Welcome to the QueenBee festive issue 2019
I
n the words of The Rolling Stones... Please allow me to introduce myself; I’m Tracey Skelton and I have the absolute pleasure in joining the QueenBee family. The last couple of months have seen myself and Kathryn in a whirl of intoxicating creativity and energising hustle and bustle, rebranding, reworking and welcoming new contributors to our exciting new look magazine. This Festive issue is bubbling with seasonal inspiration such as gifts ideas from local influencers and bloggers Helen and Darren, hair from Kai Wan along with a Triple Tipple feature from wine expert Alex Way, QueenBee cocktails and Kusum covering the sophisticated and grown up non alcoholic options. We are very excited to have Gemma McGregor join us who specialises in everything ladylike and not forgetting the original A Team who are still here to inform, inspire and pass their invaluable knowledge. So sit back, grab a cuppa and let us lead you gently into the Christmas madness.

We are delighted to welcome and introduce you to the amazing Gemma McGregor BSc (Hons) PGCert MCSP. Gemma is a woman's health specialist, physiotherapist and educator.

emma runs a busy private woman’s health clinic, is a mother of three very small children, and an advocate for informing and educating all things intimate about woman's health. Over the forthcoming QueenBee issues, Gemma will guide us through subjects that maybe we’re a little afraid to ask about. So, here’s a bit more from Gemma and what she does…
appear to be common, they are never normal. There is a solution.
Everyone knows how to tone up their muscles – we join a gym or go to a yoga/pilates class (even if we are guilty of not doing it enough). We also all know what to do if we have injuries that are affecting us – we go to see a specialist.
Here are some of the reasons many women seek my support, if you can relate to any of these please don’t suffer in silence, there is treatment available.
But what about that huge muscle called your Pelvic floor? What do we do if that is not working as it should do? After all, it’s pretty important – it helps control our bladder and bowel functions, offers structural support around the pelvis, provides vital support in pregnancy and helps us to enjoy sex amongst other things. For pelvic floor, or any intimate woman’s health concerns, I would strongly suggest you see a woman’s health specialist physiotherapist. Please remember, even though your symptoms Festive issue 2019
Pelvic Girdle Pain (PGP) in Pregnancy PGP can really take all the enjoyment out of pregnancy. Pain and inflammation in the pelvis causes difficulties, walking, standing on one leg, turning in bed or MOST importantly getting that good night sleep you really need. Leakage There are two main reasons the bladder may leak. In either of these cases it is NEVER normal, yet common and likely something you have lived with for some time. The caused is when the pelvic floor and urinary sphincters (the trap doors) are not able to stop wee when
HEALTH
pressure inside the tummy increases. The other type of urine leakage is known as ‘Urgency’ or ‘Urge incontinence. Prolapse Heaviness, lumps bumps and bulges, difficulty getting a tampon to stay in are all common symptoms of vaginal prolapse. We see most ladies with these symptoms after a pregnancy and around the menopause as this is usually when our bodies oestrogen supplies are lower. Painful Sex Sex should never be painful and the key to getting the route of the problem is finding a clinician you trust to talk openly and honestly about your symptoms and how it is impacting you and your relationships. We understand it is a highly sensitive and personal issue but it is so important you do not suffer these symptoms in silence. Pelvic Floor Weakness As part of a supervised pelvic floor exercise programme a women’s health physio can give you an internal examination which involves no equipment other than a finger to be able to grade your pelvic floor strength from 1 to 5. You can therefore be taught how to do exercises personalised to you and begin to improve your pelvic strength.
The Mummy MOT This one hour postnatal check will give you the opportunity to discuss any physical or emotional worries. This will involve - diastasis assessment (tummy separation), pelvic floor muscle assessment, postural screen, and screening for any bladder, bowel or sexual dysfunction. Painful tears or scars are assessed and concerns about C-section scars can be assessed and treated. Breast Cancer Women’s health physios are also specialists in musculoskeletal assessment following breast cancer surgery from lumpectomy’s to reconstruction. Treating common complications like cording, exercise programmes or fatigue, or post radiotherapy tightness. Chemotherapy itself can cause some significant pelvic floor symptoms and we can look at all of these as part of your assessment

