Elite World Show in Margate in November. This is a massive challenge for me with work, four children and a very busy training schedule. I eat six meals a day and I train one and a half to two hours a day, six days a week. Let’s see where this takes me! ^

ANNA’S BODY n TRANSFORMatio in amazing!

Horspower Gym opened in July 2017 on Holme Road Yaxley. We were named second-best gym in Peterborough after being open for only eight months and have now moved to a bigger premises in Discovery Park. The Gym developed around its users, the people of Yaxley mainly. We are planning to keep moving forward and developing. We specialise in body recomposition (swapping fat for muscle) and have helped those that want to lose size to do so and those that want to gain size to get bigger. We offer a personal service that the larger commercial gyms fail to do. Anna had been an inspiration to many women and her pure determination and commitment amazes me! How I make it work

L

ucy Grace is our green-fingered allotment manager and busy mum of two, also running a handmade jewellery business, EarthCrafts. Advocating all things natural, she also makes her own organic cleaning products, salves and herbal remedies. We’ve managed to catch her for five minutes to dig a little deeper into her passions.

QA QB You’re a young mum – younger than most people on the allotment! When did you start gardening? My first garden really inspired me and I saw so much potential in it. I was 21 and it was the first place to call my own, with my daughter who was one at the time. I used to find bricks and wood and make little fences, growing flower borders around the patio.

24

QueenBee Autumn 2018

I’m not sure when I decided to then dig up a third of the lawn to plant a veg-patch, but I did! I was eager to get stuck in, despite having no experience - at the time I didn’t realise just how big a part of my life it would become! QB Tell us about your business, EarthCrafts... I started making jewellery as a therapeutic craft, but I soon became fascinated with crystals themselves. I’m an avid researcher and spend a lot of time studying holistic practices and the Universe we live in - it all ties in together and I love expressing my passion through the jewellery.

EarthCrafts is more like a project for myself, aside from the family - I think that’s important. It keeps me feeling motivated, especially now I’m building a website – I’m excited to be joining it up with a blog! QB How do you balance all this with family life? Sometimes it can be tricky - there’s no secret, or if there is, tell me! I’m a busy, creative type of person which keeps me going but passion, patience and perseverance are all words that come to mind ^ > earthcraftsshop.etsy.com Instagram: @earth_crafts Facebook: @earthcrafts

TEAR TROUGH FILLERS refreshes and rejuvenates tired eyes Dark circles and hollowing under the eyes is a giveaway of age and can make you look as if you’ve been up all night.

BEFORE

AFTER

Because of the sagging and shrinking of the delicate skin around the tear trough, it causes eye bags and dark shadows, which is hard to conceal with makeup. Smoothing those shadows and eye bags will help you look as if you’ve had a good night’s sleep, every night! Tear trough filler can give you an instant result as the dark shadows get ‘plumped out’ for a naturally renewed, rejuvenated face and a far more ‘awake’ look. Dr Beverley Brabbins of Newborough Cosmetic Skin Clinic in Peterborough offers this amazing treatment - the simple procedure that refreshes and rejuvenates tired eyes.

anywhere there is hair it can be eradicated forever by electrolysis. June has a particular interest in promoting electrolysis for ladies who suffer from Polycystic Ovary Syndrome. QueenBeebeauty WE’RE DELIGHTED TO INTRODUCE LOCAL LADY, REBECCA JONES, A PROFESSIONAL MAKE-UP ARTIST & NEW REGULAR CONTRIBUTOR TO QUEENBEE MAGAZINE!

ABOUT ME So, lets start with I LOVE MAKEUP! That is why I trained nearly thirteen years ago. I actually did my training alongside studying accountancy. I’ve been doing make-up alongside my accountancy ever since I qualified. I have always been a freelance make-up artist and love every second of it. When my daughter was born last May, I decided to leave employment in accountancy and set up my own accounting business to give me the opportunity to watch her grow and be there for her. My favourite make-up appointments are editorial and bridal. But I also love my one to one’s with clients where I teach how to apply make-up. I also run make-up artistry workshops and get to meet so many new people. I hope you enjoy my article this month and the ones to follow.

