Exciting health and wellness trends Plant-based foods, wearable tech, MCT oils, CBD products...
T
rends in health and wellness over the past year have brought us an increased focus on healthy fats like ghee and coconut oil and an explosion in plant-based food options and CBD oils. The future looks just as bright for 2019, with trends that show an increasing focus on full-body wellness and holistic health. Here are some trends we’re super excited to see in the health and wellness this year.
More choices in plant-based alternatives Plant-based meats and dairy have skyrocketed in popularity in the past few years, with the plant-based food and beverage market growing a whopping 62 percent since 2013 and plant-based alternatives conquering the hearts of omnivores, vegetarians and vegans alike. Plant-based products have become increasingly common in new supermarket aisles, with extensive new vegan ranges being introduced. Vegan kebabs anyone? Peterborough based Resist Kitchen (find them on facebook @resistvegankitchen) is a favourite of ours their vegan kebabs are delicious! Check out their new restaurant and bar at The Key Theatre in Peterborough. 4
QueenBee Spring 2019
Alternative MCT oils & other healthy fats Coconut oil emerged as a natural health and wellness darling a few years ago due to its status as an MCT (medium chain triglyceride). It helps stamina, focus and also helps curb cravings. We like the Lucy Bee Extra Virgin Coconut Oil from Holland & Barrett, £12. Intermittent Fasting Intermittent fasting has become a popular technique for improved weight loss and reduced inflammation. While past science on intermittent fasting has largely centered on the male experience, women are exploring the ways in which intermittent fasting can be targeted specifically to women’s health. Expect even more developments on the ways in which this protocol can be adapted for women’s bodies in 2019. Fermented foods, drinks and other digestive wellness products An ever-increasing emphasis on the mindbody-gut connection has emerged in health and wellness circles over the past few years, and as a result, probiotics, fermented foods, and more have been on our minds (and plates). Medical studies show that a healthy gut is the foundation of overall wellness, and more than ever before, consumers are seeking foods that support self-care and healthy immune systems. Try some Captain Kombucha ginger and lemon drink, £2.99 Holland and Barratt. Wearable Fitness Tech On the fitness side of things, wearable tech like smart watches, fitness trackers, and heart monitors will likely increase in popularity over the next year. According to one national survey the prevalence of these gadgets makes
up the top growth category for fitness trends in 2019, coming in above group training, HIIT and bodyweight training. One of the favourites this year is Fitbit Versa Smart Watch, £159, John Lewis. CBD Oil There has been a massive growth in the popularity of CBD oil in the past year. We've seen many features in the national press exploring the benefits, the cleanest products on the marketplace today, and frequently asked questions about the oil. If you are considering adding CBD to your wellness regime then check out the new local business Hapi Hemp. They have a superb range of CBD oils, handmade CBD chocolate, CBD teas and topical CBD skincare. All of their products have full lab reports and are UK home office approved. Hapi Hemp said “It’s clear that hempderived products are going mainstream, if not by wide distribution, then by word of mouth.”

QueenBeefashion MICHELLE ABBOTT, OUR REGULAR STYLE CONTRIBUTOR TALKS ABOUT HER LOVE OF JUMPSUITS!
I
’m talking about jumpsuits…. if you want to be very current we can talk about boiler suits. The former is slightly more fitted than the latter, but essentially this is a one stop item to easy dressing, whatever your age. A few years ago the jumpsuit was relegated as a relic of 70s dressing now they are firmly established as a contemporary, versatile and timeless all in one outfit. There is one, only one, drawback with a jumpsuit. The ‘going to the ladies’ issue. It’s a relatively minor annoyance, and with practice can be quickly negotiated even when in a bit of a hurry. Other than that, I have lots of love for a jumpsuit (or boiler suit). The key to wearing one is really very simple. If you find one which has a drawstring waist try it - it can be adjusted for the most flattering fit. Check your rear

view in the mirror and if you like it you’ve found a style which works for you. Styling is easy - for a relaxed off duty look, add a white trainer and cuff the leg a little add a denim jacket over the top. Done. For colder weather, layering works really well - I slip a fine knit ribbed polo neck under mine which gives a cool (yet warm!) 70s edge. For a smarter take, wear your jumpsuit under a fitted blazer and add an ankle boot - this immediately gives a polished edge to the outfit and makes it more wearable for us, ahem, slightly more mature ladies. Going out? Add a pointed toe, high heel court shoe (leopard print looks amazing), your blazer and a great bag - undo one extra button (at the top not the bottom!) or lower the zip, for a bit of allure!
Get the right style for you, and you’ll have a versatile, useful and current piece which you’ll have in your wardrobe for years. I started collecting jumpsuits several years ago and still wear them all. I’ve selected a few posts from my Instagram page @maison_abbott to give you some styling inspiration (see below pics). Great places to hunt for jumpsuits are Boden, Marks and Spencer, Topshop and John Lewis. Happy styling! ^

Magic in the air S by Lexie Wrightson
pring, there is a little bit of magic in the air , the days start to lengthen and the bulbs start to peep though the soil, then in a matter of weeks there are clumps of wonderful sunshine yellow daffodils everywhere.
The 21st Matrch is the time of the Vernal equinox (also known as Ostara, said to have originated from an Anglo-Saxon, spring goddess' name, Eostre.) It is a time of equal day and night and a marker that the warmer summer days are on their way. It a time of renewal, rebirth and a time to transition as the earth awakens from the sleepy cold of winter. It’s a season of creation, a drive to move on with life and start anew. There are plenty of ways you can welcome spring at home. • S pring clean you house from top to bottom, clearing out anything you no longer need. • I nitiate new order into your life. Tidy those cupboards, sort out paperwork or start a new health regime. Out with the old and in with the new. • S mudge your house with sage or incense after a spring clean (ancient ritual of burning herbs to cleanse). Open the 12
QueenBee Spring 2019
windows and work from top to bottom wafting sage or incense into all the corners to remove any negativity. There are plenty of excellent articles online and I love to use Palo Santo, a fragrant sacred wood.
• Plant the seeds of your dreams for the year ahead - write them down, action plan and review them regularly to remind yourself and help them grow. • This is a good time of year to sow seeds for vegetables to harvest later in the year. Bless the seeds as you put them in the ground, thanking them for a bountiful harvest. You can start small with a few pots of herbs if space is limited. • Get outside and connect with nature, sit with your back against a tree and mediate. It’s a wonderful chance to celebrate the balance of light and dark as the sun begins to tip the scales, and we look forward to summer ^ > For more details visit www.lexiewrightson.com Contact Lexie on 07915078843 or email abwrightson@hotmail.co.uk