LIFE BLOG
A Martyr to the cause By Louisa Parr
Peterborough lady Louisa Parr is one of our original members of the QueenBee family, giving us an insight into her musings and life experiences.
C
hristmas... a joyful time for family get togethers, mistletoe and mulled wine... or arguments, headaches and bah humbug? As the festive season fast approaches, you’ll find me somewhere between panic and excitement during this busy time. Making endless lists that I never look at again, rushing from here to there, on a mission from God to make everything perfect. Always spending far too much money. Wait! What? There was a budget?
I once even had a notion to make my own mince pies. I bought the ready rolled pastry and popped it in the freezer... and came across it again the following Easter! 12
QueenBee magazine
It’s quite a mammoth task to take Christmas preparations on single handily, but for some reason I usually decline any offers of help (unless it’s peeling the brussel sprouts, I hate that job). I heroically plough through the million and one things to do; wrapping gifts, writing cards, decorating the tree. I once even had a notion to make my own mince pies. I bought the ready rolled pastry and popped it in the freezer... and came across it again the following Easter. Well, my intentions were good. I’ve gallantly tackled the “big shop” 24 hours before the special day arrives, single handedly; it's absolute carnage and not for the faint hearted, I wouldn’t recommend it to anyone. These days I usually persuade some unsuspecting brave soul to come

with me. But for all my organising at lastminute.com I realise that I’ve usually forgotten something, like the Paxo and, bugger, we’ve no bloody cream for the trifle that no-one is actually going to eat1 So I send a reluctant volunteer up to the local Tesco Metro to get the supplies needed, just before it closes. They come back with the most expensive, extra special stuffing mix (that nobody would ordinarily choose to purchase on a normal day) and a carton of crème fraîche, declaring that it was all they had left. Christmas Eve is here, it’s finally arrived. I look under the tree, there are gifts for the people I love. I check the turkey that’s cooking slowly in the oven, food to share with my family. There is plenty of wine in the rack that usually remains redundant for most of the year, and there’s every conceivable variety of cheese known to mankind in the fridge. Elvis is singing his Christmas hits quietly in the background and I am absolutely knackered... but now with a large baileys on ice in hand, I’m looking forward to the arrival of my family and much merriment and self indulgence. I feel truly blessed. However you may choose to spend your Christmas, Cheers to you all and Happy holidays!

HAIR
Party hair season By Kai Wan
W
ith the Party season approaching, no doubt you’ll be reaching in the wardrobe for your favourite little black number or hitting the shops for something sparkly and new! Whatever you’re doing, remember it’s all in the details; from your toes to your crown is what creates that jaw dropping look - and it's your crowning glory that we’re discussing here. This sociable season leaves us wanting to look and feel our best, so let's talk about hair health. Coming in from the cold outside and into the heat can cause havoc with your locks. The cold wind can dry your hair of moisture, making it feel brittle and then going into warmth can cause static frizz.
Whatever you’re doing, remember it’s all in the details; from your toes to your crown is what creates that jaw dropping look!
I recommend treating your hair with an intensive hair mask. Choose an evening when you can sit back and relax. Wash as normal and towel dry. Generously apply the hair mask, then with your hair wrapped in a towel, snuggle down with a hot drink while the mask does its work. After the recommended time given, rinse and style. If you have any specific hair concerns, book into your salon and let the professionals give you a more prescriptive treatment. Now that you have condition and shine, we can think about styling. Have you tried heated rollers? Yes I said it…heated rollers! Blow-dry your hair with plenty of mousse then roll up in the heated rollers until and leave until cool. Remove, then brush out for a full, bouncy and glamorous look. Why not try a bit of colour? There are plenty of temporary colour options for you to try... go on, be daring! Don't forget to book into your salon early for that specialist Christmas ‘do’

