DOUBLE CLEANSING! Double cleansing means your products work faster and more effectively. These days, so many foundations and make-up are designed to last and cling to the skin. So before you can get to the skin to clean it, you need to get rid of whatever is on top of it. It’s a bit like getting rid of the mud caked on a pair of leather boots before you can clean the leather!

WHAT’S NOW AND HOW TO DO IT: LIP OILS For the ultimate glossy lip, try a lip oil, rather than a traditional gloss. The newest formulas are super lightweight - nothing like the gloopy products of the past. Clarins, Lancome and Elizabeth Arden have all introduced some fab ones this year. All of which have the hydrating benefits of an oil with the pigment of a gloss.
THREE OF THE BEST LIPPYS FOR WINTER
Matte Mac lipstick in Velvet Teddy Matte Mac lipstick is one of the best lipsticks you can wear on the beach which keeps your lips hydrated and protected from the sun.
Nyx Butter gloss Possibly one of the nicest gloss formulas in the budget world at the moment. This melts onto the lips providing colour, hydration and a glossy shine, perfect to wear on the beach.
Giorgio Armani Ecstasy Lacquer Lip Gloss in Red Chrome This formula has a high concentration of watersoluble pigments to create a stain-like effect, which makes it flawless when you’re on the beach or decide to go in to the water.

OLYMPIC BADMINTON MEDAL WINNER GAIL EMMS MBE INSPIRES THE CITY’S WOMEN
A
t a packed event with almost 100 talented and energetic women (and one very brave man), champion badminton player Gail Emms MBE gave an inspiring talk to the Peterborough Women’s Development Community (PWDC) at the Allia Future Business Centre. Gail achieved international success at the very top of the game. She has been No. 1 in the world at mixed doubles, All England Champion and Olympic silver medallist. She won gold with her partner, Nathan Robertson, in the World Championships and Commonwealth Games. Jennifer Cramb who organised Gail’s visit and is a founder member of PWDC said: “Gail gave a fantastic and inspiring talk – sharing her secrets to success – including racing sheep uphill in Derbyshire mud and snow (sheep run faster than you’d think!), and how, after winning silver, she pushed herself to 100% of her ability in training to go for gold. Her audience were completely wowed and impressed.” The youngest member of the audience was founder member Debbie Hiller’s granddaughter, Rosie. Rosie is about to take her GCSEs and found herself sitting next to Gail. Debbie said “Gail took the time to speak to Rosie and encouraged her to work hard to achieve enough GCSEs to get into college. Gail gave Rosie so much encouragement and Rosie hasn’t stopped talking about it since!”
About PWDC PWDC was born from a conversation last summer between a group of women keen to create something stimulating and beneficial for professional women in Peterborough. The purpose of the Community is to provide opportunities for the City’s working women to gain confidence, inspiration, and ideas to make the most of themselves. Meetings are free, and the next event is on 6 July 2017 at the Allia Future Business Centre. For more information please contact: Michelle Craig: michelle.craig@allia.org.uk ^

Host your own
garden party
W
ith the weather warming up and trees bursting into blossom, gardeners across the area are being invited to show off their outdoor space while raising cash for charity. The team at Sue Ryder Thorpe Hall Hospice in Longthorpe, Peterborough are asking keen gardeners to organise a Garden Party and donate money raised to the hospice – or team up with neighbours and friends to plan a whole Open Garden event. As a thank you, every organiser will stand a chance of winning a barbecue meat pack worth £20 donated by Van Hage Garden Centre. Thorpe Hall community fundraiser Cheyenne Graves said: “Garden Parties are a lovely way to show off all the hard work you’ve put into your garden – and let’s face it friends and neighbours love being nosy and pinching ideas so you’re guaranteed a good turn out for your event! Even better, how about rounding up a few neighbours to get involved too and stage an Open Garden event in your village or
neighbourhood. Charge people for entry, serve tea and cake and perhaps hold a raffle too and watch the money pour in.” A number of garden centres across the region are helping out, handing out ‘invitations to organise a garden party’ to their customers. Each month a prize draw will be held and everyone organising an event that month will be in with the chance of winning the barbecue pack. Cheyenne said: “We’re delighted to have the support of local garden centres where we hope garden party organisers will be stocking up their beds and planters in preparation for their event.” > To find out more about organising a garden event in aid of Thorpe Hall Hospice please call 01733 225999 or email thorpe.fundraising@sueryder.org ^

PLEXR速 - the incredible alternative to eye surgery BEFORE
AFTER
Dr Beverley Brabbins of Newborough Cosmetic Skin Clinic in Peterborough, is proud to introduce PLEXR速, the award winning alternative procedure to eye surgery. One of the key signs of ageing is eyebags or loose and sagging skin on the eyelids. PLEXR速 - a non surgical eyelift procedure can effectively remove the loose or sagging skin without anaesthetic, surgery or scarring. It offers an effective alternative to the surgical procedures, Blepharoplasty (baggy eyelid correction). As well as tightening sagging skin under eyes, which as a result reduces the appearance of wrinkles, PLEXR速 is a relatively quick procedure for eyebag removal. and in comparrison to surgery, is cost effective and affordable.

