I hope you've had an amazing summer ladies. It feels strange to be writing this intro for our autumn issue when I am looking out of my window at a gorgeous August sunny day - there's not a cloud in the sky! We've had a real mix of weather this summer, from scorching temperatures to torrential downpours. But as the season turns, we can look forward to trees ablaze with colour, cosy cardis and (hopefully) pumpkins from our allotment. Welcome to the autumn issue of QueenBee! This issue is bursting with inspirational stories and articles for women, from colourful fashion, autumn makeup trends and using your buttock muscles! Plus, our two new fitness experts, Yaba and Tola tell us about the benefits of HIIT workouts (that's high intensity interval training in case you were wondering!). We've got the low down on the QueenBee allotment plus a multitude of tips, advice and information. So sit back and enjoy... it’s going to be a colourful one!

GRAIN to GLASS

All Saints Brewery is Stamford’s hidden gem, offering tours for ale lovers keen to learn about a process that has changed little over the centuries

T

he fact that there’s a working brewery in the centre of the Lincolnshire town of Stamford is one of this attractive area’s bestkept secrets. All Saints Brewery, and its cobblestone yard, are tucked away in the centre of the town. They don’t shout about it, but if you book a guided tour of the brewery you can see where organic fruit beers are made, then enjoy a glass in a cosy bar. Manager of the adjoining Melbourn Bros Pub, Dan Bourner, leads the tours with infectious enthusiasm. You’ll see the front of the original polished black boiler that overlooks the current modern version across the way. Head up the wooden steps and trace the flow of the fragrant grain as it enters the building to begin its journey through the brewing process. A steam engine dating back to 1910 powers both the mill, which turns the grain into fine ‘grist’, and the mash tub where the grist is combined with boiling water and wheat. The hot liquid is blended with hops in a huge copper vat, sending a delicious fragrance up the chimney. The liquid ferments in

6

QueenBee Autumn 2019

huge polished wooden tanks being transferred by tanker to Samuel Smith’s brewery in Tadcaster, North Yorkshire, where it’s bottled.

Take a tour of the brewery, which has changed little since the 1800s

On your way around the brewery, built in 1825 and re-built following a fire in 1876, you’ll see all sorts of fascinating items from its past. You can step inside the foreman’s offices, laid out exactly as they were in the heyday of the brewery with ledger books and other paraphernalia, including measuring equipment and original bottles. The coopers’ workstation, where the wooden barrels were made, is still exactly as they might have left it at the end of a working day. • Pre-booked tours cost £6.50 per person, call 01780 752186 or visit allsaintsbrewery.co.uk ^

Autumn Equinox by Lexie Wrightson

T

he wheel of the year is making the final turn from the zest and heat of summer into the season of mellow fruitfulness and mists of Autumn. The harvest is almost over and the equinox, or festival of Mabon, is a time to take a few moments to honour the changing seasons and give thanks for the abundance of food provided by earth. Like spring equinox, this is another point of perfect balance on the journey through the Wheel of the Year. Night and day are again of equal length and in perfect equilibrium dark and light, masculine and feminine, inner and outer, in balance. But we are again on the cusp of transition as the light begins to wane and we move into the dark half of the year as the sun weakens, the nights grow longer and the days shorter.

• Pick damsons, sloes and blackberries to eat or make into delicious homemade gins. • Clear out and complete those projects you have been meaning to do all summer. We often think of spring as the time to clear out but now is the perfect time to complete unfinished projects and clear your home of unwanted stuff. Prepare to hibernate! • Plant bulbs which will hide in the earth until early Spring beckons. Make each one a hope, idea or aspiration for spring and wait until their little green noses show above ground - to remind you!

• Celebrate with a feast for friends and family using as much fruit and veg, locally grown or from your garden

Most of all as the nights draw in and days are colder, prepare yourself to hibernate with good books, films and be gentle with yourself, allowing rest after the hectic summer. We naturally want to hunker down as we are drawn back into the dark to complete the wheel of the year ^

• Go for a walk in the woods and notice the changes in the season, collect fallen leaves

D

eciding whether the time has come to move into a residential care home is one of life’s biggest decisions. How do you know which one is right for you? Peterborough Care is a family-run organisation founded by Shammy and David Marjara that has provided residential, nursing and dementia care to older people in Peterborough since 1984. Shammy, a registered nurse, had a real passion for working with older people in hospital and the community so she and her husband David decided to open Broadleigh Nursing Home over thirty years ago. Their two sons Amar and Ajay (pictured below) later joined the business and Peterborough Care has gone from strength to strength. They are the longest established and largest older people care home provider in Peterborough. This is testament to the passion they hold for delivering the highest quality of care for their