ust a short hop from Peterborough, every year historic Bury St Edmunds sparkles into life with the launch of its much-loved Christmas fayre. ith the cosy festive season upon us, there is no better time to gift our bodies with physical activity... and what better way to do that than in a social environment! Let us introduce you to one of the top 10 trending fitness topics of 2019, Small Group Personal Training.
What is it? You may have heard of the other popular option of Personal Training. Group training is an offshoot of this which holds the benefit of getting the direct coaching and encouragement from a qualified Fitness Professional, within a fun group environment. That’s right, you don’t have to go through it alone this season. Group training is described by the ACSM as any workout with more than 5 participants. These can be your friends, family, colleagues or even total strangers.
Group Training - in it together Tola Macaulay BSc MSTA MSMA Clinical Director TMacLife Ltd. www.tmaclife.com t. 0330 043 2326 Welcome to our health and fitness experts, Yaba and Tola. Exercising with a smaller group of people can be a massive encouragement for people who sometimes have trouble motivating themselves to turn up. Festive issue 2019
FITNESS
When: Anytime, anyplace!
Fab 5 benefits of small group training: 1. Motivation. Put simply, it keeps you accountable and consistent. Exercising with a smaller group of people (on average five to 10) can be a massive encouragement for people who sometimes have trouble motivating themselves to turn up. 2. Variety of exercises. Being introduced to different types of exercises keeps the workouts interesting and reduces the risk of boredom. Been curious about trying something new? Your trainer can show you how to use that kettlebell or resistance band properly and effectively. 3. Much cheaper than Personal Training. The cost per hour is significantly lower than hiring a 1-1 session. The more of you there are, the cheaper it gets. 4. More personalised time with your trainer. This is where group training differs to a studio class. The trainer will still guide and direct your technique and adjust the plan to meet your needs. In fact, you will be able to still have that much needed quality time to work on your own goals. 5. Setting and reaching goals. This is the best part! You won't be wasting your time or money. You'll be given a plan to follow and a heck of a lot of support to do it in a specific time frame.
Where: Before you ask, no you don’t need to join a gym. There are several different ways in which you can access small group training, so the traditional class set-up is not the only option. Group Training can be done almost anywhere: Online, in the comfort of your home, garden, local events, a local park or community hall. Is it for me? Group training is for any woman of any age, wanting to improve their health, wellbeing and meet like minded people. Why not give it a try and share your experience on the QueenBee Facebook group?
We’re big advocators of women together so we have TMacLife’s Monthly Female Fitness Brunch, bringing women together to introduce a health topic. TRIPLE TIPPLE | WINE
Alex busts those wine myths... Letting a bottle breathe Heard of the old adage of taking the cork out and then resting a bottle on the side? Well… it doesn’t make any difference, well maybe to the top inch or so of the wine. Instead, pour a small amount (10ml) down the sink (or into a glass) and allow the air bubbles to get to the bottom of the bottle. Then the air that’s got to the bottom of the bottle will aerate and ‘breathe’ all of the wine in the bottle! Easy! Screw tops or corks? Who’s turned their nose up at a screw top bottle? All of us right? Well, it's in a screw top for a reason! A natural cork is slightly porous and allows a small amount of air into the bottle to further enhance the wine whilst it wings its way to your table from the vineyard. A screw top doesn’t allow any air penetration, so that just means that the wine producer has decided that they’re happy with the product when it's bottled. So let's trust them as they probably know what they are doing eh? Leftover fizz Lastly, if any of you are lucky enough to end the day with half a bottle of fizz leftover (yeah, right I hear you all say - but it can happen!) then don’t just stick any old teaspoon in the bottle, make sure it's silver. If granny didn’t leave you any silver in her personal effects, then either drink the rest of the bottle or stick a proper champagne stopper on your boxing day shopping list! Have a great festive season, with much love from all of the Wine Bar family!

TRIPLE TIPPLE | QUEENBEE COCKTAILS
The alchemy of Cocktails always lends a little pizazz to the festive period. Here in the QueenBee office, with help from Alex Way of Twelve All Saints Bar in Stamford, we’ve been mixing, pouring, researching (and maybe a little tasting) to bring you three of the best… hick… Merry Christmas!
The QueenBees Knees This is definitely a real royal pleaser. Pour or strain into a cocktail glass. Twist the orange peel over the cocktail and drop it in... chin chin!
The Red Stag and Dirty Teddi
The Pink (to make whoever you identify with) Wink

Kusum is a Peterborough mum with a love for mother nature, balancing between mind, body, spirit and social conciousness. A real foodie, here Kusum shares her favourite festive drink recipes with us.
These festive aromatic drinks are a great twist to enjoy over the Christmas season. With a hum of Indian spicing and fruity sour tones, they will leave you feeling comforted with the warmth of Christmas chai, upbeat with a crisp citrusy festive slush puppy and ’our body is a temple’ detox pitcher - to align and nurture oneself after those heavy holiday meals. Cranberry, Grapefruit & a hint of Cardamom slush puppy An allrounder family crowd pleaser to bring to the table. The kids will love the texture and the fresh zest of grapefruit and cardamom spicing makes it a great pallet cleanser too. Serves 2. • 2 cups of water • 1 cup sugar (I prefer maple if serving to kids) • 1 punnet of cranberries • 4 cardamoms • 3 large pink grapefruits squeezed (cantaloupe works great here too) To make: Heat up all the ingredients except the grapefruit/ cantaloupe (if using instead) in a pan and let it simmer till it starts to thicken. Once it turns to a syrup like consistency turn the heat off. Sieve the cardamom out and add the grapefruit juice and any flesh (blended fresh cantaloupe to be added here if using). Place into the freezer. Blend into a slush and serve. Add sugar coated cranberries / frozen cranberries and a squeeze of lime.