The Gender Pay Gap: Take Matters into Your Own Hands
R
unning your own business in no piece of cake, neither is raising a family. Hind Adeagbo aged 38, a mother of six, also known for having online business ‘Healing with Hind’, gives advice and helps mothers and entrepreneurs manage their home, careers, and life all at the same time. The gender pay gap in the UK, currently at 18.1%, is having a direct impact on women’s ability to put money aside and invest in their future. Hind said: “After experiencing a devastating crash to my own health after my last child, I got advice from an integrative nutritionist and functional diagnostic nutrition practitioner and transformed my own

diet and lifestyle growing a successful transformational coaching business”. In a recent report, it is mentioned that women are more likely to be paid less and not receive bonuses as well as progress to the highest positions in the organisation they are working in. Women like Hind have tough commitments with juggling both home and work together, this is the reason most of these factors combine and receive much lower pensions. According to Wilson, “a research was found that 87.9% of women said that they have been paid less because of their gender.” The law says that people who work equally through job evaluation must be paid the same, this is a principle that UNISON defend using negotiation, litigation and direct action. Top tips that may help women who are planning to work from home can include: • Establishing the work space, so trying to set up an office-type work environment to help set boundaries for both yourself and your family. • Setting up a routine is very crucial while working from home because you have more flexibility in taking breaks or if there is an emergency. Adeagbo is passionate about helping mothers build optimal health, financial freedom, and happy homes so they can succeed in all areas of their lives. >
She has educated and supported hundreds of women in their childbearing years, helping them achieve their personal goals related to health, birth, mothering, health and business. One of the obstacles Hind faced was having a miscarriage after a nervous breakdown, she was depressed and neglected herself and her health. But that was not going to put her down and made herself get back on track with her health and opened this amazing online business. She mentions: “Being successful women, we should be resourceful and look at every opportunity we have in front of us and take all of the skills and knowledge we have and use it to make money on the side.” “Being a self-employed woman, I have more control over my work schedule, hours and location than wage and salaryemployed women. Yes, I have to schedule my work, if I know I have a livestream, I have to make dinner and do all the chores before going live.” Don’t worry if you are experiencing problems with either career development, personal struggles, wanting to return to work, managing your family home and work together or even health neglect. Take Hind as an example and follow her top tips to help you with everything you need in being a super mum and entrepreneur at the same time! ^ QueenBee Summer 2017

WOMEN IN
BUSINESS
This issue, QueenBee talks to Jo Rofail Bevilacqua who runs The Unique Mumpreneur.
WHAT MADE YOU DECIDE TO SET UP THE UNIQUE MUMPRENEUR? I set up my first business whilst on maternity leave with my first daughter as I did not want to return to my job as a nursery nurse. I wanted the freedom to be able to see my child grow up without anyone dictating to me when I would work and when I could have time off. Three years later I opened Serenity Loves as I wanted something of my own and knew that if done properly, it could be a huge success which it was. One thing I learnt whilst being a mum and a woman in business was how isolating it could be, so I made a conscious effort to surround myself with other positive women in business. This led me to creating an online and inperson community for mums in business, The Unique Mumpreneur. QB: WHAT WAS THE MOST DIFFICULT ASPECT OF GETTING UP AND RUNNING? Ignoring other people’s fears and worries. QB: WHO OR WHAT HAS BEEN THE BIGGEST INFLUENCE INTO HELPING MAKE A SUCCESS? My children, my employees and my clients. QB: WHAT’S THE BEST PIECE OF ADVICE YOU CAN GIVE TO WOMEN SETTING UP A BUSINESS IN PETERBOROUGH TODAY? Be passionate about what you do. People buy from people and if you are passionate about what you do, people will buy into you and your business and will want to be a part of it. If you are just in business to make money people will see straight through you and be turned off!
Work out who your client avatar is as soon as possible. These are the people that are most likely to buy from you and your business. Knowing who they are, their interests and their behaviours, will help you tailor your marketing to ensure that you get results quicker and with a better return on investment. WHAT’S THE ONE THING YOU WISHED YOU HAD KNOWN BEFORE YOU STARTED YOUR BUSINESS? That there is an abundance of support available. When I first set up my business I thought I had to do it all myself. I ploughed through each day and learnt everything as I did it. I was not aware of all the training courses, support networks and mentors out there that could help me move my business forward . I made many mistakes as I was trying to do everything all of the time and wasn’t experienced in certain areas of business, such as HR, accountancy and legal matters. I wasted too much time and energy trying work on my weaknesses instead of concentrating on my strengths. If I had support from the beginning I know that they would of told me this, saving me problems and probably a lot of tears and tantrums. WHY HAS YOUR BUSINESS BEEN SO SUCCESSFUL? I believe my businesses have been successful as we always put the client’s needs and wants at the forefront of everything that we do. All three businesses concentrate on making the lives of our clients easier, be it by bringing the relevant flooring samples to peoples home so they do not have to trawl around the shops, to having a creche at the salon so parents do not have to sort alternative childcare whilst they have their hair and/or beauty treatments done. The Unique Mumpreneur focuses on offering support and training both in person and online, therefore allowing people to develop their business when suitable to them. SISTERS ARE DOING IT FOR THEMSLEVES! By Lorraine Clark
What it looks like to be a working mum is changing drastically. Increasingly, women have more opportunities than ever to support their families from home. There are many opportunities out there now and some great brands to get involved with. NETWORK MARKETING; also, known as direct sales or multi-level marketing. For some reason, while women are making leaps and bounds in the business world, this sector maintains a stigma among us. We all know hundreds of people who are currently working it or have tried it in the past. So, why are we so skeptical? Why is there a shadow cast over each Facebook invite or Instagram post? Why do we continually doubt those who claim to have success in this industry? Going forward we are going to feature on these opportunities for women and hear about the success stories from home, so whether it be Forever Living, Younique etc., we will be covering the successes and how it can work for you! ^ LOOKING FOR CHANGE? TIRED OF JUGGLING WORK & FAMILY LIFE? Would you like to work from home, working your own hours but still have a generous income and a successful career? Start your own professional home based business in the health and wellness sector - we are looking for honest and hard-working individuals who are looking to earn part time £300-£ 500 or full time £3000+