My energy returned and my depression disappeared. This may sound extreme but I promise you it’s true. With such strong passion and belief in CBD, I have launched by own business, Hapi Hemp. CBD oil has risen in popularity in the last year with its increased availability across the UK. But what is it, what are the benefits and how do you find it? Cannabidiol (CBD) is one of the 80-plus active cannabinoids found in the hemp plant. The oil is extracted from the plant and mixed with other plant oils. Ideally, your CBD oil would be full spectrum, which means that it contains trace amounts of other minor cannabinoids - this has been shown to have a more beneficial effect ^ What is CBD? The full term is Cannabidoil (CBD) is a Phytocannabidoid and is one of the most prevalent chemical compounds found in industrial hemp. It can help in supporting overall well being and is non-psychoactive so won’t make you high. One of the main things that prevents many people from trying CBD is that they mistakenly think that it’s the same as using recreational drugs. It is not.

Sam's makeover...
F
ollowing on from 'Sam's story' on the previous page, QueenBee arranged for her to have a hair and make-up overhaul, thanks to Kiss & Makeup and Locks & Shades.
Hannah, from Kiss and Makeup said: "For Sam’s makeover, we wanted to make sure she felt like the most beautiful version of herself! In our consultation, we discussed her go-to colours and how makeup usually sits on her skin, to decide which tones and products would give her the perfect look.
Firstly, we shaped Sam’s brows and her face was instantly framed. We then decided to go with subtle pink tones for Sam’s eye makeup, enhanced with a smokey eyeliner and finished off with a natural false eyelash strip. Sam was keen to have a full coverage foundation and flawless looking skin, but without looking ‘cakey’ or feeling heavy to wear. We chose a water-based foundation and set with a powder, to ensure a longlasting finish. With a light bronze and pop of blusher to sculpt out Sam’s cheekbones, we finished off with a glaze of lippy - she was now looking super glam!"

SAM'S VERDICT
Peterborough Dry Cleaning & Garment Alterations
"My hair was done by Jemma at Locks 'n' Shades in Yaxley. There's a great atmosphere in the salon, lots a of herbal teas to choose from and a biscuit barrel! Jemma sat with me to discuss colours to suit my skin tone and also the sort of style I was looking for. Since my hair has grown back, I have decided to keep it short as so many friends have said it suits me and it is easy to manage. My hair is naturally very curly, so I needed something that took that into consideration – also I wanted to get rid of the yellow! Jemma recommended using a very ash toner which had a pinkie toner and I loved it! Now onto my make-up which was by Kiss & Make Up. I was really nervous about this as I don't really wear a lot of makeup and I didn’t want to look too caked!

PERSONAL ALLOWANCES By Bird & Co Certified Public Accountants, www.birdandco.ltd
B
asic-rate taxpayers will get an extra £130 in 2019-20, as personal allowances increase from £11.850 to £12,500 a year, earlier than promised in the Conservative manifesto. Higher-rate taxpayers will also be better off, with the higher-rate threshold rising to £50,000 (including the personal allowance), equivalent to an extra £860 per year. However, some of the gains will be offset by increased national insurance contributions, as the 12% NI band is tied to the higher-rate threshold. As such, working age employees will pay 12% of their earnings between £8,632 and £50,000 and 2% on higher amounts. Marriage Allowance Don’t forget, married couples and those in civil partnerships can transfer up to £1,185 of personal allowance (10% of the £11,850 personal allowance for 2018-19) to their partner for 2018-19. This can also be backdated to April 2016

You might be eligible for this if: • You’re married, or in a civil partnership and are not in receipt of married couple’s allowance • One of you earns less than the personal allowance so is not liable to tax or liable to tax at the higher or additional rates. This means an income of less than £11,850 while your partner is a basic rate taxpayer with income between £11,851 and £46,350 • You were born after 6 April 1935. If you weren’t, you might be able to get married couple’s allowance ^ > Bird & Co are based in Yaxley. Visit our website at www.birdandco.ltd or call us on 01733 850989.