10

QueenBee Autumn 2019

residents and the reputation that they have maintained in the community. They operate only in Peterborough to ensure that quality and management of their homes is maintained to the highest standards, whilst guaranteeing excellent relationships and understandings with community services and medical practitioners. The latest addition to their portfolio is the fabulous Thorpe Wood Care Home in Peterborough, which provides residential and dementia care. Opened in 2019, it is a brand new fifty-bed care home located in a quiet area near Thorpe Wood Golf Course and Ferry Meadows Country Park. The home is divided into four households and the approach has been developed to create a safe, familiar atmosphere in each of the households where residents can get to know each other and the staff and not feel lost and confused in such a large home. All rooms are ensuite with many overlooking the golf course. All residents have access to spacious gardens, a cinema room, hair salon and sensory rooms plus there is an on call

QueenBeemag

The facts on dementia make stark reading. • There are 850,000 people with dementia in the UK, with numbers set to rise to over 1 million by 2025. • 225,000 will develop dementia this year, that’s one every three minutes. • 1 in 6 people over the age of 80 have dementia. • 70 per cent of people in care homes have dementia or severe memory problems. • There are over 42,000 people under 65 with dementia in the UK. • More than 25,000 people from black, Asian and minority ethnic groups in the UK are affected.

nurse system in place to address the needs of those with dementia, open viewing and visiting time and personal memory boxes outside each bedroom. Peterborough Care encourages you and your partner/relative to visit them and have a good look around. It is the best way to see if the care home you’re interested in is a ‘good fit’ for you.

You can take as long as you need and ask as many questions as you wish and if you’re not sure, you can go back for a second visit! If you need information about funding your stay, speak with a director who can provide advice on funding options ^ > Please call 01733 562 328 to book your visit or for more information go to www peterboroughcare.com QueenBee Autumn 2019

MICHELLE ABBOTT, OUR REGULAR STYLE CONTRIBUTOR TALKS ABOUT INTRODUCING COLOUR TO YOUR WARDROBE

I

t’s easy to stick to what you know and there is nothing wrong with that, but sometimes it is a really good thing to try something different, to push yourself out of your comfort zone. This applies to all areas of life, but this time, I’m referring specifically to introducing colour into your wardrobe.

How do you wear colour? You might reach for black trousers/skirt to style with a brightly coloured top - or try to ‘tone down’ a zingy dress underneath a black jacket. Think again. I’d personally steer away from blocks of black to accompany colour.

I’m as guilty as anyone of relying on black, navy and neutral when dressing - but over the past few years I have really learnt to embrace colour and experiment with all things rainbow hued.

Try a neutral tone - grey, beige or white, or denim (denim works with everything) or, wear colour with colour - toning or clashing - it’s quite liberating! And once you’ve got over the feeling that everyone is looking at you (if they are it’s because you look fabulous and they are planning their own colour assault), you’ll find it far less scary, you’ll notice the impact on your mood (I never fail to feel happy when I’m wearing red), and hopefully you’ll find the shades which work for you and will embrace a more colourful way of dressing. Most of all, and this sounds obvious, have fun with colour, this is what clothes are supposed to do!

So where to start? First, find a colour that works for you - and try various shades acid yellow might sap the life from your appearance, but a mustard tone may make it glow. I personally love red and bright pink these colours look fabulous clashed together too. It’s just a case of picking something that you naturally gravitate towards, and seeing how it looks, but also how it makes you feel. Ask others for opinions - I often speak to ladies whilst shopping and hand them something colourful (I can’t help myself I’ve never had a bad reaction yet!). They nearly always say they would never have picked it and proceed to the changing room! For the more cautious an easy way to introduce colour is with accessories - look for a bright bag to lift a neutral outfit. A colourful shoe looks amazing styled with camel, white, denim or to pick out a shade from a print dress. Think about a belt or a fabulous pair of tassel earrings to lift your look.

The 4D Laser Facelift by Annalisa Phillips,

A

s a practicing aesthetic therapist I’m lucky enough to spend the majority of my time talking to women, predominantly women over the age of 50. I find my clients to be funny, interesting and with a strong sense of inner self that comes with life experience. I often quiz them about life advice, parenting my children or business development and I feel lucky that I am trusted to look after their aesthetic needs! I also find that they have common concerns when it comes to skin ageing. Skin laxity, dehydration and loss of volume are generally what women are faced with once the body enters peri-menopause when collagen (the springs in the mattress of the skin) production stops. Lack of estrogen leads to a thinning of the skin and often an increase in production of pigment. At the clinic the all-encompassing option that treats clients who present with these concerns is the 4D Laser Facelift. 4D Face Lifting is the process of using two different types of medical grade laser at four different modalities to work on deeper, medical and superficial connective structures of the skin, while simutaneously targeting different skin imperfections. All non-surgical skin rejuvenation is based on heating the skin to promote neocolleganthesis. The reason 4D Laser