THE MUM DIARIES By Jaymee Heaton
T
he one thing I love most about the Summer is having no school run; being able to spend time with my boys without having to worry too much about bed times, having dinner at certain times and generally feeling restricted. The one thing I don’t like, however, is having to keep an eye on money. With three children that get bored easily it is vital I can find things for them to do. In Peterborough, we are very lucky to have plenty of free activities!
Bretton Water Park, Peterborough
Ferry Meadows - my ultimate favourite place. The only charge is for parking and you can spend hours exploring Bluebell Woods. With three parks, there is plenty to keep little ones occupied too. Peterborough Museum – entry is free (although there is sometimes an extra charge for some activities). You can learn so much just by exploring the exhibits. I absolutely love the underwater exhibit! Bretton Water Park – hidden in the middle of Bretton is a fab waterpark! Be sure to take some shelter, as there is none, and plenty of drinks! Maybe see you there this summer! ^

Spice girl
L
ocal business woman, TV chef and mum, Parveen Ashraf, has just published her first cook book. The book, which is dedicated to her late mother, is full of popular, traditional Indian dishes that Parveen grew up with and just happen to be some of our favourites; dishes like onion bhajis, Chicken Masala and Tarka Daal plus a simple recipe for sweet, fluffy Peshwari Naans. Parveen took part in the Peterborough Come Dine With Me in 2008, she has been catering and teaching Indian cookery for a decade now and is pleasantly surprised at the amount of support she has received from everyone here in the city of Peterborough. Parveen is passionate about her style of cooking and believes that anyone can learn to cook authentic, delicious Indian food using her recipes. Easy, stepby-step and made even simpler with her little spice bags and curry kits, her recipes are suitable for all cooks, even novices. Parveen designed the spice bags for her son who went to university and needed a taste of home. “People love Indian food
but there is a real fear factor about cooking it, what spices go with what. So, I have taken the fear way and made it easy for people to enjoy cooking healthier, tasty Indian food. All my spices are freshly ground and packed by me. Also, spices like cumin, coriander and turmeric have additional health benefits. When I was recovering from a tumour, my mum used to give me turmeric milk, which heals from the inside – it tastes OK too!” says Parveen. If you love Indian food and always wanted to learn how to cook it, then this is the perfect book for you. It features over 60 recipes, including sections on vegetarian dishes, dips, salads and breads. The food pictures are beautiful and were taken by local photographer, Dana from Aldanah Photography. Queen Bee Magazine wishes Parveen well and we look forward see how her journey progresses. Wardrobe wizardry with
P
eople often think of personal styling as elitist and unaffordable - a luxury even. After all, women have been getting dressed for years as standard so why would they ask someone for help?
return is high on both your time and your wallet in the long run.
Unfortunately, many women struggle with this simple, daily task and dread opening their wardrobes or going shopping. What used to be passed down through the generations is perhaps a fading tradition. My mother worked and did not have the time to show me the ropes when it came to personal grooming and style. I bumbled along into my early thirties and I know other women share my experience.
Sometimes it’s knowing what colours suit them best, or dressing their post-pregnancy body but mostly it’s about having clarity about their style signature? Defining exactly how they want to express themselves with their clothes. We call it their Style Personality. Every person has one, men and women alike, and we should all have a clear understanding of what this is.
So now, as a personal stylist, I can encourage them. We are by nature, wonderfully intuitive and skillful creatures but we can’t be good at everything. Some of us want to maximise what we are already doing. Inject some inspiration into their style and bring simplicity to an overcrowded closet. There are many advantages to hiring a stylist. It’s an investment but the 32