QueenBee with Alexandra Agboke
Alex Agboke is QueenBee’s self-styled fashion guru - she can answer all of your questions and offer top notch advice. So ask away... she’s here to help! Alex, I’m a total apple shape: I can never decide what sort of lines will look best on me. Can you suggest something? Alex Hey lovely... so you are, what I like to call an oval, where you carry more of your weight on your mid-section and your waist is the widest part of your frame. Your bum may be a little flatter but your legs are most likely your best asset. The key for you is to de-emphasise your tummy area and create a more defined waist as well as lengthen your look. This is achieved by choosing clothing that adds curves and fullness to your lower body and tops that taper to a waist. It’s all about illusion (smile) V or U-necklines, wrap style tops and jackets as well as empire dress lines and tops that flair at the hips. Think peplum in a more structured fabric for a dressier look. To add a little more shape to your derriere look for a trouser with pronounces hip and rear pockets. 20
QueenBee Spring 2019
You have amazing legs so feel free to play with skirt lengths, but don’t go too short otherwise you will further a top-heavy look. Try a long, full or wide leg trouser or a mid-waist kick flare jean too. Hi Alex, I’m in the working from home/ school run/walking the dog rut. I love a skinny jean look but it's annoying when I'm sat down. Any tips on how I can zhoush things up? Bearing in mind I need comfort so can't be in a heel. Alex Okay, so as spring approaches I can't wait to get out my elasticated paper bag waisted jeans! In summer, a chambray boyfriend style trouser makes a great alternative to a skinny jean and is equally cool when you wear them with sneakers or sandals.
QueenBeefashion
For a more urban look why don't you try a leather jegging; they are stretchy but look super cool and edgy and you can still wear them with your chelsea boots or wellies for the dog walk. When it comes to heels and comfort a block heel is definitely the way to go. They elongate your leg but you aren't going to get caught between the cobbles on the school run. AcroYoga croYoga’ comes from the combination of the two words ‘Acrobatic’ and ‘Yoga’. It’s a beautiful partner yoga practice that teaches people to trust, communicate and support one another in a really playful way. Together they work as a team to overcome limiting beliefs, boosting their confidence whilst getting stronger and more flexible physically as well as mentally.
When practised with someone you’re in synch with it becomes a dance of moving meditation with another person. What it offers is that it teaches you about your relationship with yourself and your relationship to others. You’ll find Balance, Strength, Equanimity and Poise and begin to understand the relationship between Yin and Yang, the necessity of giving and 24

One of the best things about AcroYoga is that it is so much FUN! As adults, many of us have forgotten how to play. Human beings like other animals are made to PLAY, it brings us joy, creativity and wonder. Kath and Simon Burrows of AcroAlchemy showing off some poses in Stamford. QueenBeefitness It has the ability to transform people in a profound way as they learn to unlock their true potential. Through the practice we learn to embrace fear and surrender to it as we learn to move in ways we’ve never experienced before. The very nature of AcroYoga encourages closeness and community. However, with the shared fun and laughter, there are also challenges and difficulties, sometimes we may fall. Failure and frustration are present in AcroYoga and in whatever else we do so it becomes a metaphor for life. The question becomes ‘How do we define failure, how do we move through it and past it? How do we find or define success?’ AcroYoga provides that safe supportive space to explore these questions. It’s where we can practise how we deal with challenges. Each partnership is an opportunity to see and learn from how we respond. Communication, trust and connection are key. When we’re in synch and working together, it feels like we make the impossible possible ^

IT'S ALL ABOUT THEM
BROWS! by Rebecca Jones
I
remember when I was a teenager and I would regularly go on a huge tweezing spree with my eyebrows, constantly ending up with sparse, unflattering arches. But at the time I was like, wow they look so cool! Now I regret it and I vowed to myself I would never over-tweeze again. I let them grow but unfortunately, they have not come back. So, in the end I had mine microbladed and I am now in love with my luscious amazing brows.
But don’t worry my lovelies, if you have over plucked those bad boys there are ways to speed up growth, hide the damage with makeup or fix them once and for all with semi-permanent makeup. But first, hide your tweezers and let your eyebrows grow out naturally. Tweeze any stray hairs if you must, but don't be tempted to go any further. Because before you know it, a pluck there and a pluck here and you'll end up with nothing! HOW TO FIX YOUR OVER-TWEEZED EYEBROWS... KEEP YOUR HANDS OFF. Seriously, leave your brows well alone! Tweeze away the fine stray hairs but nothing more and don’t touch the body of the brow. It can take from 26
QueenBee Spring 2019
at least six weeks to six months for your brows to grow back completely, depending on much you have tweezed away already. In some cases, like mine they did grow back completely and I was left with very thin unsightly brows. Also, the older we get the less hair we seem to have on our brows, it seems to fall off and attached to other places on the face where we don’t want it. CONDITION YOUR BROWS. When you over-pluck your eyebrows, the hair follicles can get damaged. Which can lead to permanent hair loss. There are conditioning treatments you can use to help promote the growth of our eyebrows again. I recommend Limelife By Alcone’s, Dew Date oil (£26) or the Forty Cure cream (£34). It can help bring back the moisture and repair the skin and follicles.
QueenBeebeauty MAKEUP TO THE RESCUE. Use a brow brush and comb your eyebrows into your ideal shape. Using an eyeshadow in a similar colour as your natural hairs, lightly feather in small strokes of colour to fill in the gaps and spaces. Then apply a brow gel to keep them in place. I suggest using Limelife By Alcone’s professional grade Strike rich brow gel (£18) which you can get in clear through to dark brown. You could even use the eyebrow gel on its own if you have a good amount of hair. That way it will create a sleek brow and will finish off your makeup look nicely.
to create before any hair removal happens. Afterwards, you can either go back every couple of weeks to get touched up or tweeze them yourself. Remember, take a few hairs at a time and step back from the mirror every few hairs or so to check your progress to avoid over-plucking. MAKE THEM PERMANENT. If you are still not happy with the shape, or they are not full enough due to over plucking them perhaps look at the option of microblading. This creates a lovely hyper realistic effect and means your brows are perfection 24/7. Drop me a message to book in for a free consultation at The Embrowdery Company ^
SEEK HELP FROM A PROFESSIONAL. When your eyebrows have grown out, head to a professional to get your eyebrows tweezed, waxed or threaded. Be descriptive on what you do and do not want. Make sure you can see the shape they are going
Here you can see my microblading results before and after. It completely changes the face and opens up the eyes. Eyebrows are just super important to the balance of the face. Get them right and everything else will flow!