Make-up & mature

I

do not mean the over fifties… this applies to thirty and above. Yes you read it right!

No matter what your age is, full make-up can still enhance your looks if done in the correct way. It’s just a simple question of knowing which products you need and how to apply them. So, mature skin and makeup... Make-up can make us look older than we really are after a certain age. Instead of detracting from wrinkles and sagging contours, it can accentuate them. Before long, the only make-up we dare to wear, if any, is tinted moisturiser and a blush or no make-up at all. These products work well for women of all ages. They help to even out the skin tone, add colour to the cheeks and appear light on the skin. But when you’ve got your lovely new outfit on to go out, you understandably want a little more on your face. After all, what's the point of a beautiful, luxurious gown and chic accessories, if your face is practically naked? 32

QueenBee Autumn 2018

TEN BASIC TIPS FOR THE MATURE WOMAN: > Before you can apply make-up, your skin must be in tip-top condition. Even if it’s no longer ‘flawless’ - nobody has naturally flawless skin, we all have imperfections. Age spots and broken capillaries are easy to cover up, but only if the skin is exfoliated and well hydrated. Exfoliating improves overall skin texture, which determines how evenly your make-up will go on. Moisturiser plumps the skin up to make lines and wrinkles less prominent. For best results, see the skincare regime for mature skin. > A foundation primer is essential for mature skin. This will help mask lines, open pores and wrinkles – the perfect base to applying foundation. > The best foundation is one that provides just the right coverage you need while allowing you to keep concealer to a minimum. I would recommend leaving concealer until after the foundation application. Too much product on the skin risks accentuating fine lines. A loose and very fine compact setting powder > is less likely to collect in lines and wrinkles. For best results, gently apply with a large powder brush in circular motions smoothed over the entire face. This will set the foundation. When wearing blush, soft colours like rose and > apricot are more flattering to the skin. They are fresh and youthful so gives the appearance of a younger looking face. > Apply a lip liner prior to lipstick. Go for a colour that matches your lipstick or is one shade lighter. Cover the entire lip area to ensure your

QueenBeebeauty

skin... By Rebecca Jones MUA

lipstick lasts longer and less chance of the lipstick bleeding. If you have thin lips then I would recommend one shade darker than your lipstick so it gives the appearances of a fuller lip without looking fake. Satin finish lipsticks don’t accentuate lip wrinkles. They will flatter the outer part of the lips without emphasising the wrinkle lines. Try and keep to natural colours and if going for a pink or red hue keep it warm and flattering to your skin tone. For a softer and more flattering finish, > apply the lipstick straight from the tube instead of with a brush. Gently tap it onto the lip area and slowly smudge your lips together. If black eyeliner and mascara seem too harsh, > create a more diffused look with brown or dark grey. This can be very flattering especially if you have natural grey hair or have a very fair complexion. Try switching liquid and gel eyeliner for an > eyeshadow. Start with a very precise brush head and gently tap on the eyeshadow. Use a dark grey or brown and run along the upper and lower lashes. This will give the illusion of thicker lashes without any harshness. > Use only powder eye shadow. Try to stay away from cream eye colours. They will gather into the creases and wrinkles, which is not a flattering look. Keep the colours of the eyes natural and not too dark. If you have hooded eyelids the best thing to do is work the darker eyeshadow in the crease and just above the crease area. This will open up the eye area without emphasising the eyelid ^ > Visit www.rebeccajonesmua.co.uk QueenBee Autumn 2018

THREADING WITH UNIQUE BROWS By Charlene Bryant

I

went along to Unique Brows in Yaxley to try out having my eyebrows threaded. It’s a safe, natural, simple and fast method of facial hair removal and eyebrow shaping with a cotton thread, giving your eyebrows shape and definition. Rina from Unique Brows took time to discuss the look that I was trying to achieve. I have sensitive my eyes but Rina reassured me that they use organic cotton which didn’t irritate my eyes at all.