Helping women to look and feel good is my passion. So what are their wardrobe struggles?
Is your style more romantic - soft, flowy materials with a gently hippy vibe or is it more natural with simple fabrics, minimal fuss and maximum comfort. Classic-style women prefer clean, simple lines and stay away from fashion trends, while the creative-style personality dresses to be noticed with flair and edge being their theme. I love working with professional women who want to infuse more of their style personality into the boardroom. This is such a fulfilling quest as corporate uniforms can stifle so much of our individuality and can actually hamper our performance. In a recent study, 100 women were interviewed with ages ranging from 21 to 64 years. The researchers found that 96% of
QueenBeestyle these women believed that what they wear affects how confident they feel A new hair cut that you love or a gorgeous new dress can super-size your energy for the day. Confidence is so attractive (more than aesthetic beauty, in my book) so while we all can’t look like Claudia Schiffer, we can all possess the beauty of knowing who we are, that we have worth and are not afraid to let that show! > How can people find you? ur very own Lorraine had her wardrobe overhauled by Alex and here she tells us about the experience. “I was really looking forward QueenBee to my session with Alex as I love VERDICT fashion and dres up, however I have far too many clothes and I am not very good at getting rid of items. I simply buy what I like, without thinking about whether the colour suits me or not, so I knew this experience was going to be quite harsh! Alex went through each wardrobe, each item and it was a simple case of yes, no or maybe. She explained why certain items didn’t work, which I have to say, I agreed with.
Alex Agboke of Stylepe g
Alex is a master at what she does and in the long run, this would save you a lot of time and money and makes getting dressed so much simpler. I did have a good clear out… not everything though, as some pieces were just too hard to let go! But I will stop buying on a whim and think more about each purchase. Alex’s after sales service is fantastic, since we met she has been sending me lots of images of clothing that she thinks would suit me and has given a whole fresh outlook” ^ QueenBee Summer 2017

THIRTEEN REASONS WHY Jay Asher (Amazon, £7.99) With the recent release of the series on Netflix, it’s only right that you read the book to go with it. As with most films and books, the series has an entirely different take on the book, so it won’t spoil it for you. The story is about a young teenage girl who committed suicide, but recorded thirteen tapes targeted towards the people who hurt her during school before she decided to take her life. THE LEMON GROVE Helen Walsh (Amazon, £7.99) This was one of the books recommended by BBC Radio 2’s book club – and it is definitely worth your time to read. Based in Mallorca, you’ll experience the main protagonist’s, Jenn, feelings towards her step-daughter’s new boyfriend.

MY ALOPECIA
W
e take our hair for granted every day that it is on our heads until the day that it decides it no longer wishes to be there. My name is Michelle and I am an alopecia sufferer. I feel like I should introduce my hair loss before I introduce myself because the stigma that surrounds our hair and looking good appears to be far more important to people than the person inside. Alopecia is a mean disease that can slowly, or quickly, make your hair simply fall out. Mine has been a slow process over the last two years. I really thought I’d have a small bald patch and it would grow back - but the patch turned into a big patch, which merged into another patch and it grew and grew slowly until I literally had no hair on the back of my head. It’s devastating. Losing your hair is horrible for anyone but not knowing how to cure it, is sole destroying. I feel it has changed me and the person I was. I have lost my confidence, I feel low emotionally and staying ‘normal’ is a real battle. Dermatology is the specialist area that treats alopecia. I’ve tried steroids, injections and ointments but nothing

has worked. The next treatment for me is immune suppressants, which is a type of chemotherapy – something I have avoided for the time being. I’ve also tried alternative therapies like acupuncture, reflexology and herbal treatments. The amount of vitamins I have consumed this last year has cost me dearly. I do have some sporadic growth in places but it’s certainly not fixed the problem. I’m now trying relaxation and laser light therapy and trying to take as many holidays as I can afford to relax me on the inside in a bid to reduce the stress of my mind. Throughout my research into alopecia, I have met some great people, from fellow sufferers, American dermatologists, hair specialists and hair analyzers. A lovely lady called Vera Pieffer analyzed a sample of my hair and informed me I was intolerant to gluten, sugar, diary, chocolate and even alcohol. It came as a shock but I have changed >

By Michelle Wilson-stimson
my diet and so far I feel better, I’ve lost weight and hopefully it will help my hair. I have also been lucky enough to come across a couple of lovely wig makers. I bought my first real hair wig with the help of my daughter who set up a ‘Just Giving’ page for me. Good wigs are not cheap and she wanted to help raise awareness of the disease and to help her sad, old mum. The wig is great – it nearly matches the long blonde hair I had. I’ve also found Mandeville London. They were re-branding and wanted models to model for them and in return, they would offer a free wig. So I trotted down to London to meet a lovely man called Robert. He and his team were so lovely. They understood me, knew what I wanted and custom designed my old hair for me. The wig is a full hand-tied real European hair wig. I can wear it and swish my head around, style it in any way and it looks like my old hair! I was beyond excited to receive it! Not only do I get to help a great company and raise awareness of the disease but I also have my old hair back, albeit on a fine mesh. But for now, that will do just fine ^

LIZZIE BENTON OFFERS ADVICE & GUIDANCE ABOUT REAL LIFE ISSUES
A
fter spending five years being a ‘traditional’ fashion and lifestyle blogger, I came to the realisation that I wanted to write more meaningful articles that would inspire and perhaps give a little food for thought.
Whether you want to know how to handle that difficult relationship, or bring about more wellbeing, I hope that by sharing my personal experiences in life, it will give you some hope that you’re not alone in this crazy world we live in.
In my short time on this earth, I’ve experienced many ups and downs, both personally, and through watching my friends and family deal with life changing traumas. And it has given me great perspective on how I want to live my life, and inevitably now plays a big role in the decisions I make. Many have often told me that I’m wiser than my years, which I’ve often interpreted as being not much fun and too responsible. But after a few gins, I think that quickly changes!
Ask Boo is advice and guidance about real life issues; the one’s which sometimes we feel too shy to say out loud. This is a place I hope will warm your soul on a dreary day or give you that helping hand through the rollercoaster of life.