Face Lifting is our method of choice at The Beautiful Truth is the accuracy and speed at which we can reach the target temptrature at the target tissue. We can also vary the primary focus of the session to tackle the clients specific concerns. One depth for tightening the jowls, neck and deeper facial lines and another for fine lines and open pores. We then have the added benefit of being able to treat the surface of the skin with a light non ablative laser peel that has minimal downtime and maximum results. The latest technology means gone are the days of two week recovery while your face peels off! Recently Kim Kardashian posted her experience with the 4D Facelift which demonstrates the popularity of the treatment with the Hollywood set and indeed all over the world. However, more importantly for me, my amazing, strong and wise clients in Peterborough have been loving the results over the last three years and that is what really matters. 4D Facelift is available at The Beautiful Truth with clinical director Annalisa for ÂŁ200 per session. Annalisa is a Level 4 laser and light qualified aesthetic therapist with over 10 years experience in advanced skin treatments. Consultations are free of charge. > To book your complimentary noninvasive 4D Laser Facelift consultation call 01733 555540. How to switch up your

with just 3 things!

A

utumn is creeping up on us; with the days looking duller and the latest spell of downpours, you’ve had to choose an umbrella as your go-to accessory and there’s definitely a change in the air.

this year, paired with a very stripped back natural eyeshadow and a layer of lip balm to compliment it (see our summer issue article for a step-by-step of how to achieve the perfect summer skin!) and this makeup look certainly isn’t going anywhere.

But how do you switch up your makeup routine? Here at Kiss & Makeup™️ we love to keep ahead of the trends but also believe that makeup is such a personal preference.

So how do we adapt it for the Autumn? Think of it like your wardrobe - you can still wear your favourite slogan ‘T’ and floaty skirt, but you’ll need to add a cardigan or leather jacket and swap those summer sandals for some closed toes.

If you like something, you should most definitely rock it, whether it ‘suits you’ or not! That said, there are some pointers we can give you to keep you ‘on-trend’ for the autumn season. 2019 so far has seen a big shift in makeup trends. Swapping strong, clean structured brows for a full and fluffy over-grown style. Golden, glowing skin has been the look of 22

QueenBee Autumn 2019

Your makeup is no different! The trends of this year are here to stay, so it’s all about keeping the ‘Golden Glows’ and adding in a few extras. Keep your brows and skin exactly the same. You just simply need to add in these 3 things to achieve the perfect autumn look...

QueenBeemakeup EYESHADOW: Enhance your eye makeup look, for a subtle but sexy autumnal twist. Choose a matte eyeshadow and apply all over the eyelid, gently blurring with circular motions into the socket space.

LIPSTICK Vamp it up with deep red, burgundy and purple toned lipsticks. Dare to go darker with your lippie and trust us, you won’t regret it! Maybelline lipstick Berry Bossy >

TOP TIP: For a natural look try mustard shades or for a heavier look try burgundy/purple shades

< NYX Ultimate Shadow Palette

< MAC lipstick - Dare You

EYELINER Eyeliner was a big focus on the Fall 2019 runway shows, with some strong and bold styles looks leading the way. However, for most of us, it’s hard enough to get a straight line with a liquid eyeliner! Thankfully, the wearable style for the next few months, is smokey liner - phew! Using a Kohl pencil, rub along the lash line. Use a black or dark brown eyeshadow on a cotton bud to smudge along the liner and you will have yourself a sultry liner look, to subtly darken up your eye makeup. TOP TIP: Only apply to the outer area of your eyelid for a softer look or for a stronger look, do the same technique on your bottom lash line too!

TOP TIP: If you’re not used to a dark lipstick, use just a tiny amount with some balm or gloss on top! So that’s it! Mustard or burgundy eyeshadow, smokey eyeliner and a darker lipstick is all you need to get the perfect autumn makeup look! Thanks for reading and we look forward to sharing some more of our secrets with you in the next issue. Please tag us in your selfies! Keep an eye on our Facebook page for tips, advice and motivational videos from this dynamic duo @queenbeemag. Here they tell us about the benefits of HIIT (High Intensity Interval Training)...

S

pending hours and hours on the treadmill is no longer necessary to get those fitness gains. The new recommendation for healthy adults is at least 30 minutes of moderateintensity physical activity five days a week OR 20 minutes of more vigorous activity 3 days a week. Adding a 20 minute HIIT session has also been recommended 1-2 days a week (ACSM, 2011). Why try HIIT? This quick and fun alternative has the added benefit of improving blood pressure, cardiovascular health, reducing the risk of Type 2 Diabetes, reducing abdominal fat and maintaining muscle mass.