Christmas Chai There is something so warming about spiced tea and this recipe is inspired by the hectic streets of Mumbai and the homely Christmassy cinnamon scents which make an appearance on almost everything sweet at Christmas. I’ve grounded up some cinnamon bark and home dried ginger peel for a real seasonal kick to make this jar of goodness. For the Chai mix • 6 tbsp cinnamon (grind, bark or ready grounded) • 6 tbsp ginger (grind, dried, fresh ginger or ready grounded) • 6 tbsp cardamom pods • 6 tbsp fennel seeds • 2 whole cloves • 1 whole star anise • 2 tsp grounded nutmeg • 3 drops clementine oil/orange blossom (optional) • 3 pinches of allspice • 10 tbsp coconut sugar *optional (with sugar makes a moorish instant chai latte mix) Combine all the dry ingredients, blend and store in a jar. To make: Serves 1. Heat half a cup of water with 1 heaped tbsp of chai mix and simmer for 3-4 mins. Add half a cup of your preferred milk (I love oat) and simmer for 3-4 mins. Lastly add the optional clementine/orange oil.
Indian winter detox drink This festive detox drink is a great pick me up post Christmas day and will help to filter out toxins from the body. Pomegranates are in season winter fruit in India, they are rich in antioxidants, high in vitamin C and aides digestion! This drink will help to perk your immune system. Serves 4. • 5 cups of water • 2 large pomegranates • Half a bunch of fresh mint • 1 lemon • 2 limes • A squeeze of agave or honey *optional In a jug add the water, release the juices of both pomegranates and slightly bruise the mint to release the oils. Squeeze in the citrus and add agave/honey! QueenBee magazine

New Years Eve
Peterborough - Family & Friend Time. Cost: whatever you want it to be! Being from Peterborough, for me there is nothing better than having a gathering and hosting your own New Year’s Eve party full of glitz and glamour, making memories with your family and friends. There's no need to travel far and it’s a chance for everyone to let their hair down and sing Auld Lang Syne after a snog with a stranger or loved one at midnight.
Cambridge - Neon Moon, Moonlight Speakeasy. Cost: £55. A party not to be missed! Neon Moon club has events all around the year but if you want to party like its 1920 in the 2020s then this is your shot. You are expected to dress in the classic 1920s style - think gangsters, flappers and all things 1920s. This will definitely give you your 1920s fix.
Stamford - The William Cecil, New Years Eve Classic Package. 31st December – 2nd January. Cost: £500. Our most expensive New Year’s night, this is a top-of-the-range evening filled with a three-course meal and 2-night stay at one of Stamford’s prestigious hotels. HEALTH
Don't add “stress” to your Christmas list this year! By Nazleen Reed, Ultimate Performance Lifestyle Ltd
C
hristmas is a joyful time of year but can also be stressful! Therefore we need to ensure we enjoy Christmas and not make ourselves ill. Stress and emotion is one of the common causes for lower back pain and certainly is not something you want to add to your Christmas list! Naz from Ultimate Performance Lifestyle has these 5 Top Tips to help you stay fit and healthy with a pain free back for the festive holiday: Exercise – go for a 30 minute walk, cycle, fitness class. This is great help to lower stress and anxiety by releasing endorphins and improves sleep and self-image. Connect with a friend – this gives us a good support network where we can talk about our troubles. Activities with friends help us to relax. Me time – in the UK we work the longest hours in Europe and have little time for ourselves. NHS guidelines recommend 2 nights a week; this could be a relaxed class (Pilates/Yoga), walk, catch up with friends or a massage.
Back exercises – stretches and strength exercises for your back daily will help your back stay strong and flexible. We like to say “10 minutes a day keeps a bad back away”. Make a list – plan your weeks with a to-do list but concentrate and prioritise your tasks. Leave the least important tasks to last and accept your in-tray will always be full. For your FREE 5 essential back exercises email: contact@upl.life

SUSTAINABILITY
CREATING A
Sustainable Christmas The festive season is traditionally seen as a time of excess and indulgence. Why not use this time of year to assess your environmental impact and make a few changes to leave a legacy for future generations? So, what can you do to make a difference for people and the planet? Laura Fanthorpe of PECT (Peterborough Environment City Trust) gives us some tips towards a more sustainable Christmas...