Summer brings new things – a new wardrobe, new products and new adventures. These are some of the things I couldn’t live without throughout the blissful season. Even if you’re not going holiday this year, you can still give yourself a gorgeous sun-kissed glow with Dove’s DermaSpa Summer Revived gradual tanning moisturiser. This beautifully scented moisturiser is perfect for people who don’t have experience with fake tanning as you apply it just as you would a moisturiser. After a couple of uses you will notice a subtle, streakfree glow on your skin. Boots £7.49
Carrot oil/ cream is one of my must haves for a beach holiday. The natural formula moisturises your skin as well as accelerating the tanning process. It also makes your tan last a little bit longer which can cheer you up when you’ve got the holiday blues. Be careful though, you must use a strong SPF after you have applied this as most brands of carrot oil doesn’t usually include it.
One of things that a lot of people fail to realise (myself included) is that your hair can get extremely dry when exposed to heat and sun rays. This Lee Stafford Heat Protection Shine Mist is here to save the day. Give your hair a few spritz of this before you go out and it will protect your hair as well as giving it a beautiful shine. Boots £6.49
Holland & Barrett £4.99
Maybelline’s Lash Sensational waterproof mascara is my all-time favourite as it does not come off for love or money .It’s perfect for a pool day or a trip to the beach and most of all, it won’t break the bank.
A pair of wedges can make any outfit look that bit more glam and what makes them even more desirable is that they’re super comfy! You can even go that bit extra and buy a pair of bold sandals to make a statement. H&M £29.99

What? Group meditation lowers crime rates?
M
ore and more people are meditating! World leading entrepreneurs are admitting that they are meditating to continue being on top of their game with their businesses, most holistic therapists out there know that meditation is a clear key to a happier life (for themselves and for their clients). Free Meditation apps are being downloaded more than ever before. There is more and more evidence that this growing trend has masses of personal benefits, to help you consciously think, act, and be happier and clearer within yourself. But did you know: mass meditation creates happier energy all around us… it even reduces social stress and crime rates too? Yes, you heard that right! And when that fact sinks in its really going to cause some paradigm shifts for a lot of people. Scientific studies have proven for decades that mass meditation (group meditation) does something to you and others on the outside too. By outside… we mean it does something to the air around us and other people pick up on these positive vibes. And these proven studies show that amongst many things, it actually reduces crime rates! One of many studies we researched was a two-month national demonstration project conducted in Washington, D.C., showed how meditation groups can reduce crime by over 23% and reduced social stress too. You can find this information through Google too! As part of the not for profit Soul Happy Wellbeing Centre, we are linking in with our vision to create a real heart for Peterborough and help people be their best on a multitude of levels. Summer Party
PLANNING TIPS
S
un and warm weather help to make summer parties some of the most memorable. However, organising a get together outdoors in the UK isn’t always straightforward. To help ensure your party goes without a hitch we’ve come up with a few planning tips. Don’t Rely on the Weather The weather in England is notoriously unreliable so it’s always wise to be prepared for a downpour - even in summer. At Lakeside we have an outdoor balcony allowing you and your guests to enjoy the sun with easy access to shelter should it start raining. FAILSAFE FOOD The easiest way to keep your guests happy at a summer party is with a tasty barbecue. Our delicious barbecue menu features grilled burgers and sausages as well as some mouth-watering vegetarian options. All food is cooked onsite using locally sourced ingredients. Prices start at £18.50 per person. OUTDOOR ACTIVITIES Make the most of the great outdoors with some fun party activities for you guests. Easypick-up-and-play options include French cricket, frisbee and croquet. If you want to get adventurous, our venue overlooks Gunwade Lake with easy access to the water where you
can try all manner of activities, from sailing to windsurfing. At nearby Overton Lake, meanwhile, you can enjoy a pedalo ride or a boat trip. CONSIDER THE NEIGHBOURS A drawback of an outdoor party is that it can be difficult to contain noise. Laughter, chatter and, in particular, music can all unintentionally disturb the neighbours. At Lakeside you won’t have to worry about the decibel levels, our outdoor balcony offers plenty of privacy while inside we can provide music to keep the party spirit alive ^ For more information about hiring our venue for your event, call our friendly team on 01733 233218 or email raj.regmi@meadowbrownrestaurants.com. My generation By Louisa Parr
I
always thought that I was pretty clued up on life, but according to my youngest son (he’s 19 this year), I know very little about today’s music, fashion or the lingo. Now, I’ll be the first to admit that I’m not terribly fond of the music that this decade’s had to offer. Maybe it’s my age, I don’t really care, but I remember being laughed at once by my teenage niece for not knowing who Kanye West was. I responded by asking her if she’d ever heard of Joni Mitchell? “Who?”, she replied... I rest my case.
democratic vote can’t be reached, I’m driving, so ultimately, it’s my choice. So we listen to Tracy Chapman, The Who, Fleetwood Mac or The Rolling Stones perhaps, and everyone in the car, including my youngest offspring, sings along. Now there’s irony for you!
As far as fashion goes, I am what I am and am more than happy with the slightly eccentric, boho chic look. According to my son though, it’s not cool to go with him to his college open Mind you, I’m not adverse to listening evening wearing my vintage pea green to a bit of Florence and the Machine fur coat. Damn it! And there’s or Ed Shearan, I’m not that me thinking I looked cool. I’m “Don’t even archaic. I enjoy listening to obviously too old to be hip and most genres of music, some of get me started on shorthand too young to need one. which have been influenced Don’t even get me started on by my own parents, and I texting or shorthand texting or urban believe that in doing so, I’ve urban slang! enriched the lives of my own slang! OMG! It’s so frustrating! OMG!” kids with my eclectic choices. LMAO! Now apparently, ‘sick` A testament to that will be means ‘good` and ‘peak` means during a long car journey of course, ‘bad` and ‘bare P’s` translates as ‘plenty when everyone wants to be ‘in charge` of money`... or something equally as of the tunes we listen to whilst hurtling lame - it’s no wonder I get confused! down the M11. Arguments usually I’ll tell you one thing though - I can’t ensue, but if a wait until my children have their own kids. History will repeat itself and I’m sure, without a doubt, that my won will be thinking in a similar vein as I am today. After all, according to the great Ms Mitchell, we’re all part of the Circle Game. LOL!!! ^ 52