20 MIN HIIT WORKOUT TO ACHIEVE YOUR FITNESS GOALS ONE SPACE Firstly decide on your space. This workout is designed to be easy and efficient so use the variety of options you have available to you without overthinking. This can be done at home in your living area, bedroom or kitchen. You can also incorporate outdoor space such as your local park or garden. Or even make the most of your gym membership and use the studio space when it’s free. A SPRINKLE OF EQUIPMENT One of the best parts of this method is that you don’t actually need any equipment. You can get the best of the workout by simply using your body weight. However, if you decide to add some variation to the program you can easily increase the resistance by using dumbbells, ankle weights or resistance bands. If you don’t have any fitness equipment don’t stress about going out and breaking the bank - get creative and use household items to add some weight. Include things such as tinned veg, pots, pans, children’s toys or even old text books! A HANDFUL OF EXERCISES You literally only need about 6 different exercises. Once you’ve mastered them you can progress to variations of these to make things a little bit more challenging (e.g fast walking, squats, lunges, push ups). Start with a 1-minute warmup to get your heart rate pumping (e.g. jogging on the spot or star jumps), followed by your 6 exercises (each lasting 30 seconds with a 30 second rest). Repeat 3 times, then perform a cool down for 1 minute (e.g. walking on the spot, stretching)*

A DASH OF CONSISTENCY Like most things results are not going to happen overnight. So, make sure you start with at least 2 sessions a week. Choose two 20 minute sessions that work well for you to avoid a decline in participation. You can do this in the morning before work, during your children’s nap time, in your lunch break at work or even in the evening when you would otherwise be lounging on the sofa watching Netflix! Whatever you choose make sure you stick to it and you’ll begin to see and feel the benefits in no time! IS THIS FOR ME? A 20-minute workout really is as simple as it sounds. Regardless of age, gender or fitness level, HIIT training is for all people. As long as you have the desire and determination, you’re good to go! Start by modifying the intensity of the workout to a preferable challenging level. > If you want some professional 1-2-1 advice to kickstart your fitness journey, sign up for one of the many personalised programmes with Afful Health & Fitness by visiting www.teamafful.com > Why not attend an upcoming TMacLife Female Fitness Brunch? We address a Fitness topic specific to women in the form of a workshop demonstration. Book your space at www.TMacLife.com/events

One of the best parts of this method is that you don’t actually need any equipment.

*N.B: For specific exercises be sure to contact either Yaba or Tola to learn how to do these exercises as well as this we can ensure you are doing them correctly.

CONSTRUCTION WORKERS

D

o you work in the Construction industry as a builder, sparky, chippy or brickie? Maybe your husband or boyfriend falls into this category? If so, the new law regarding reverse charge VAT will affect you… As of 1 October 2019, a VAT registered business (Contractor) receiving supplies of construction services from another VAT registered business (subcontractor), will have to account for the reverse charge VAT on its own VAT return and will be able to recover that VAT on the same VAT return, subject to the normal VAT recovery rules. The domestic reverse charge will only affect supplies at the standard or reduced rates where payments are required to be reported through the CIS. The reverse charge applies to ALL services & materials under CIS. Exemptions from the Reverse charge include: · T he services are supplied to an end user, such as the property owner, or directly to a main contractor that sells or lets a newly completed building · T he contractor is not VAT registered, or required to be VAT registered · T he contractor is not registered for the CIS · T he subcontractor and contractor are landlord and tenant or vice versa, or · T he supplies are zero-rated.

30

QueenBee Autumn 2019

Contractor: Where the reverse charge applies, the contractor will need to ensure that it does NOT pay over the VAT to the subcontractor irrespective of what the invoice says, as the contractor will still be liable for the VAT. Instead, the VAT will be retained, offset against the contractor’s VAT reclaim and reported in their VAT return. Subcontractor: VAT invoices will need to show more details: · Subcontractor invoices must make it clear that the domestic reverse charge applies and that the customer/ contractor is required to account for the VAT. Example wording to include on the invoice is “Reverse charge: Customer to pay VAT to HMRC S55 VATA applies.” · The VAT rate applicable and the VAT due will need to be shown (but not charged and paid over to HMRC). Any queries can be directed to Polly at LeeP Accountants ^ > Any business owners, sole-traders, contractors or landlords looking for Accountants that “go-the-extra-mile” should get in touch with the team on 01733 699033 or email contact@leepfinancial.co.uk

U

s humans have over 600 muscles in our body and the gluteus maximus is the largest. It is located at the back of the hip and is also known as the buttocks. It is one of three gluteal muscles: meduis, maximus and minimus.