THE LATEST TECHNIQUES IN NON-SURGICAL FACE LIFT
T
he demand for cosmetic procedures is stronger than ever with patients looking for the latest innovations to make them look and feel better about themselves. There is certainly a demand for cosmetic procedures with predictable results, little discomfort and minimal down time and risks of adverse reactions such as allergies. More and more people are choosing non-surgical cosmetic treatments as they are more in control of the final outcome and can return quickly to their busy lives. Non-surgical face lift is gaining an incredible popularity using a combination of thread lifting, threat rejuvenation, botox and dermal fillers. There have been differing opinions on whether or not threat lifting actually works.Yes, it does... provided it is done using the correct technique and by a skilled practitioner using only highest quality of resorbable barbed threads. Natural polydiaoxanone threads have been used for over 30 years as a resorbable suture materials in different fields of medicine. With time, studies revealed mechanically induced skin tension and a stimulation of new cell and collagen formation. Not only do the threads lift sagging skin and improve the appearance of jowls and nasolabial lines but they also improve the skin quality and texture. As a

result, the threads have high safety profile with complete absorption within 6 months to a year, having synthesized new collagen in the facial skin. The procedure of placing the threads causes minimal discomfort and downtime with slight swelling and bruising lasting about a week. The effects are evident straight away and for up to 2 years depending on age, lifestyle and skin condition. THE SARCOMA SLAYER By Emma Willis
I
write this on the first anniversary of the day my world fell apart. James was told on Valentines Day 2018 that he had Epithelioid Angiosarcoma, something we, and many others, had never heard of. Newly married, young and very naive, we hadn’t expected cancer to affect us. James was twenty-nine at diagnosis. The prognosis was not great but James was extremely positive about all the treatments he was offered. After three different chemotherapies, two rounds of radiotherapy and more beetroot juice than anyone should ever drink, James was still determined to make the most of every single moment. He had six tumours in his brain and multiple lesions in both his lungs and liver but he never once complained. He was the most courageous, incredible and inspiring person I will ever meet. So what have I learned? So many things but here are the most important! - If you lose a loved one, run a marathon or take on a physical challenge! The training is so intense that you’re too tired to be sad! You’ll also raise money and awareness for something you feel passionate about. - Embrace all opportunities – you never know who or what will be the thing that changes your life!
32
QueenBee Spring 2019
- Tell everyone you love that you love them -h aving no regrets in that department is a saviour on a dark day! -P eople are amazing but dogs are even better! My Staffy, Norman, is an incredible comfort and very non-judgemental on the days when I can’t keep it together. He’s also an excellent snuggler, which James loved a lot! - Finally, when in doubt about anything, I ask myself ‘What would James do?’ (WWJD?). At James’ memorial, we gave everyone a ‘WWJD?’ wristband and there have been a few questionable interpretations of James’ exuberant personality! James lost his battle with cancer after ten months. My purpose now is to continue his legacy by screaming and shouting about Sarcoma until everyone knows what it is and what to look out for (weird lumps, particularly on limbs), to support as much research and as many people affected by Sarcoma as possible ^ > Please follow my progress via my Just Giving page www.justgiving.com/fundraising/ emma-sarcomaslayer-willis

eganism is on the rise. Whether it’s ‘meat-free Monday’ or a fully plant-based lifestyle, it’s no longer a way of life adopted by a select few who shop in health food stores. More and more people are applying this very principle to their beauty regime too and thanks to hitech formulas from the most innovative of brands, there's no compromising on quality. First things first, what makes a product vegan? Obviously, it needs to be totally cruelty-free, so any product that uses animal testing is out. A full ban on animal testing has been in place in the UK since 2013, but continues to happen in over 80 countries worldwide. In China, it’s a legal requirement so if your favourite brand operates there, then (sorry to break it to you) it endorses animal testing. Vegan skincare products do not contain any animal by-products or ingredients. See the list on the next page for some of the ingredients to look our for. You may be surprised at how few of them you want to apply to your face all of a sudden!
It can be quite astonishing to find out how many animal by-products are squeezed into cosmetics and given misleading names for the sake of sales. This is especially surprising when you consider how many vegan and cruelty-free brands there are out there that you could be using instead. The Vegan Society’s sunflower symbol has become a trusted trademark to help consumers identify vegan-friendly 34
QueenBee Spring 2019
products. But as it costs money to certify, not all products that make the grade actually have the stamp. It’s also worth noting that the certification doesn’t require you to only sell vegan products, so if that’s a key stipulation for you, then it’s best to do some digging on the brand’s website. There are plenty of effective alternatives to animal-derived ingredients. GUANINE is a crystalline material that’s shimmering or light-diffusing and found in crushed fish scales. It’s in most mascaras, nail polishes and lipsticks. TALLOW is a common ingredient in many cosmetics including eye makeup, lipstick, makeup bases and foundations. To the everyday consumer, it’s more common name would be rendered animal fat. The process involves boiling animal carcasses until a fatty substance is produced, ready to add to cosmetics and apply to one’s face. GELATIN - similar to tallow, gelatin is the boiled skin, tendons, ligaments and bones of animals. It’s aliases include gel, hide glue, gelatine, isinglass, kosher and halal gelatin. It can be spotted hiding in creamy cosmetics and nail treatments. LANOLIN is a greasy yellow substance made from secretions (sebum) from the skin glands of sheep to condition their wool. AMBERGRIS It may seem unbelievable, but this ingredient is derived from the waxy oil that lines whale’s stomachs. Surprisingly enough, this oil substance is used to make the scent “set” in perfumes. COLLAGEN is found in cosmetic lipplumping glosses, this is a fibrous protein from animal tissue that has no proven effect on your own collagen reproduction. ESTROGEN is obtained by extracting urine from pregnant horses. Also listed as Estradiol this can be found in most perfumes, restorative creams or lotions ^