SUSTAINABILITY
Shop ethically
Put your pound into organisations that have an emphasis on ethical and eco credentials. You can opt for local and independent suppliers, or even buy secondhand from charity shops. Plus remember to take your own reusable shopping bags with you when you do your Christmas shopping!
Use environmentally friendly wrapping paper
Choose wrapping paper made using fibers such as hemp, or paper using recycled content. Avoid glossy foil or metallic wrapping paper as this is difficult to recycle. Foil gift wrap is also harder to reuse, since it wrinkles and creases easily when the gift is being unwrapped.
Waste less
Most of the extra waste we create during the festive period can be reduced and recycled. Buy only what you need and choose to buy items with minimal packaging. Freeze leftovers and give unwanted gifts to colleagues, friends and charity shops.
Change your diet
Did you know that food makes up around a fifth of our carbon
Get involved
New year is often a time in which to reflect and make alterations for a more positive, happy and healthy future. If you wish for improvement in your local neighbourhood, then get involved! Sign up for PECT’s e-news at www.pect.org.uk.
footprint? By making small changes to your shopping and eating habits, you could have a big impact on the planet. Pledge online at www.coolfood.net to make positive food choices and help your household reduce its carbon emissions.
Decorate a tree for the birds
Place seed bells, suet, pine cones with peanut butter and seed trays on trees in your garden, preferably a tree in the open where cats can be seen easily by the birds. To attract a wide variety of birds, use varied seed types such as black oil sunflower seed, wild bird mixed seed and nyjer seed bells. This is a great activity for kids and offers an important food source for birds during the winter.
Give your time
Why not donate towards or help plant a tree in your city for a long-lasting and memorable present? PECT has planted more than 115,000 trees across Peterborough, but still needs your help to plant more! Volunteer tree planting days are a great opportunity to meet like-minded people, get outdoors and make a difference to your local surroundings You can also call 01733 568408, email info@pect.org.uk or find PECT on social media #TeamPECT Your business could also join the green accreditation scheme, Investors in the Environment (www.iie.uk.com), to ensure it is measurably reducing its impact.

PLANTS
H
ello QueenBee readers! ‘Tis almost the season to be jolly and I love sourcing new gardeninspired ideas to wow family and friends at Christmas time.
Kerry Cooper, gardener and lover of all things plantbased, talks here about the best plants to incorporate into your home over Christmas.
This year I think a big hit will be sensory trees. Whilst traditional trees will always have their place and are very beautiful, there’s plenty of room for new ideas! How about this ‘Rosemary Tree’ table decoration? What a lovely gift to give to your guests. Boasting a lush, sensory smell to delight noses, it can also be used in cooking afterwards.
Make from a larger section of Rosemary trimmed into shape and presented in a pot with bright ribbons. Why not make your own natural eco-friendly tinsel using garden string with little paper or card stars to string around it? For extra bling, add tiny batteryoperated fairy lights hiding the battery casing in the pot. What a talking point around the table! If you are feeling flirty pop some mistletoe on top and kiss the person next to you!
A plantiful Christmas By Kerry Cooper
Many people associate Christmas with a beautiful red poinsettia adorning their home. Keep in mind that they are quite sensitive and readily drop their leaves if they become too warm indoors, too cold or they feel wet, or if exposed to draughts. So try to keep it away from a warm radiator, window sill and don't over water it, and it should last through the Christmas period Wishing you all a wonderful healthy happy festive time and see you next year > Kerry Loves Gardening • Tel 07514754960 • FB @Kerry Loves Gardening 44