Although this muscle is the largest, when I test this muscle during a Physiotherapy appointment I find it is one of the weakest. Why is this? There are many factors contributing to its loss of activity but the main one is sitting. When we sit, this muscle is switched off and not being used as its main functions are: • Standing up from sitting • Holding yourself up in standing • Climbing stairs Weak gluteal muscles often contribute to: • Back pain • Knee problems • Hip and groin pain • Bursitis of the hip and knee I quite often hear patients say that they do lots of squats - and yes, squats do strengthen the gluteal muscles, but often if your leg muscles are strong they take 36

QueenBee Autumn 2019

over and the glutes become lazy. The first thing I do is to check your squat technique as this can be wrong and I will be able to identify if it uses the gluteal muscle weakness or other imbalances.

There are many exercises to help with gluteal strength but the first thing to do is to wake up this lazy muscle. This can be done in sitting, standing and lying: try to contract your gluteal muscles and hold for 10 seconds and now the tricky part is contract the right buttocks without the left and visa versa. This is harder than you think and feels impossible, but with

practice you can perfect this easily! We are telling your brain to use the gluteal muscle and this can then be activated through day-to-day activities. Pilates is a great way to activate your gluteal muscles without other groups coming in. > Check our my video on how to activate and exercise your gluteal muscles - find it on our Facebook page @ Ultimate Performance Lifestyle Ltd or on our website www.upl.life under 'news'.

Holiday 2020 By Sarah Hounsell

W

ow, where has this year gone? I cannot believe another Summer is almost over, we are heading into Autumn and, dare I say it, Christmas! As I write this people have either been or are going on holiday and so now thoughts turn to next year. The trend for longhaul continues and a hugely popular choice remains Walt Disney World in Florida. With that in mind I thought I would give some ideas and tips. The question I get asked all the time is 'should I book a villa or stay on site?' The answer is 'what do YOU prefer?'

Sarah Hounsell is your very own Personal Travel Consultant with years of experience. Working on your behalf, she can find, plan & tailor make the most perfect holiday for you.

If you stayed on site the benefits are you do not need a car and can rely on the free Disney transportation system - buses, boats and monorail . Literally you can access all of the parks easily without the need for a car or taxi. Time your booking right and you can take advantage of the free dining packages (2 meals, 2 snacks and a drink for free each day). And if you do want to go off site then you can use a taxi or Uber to visit the shopping malls of Orlando. If you want to go further afield then you should probably consider a villa, giving you flexibility to go wherever and whenever you want. If you want to relax and have a pool day then you can. Florida, of course, is not just about Disney and so you may want to head to Universal, Seaworld, Busch Gardens or the Space Centre. Why not take a drive down to the Keys, beautiful white sand and not a pair of Mickey ears in sight! For the sports fans you can catch Orlando Magic basketball,or watch Orlando City football (soccer!). The other most popular place for next year seems to be Turkey. This country is huge and has four main airports for UK flights and four very different locations. If you are looking for 5 star luxury hotels and sandy beaches then you can't go wrong with Lara Beach which has miles of luxury hotels and plenty of shops offering the very best in, shall we say, 'replica' goods! For the thrillseekers, if you fly into Antalya you have many resorts that offer big hotel chains with on site waterparks. Look up the Black Hole ride online and see if it for you. If you are all about sitting on a lovely t beach and going to a nice little taverna then get

yourself on a flight to Dalaman and go to Olu Deniz and the stunning Lagoon that always features on a Turkey brochure . Pop on a Dolmus to take a look at the village resorts of Fetiye or Hisaronu. A Dolmus is a cross between a minibus and a taxi on which you can travel for miles for just a few pennies - true story, I was sat with a chicken next to me once as the farmers also use this for transportation!

If you have any questions at all please do get in touch. If you are concerned about dealing with someone on Facebook please go to my page @Sarah Hounsell at Hays Travel and check out the Feefo reviews and feedback. I have 27 years experience in the industry so please give me a try!

And, still in Turkey, if you are wanting a lively holiday then Kusadasi is your resort, flying into Izmir. Enjoy the night life along with a few bigger hotels and the busy town with the

LIZZIE BENTON OFFERS ADVICE & GUIDANCE ABOUT REAL LIFE ISSUES Q: My manager is constantly belittling me in front of my colleagues. I love what I do, but I’m starting to not enjoy where I work. Should I leave? A: Leaving a job due to bullying or any other colleague issue is an extreme step to take when you love your job so much. ‘Banter’ or commeradie can sometimes get out of hand in company culture, and people can begin to say very personally, hurtful things without truly realising the impact. Unfortunately, not everyone knows how to be mindful of others, especially in the workplace. The first thing to do is to tell your manager about the way you feel. Addressing it directly, although a little nerve-wracking, can give you a better understanding of whether this is meant in jest, or if there is a larger managerial problem at hand. If she dismisses your feelings, then this where you have to go above her head and talk to the people that she has to report to. This is never a comfortable situation to be in, but if you love what you do it’s a

shame to sacrifice the joy of a job due to one person. You may also not be the only one she is doing this too. If you call her out on her behaviour you may find she has done it to others and you’re the one who’s finally saying something. On the other hand, she may be doing this to try and connect with you. In a very strange way, people often try to build a connection with others by making them the centre of their jokes. Your manager may not realise she’s making you feel this way, and will probably feel grateful that you’ve said something. I think there’s a journey that needs to happen before you make the solid decision to leave the company. Besides, if you love what you do, that often means you’re passionate and dedicated to your job. Companies don’t want to see good people leave due to in-house conflict, so ensure to address it ^ lizaboo.co.uk