I was really pleased with the natural look, shape and colour she achieved and would highly recommend Rina to family and friends. > For a ppointments: call/text Rina 07584 687707. Based in Yaxley. Facebook: UniqueBrowsbyRina

A recipe for self-love By Milena Hunt from Feel Great Soap

“LOVE AND TRUST YOUR BODY” LOTION Ingredients: 100 grams organic extra virgin coconut oil 30 grams organic jojoba oil 15 grams beeswax 200 ml tube organic 100% aloe vera gel 10 drops geranium essential oil 5 drops melissa essential oil

D

o your eyes glaze over when you hear the word “self-love” because you aren’t even sure what it actually means? On my own journey towards self-love, I discovered that I had to move gently and give myself plenty of time and space to relax into self-acceptance. I learnt to listen to my body and give it nourishment in the form of nutrition, movement and skincare. I wish I could bottle how amazing appreciating your body for what it is feels like, and the closest I came to doing so was creating the “Love and Trust your body” lotion recipe. One of the key ingredients in it is Geranium essential oil, known as the Oil of Love and Trust. The lotion smells beautiful and owes its deeply moisturising effect to aloe vera and the oils of jojoba and coconut ^ > For more, please subscribe to my newsletter at www.feelgreatsoap.com

38

QueenBee Autumn 2018

How to make: 1. Place the coconut oil, jojoba oil and beeswax into a glass jug, steeped in boiling water, to melt. 2. Take the melted oils out of the boiling water and allow the mixture to cool, until you can comfortably hold the glass jug. 3. While the mixture is still fluid and warm, squeeze the aloe vera gel straight into it, and whip to a creamy consistency with the balloon whisk. 4. Add the essential oils into the emulsion and mix again thoroughly. 3. Immediately transfer the lotion into a glass container of choice. Allow it to cool completely before putting the lid on. Store in a cool, dark place. To apply: 1. Use as you would any lotion. It works magic on the body after a shower or a bath. 2. Enjoy how quickly the lotion gets absorbed by the skin and how happy and healthy it looks straightaway.

CRUELTY-FREE BEAUTY

T

here’s absolutely no justifiable reason why any animal should suffer cruel and painful lab tests just so a beauty product can be safely used by us humans. Cruelty-free makeup products are kinder to animals and more often than not, our skin too. Cruelty-free means that products were not tested on animals during the production process. However, please remember that cruelty-free does not always mean that products are vegan! Finding brands and products that are cruelty-free can be difficult and you’ll be surprised at how many big, established companies still test on animals. To make it a little easier you can

visit crueltyfreeproducts. co.uk/cruelty-free-makeupbrands-uk for a full list of all the cruelty-free brands that are available in the UK. You can also look out for the PETA-approved or Leaping Bunny logo, as these also represent cruelty-free products. So why go cruelty-free? On top of supporting the welfare of animals, you’ll find that cruelty-free products tend to have less ingredients in them, meaning they’re generally better for your skin. When you were applying your make-up or skincare this morning, did you really give a seconds thought about what was going onto your face? While we all love highpigmented eyeshadows and long-lasting lipsticks,

you don’t have to sacrifice quality when shopping for cruelty-free products. Be a conscientious shopper and know what you’re buying when you’re shopping for skincare and make-up next time. Take a little longer to read labels before making a purchase and you’ll feel so much better about yourself for making an environmentally-friendly decision ^ Some cruetly free/vegan High Street brands: Barry M Soap & Glory Collection (Boots) Gosh (Superdrug) B. Long lasting kissable lips! I love a lippy that lasts, without making your lips feel like they have had a cheese grater across them. It’s not an easy task to find as most of them have a top coat which is very drying. However, I have come across a makeup range in good old M&S called Diego Dalla Palma and let me tell you... the lipsticks are fab! They have a variety of colours and they last through a meal and a wine without the drying effect!