Butter Bean, Lemon and Black Olive Salad For 4 as main course, 6-8 as side salad/ starter
The sun is coming and with it comes sprouting a host of beautiful fruits and vegetables. Summer is an exciting time of year, we can finally don shorts and flip flops again and be collectively surprised at how white our bodies are! Get out in the garden with healthy salads and fizzy glasses. This recipe is a simple sunshine salad which makes a great quick summertime lunch. Ideal served as a side or starter, add some chunky croutons or toasted nuts for a more substantial dish. THE BITS • 500g cooked or 2 tins butterbeans • 1 small sweet onion or 3 spring onions (finely sliced) • 6 medium sized tomatoes (ripe and sweet) • 1 handful pickled garlic cloves (roughly chopped) • 1/2 courgette (diced) • 1/2 cucumber (diced) • 1 head baby gem lettuce or similar (sliced) • 2 big handfuls black olives • 1 handful parsley (finely sliced) • Extra virgin olive oil • 1 lemon (juice and zest) • Salt and pepper
DO IT Another great recipe idea from Lee Watson of ‘the beach house kitchen’ and author of Peace & Parsnips. Peace & Parsnips by Lee Watson, published by Michael Joseph, £20

Pan Fried Tandoori Chicken
Parveen x
T
hese spicy, tender tasting medallions of chicken are healthy, quick and easy to make. This recipe also works really well as BBQ tandoori chicken. To barbeque, cut the chicken fillets into approximately 2cm cubes and cook on skewers.
Cooking time: 10 minutes Makes 20 to 25 pieces
Ingredients 2 chicken breasts 1 tbsp plain yoghurt ADD SPICE BAG* or 1 tsp of chilli powder* 1 tsp of tandoori powder* ½ tsp of coriander seed powder* ½ tsp of chilli flakes* 2 tsp lemon juice, fresh or bottled 1 tbsp vegetable or sunflower oil 1 tsp salt
Method
1 Cut chicken into medallions (1cm thick) the pieces should be roughly the same size. 2 In a large bowl, add the yoghurt, salt, lemon juice, ADD SPICE BAG or chilli flakes, chilli powder, coriander powder and tandoori powder and mix together - this is the marinade. Now add chicken pieces and coat thoroughly. Leave to marinade at room temperature for 30 minutes. 3 Add 1 or 2 tbsp of oil into a frying pan and heat till oil is hot. 4 Carefully place chicken pieces in the pan. Make sure you leave space between each piece, so you should be able to pan fry 6 or 7 depending on the size of your pan. 5 Cook on high heat for about 1 min on each side to seal the chicken, then a further 2 minutes on each side to make sure the chicken is cooked through. 6 Clean the frying pan with kitchen paper between each batch of chicken and continue to cook all the chicken. Either serve straight away or store in a Tupperware with a lid to keep in all the moisture ^ QueenBee Summer 2017