Exclusive events, priceless memories Meet Helen Rome - founder and company director of Elite Events & Consultancy Ltd. Helen juggles two businesses, is detail driven, focussed and passionate about making the events she plans a huge success. Here she tells us about herself, her business and what motivates her.
Q: Tell us about your business Helen Elite is a one stop shop for all event planning and project management needs. We specialise in everything event related - all the necessary planning and event organising whilst equally excelling in all business event consultancy. We're passionate about providing our clients with the very best in professional events and consultancy services.
Q: What first made you decide to set up your business?
I have a unique ability to take someone's dream and vision and make it reality... 46
QueenBee magazine
Festive issue 2019
Whilst working as a director for a company in Peterborough, I also volunteered for a local charity for 12 years. This saw me organizing their annual dinner for 430 people, which I can tell you is no easy task. After a few years of this I thought, I'm not too shabby at this! After a lot of praying and considering, Elite was born.
WOMEN IN BUSINESS
Event and wedding planning is something I always wanted to do, so when praying I asked God for an opportunity, then a few months later I received a call from a company asking me to project manage a particular piece of work, then an event. I was also involved in co-producing a music video for a classical artist where the film was aired at Cannes Film Festival, won 11 awards and was nominated for a Grammy in L.A. We had arrived and the rest as they say is history.
Q: Why do you think your business is such a success? I have a unique ability to take someone's dream and vision and make it reality... I know my stuff! I have bespoke tailor-made packages for which no job is too small or too big, it's with this attitude we really shine. The launch of our new service the "On the Day Planner" allows clients to be involved leading up to the day, but then we are able to take over and run the day, albeit a wedding or business seminar. This is when you can do what our strapline says "Turn up and Look Fabulous".
Q: What or who has been your biggest influence? My family and friends are amazing and of course I have my faith, but I would have to say my sister. In those moments of "self-doubt" she has always been my number one fan, encouraging me, standing with me, and when needed being brutally honest with me. She has, like others, faced some tough times and is a survivor and amazingly strong. I always believe I "could" conquer the world but when I have spoken to her I "know" I can. Little Miracles Bollywood Ball April 2019
Q: What's been your biggest challenge? Self promotion without a doubt! People say shout it from the rooftops – I am not on the rooftop yet but I am getting there and my amazing Social Media lady, Hazel, from Creative Content Company is helping me to do just that. I was a Social Media dinosaur!
Q: What's the most rewarding aspect of your business? Being successful is all well and good, but for me seeing a happy client and knowing I made a difference. Making someone's dreams come true is the best feeling ever.
Q: What do you wish you'd known before you set up your business? How to write an effective Marketing Plan. I had faith it would all be ok but I also had to make some things happen and I struggled in that area. Natalie at LMC is helping a lot with that and she is amazing.
Q: What's the one piece of advice you'd give to someone who wants to set up in business? Make sure you're doing something you believe in and passionate about. When difficult times come, and they will, your passion, drive and faith in yourself is what keeps you standing at the end of the day.
Q: What do you like to do to relax and switch off? Watch NCIS, Law & Order SVU, pray, read and visit friends. I am a secret Strictly fan, although I can't dance to save my life!
Q: What are your future plans? By this time next year, hopefully I will have expanded into events such as seminars, conferences and exhibitions. It would also be amazing to have an even greater wedding clientele > Call Helen on 07863 178679 or email helen@eliteecl.com Visit www.eliteecl.com QueenBee magazine

FINANCE & BUSINESS
Finance and Business: it’s all very taxing Meet Polly, our PwC qualified chartered accountant. She gives sound business and financial guidance along with advice on how to best run your business – it’s a “financial arm around you when you need it”.
C
urrently we are thinking of ways to spend our hard-earned cash before the big day, and there will naturally be less money around to pay bills. The good news is, there are things that you can put into place to ease this pinch over the course of the next few months. The 18/19 Tax year runs from 6 th April 2018 – 5 th April 2019 and the deadline for the submission of your tax return and payment of any taxes owed is 31 st January 2020. Maximise your allowable expenses from your business The more allowable expenses you can subtract from your income means the lower your tax bill is going to be. Here are some costs many business owners overlook: 1. Home office costs – two options a) claim back a proportion of your home office costs to include mortgage interest or rent, utilities, council tax etc or b) claim simplified expenses - a flat monthly rate from HMRC. 2. Travel – two options a) claim back business-related car or van costs, including vehicle insurance, fuel, hire charges, repairs, servicing and breakdown cover or you can use ‘simplified vehicle expenses’ of a flat rate again. 3. Staff costs – if you employ staff, you can spend up to £150 per employee* on a Christmas party which is fully tax deductible! (*Sole traders don’t count as employees.)