NAISSANCE HEMP OIL Multi functional at its best! This has to be one of the top multi functional products that I own and I wish I had found it sooner. I have been using this as a body oil for the past six months and I have never had such a good tan as I do now - I’m sure this oil has helped. My skin feels super nourished and no scaliness in sight! After some research on this product I found it contains omega 3, 6 and 9 oils. I’ve used it on my hair overnight as a treatment, I smother it over my face for half an hour as a hydrating mask and I use it in the bath with an essential oil. Never again will I be without this oil. Warning! When using in the bath or shower please remember to rinse the bath out afterwards - otherwise you could seriously injure a member of your family like I did! ^

o summer is coming to an end and now the countdown begins (to how many sleeps ‘til Santa of course…)

As the nights draw in and the days get shorter, we start remembering our summer holidays, the fun we had in the sun, splashing around in the pool with our families. It seems like a lifetime ago already! How many of us are lucky enough to get away in the winter? Closer to home, the Canary Islands are always popular along with Cyprus for winter breaks due to the weather. However,

Sarah Hounsell is your very own Personal Travel Consultant with years of experience. Working on your behalf, she can find, plan & tailor make the most perfect holiday for you.

you should also consider long haul (think Caribbean, Thailand and further afield) as these destinations come into their summer season during our winter period and hold their temperatures well. Their white sandy beaches and turquoise seas, as well as a huge range of watersports for the more daring amongst us, make for a fantastic escape from the cold UK winter. Maybe you don’t want sun, sand and sea and are looking for romantic city break somewhere like Reykjavik, where on a clear night you can see the Northern lights if you are really lucky. Or what about Lapland and going to visit Santa and his elves? Take the kids to see the big fella and bake cookies with Mrs. Claus or enjoy a reindeer safari or husky ride? These trips can be for just one day or two to three nights. New York is always popular in the winter months, especially in the run up to Christmas. There is plenty to see and do in the Big Apple, from a helicopter ride over Manhattan and the Statue of Liberty to sitting in Central Park with a hot drink watching the world go by. There’s something for everybody. And when you’ve done with that, hit Bloomingdales or Macy’s to buy those perfect Christmas gifts. Want that Christmas magic but a little closer to home? Disneyland Paris becomes ever more popular each year leading up to Christmas. If Christmas wasn’t a magical enough time of year already, then throw in Mickey and Minnie, fake snow and cheery songs and you have a recipe for some fabulous times and memories that will last forever. Even Scrooge would find it hard not to smile!

QueenBeetravel Finally, cruising is another firm favourite in the winter months and these days you can choose to sail from the UK or fly out to join the cruise ship elsewhere. A lot of the new ships are now taking on the all-inclusive concept (including tips and gratuities) which is proving very popular. The only spending money you need is for day trips when you go ashore. CREATE PROFESSIONAL LOOKING VIDEOS ON YOUR PHONE

M

By Ellen Jackson, www.ellenjackson.co.uk

ost phones can now film in HD and even 4K, so why not use your phone to get some great quality video footage?

around that you can use to attach your phone to a normal tripod. There are travel tripods available that are light weight and pack down small, or alternatively try a phone tripod, which will fit into your pocket. Or if those don’t work then try a selfie stick. The difference it’ll make will surprise you!

THE BASICS When it comes to getting good results, the first thing to think is composition and setting up your shot. Always ensure your phone is horizontal as this will stop those black bars from appearing when it comes to uploading it to the various online platforms.

LET THERE BE SOUND The biggest mistake made in so many videos is with the audio. Get yourself a little mic that will plug into your phone, these will transform your audio quality dramatically, plus most are less than £50! Be as close to the mic as possible and try to find a quiet place to do the filming, mics will pick up even the smallest bit of background noise.