Whilst the shop shelves are ripe with convenient processed, sugar-laden and chemically grown products, it can be hard to find an honest fruit or vegetable that hasn’t been toxically tampered with. The only way to opt for truly healthy foods is to grow your own - but with so many of us living in flats, shared or temporary accommodation, I wanted to find a way of making healthy, fresh foodgrowing a viable option for us all. After all, home-grown produce has been proven to offer miles more goodness for us and our children than anything our supermarkets can offer - Nutrient, antioxidant, vitamin & mineral rich foods fight off illness, aid healthy development of the brain and body, and offer optimum

mental wellbeing - what could be more important than the health and happiness of our families? We started the QueenBee allotment a few months ago - I was delighted to find so many community allotments around and surprised to find so many were vacant. For only £30 a year, we got to work straight away, beginning with nothing but heaps of optimism and some overgrown land. In less than 2 months we’ve dug and weeded the plot, prepared 15 beds, and planted 30 varieties of vegetables, fruits & herbs - this is more than enough to feed the families of the whole QueenBee team. This got me thinking - if only a few people from a street or block of flats came together, a project like this could be shared easily, taking minimal time individually & providing enough pure & healthy food for not only their own families, but their neighbours too. Perhaps it’s time to come together, and choose your dinner from a SuperHarvest rather than a SuperMarket! I must spread our gratitude to the extremely kind folk at Hampton Hargate Community Allotments - your continued
QueenBeeallotment generosity and kindness make this a thoroughly enjoyable experience. Finding a place of peace of positivity such as this community is a rare treasure by the city. Here, you’re always greeted with friendly, warm smiles - and sometimes a box of fresh eggs! ^ Follow us on instagram for regular allotment updates @queenbeepboro WHAT WE’RE GROWING SO FAR: Tomatoes, peppers, aubergine, peas, beans, spring onions, red onions, colourful carrots, courgettes, pumpkins, squash, parsnip, beetroot, potatoes, purple lettuce, green lettuce, rocket, cauliflower, rhubarb, apples, strawberries, blackcurrants, gooseberries, raspberries, goji berries, cucumelons, chives, thyme, marjoram and coriander. Here’s some of our pics!
> SEWING SEEDS Ground preparation and timing are both key to healthy seed germination. Dig the earth over well to oxygenate the soil. Remove all weeds, root systems and rocks. Mix in fertiliser and quality compost before following the instructions on your seed packet. Also, keep a firm check on the weather – if a late frost is due, hold off your seed sewing! We learned the hard way after losing some of our early plants to an unexpected overnight freeze. If you’re just starting your veg bed, get those seeds in quick for a late Summer harvest! > RECYCLING BOTTLES We found that large 2L or 5L bottles made very successful greenhouses for rapid germination. Cut off the bottom of a bottle and add a couple of holes in the sides for ventilation. Using canes through the bottle-lid holes to keep them in place could be useful in case of strong winds. > ROOTS & PLANTING If you’ve grown plants in small pots intending to transplant them, or are buying plants from a shop, be sure to check the root systems when selecting which ones to use. Healthy plant roots will be white or pale, moist, and will hold the shape of the pot once removed. > HILLING POTATOES To grow a successful harvest of potatoes in a veg bed or pot, start the bed shallow with your prepared earth. Keep well watered. As the leaves of the plant begin to rise above the surface, routinely cover them up with earth – this is called hilling and will encourage more root growth for a fuller harvest ^ QueenBee Summer 2017

HOW MANY TIMES DO I HAVE TO TELL YOU?!
T
he number of cohabiting couples who face problems when they separate, is increasing. This is because increasing numbers of people cohabit rather than marry but as previously stated in this column and elsewhere, “THEY DO NOT HAVE THE SAME LEGAL RIGHTS AS THEIR MARRIED COUNTERPARTS”. YouGov has recently completed a survey of more than 1,000 cohabiting couples across the UK. 35% either believe they have the same rights as married couples or didn’t know. 76% had not heard of cohabitation agreements and only 2% had a cohabitation agreement in place. 35% were unaware if the property they owned together was either beneficial joint tenants or tenants in common.
If you don’t know what the difference is, research it now. The solicitor who conveyed the house into your joint names when you bought it should have gone through the different options with you and created a trust deed if required. If only one of you is the legal owner, you have a whole set of other potential problems. Despite the huge implications of the outcomes of the different property ownership structures, the survey revealed that only 33% were given professional advice when purchasing their current home. This could make the difference in terms of thousands of pounds to either one of you if the relationship breaks down. Whatever your circumstances, if you are living together and especially if you have
children, a cohabitation agreement is essential as an insurance against a possible split. It would be wise to speak to a family specialist about this straight away ^ Belinda Smith is the owner and principal of Belinda Smith and Co., Family Law solicitors based at Asset House, 27-28 Thorpe Wood, Peterborough, PE3 6SR www.bscosolicitors.co.uk