S
pring is here! There’s a spring in your step as you watch nature emerge from its winter slumber, reminding you that it’s time for fresh, vibrant energy which flows into every cell of your body with every breath you take. Shedding layers of clothing and beliefs that no longer serve, you rediscover your yearning for newness, light-heartedness and joy and find yourself naturally drawn to uplifting smells, lighter textures and colours. It’s time for renewal! One of the best ways to honour this need is to spruce up your beauty regime with an all-natural, ecofriendly facial toner that tightens the pores and purifies the skin, supporting its amazing ability to regenerate itself. The below ultra-simple, yet effective recipe is based on witch hazel which is rich in antioxidant phenols and tannins that cleanse, tone and refresh the skin by calming down irritation and inflammation and promoting healing. The essential oils of fennel, tea tree, neroli and basil do not only smell fantastic, but soothe and rebalance the skin (apparently, basil essential oil is known as the Oil of Renewal!) ^
38
QueenBee Spring 2019
“RENEWAL” FACIAL TONER Ingredients: 1 cup distilled witch hazel 2 drops fennel essential oil 2 drops tea tree essential oil 2 drops neroli essential oil 2 drops basil essential oil How to make:
1. Pour the witch hazel into a spray bottle or a glass bottle with a tight-fitting lid. 2. Add the essential oils into the bottle and mix well. Yes, it’s that simple. Feel free to store either in your fridge for a toner with a cooling effect, or in your bathroom cabinet so that it’s always on hand. How to apply: 1. After washing your face, either spray the toner directly on your face or wipe your face with a cotton wool pad soaked in the toner. 2. Gently pat your face with fingertips to promote circulation and allow the toner to absorb quickly into your lovely face. 3. For extra moisturisation and nourishment, apply your favourite face cream or feel great salve that you can find on the Feel Great Soap website www.feelgreatsoap.com > If you’d like more DIY skincare recipes, please subscribe to my free newsletter at www.feelgreatsoap.com

Constructive steps for dealing with overwhelm by Melanie Coeshott
I
try to take life and its challenges in my stride, but I’m not immune to feeling overwhelmed at times.
Overwhelm manifests itself for me personally as a giddy, nauseous feeling. You may experience different symptoms that you class as overwhelm. Or you may have similar symptoms, but call them something different. Sometimes my feelings of overwhelm can dissipate on their own, but often I take steps to address them. Tips for dealing with overwhelm: Recognition The earlier I recognise my signs, the better the chance of dealing with them promptly & minimising their impact. Talking Sometimes just talking through things helps. Once the thoughts rushing around my head get expressed into words, this can help me to find a way forward. The listener may also have some useful suggestions, or at least help me to put things into context. Lists Getting thoughts out of my head and onto paper can be useful. This help eithers to bring greater perspective, or some
specific actions! Either way, it allows me headspace to move forward. Priorities Key factors include importance and urgency. Focus on the bits that are in our control & try not to worry about the rest. Plan Once I have my list and priorities, the next step is planning. This helps me to juggle different items, and can help with efficiency & effectiveness. Resist taking anything else on My natural tendency is to take on a lot across multiple dimensions of my life. Before I feel overwhelmed, I need to remind myself that my plate is already full and to not take on anything else! Avoiding overwhelm altogether? This article has been about dealing with overwhelm, not how to avoid it. I’d love to say that I’ll never feel it again in the future, but who knows? I’d rather have tools to deal with overwhelm rather than protecting myself from it. Life is too short, after all ^ > Check out www.agelifebalance.com for more inspiring articles on living well for today and the longer term, coaching & workshops.

And the beat goes on... A s a teenager in 1980, we moved to a new town and I had to change schools. I soon made friends with a girl called Suzanne and we got on like a house on fire, mainly due to the fact that neither of us were very fond of the early 80’s pop culture.
One random Friday evening, my new found bestie very kindly invited me to go along with her to listen and maybe have a dance to the kind of tunes that she was into. I remember feeling a little apprehensive that night as I walked through the doors of the village hall. It was semi dark and very hot and sweaty, the music was booming. The floor was covered in white dust and the air smelt like Johnson’s baby powder! I looked at Suzanne with a worried face, but she just smiled and said “come on, you’ll love it !” I followed her further into the room and as I gazed out across the floor, I could do nothing but stand in awe at the sight before me.
dancing alone, yet together, By Louisa Parr completely engrossed in the music. No~one stood there chatting in small groups nor bopped around their handbags like I’d seen before at school discos. The entire floor was dedicated to dancing only, this was serious stuff. And the tunes... wthey blew this fifteen year old away.
It was Northern Soul of course, derived from old black American gospel, early R & B, jazz and soul music from the late fifties and even earlier. Don’t know why, but I’d never heard it before. I remember the song the crowd were dancing to, ‘It really hurts me girl’ by The Carstairs and from that very moment on, I was hooked. I danced all night non-stop to the likes of ‘Ann Sexton’s, ‘You’ve been gone too long’ and to what is now one of my all time favourites, ‘I’m on my way’, by Dean Parrish.
“These kids were breezing across the slippery boards like they were floating ”
The place was packed, the atmosphere charged. I’d never seen anything like it. These kids were breezing across the slippery boards like they were floating. Their bodies moved with ease, shuffling rhythmically as the heavy beat or tempo changed, effortlessly sliding and spinning around the room with such grace, a dance with a style all of its own. They weren’t dancing in any kind of sequence, more freestyle, but everyone on the floor seemed to move to the same heartbeat, 42