Next, be clear about where you want the main subject to feature in the shot. Aim to focus on the subject within the top third of the frame to minimise any wasted space. Once you have everything set up, have a quick look around to see what else may appear in the shot. You don’t want to have messy shelves in the background, as that won’t send a good message to your audience. SMOOTH & SEAMLESS A big part of video is keeping the camera still. Personally, I wouldn’t go anywhere without a tripod. There are a variety of adapters 48

LIZZIE BENTON OFFERS ADVICE & GUIDANCE ABOUT REAL LIFE ISSUES

Q: MY FRIEND SAYS I’M SPENDING TOO MUCH TIME WITH MY NEW PARTNER, AM I CRAP FRIEND? A: When you meet someone who makes you happy it’s easy to get caught up in spending every waking hour together. While many people call this the ‘honeymoon phase’, it is a significant time in any relationship but it is important that you also take some time apart. You’re not a crap friend, and it’s probably been difficult for your friend to turn around and say this to you, as she probably didn’t want to come across as being jealous. But the truth is, we can get caught up in new love, and without knowing it neglect others in the process. This can hurt our friends and sometimes even our family members, and while we certainly don’t mean to, they can begin to feel as though you’re not there for them. After all, many of our friends have been there for us through some hard times.

Try to book a friend-date with them at least once a month so that you can spend some quality time together. And do your best to not force your new partner onto them. If you do suspect there are elements of the little green monster appearing, do your best to ensure you’re asking about their life rather than just making every conversation about you and your new partner. Maybe there’s something going on in her life that she needs you for, but just doesn’t feel like she can say anything because she doesn’t want to burst your rose-tinted bubble? Balancing new love with existing friendships can often be a tough one, but remember that both relationships are important, and as humans, we need good people around us in order to feel happy and healthy. Whatever you do, try not to sacrifice one relationship for another, not only will this cause conflict later with your partner, but may make you feel isolated. lizaboo.co.uk ^

T

he 6th British Indian Awards presented by CashFinex revealed its winners after a glamourous, black-tie awards ceremony held on the 11th of July 2018 at St Johns Hotel in Birmingham. The event saw Galaxy of Homes Ltd. walk away as the winner in the Best SME Business category. Galaxy of Homes was founded by Madhurita and Vikash Jayaswal with an aim to provide an alternative to traditional property investment and started trading in 2015. The company practises an end-to-end management model for the Buy-to-let (BTL) housing market which helps investors identify, buy, renovate and manage the rental process of a property. The excellent returns on investment achieved via this model has proved popular with investors and has brought BTL to the masses with an average investment of £32k needed per property. Instead of focusing on areas of the country where the property market is overheating, such as London, Galaxy of Homes focuses on those areas which have experienced depressed property values and social deprivation. This has resulted in a much-needed flow of investment from the Southern part of England to the North. The company has bought, refurbished and let more than 300 properties, equating to an investment of nearly £21m in the last two and a half years. They plan to purchase a further 200 houses in Grimsby worth more than

52

QueenBee Autumn 2018

£13.4m by the end of the year. Of late, Galaxy of Homes is overseeing the continuing transformation of the historic Fishermen’s cottages in Grimsby. The scale of their investments in Grimsby have garnered extensive media coverage and support from local politicians and have helped to secure their reputation as an important investor in the area. Mrs Madhurita Jayaswal, co-founder of Galaxy of Homes said of their win at British Indian Awards: “We’re delighted to have received this award. A big thank you to the entire team. Without their hard work, winning this award would not have been possible. We promise to continue our good work and bring more productivity to our field and society as a whole.” ^ > More information on Galaxy of Homes can be found on their website www.galaxyofhomes.co.uk or via e-mail at info@galaxyofhomes.co.uk

& decadence

2018 INTERIORS are all about understated tones with splashes of bright colours, luxurious textures and decadence... • Spa Bathrooms Admittedly, when has anyone not wanted to feel like their bathroom resembles a fancy hotel spa but if Instagram is anything to go by, people are now wanting to create the feeling of total peace and relaxation of a retreat with large jacuzzi baths that you can soak in for hours, all one-colour tiles and earthy tones.