QueenBee magazine
Festive issue 2019
Paying your taxes and delaying / spreading your payments If your tax bill is more than £1,000, then HMRC will insist that you pay 50% of next year’s tax in January 2020 as well with the remaining 50% in July 2020. An option to reduce this payment on account is to apply to HMRC with a reasonable explanation. HMRC also have a payment plan option, which they don’t like to broadcast, to spread your payments over 3, 6, 9 or even 12 months. You will incur interest at 3.25%, however, but it makes more financial sense to owe the tax man than to borrow from a bank to pay your taxes! For example, a tax liability of £3,000 would only cost you £8 a month in interest from HMRC. If you want to find out more about any of the above, or you are starting up in business and want some good sound guidance, call LeeP Accountants > Any queries can be directed to Polly at LeeP Accountants on 01733 699033 or email contact@leepfinancial.co.uk
HMRC also have a payment plan option, which they don’t like to broadcast, to spread your payments.

HOLIDAYS
S Meet Sarah Hounsell - your very own Personal Travel Consultant. Sarah can find, plan and tailor make your most perfect holiday.
So, summer is over and we start looking towards Christmas (even though my husband says it’s months away yet!). If you are thinking of a short break before the big man arrives, Christmas markets in Europe are always very popular, none more so than Prague or Bruges. If you fancy fitting this in before Christmas arrives, there are some amazing prices to be had with departures from local airports. Mulled wine, hot chocolate, an array of tasty foods and of course, some last minute presents, tantalisingly await you! Go on, get in touch and treat yourself to a few days away. Short flights to most market destinations mean these trips continue to be hugely popular.
Sunshine or staycation? By Sarah Hounsell
If you don’t fancy going abroad, all is not lost here in the UK, even as the weather turns colder. I can recommend a number of lodge
locations with a hot tub - it could be just what you need to unwind for a long weekend. With some as close as the Norfolk coast, you can be ‘getting away from it all’ in just over an hour. These lodges are beautiful and perfect for a romantic weekend away or perhaps a girls pampering break. From as little as £85pp (based on four sharing) it is a small price to pay for a bit of self indulgence! Of course, the New Year is the traditional time to start looking at your 2020 summer holiday although that ‘hunt’ seems to begin earlier and earlier each year and is already underway with some companies. Have you given it any thought yet? Either way, please get in touch to chat through any ideas you have or ask me for suggestions I may have to give you that dream summer holiday next year. I love booking early as it gives me something to look forward to (and it helps to spread the cost too!) > For the latest amazing holiday deals follow Sarah on facebook @Sarah Hounsell at Hays Travel. "Being an active person, and enjoying such activities as dancing and horse riding made a rib injury literally life changing. Welcome to LisaMarie Butler from Breathe In Pilates, a qualified instructor of Classical Pilates. Over the next few issues Lisa-Marie will be teaching us about focus, posture and strength.
The pain from that day to my upper back and neck was constant, and started to make me afraid of my own body and the constant pain. Finally,13yrs later, I knew I had to make changes and gave pilates a go. Slowly but surely, my strength grew, my pain dissipated and my Pilates journey began."
Keep an eye out in QueenBee magazine over the next few issues as Lisa-Marie will be teaching us how to gain skills such as: Focus: learning to concentrate, stay in the moment and keep our brains still. Posture: releasing tensions of everyday life after days sat at a desk, computer or driving. Strength: through exercise and repetition gain even muscle development > To book in for a class or 1-to-1 session with Lisa-Marie call on 07941 537 540 or visit www.breatheinpilates.co.uk.

CANINES
A dog friendly Christmas! By Shelley Heading
Shelley Heading, owner of the Doghouse Academy and dog trainer of 23 years, helps us see the festive period through your dog's perspective.
W
hilst we're busy getting wrapped up in the festive fun, we may forget to think about the effect Christmas can have on our canine companions From your dog's perspective, this is a time of the year when lots of unusual and exciting things are brought into your home, making it a very tempting time for them to get up to all sorts of mischief. Interesting foods, unusual plants and trees, flashing decorations and Christmas presents will all be of great interest to your dog! First you put a huge, great tree in the house and expect him not to investigate it, let alone pee up it! Then you add lots of shiny baubles, tinsel and lights. Then there's the oodles of super tasty treats lying around, along with visitors coming and going, interrupting the usual quiet routine of your dog’s day.
You have oodles of super tasty treats lying around, along with visitors coming and going, interrupting the usual quiet routine of your dog’s day.
Dogs like routine. Lack of routine and change can cause your dog to become unhappy. Your dog can become shutdown or super-excited depending on his personality. If your dog’s behaviour or personality changes during the holiday it is your responsibility to help them cope. Here are some ways to help them:
Stick to his diet: Don’t be tempted to feed him lots of human food titbits. Buy or make suitable healthy treats, but don't overdo it! Maintain your physical contact/ play: Your dog gains a lot of comfort and reassurance from you. If you cuddle your dog and they like it, continue to make time to do this. It release oxytocin, a great feel good chemical for both of you. If you play with your dog, make time to do this as it forms part of their routine and routine is good. Try and add some extra walks: Walks are a great way to help your dog cope with all the holiday changes. Sniffing combined with physical exercise will help your dog relax. Rules: Allow your dog to choose if he interacts with visitors or takes himself off to his bed. His bed or safe place is just that - no one bothers him there! If he is asleep, children and visitors must leave him be > For more help and info visit www.thedoghouseacademy.com
Daily Routine: Maintain their routine as much as possible, keep their walk and feed times the same. Ensure they have a quiet, safe place to sleep. QueenBee magazine