Northern Soul has stood the test of time and along with a new generation of followers, still firmly holds its place on the music scene today. Along with its very own style of Oxford bags, Dr Martens and Fred Perry, I’m sure that just like me, thousands of other fans will be there, cutting some serious moves out on the floor when the mood takes them. So as long as these timeless classics keep playing, we’ll be dancing to their magic. Keep the faith ^

t last, Spring is here. So, where do you want to be to open your Easter eggs this year?
Easter is now a popular time to get away, with sunnier European destinations starting to warm up particularly as it falls in April this year. By then Turkey will be getting into the low 20’s, t-shirt and shorts weather for most of us. All year round sunshine destinations in the Canaries will

be really warming up and of course Cape Verde or the Caribbean will already be basking in 30 degree heat – lovely! If you are only looking for a short break at Easter, then a City break is an obvious choice. Wandering around destinations such as Rome or Krakow should only need a light jacket and jeans with the possibility of much warmer weather. There are some great deals to be had with many airlines flying from Stansted. If Easter is already sorted and maybe your summer break, what about 2020? It may sound like madness to be thinking that far ahead right now, but most tour operators will launch their 2020 deals in March or April THIS year – and that is when the best bargains can be had, with just a small deposit and often payment plans available. The launch time is also the best time to get free child places and, as you can imagine, they are soon snapped up. Have you thought about Montenegro? Probably not but it is becoming more popular with many tour operators building hotels there specifically for the UK market. The Dominican Republic and Cuba remain favourites for people seeking out an all inclusive holiday in the Caribbean. Deals start from £899 for two weeks. When costing an all inclusive holiday, I always deduct what I would spend at home on shopping to look at affordability. The take off your commuting costs, something for your gas and electricity and it soon starts paying for itself! OK, maybe not but those two weeks in the Caribbean are far more affordable than you may think. One more thing before you go. It was in the news recently that booking through a home based personal travel agent is
becoming ever more popular. And that is what I am – YOUR personal travel agent, available to offer my wealth of experience at a time to suit you, and to do all of the legwork for you. All you need to do is to pay, from the comfort of your home. It really is the best of both worlds – the convenience of the internet, but with the personal service and not being left at in the hands of a distant call centre. I look forward to arranging your holiday very soon ^

came across decoupage a few years ago and found it to be very creative and environmentally friendly. Upcycling and recycling of existing home decor along with the relative ease of learning, is the principle attraction to this form of craft. Derived from the French word decouper, which means “to cut up”, decoupage is the art of decorating objects using paper cut outs, paint effects, decorative details and layers of lacquer and varnish. Due to the multiple coats of varnish and meticulous sanding, the finished products look like they are professionally painted. Here I introduce a simple and easy decoupage idea by decorating a small canvas. With Spring finally here, I thought it would be fun to use a daffodil printed napkin. I hope you’ll get inspired and have fun making it! ^ > For more inspirations, follow my page on facebook and instagram @krafateria. If you have further interest in crafting, look out for my one to one workshop on decoupaging.

LIZZIE BENTON OFFERS ADVICE & GUIDANCE ABOUT REAL LIFE ISSUES
Q: I don’t trust my partner’s best friend. Whenever we meet up he subtly criticises me and undermines what I’m saying so I end up feeling stupid. He does it in such a way my partner doesn’t really notice - what should I do? A:Coming between friends is never a good idea, but the fact that he is making you feel uncomfortable is not good for you or your relationship. While you may want to express your feelings about this friend to your partner, this could cause an argument, especially if he doesn’t notice what’s going on. The next time this friend makes a comment that makes you feel uncomfortable, get your partner to be involved in the conversation as much as possible. If his friend is doing it in an underhand way you need to try and ensure your partner sees this for himself.
Unfortunately, as much as we want to ‘warn’ people about others, we can’t, and have to let them really experience their behaviour for themselves - otherwise we simply come off as looking petty. Alternatively, try to have a group outing and see if he is the same with other people, this could just be his character and not a personal attack. If he truly does make you uncomfortable too many times, avoid being around him or left alone with him. You do not need negative influences in your life. Ultimately, he may have some bigger issues that he is dealing with, for example, he could be jealous of the relationship you have with your partner? Try to be mindful of why he’s acting like this, and if you need to express yourself perhaps meet up with him and ask if there’s a bigger issue. lizaboo.co.uk ^

CELEBRATE WITH A PRE-NUP!
A
Pre-Nuptial, or Pre-Marital Agreement as it can be known, does not usually feature very highly on the list of the happy couple’s wedding arrangements.
But if you are planning to marry some time soon, you could give some thought to the good sense of drawing up a Pre-Marital Agreement if either of you feels uncomfortable in any way about the prospect of an equal sharing of your assets if you did ever have to go your separate ways. This doesn’t have to put a dampener on the joyful occasion. Look at it as a form of insurance against a worse case scenario. The brutal fact is, it has to be said, that one third of marriages end in divorce so this is an insurance policy that could prove useful.
Pre-nuptial Agreements have been steadily gaining status in the family law of England and Wales over the last couple of decades. Provided an agreement is entered into freely by both parties with full knowledge of the assets involved and the implications of committing to its terms, it will take precedence over the usual principles of equal sharing on divorce applied by the courts. Pre-nups are popular with those marrying for a second time (or more!) but they are available to anyone. To ensure a pre-nup is effective,
both of you should consult your own specialist solicitor. Happy wedding bells! ^ Belinda Smith is the owner and principal of Belinda Smith and Co., Family Law solicitors based at Asset House, 27-28 ’t Thorpe Wood, Peterborough, ” PE3 6SR www.bscosolicitors.co.uk