• Velvet According to MADE.com’s designers, this is the year of velvet. Velvet is billed to be the fabric of choice for statement soft furnishing.

• Terrazzo Cool in the ‘70s, uncool in the ‘90s, cool again in 2018. Yes, Terrazzo is back. The colourful floor tiles add an incredible edge to any room. Expect lots of more affordable options to appear on the market over the coming months now the composite stone becomes popular again.

• Earthy Neutrals Sage is stated to be the new neutral, replacing the likes of pure white, beige and stone. The muted green with grey undertones is certainly more bold than others but it's an approachable colour. Paired with woods and a cream colour palette, the green will soften and warm up any space. Other pastels tipped to be hot are soft mustards, jades and olives ^

T

his is the perfect time to be writing about growing your own food! August is drifting on by and brings with it a weekly bounty of fresh produce at the QueenBee allotment, grown from the seeds we’ve been nurturing since the start of the season. It’s time now to appreciate all the work (and all the love) that’s gone into the QueenBee allotment – and to me, there’s no better feeling than producing meals for the family grown by my own two muddy hands. The picture on the left is the harvest we brought back in the second week of August. The tomatoes are our favourite, the best we’ve ever tasted! So tiny, but bursting with rich, sweet flavour. The best things do come in tiny packages after all! My fingers are purple from picking blackberries from down the lane and since this is the Autumn issue, I’d love to share some foraging tips! Nutritious food is growing all around us – powerhouses of vitamins and minerals in fact! I get particularly excited for this time of year as it means free, fresh nuts are about to drop. Organic hazelnuts are expensive to buy, but are abundant all around us - we love to get under the trees and find our own! Hazelnuts

or ‘cob’ nuts are often grown around residential areas or used as hedgerows. Once you can recognise the leaf, you know where to look for nuts! Here’s a few other things we might add to our basket along the way... Rosemary One of the most valued and versatile medicinal herbs, often overlooked due to being a common and abundant plant. Use as a flavoursome culinary herb in a variety of dishes or use with a little sugar for a delicious and nourishing herbal tea. Dandelion But that’s a weed! Yep, and a highly nutritious plant too! Pluck a few leaves and blossoms from an area away from trodden ground and add to salads, juices or wilt with spinach. Elderberries Often used by wildcrafters and herbalists to make a winter rescue syrup to nourish the body and strengthen the core immune system during the colder months. A natural, child-friendly option to treat coughs, colds, and flu ^ > Follow our instagram page for regular allotment updates @QueenBeePboro

WITCH HAZEL: A MAGICAL PLANT FOR AUTUMN By Scott Lewis, Flowers and Plants Direct Limited

Flowers & Plants Direct sells up to 100 varieties of flowers and shrubs at its 8,000 sqare foot, Hampton based unit, selling direct to the public as well as wholesale to florists. The business is run by Scott Lewis who has 30 years’ experience running multimillion pound horticultural businesses, supplying some of the UK’s biggest supermarket chains. In this issue of QueenBee magazine, Scott tells us about the little known, yet amazing, Witch Hazel plant. 58

QueenBee Autumn 2018

T

he name Witch Hazel conjures up thoughts of Halloween and pointy hats but this plant is not actually named after the broomstick topping, magic wielding sages! In fact the name of this amazing plant derives from the Middle English word wiche, and means pliant or bendable and the twigs of the witch hazel have long been used as divining rods in its native North America. But although Witch Hazel’s name may not be connected to witchcraft, the plant doesn’t lack its own magical powers. Native Americans used extract of Witch Hazel extensively for medicinal purposes. Many people produced Witch Hazel extract by boiling the stems of the shrub and producing a concentrated liquor, which was used to treat swellings, inflammations and tumours.