THE NEW FACE OF DIVORCE

I

f you sadly reach the conclusion that your marriage is irretrievably broken down, you can’t just make a mutual decision to start divorce proceedings. In many jurisdictions in the western world, no fault divorce has been the norm for decades, but not yet in Britain. In this country you still have to apportion blame or wait for a minimum of two years from the day of separation. Even then (on the separation ground) you need the consent of the other spouse, without which you would have to wait five years. No fault divorce was first introduced by the Family Law Act 1996 but was later considered unworkable and repealed. There has been a movement for reform ever since and demands for change mounted after the Tini Owens case last year. Mrs Owens had filed for divorce on the grounds of her husband’s unreasonable behaviour but she failed right up to the Supreme Court to provide sufficient evidence of that behaviour being unreasonable enough and the divorce was thrown out. She has had to wait for the expiry of the full five years. Mrs Owen’s situation was highly unusual and it is very rare for divorce

proceedings to be contested. Nonetheless it is not a good start to ending the marriage when you have to raise allegations of unpalatable behaviour which often sets the tone for the rest of the case. The new law is likely to require that just one of the spouses gives notice that the marriage has broken down and the separation period is reduced to nine months. The Government was committed to reforming divorce law in the next parliamentary session, which started in May. However, it seems that the turmoil over Brexit has derailed this timetable. But the push for reform is now very strong and the lobbying of Resolution, the national family lawyers’ association, is relentless. So we very much hope that within the next 12 months at most, ending a marriage will no longer be the often fraught process that it currently is.

The divorce reform will not affect the law concerning matrimonial finances however. This will continue to be a challenging process full of legal pitfalls. Unless yours is the most basic of cases, it is always wise to seek advice from a family law specialist before agreeing the terms of a financial settlement. For those who apply for divorce online, a word of warning in this context: you must make sure that as Petitioner, you tick the boxes for making a financial application for you and the children, if they are under 18. If you fail to do this, you may be disqualified in the future from applying for a share of the marital assets ^ Belinda Smith is the owner and principal of Belinda Smith and’t Co., Family Law solicitors based ” at Asset House, 27-28 Thorpe Wood, Peterborough, PE3 6SR

O

ur impact on the world, as a growing human population, is undeniable, and action must be taken sooner, because there may not be a later.

Globally we are using more resources than the planet can renew each year. The scale and impact of climate change is unprecedented, and it’s the biggest challenge we have ever faced. We are already seeing the effects of rising temperatures with food insecurity and extreme weather conditions. That’s why the environmental charity PECT is launching a ‘Green Networking’ event, bringing together likeminded organisations and professionals throughout the region to discuss sustainability. Don’t miss your chance to hear why climate change matters, what can be done about it, and to look at making a difference for Peterborough and the planet.

This event coincides with the exhibition ‘Gaia’, an artwork by Luke Jerram which will be displayed at Peterborough Cathedral from 19th August until 15th September 2019. This 7m diameter sphere features detailed NASA imagery of the earth’s surface, and is a fantastic opportunity to reflect on the fragile beauty of the earth that we need to protect and care for. For further information, see www.peterborough-cathedral.org.uk/gaia The ‘Green Networking’ event has been made possible thanks to support from Peterborough Cathedral and sponsorship by Roythornes Solicitors. “We’re delighted to be involved in this important event,” explains Mark Dodds from Roythornes Solicitors. “It will take place in a building that was built by thousands of people taking a long-term view. The situation we are in is in many ways similar, but the scale is much larger and the stakes even higher. It’s imperative that organisations such as ourselves take responsibility for our actions, and we’re looking forward to meeting like-minded businesses for an interesting and informative discussion.”

The ‘Green Networking’ event will be held on Thursday 12th September 2019, 6.30pm to 8.30pm in The New Building at Peterborough Cathedral.

The Green Networking is a free event. Access to the New Building is through the main entrance at Peterborough Cathedral. Drinks and vegetarian and vegan canapes will be available.

Dr Toby Willison, Executive Director of Operations at the Environment Agency, will be the keynote speaker at this event with his talk: ‘What does the future look like with a changing climate?’

Booking is essential, please reserve your place online at www.eventbrite.co.uk/e/ green-networking-tickets or search for ‘Green Networking Peterborough’ online.