ADVICE
Ask Boo Lizzie Benton, founder and owner or Liberty Mind, is a passionate advocate of personal development. Here she offers advice and guidance about real life issues.
Q: I’m currently torn between how I should spend my time at Christmas. I’m in a new relationship, and part of me thinks I should try to spend time with my partner’s family, but I really want to spend time with my family. Help! Christmas has a tendency to make us feel like there’s lots of unnecessary pressure. From the thought of having to give gifts for the sake of gifting, to forcing ourselves to events that make us miserable simply because it’s the season of ‘good cheer’. Ultimately, Christmas can often start making us feel like Scrooge.
Rather keep adhering to all of society's pressures, and those around you, think about what would really make YOU happy.
People pleasing becomes a given during December, and I’ve seen many people stress and panic their way through the month because they’re trying to fit everyone in and be everywhere. Rather keep adhering to all of society's pressures, and those around you, think about what would really make YOU happy. If right now doesn’t feel like the right time to spend with your new partner’s family, then explain this to him. After all, ‘forced fun’ is never going to make anyone
happy. You’re not going to be there in spirit, which means his family won’t get the best version of you. It’s amazing how one day can make us all have a heightened sense of emotion. But try to attempt to take the pressure out of it. Maybe dedicate another day during the season to his family, and organise something that would make you feel comfortable. Alternatively, start discussing ways you can start creating your own Christmas traditions. Is there a future where you could create a Christmas that has the best bits of what you both enjoy? We can all often feel the brunt of judgement when our Christmas doesn’t fit the ‘norm’, but what’s normal? Remember that Christmas as a season should be a time for spending your time with those who you cherish the most. And that includes the whole month rather than just the day. And lastly, don’t be so hard on yourself for wanting to do something your way. We all work incredibly hard for our Christmas break, and we’re allowed to enjoy it in a way that makes us happy > Send me your dilemma: Email: lizziebenton@live.co.uk or visit my website www.lizaboo.co.uk and ‘Ask Boo’ QueenBee magazine

BEAUTY
The Obagi Blue Peel Radiance By Kathryn Grace
L
ooking for a facial that provides an instant radiance to your skin? Orchard Mews Clinic on Thorpe Road, Peterborough have now added the Obagi Blue Peel Radiance to their treatment list. The word 'peel' is such a scary word, but don't be put off! This is a non-invasive, gentle chemical facial peel which is essentially a deep exfoliation, designed to remove an excessive build up of dead skin cells which can make the skin look dull. This treatment promises 'new' healthier skin, a more youthful appearance and can help tackle problems such as acne, sun damage and hyper-pigmentation. It promises firmer, smoother, brighter-looking skin after just one treatment with no down time (ideal for your lunch break or before a special night out). This all sounded good to me, so I went along to see how this peel could rejuvenate my tired skin. My face was cleansed of all make-up and the therapist applied a protective barrier of gel to the most sensitive parts of my face, then the first layer of salicylic acid was sponged on. It stung a little bit, which passed quickly and wasn't painful. A second layer of the salicylic solution was then applied and left on my skin for 10 minutes. The whole treatment, including the initial consultation was all over in 30 mins and the instant results were promising - dewy, plump skin that radiated a 'spent all weekend at the spa' glow. How I wished I'd planned a night out for that evening! After the initial radiance of day one, I noticed tiny dry patches on my skin which I was told was to be expected. These didn't last long and about a week later I noticed my skin began to feel really soft, smooth and radiant and I felt confident to go make-up free. What a result!