QueenBeegardens

Early Puritan settlers in New England adopted this remedy from the natives, and it has now became widely used and sold in modern chemists as a remedy for skin problems and minor bleeding. It is under active investigation for treating diabetes, skin cancers, chronic-wound care, and many other disease conditions. And its medical properties are not the only thing that makes the Witch Hazel magical. It is one of only a few plants that blooms in winter – producing spidery flowers in yellow, orange and reds which can survive even the harshest of winters. They also have a spicy and citrus scent. Sprigs cut and placed in your home can perfume a room with an amazing scent and can last up to two weeks.

Witch Hazel can be planted in the Autumn and grows best in full sun to partial shade for best results it needs a minimum of four hours of direct sunlight. It’s colour, scent and healing properties make this deciduous shrub a perfect addition to the Autumn garden and are available at Flowers & Plants Direct in Hampton. TEENAGE ANGST: WHY ARE TEENAGERS SO STRESSED AND DEPRESSED THESE DAYS? By Gary Johannes

I

had an interesting debate with a friend recently who believes it’s all about parenting. I agree that some of our teenagers may be suffering due to poor parenting but in truth this represents only a small minority. So, what are the things that cause stress for young people? Statistics of teenage mental ill health: •1 0% of children aged 5-16 have been diagnosed with a mental health problem •7 5% of young people with a mental health problem are not receiving treatment •7 5% of mental illnesses start before age 18 •5 0% of mental health problems in adult life take onset before the age of 15 Whilst the science world is still weighing up the levels of genetic involvement in mental health, there is evidence to show that the causes of anxiety and depression can be environmental. Our children have such a minefield to get through every day: from SATS, GCSEs and A Levels to smart phone use, social media, reality shows and the constant need to be ‘valued’ according to their image.

60

QueenBee Summer 2018

Then we have teenage biology. Handling these massive biological changes on top of the above and you can see why life can see so hard. I think we can say that it’s not all about quality of parenting. So how can we help? • Point out their successes, praise the little things they do and notice their strengths. • Focus on sleep. Lack of sleep as a teenager is a huge problem and exacerbates many conditions. The teenage brain goes through a process of pruning back old, unwanted, neural networks in order to learn as an adult and this needs sleep! Let them sleep, it’s not their fault, they are not being lazy. • Get physical. Activity that is engaging and fun is a perfect antidote to stress and depression. It’s not about going jogging, just find the right activity for them. • Be sociable. The more positive, social interaction the better, as it produces oxytocin and serotonin (as does exercise), so a club activity is great. • Talk to someone. Create an environment where they can share their thoughts and you can listen! ^

HOW TO GAIN UP TO A THIRD MORE STORAGE SPACE IN YOUR HOME, IN JUST ONE DAY!

S

pace is critical in every home. Think of the number of times you’ve thought “it would be good to keep this, the problem is where?” Well, how about your loft? In the average home it accounts for between a quarter to one-third of the volume. That’s a huge area that can add so many uses and benefits to family life. Perhaps it’s difficult to get into? Not floored for storage or use? Local company Access4lofts solve all these problems with simplicity. They specialise in developing lofts for storage. Safe access to your loft... The majority of properties have an access hatch to the space in the loft. Access4Lofts create space the easy and affordable way. They can supply and install a new loft hatch and a safe, sturdy aluminium loft ladder in your home in just one day! That means that your dark and dismal roof space suddenly becomes a useful storage area for all that family clutter. “My experience enables fitting the ladder and converting the access hatch, in double-quick time the space is accessible

and I leave no mess behind” explains Paul Norgate of Access4Lofts Peterborough. Floored and useful... Another option is to install a loft hatch and ladder and board out a decent sized area of your loft. This gives you somewhere to store the suitcases or keep your Winter/Summer clothes. As soon as you have this additional space you'll wonder how you lived without it for so long. Added property value exceeds fitting cost... With the problems of moving house today, not to mention all the stress of the move, this is a simple solution which adds value to your property. With a safe ladder giving access to your loft everybody can store their goodies away from the living area. And, if you are planning to sell your home, easy access to the loft space could give your home the advantage over other houses your buyer might be looking at. > If you'd like to find out how Paul can transform your loft into a useful storage area then give him a call on 01733 663207 or take a look at www.access4lofts.co.uk/peterborough QueenBee Autumn 2018