ollowing its phenomenal success last year, the charity project is back for 2017, looking for 40 local women to perform in a concert supporting Sue Ryder’s Thorpe Hall Hospice.
QueenBeemag Absolutely no previous singing experience is necessary, just a willingness to step out of your comfort zone, get stuck in and give it a go! ^ For further information call 07714 017 046 or email info@peterboroughmvchoir.org.uk
Now in its fifth season, Sing for Life has introduced hundreds of local women to the joys of singing while raising thousands of pounds for charity, both for Cancer Research UK and for Thorpe Hall, with over five thousand pounds raised for the hospice last year alone. “The project is not about finding the next Adele; it’s about helping ordinary women find their voice” says Will Prideaux, Sing for Life’s director. “So many people lack confidence or genuinely believe they can’t sing, but deep down just about everyone secretly has a favourite karaoke number, and – we promise –our very experienced music team will have you singing in no time!” “The kind of care Thorpe Hall provides is not just a job, it’s a vocation” says Marina Bridger, one of last year’s Sing for Life women. “It’s fantastic to be able to do something to support this wonderful local cause while doing something exciting and challenging into the bargain. I have discovered a new passion and a whole new group of friends – I’ve never looked back.” Sing for Life launches with introduction sessions on Wednesday 12th July, (7-9pm), Friday 14th July (6-9pm) Saturday 15th July (10.30am-12.30pm).
Yvette Bell (top) and Sophie Claire Hermes both took part in Sing for Life 2016. “It’s was so nice to get to know people of different ages and backgrounds who I would never normally meet, and to learn music different from what I normally sing!” Yvette “I saw the poster and thought I’d go for it. TOP TIPS FROM THE
I
have rounded up some of my favourite cleaning tips for you to help keep your home extra clean and pristine. Some of these are so easy and simple to do and will literally take no time at all.
1 Cleaning cloths and sponges really do harbour germs. My tip is to pop them in the microwave for 2 minutes to kill all those nasty germs. 2 Use salt to clean the iron plate on your iron. Pour some salt onto a tea towel or old cloth and iron over this without the steam option this will help release any sticky patches or dirt. 3 The best way to clean your windows is the old-fashioned way with a newspaper and white wine vinegar. 4 Pop on you rubber cleaning gloves and dampen one of these and then you pick up stray pet hair from cats and dogs. 5 Put the kids’ plastic toys in the dishwasher to get them germ free.
6 Remove hard water stains with lemons. Cut a lemon in half, give the stain a good rub, leave for a while and then rinse with warm water. 8 Never leave your toothbrush near the toilet as when flushed, the germs will jump up and can land on your brush. Keep it as far away as you can. Toothbrushes are full of bacteria from daily usage so to keep them clean, you can wash them with mouthwash or add 64
QueenBee Summer 2017
a few drops of white wine vinegar to a glass and sit your toothbrush in it for around 15 minutes. White wine vinegar is a natural cleaner.
9 When cleaning your make up brushes, get a bowl and add boiling water and a small squirt of your shampoo and then let them swirl around for a while. You don’t want all the bacteria being spread all over your face so try and make this a weekly job.
10 To get your bath towels nice and fluffy. put a big heaped spoonful of baking powder into the washing machine try or drum and then put on a hot wash. This will help bring your towels back to life and will keep them nice and fluffy. I hope you have found these home hacks useful and thank you for reading! ^

MEN DON’T TALK AS MUCH AS WOMEN!
N
ow I’m going to have to tell you that it’s a good thing women talk so much! Most guys might not agree but it’s true. The fact women talk more than men has health benefits for women. The reason behind this relates to mental health and the fact that whilst men hold in their feelings - often living in miserable silence - women will share their worries and concerns with people around them. Women’s ability to do this often allows them to reduce their burden, shifting their perspective of what the real issue might be and enabling them to ask for help if needed. Women seek help more than men. Men will often plead ‘man flu’ when suffering a cold but when it comes to real problems with stress, anxiety or depression, they clam up and say nothing, bearing the brunt of their psychological challenges and that’s a real problem. The latest figures for suicide rates in the UK reveal that 76% of all suicides are men and suicide is the
biggest killer of men under 45. We know these statistics could be different if men just learned from women that it’s okay to admit to feeling crap sometimes. To bring awareness to this senseless situation that ‘us men’ have created, I have taken on a challenge to cycle the Indian Golden Triangle in aid of CALM (Campaign Against Living Miserably). I hope to raise lots of money for CALM, which is part of the Royal Heads Together Campaign. If you are affected by this issue or would like to support me in my challenge please go to our website www.inspiredtochange.biz/calm-indiancycle-challenge or follow us on social media FB/Twitter @garyjohannes ^

In my post, I added the words ‘how come men look amazing with grey hair yet (most) women look ****.’ Never one to mince my words, I knew the post would cause a bit of a heated debate. And it did. Of course, for my fellow Facebooker’s who are grey, it was handbags at dawn. For those who aren’t, those who have a mere smattering of grey and those who simply dye their hair every six weeks or so to banish it, it was a different matter entirely.
Most chose not to go public with their views, of course, messaging me in secret so as ‘not to cause offence’, but the general concensus of opinion was, women who bin the dye (along with their bras), are lazy, have let themselves go and look worse than they did with their natural hair colour. Controversial, I know… And before I get a string of hate-mail, those views are not necessarily my own, personal views! Having said that, I had a full head of highlights recently in a bit to ‘blend in’ the grey. I absolutely hated the end result. My natural chocolate brown hair was suddenly several shades lighter and there was a lot more visible grey around my face. I looked tired, dull, colourless and about ten years older. My newly-highlighted bonce lasted three weeks until I bunged a John Frieda dye on it and suddenly I was me again. £120 down the drain but at least I’d had a jolly good trim… Embracing the grey may be liberating for many, and some women carry it off fabulously – think Helen Mirren, Jamie Lee Curtis and er… maybe some more, but it helps if you have a striking face, a personal stylist and a celeb’s bank balance. You really have to be a certain kind of person to pull it off. And I’m not one of them. I’ve decided I will never go grey gracefully. And I won’t age gracefully either. Life’s too short to pale into insignificance! ^