“We know that great environmental work is already taking place across the city by individuals and organisations,” explains PECT’s Interim CEO Stuart Dawks. “But we took the view that more can be achieved when people work together. The idea of this event is to form those networks, start those conversations and really build momentum as quickly as we can for making a difference.”

t’s hard to think of Autumn settling in as I write this now, on a gloriously hot Summer’s day in August, with the doors open, brightness and birdsong filling the house. Each week for the past few months we’ve been able to take home enough fruit and vegetables to sustain three generations of family (with plenty to spare). To me, that’s success worth shouting about! Also, as the weather has provided us with plenty of rainy periods this summer, our plants have been happy with a little extra watering. Combined with the weedsuppressing methods we’ve started using, the plot has required minimal work, which makes the experience feel all the more successful. We’ve also managed to make this eco-project even greener by significantly reducing the content of our recycling bins, shredding up every bit of paper and card waste for our compost and using boxes to layer with the mulch. Since most of our food comes from the plot, our household waste bin doesn’t see much action either, so this project really is reducing our footprint significantly. All the money we’ve saved on food bills has paid for us to have a family holiday too - the perks seem endless! It’s been an empowering season in terms

of learning new skills and developing our experience as vegetable gardeners, that’s for sure! This feeling makes me super excited to utilise more of our new knowledge in our plans next year – but I try not to get too ahead of myself. For now, we’re pulling up the produce and replacing it with seeds that will grow happily throughout Autumn and Winter, such as beets, onions, spinach, lettuce, peas and kale. It really is liberating to be feeding our families on this scale, from our humble plot, entirely from seeds we’ve nurtured to fruition. This has certainly become a huge part of our way of life and makes us all the more determined to continue doing everything we can to become as self-sustaining and friendly to our Earth as possible, working with it as nature intended ^ > Follow us on Instagram for the latest updates @QueenBeePboro and @earth_crafts QueenBee Autumn 2019

LOVES GARDENING By Kerry Cooper

H

ello Queenbee Readers! What a strange few months it’s been since the last edition for our gardens, from blazing heat to non stop rain. Needless to say it’s wreaked havoc with weeds/grass and certain blooms/bulbs have struggled to reach their potential. I’ve had a very busy last few months, not just keeping gardens in order but I visited the Gardeners World exhibition in Birmingham which was just fabulous! Not only did I meet Adam Frost I was fortunate to be in an audience with Monty! What a treat of a day, I can thoroughly recommend it to anyone next year. I also supported two wonderful events - the annual Kids County Show at The Peterborough Showground where 5,000 school children visited, I designed an outdoor garden den and the children absolutely loved it. I also volunteered at Facet Adult Education Centre in March which is an incredible learning facility for adults where we made hanging baskets to raise much needed funds for the charity, it was great fun! 52

QueenBee Autumn 2019

A few tips for the upcoming months going into my favourite Season Autumn. Keep your borders weeded as weeds will battle with your pretties to steal their nutrients, and turn the soil over to loosen roots, top weeding isn’t enough, established weeds will rule! If you are going away on your holidays move your pots into the shade and stand in a container of water to aid hydration. Dead head any fading blooms to encourage new buds, and give any straggly plants like geranium a good chop, any self seeding plants try to hard prune before the seeds start flying around, or you might want to develop a more wild/meadow effect next year in that case allow extra time in the borders. The fun thing about gardening is as long as you keep on top of what you are growing and looking after your plants your garden will love you back. See you in the Winter when all the fun begins to prepare for Spring bulbs and putting your garden to bed ^ > Follow me on Facebook or Instagram @kerry loves gardening

H O W TO BOOST ENGAGEMENT ON YOUR BLOG By Anna Morrish, Quibble Content • quibblecontent.co.uk

S

o, you’ve started a blog – That’s fantastic news! Having the motivation to start a blog and post regular content takes time and dedication. It’s something many people say they want to do, but never do. But the question is, now you’ve set your blog up and you’re busy posting away, how do you increase engagement and reach your audience? Engagement can be anything from the amount of times a blog post is read, how long it is read for, how many of your posts people have read, number of comments, how many social followers you have… The list goes on. Your content needs to not only command attention but also encourage readers to interact with it. Here’s a few ways you can boost engagement across the board… Identify your audience Firstly, you need to understand who you’re talking to and why. Identify your niche and why people should read your content. Once you know this, you can focus your efforts on creating relevant content to those who’re interested in the same things as you, who have the same values,

54

QueenBee Autumn 2019

same challenges and need the advice and support you want to share. Create a captivating title Be sure to keep titles short and to the point, while being descriptive enough to explain what readers can gain from your content. The last thing you want to do is mislead anyone or create something that’s simply “click-bait”. Make it eye catching Break up content with images, videos and graphics that will capture readers attention and make your content easily shareable. Distribute your content Once you’re written a blog post, tell people about it. Share links to it on social media and use relevant hashtags to reach an even wider audience. Also, if you’ve mentioned other bloggers or brands, tell them and they might your content with their audience too. Respond to comments If you encourage engagement, it’s only polite to respond to any comments you receive, what’s more, it’ll encourage others to join the conversation ^