HOW TO UTILISE LINKEDIN TO BOOST YOUR PROFESSIONAL PROFILE... By Anna Morrish, Quibble Content • quibblecontent.co.uk

I

f you’re a business professional, LinkedIn is THE tool you should be using. But, how can you make the most out of it?

Start as you mean to go on. Before you get ahead of yourself, ensure your profile is complete in order to reap the greatest rewards possible. Check you’ve updated the following: • Profile & header images • Contact information • Headline • Summary • Employment experience • Education & further qualifications • Personal URL When filling out your profile, be sure to add in keywords that are relevant to you, including your industry and both current and previous roles. Be as descriptive as possible. Once you’ve completed your profile to the best of your ability, it’s time to update your settings. Within the “Settings & Privacy” options, change how people see your profile and network information - You have and will continue to work hard to build up your network, so ultimately you don’t want to share this with anyone and everyone. We also recommend disabling the ability for others to see your connections and turn off the feature “Viewers of this profile also viewed”.

Key to success If you’ve followed the above steps, you’re ready to utilise LinkedIn to boost your professional profile. Consistency is key. When you begin engaging with your connections, adding new ones and start posting and publishing articles, it is vital you start as you mean to go on. Don’t expect instant results. It takes time and perseverance. Here’s the activities to conduct to boost your profile: Daily activities: • Check notifications and respond to any messages/tags • Review and accept relevant connection requests • Write and publish a post/share or like a post/comment on a post • Target 5-10 relevant people and connect with them Weekly activities: • Ask 2-3 relevant connections for a recommendation • Approach 5-10 connections and ask for a introductory/catch up meeting Monthly activities: • Write an article and publish it Do this on a regular basis and you’ll begin to build your network, receive more recommendations, develop your skills and knowledge and even obtain more leads ^ QueenBee Autumn 2018

A sting in the tail by Tracy Hefferon

B

ack in the spring, or rather back in that hideous extended period of winter, I decided I needed to take up a new hobby and meet new people. As a teacher and a writer, I spend most of my days talking to six-year-olds or in front of a laptop talking to nobody at all and living in a complete fantasy world. In short, I needed to get out more. So I decided to become a rower. As you do. I signed up for a four-week Learn To Row course, two sessions a week, two hours a session and turned up on the first day looking a bit lost and feeling slightly apprehensive. I joined a group of around sixteen newbie rowers, all from different walks of life; different ages, different sizes and different sexes. Over the next couple of weeks, we were taught the basics of rowing, pointed in the direction of the boats and basically shoved out

66

QueenBee Autumn 2018

onto the kilometer-long rowing lake to ‘get on with it’. Over the following month, several people dropped out, several people fell in and several of us had accidents. I say ‘several people’. That should have read ‘I’. Not only did I totally miss my step whilst getting into a boat, trapping my leg between boat and pontoon and seriously injuring my leg, I also decided to brave 50mph winds in a single boat only to be swept sideways into the concrete slipway at the end of the lake, where I crashed, broke the rudder, injured my left arm and had to be rescued by three people. Hard-core. But it’s all been jolly good fun. We’ve now moved into the Development Squad and are fully-fledged members of the rowing club. The group has bonded so much we have a WhatsApp group chat and have been out socially together. Rowing (or any group or team sport) is a great way to get out there, improve skills and fitness and make new friends. It might seem a bit daunting at first, rocking up to a club not knowing anyone, but everyone’s in the same boat… quite literally! ^