QueenBeegardens
Kerry loves gardening By Kerry Cooper
H
ello QueenBee Readers. I hope you’ve all had a wonderful year so far and are as excited as I am that SPRING IS HERE!
March is the month you can really step back into your garden and start the pruning process. Look out for any dead foliage and don’t be afraid to start snipping to remove lagging stems. Slugs love to make an appearance at this time of year. Be vigilant! Spring brings happiness and colour with snowdrops, daffs, primrose, crocus and tulips to name but a few in your outdoor spaces, and it’s the time you give your lawn, soil, tubs and garden equipment a health check and spruce up. If any of your garden plants have future height, put the cane supports in now so the plants grow up through them. Adding supports afterwards is difficult and can look obvious. 52
QueenBee Spring 2019
Slow release fertiliser will feed trees, shrubs and hedges by gently forking it into the soil surface. Your soil will appreciate a nice layer of compost as it warms up into April. Time to feed! It’s time to prune your ‘garden show stoppers’ - roses, clematis, hydrangea, fuchsia and heather all appreciate a good snip to remove all aging flowers and woody stems. I really reduce all my garden now. Just look out for new shoots appearing and cut above the shoots, not below, very important. Roses should be fed in the early Spring just as their leaves begin to grow. Roses that bloom continuously are hungry and benefit from nourishment. Slow release organic fertiliser is my preferred product. Available from most garden centres or online. Daffodils for me are the flower of Spring but sadly they will start
to ‘go over’. I’m sure you will be cutting a batch for indoors to brighten up your homes. I always have the same complaint with daffs from budding gardeners that initially there are lots of trumpets, then each year they reduce. So here is my best advice: Once the bloom is finished and you have cut or deadheaded the flowers, the bulb uses its foliage to create energy for next year. Leave completely alone for six weeks, or until the leaves start to turn yellow and deteriorate. Cutting back leaves or mowing daffs too early will result in a poor crop or no flowers next Spring. So let them rest and relax. Finally always think about the bees and insects who have had a rough few months.
Top Ten Spring Pollinating Plants: Crocus (Crocus), Galanthus (Snowdrops), Hellebore (Christmas/Lenton Rose), Muscari Neglectum (Grape Hyacinth), Malus Domestica (Apple Tree), Ribes Sanguineaum (Flowering Currant), Primula Vulgaris (Primrose), Erica Carnea (Heather). See you in June and happy gardening!

Fenland Ramblings Yarwell – Nassington – Old Sulehay Nature Reserve – Yarwell
T
his is one of my favourite walks and I only discovered it in October last year. The weather was unseasonably warm – twenty-six degrees – and although we were originally following one walking route, we got lost and ended up doing this one! Park your car in Yarwell village (Mill Road is a good spot) and walk along the road until you reach Yarwell Country Park. Visitors are allowed to wander in and a stroll along the stretch of the river Nene where the canal boats are moored is worth a deviation. You need to make sure you cross the river here and follow the signpost to Nassington. It is a little confusing as the river splits into two tributaries at this point and merge into one river again a little further south. Follow the river through woodland until you reach open fields again. The river here is gorgeous and there are some gently shelving areas where you can access the water for a spot of wild swimming if it takes your fancy. Continue walking along the path and you will eventually see the village of Nassington across the meadows. Follow the footpath through this open space, back over the river by way of footbridge, and into the village. Cross Fotheringhay Road over to the Black Horse pub – lovely for a quick pit stop – and then turn left onto Church Street. Prebendal Manor, a grade one listed building and the

oldest dwelling in Northamptonshire, is along this road. Dating back to Anglo Saxon times it has close connections to Richard III and is open to the pubic on selected dates during the summer. The nearby church is also worth a look. Continue walking along Church Street and you will stumble across Elsie’s Vintage Tea Room, a pretty, buntingstrewn, old-fashioned teashop where you can feast on homemade cakes and sandwiches with tea served in vintage china teapots. Head north onto Northfield Lane, leaving the village behind you and follow the footpath bearing left, back into open countryside. Continue until you eventually reach Sulehay Road, which skirts along the nature reserve. Deviate here for an adventure in the forest or follow the road all the way back into Yarwell, over the crossroads, past (or stopping at!) The Angel Inn and back onto Mill Lane. This is a fabulous, easy-going, circular walk of around 5 miles on pretty level terrain. It’s well worth making a day of it as there are plenty of places to visit en route. And if you pick a fair-weather day then there really is no more perfect a stroll than this one. Happy rambling! ^ > fenlandramblings.tracyhefferon.com

The healing power of sound... By Lucy Grace
T
he science and history of sound healing is truly a fascinating world of study. As a music student, I remember being captivated particularly by an image of water particles, under microscope, being exposed to different sound frequencies - the results depicted stunning geometrical shapes in the water, dancing and transforming according to the sound frequency it’s exposed to. It’s profound to know that when we experience sound, this incredible physical change is happening throughout our body! When local lady Diana Nash from Sound, Mind, Body contacted us at QueenBee, I jumped at the chance to meet her and find out more about the therapeutic application of sound. I was warmly welcomed into Diana’s specialist room, where singing bowls and gentle vocalisation absorbed me into a relaxed meditative state. Eyes closed, I could feel the sensations of each note vibrating through me, taking me deeper into this wonderful sensory experience. Opening
my eyes at the end of the session was like waking from a deep sleep – I felt a sense of lightness that stuck with me for days afterwards. My energy levels and quality of sleep improved and I also felt some relief from nagging physical symptoms of my recently diagnosed fibromyalgia. I found this experience incredible. So thank you, Diana, for introducing QueenBee to this wonderful therapy. For our readers, can you tell us a little more? Diana: “As human beings, we do not just exist as a physical person - we also have an energetic presence that surrounds and penetrates the physical body and this is called our energy system. The balance and wellbeing of our energy system reflects how we are on a physical level. We all have our own unique frequency, though sometimes we fall out of sync with ourselves through daily life, trauma and stress - we lose our natural melody. Sound healing reconnects us by tuning into the specific frequencies we need. With pure tones created with the voice, instruments, or both, you can be bought back into your own perfect harmonic alignment. I offer a whole variety of treatments and also provide distance healing sessions online - If you want to restore your inner harmony, or see what sound therapy is all about, I welcome you to get in touch!" > Find out more at www.sound-mindandbody.co.uk