THE LATEST TECHNIQUES IN NON-SURGICAL FACE LIFT

T

he demand for cosmetic procedures is stronger than ever with patients looking for the latest innovations to make them look and feel better about themselves. There is certainly a demand for cosmetic procedures with predictable results, little discomfort and minimal down time and risks of adverse reactions such as allergies. More and more people are choosing non-surgical cosmetic treatments as they are more in control of the final outcome and can return quickly to their busy lives. Non-surgical face lift is gaining an incredible popularity using a combination of thread lifting, threat rejuvenation, botox and dermal fillers. There have been differing opinions on whether or not threat lifting actually works.Yes, it does... provided it is done using the correct technique and by a skilled practitioner using only highest quality of resorbable barbed threads. Natural polydiaoxanone threads have been used for over 30 years as a resorbable suture materials in different fields of medicine. With time, studies revealed mechanically induced skin tension and a stimulation of new cell and collagen formation. Not only do the threads lift sagging skin and improve the appearance of jowls and nasolabial lines but they also improve the skin quality and texture. As a

result, the threads have high safety profile with complete absorption within 6 months to a year, having synthesized new collagen in the facial skin. The procedure of placing the threads causes minimal discomfort and downtime with slight swelling and bruising lasting about a week. The effects are evident straight away and for up to 2 years depending on age, lifestyle and skin condition. Cost starts from ÂŁ1000 depending on individual requirements ^ > To book a consultation with Dr. Victoria Sprinz call Bupa Herlington Dental Practice on 01733 234566 Email: PeterboroughHerlington@ bupadentalcare.co.uk

COPING WITH

STRESS

By Gary Johannes

L

ast year in the UK 11.7 million working days were lost to stress-related issues. Time off might be due to headaches, Irritable Bowel Syndrome or problems with high blood pressure. Not only that, but long-term stress impacts our immune system, so we are much more likely to be off work with colds and flu. The impact of stress on our emotional and intellectual health can be just as significant. We know that stress leads to poor concentration, motivation and confidence. Chemicals release into our bodies to help us deal with stress - this makes it difficult for us to think clearly, we find problem-solving difficult, memory is impaired and we are making poor decisions at work.

And then the impact of work-related stress effects home and family lives. Stress at work leads to a miserable home. We can snap at our family, we often withdraw from social activities and we don’t have the time or energy to do things we love doing - the things that evenings and weekends are all about. So, all in all, stress is a problem – especially in the workplace. Yes, life can be stressful, but the good news is it doesn’t mean that it has to make us stressed. Shakespeare had the right idea when he said “There is nothing either good or bad, but thinking makes it so.” Stress is not the result of our work, boss, family, or our finances. Or the result of our journey to work, health challenges or in fact

any other circumstances we are in. Stress is the result of the thoughts we have in relation to those things. So how can we change the way we feel stress? A subtle, yet significant change in how we are thinking about it gets us on the right track. Let’s say we’re given a tight deadline at work; our instant reaction is “I’m never going to be able to do this.” Our brain classifies it as a threat. Because we are sure we can’t do it our brain doesn’t try to find a solution and just releases stress hormones. Now, same deadline, different reaction. This time we say “wow, this is tough, how am I going to be able to do this?” A subtle difference but an important one for our brain - a problem to solve, a bit of ‘challenge stress’ which we are energised by to start taking action, rather than feeling stuck and panicked. So, the good news is we can take back some control from stress caused by work. Can we change the deadlines? No. Can we change our workload? No. Can we change how we choose to think about it? Yes. Can we choose how we react to it? Yes ^ > For the Full article and many more visit www.mentalhealthintheworkplace.co.uk/ work-making-you-stressed

A sting in the tail by Tracy Hefferon

I

used to be very fit and active, running three times a week, swimming daily, aerobics classes. You name it I did it. Then I started noticing bits of me hurt each time I exercised which led to me doing not very much at all apart from walking.

times worse? Plus it will be full of strong, fit, lithe women who will all stand there pointing and laughing at me? The next day, after being cajoled by my amazing thirteen-year-old daughter who promised to be my gym buddy, we joined a bloody gym. The instructor who carried out my induction was brilliant and listened to all my joint problem woes then gave me a long list of equipment and exercises I should use to get maximum benefit with minimum pain, not only in the gym but in the pool too. I felt slightly more positive and concluded this gym malarkey might actually work.

Fast forward a couple of It was only when I decided "It was only when months and I can feel a huge to take up running again in difference in myself.