adies, it’s the Spring issue – the weight of winter is finally lifting from our bones and the year is slowly warming into itself. As the plants have poked through the surface of the earth, we are reminded how Spring brings with it a sense of rejuvenation and rebirth, for us human beans as well as the world around us!
skills, we’ve realised that the key to a more sustainable, healthy lifestyle is the key to the allotment gates. Saving loooads of money and reducing our household waste significantly, the perks are endless. And importantly for us, we can rest assured that the family are eating wholesome, fresh, pesticide-free food all through the year.
As you’re reading this now, gardeners and allotmenteers all over the country are eagerly busying themselves with the most important time of year – sewing the seeds that will grow to bear the fruits, vegetables and flowers of 2019. It’s a process filled with excitement and anticipation, stirring up a feeling of endless potential... much welcomed after winter hibernation mode!
Also, as well as being a peaceful place to simply enjoy the sunshine and relax the mind, the allotment seems to be the one thing that brings all generations of the family together, active and enjoying time outdoors. That’s something to be cherished.

H O W TO B E G I N A B LO G By Anna Morrish, Quibble Content • quibblecontent.co.uk
B
efore creating a blog it’s important to outline why you want to set one up in the first place. To ensure your blog is read and achieves avid followers you need to find your voice, your reason, passion and drive. Usually bloggers will create content because they have something to say about a particular topic. This could be anything from food and beauty through to political views or wellbeing. Or, it could be that you simply want an outlet and to use your blog as a journal, providing an insight into the joys or trials and tribulations of life. A blog can give others something to aspire to and it can also resonate with them, even provide support and simply show that we’re all human. What’s more, blogging can be quite lucrative if done correctly. If you spend the time to create carefully curated content, your blog views will increase as will your social influence. You can then use this to advertise products and services you’re passionate about and in many cases, businesses will offer you these for free in return for promotion on your blog or social channels.
58
QueenBee Spring 2019
So, here’s how to get started: 1. Pick a name. Write down words that relate to your chosen topic or theme, along with words you want your blog to be known as. 2. Get online. Once you’ve chosen a name for your blog it’s time to buy your domain and choose a content management system (CMS). There are free site builders you can use including squarespace.com and wix.com, although they can have limitations. As such, we recommend 123-reg.co.uk or godaddy. com for domains and hosting, and wordpress.com as your CMS. 3. Create a layout. WordPress has free themes and layouts you can use, but if you want something a little different, try themeforest. net. 4. Write & publish your first post. Once you've received your logins and can access the backend of your site you can edit the various elements, update the theme and layout, upload pictures, add contact, about and legal pages and create your first "Post". 5. Promote it. When your first post is live, share it with friends, family and on your various social media channels. Now your first post is live, create a content strategy and editorial calendar to keep readers engaged and to build your empire! ^

ust last month, the Mum of a 4 year old girl tweeted West Midlands FRS asking for videos or books featuring women firefighters.
The request came because her little girl said she wished she was a boy so she could be a “fireman”. When her Mum replied that she could be a firefighter her daughter replied “but I’ve seen in books - they are all boys and I don’t want to be the only girl.” The response from firefighters around the world, who happen to be women, was huge. From left: Sarah, Gee, Coco, Emma who are all based at fire stations in Peterborough.
In Peterborough alone, there are six women firefighters and 34 across the whole of Cambridgeshire and Peterborough – that’s 7% of our operational workforce. Emma above says: “I love the excitement and unknown. Every day is different, you don’t know what’s going to happen, there is no ‘standard’ day!” ^ > To find out more about becoming a Firefighter in Cambridgeshire Fire and Rescue Service, or to find out about other career opportunities, visit our recruitment pages at www.cambsfire.gov.uk/careers.aspx

My vegan journey I f you’ve been watching the news, you’ll know that veganism is everywhere. From M&S launching 60 vegan products as part of their new Plant Kitchen range to Greggs releasing that controversial vegan sausage roll, we can’t escape it. More people than ever signed up to Veganuary this year, roughly 250,000 with 14,000 signing up on December 27th alone.

Ice cream is another one which is easy to replace; Ben & Jerry’s now have four flavours of dairy free ice cream and Walls Swedish Glace is delicious. Alpro offer dairy free yoghurts as well as more expensive brands such as CoYo or Koko. Cheese is the one thing I’m finding difficult to ditch, nothing has come remotely close to a strong vintage cheddar!
If you’re thinking of giving veganism a I have been a vegetarian for over 10 years. go, try a few different products to find I started with phasing out red meat, then your favourite. It’s not about ditching the chicken and finally fish. My husband was dairy straight away; even just a couple of a fully fledged meat eater when I met him, vegetarian and vegan meals a week will be always choosing a steak whenever we went good for you and also good for the planet ^ out to eat. We’ve been together for 6 years and he’s now also a vegetarian and our two > Read Shannon's blog boys follow the same diet, except when we www.peanutandsprout.co.uk.Find her on eat out where they have the option to have instagram @peanutandsprout meat if they wish. The natural progression now is to veganism and we’ve been dabbling for Vegan product launches almost doubled last year, as more a few months. Milk was the first product we switched. We’ve tried almost every alternative including almond, hazelnut, coconut and oat. We have Oatly delivered once a week from our milkman which reduces our cow’s milk intake, although we still have 2 pints weekly.
UK adults ate vegetarian and meat-free foods, according to new research from Mintel.

ARE YOU SURVIVING OR THRIVING?

e are a nation teetering on the edge of a mental health disaster. Just 13% of people report living with high levels of good mental health. Just imagine if that figure related to our physical health – If only 13% of people reported living with good physical health, what a shocking statistic that would be? People think of people with mental health issues as those on medication to deal with clinical depression, anxiety, bi-polar disorder, eating disorders, or Psychosis. These conditions do affect some people at the extreme end of the scale. More commonly, people experience mental health problems as stress and anxiety, depression, insomnia, low mood, low motivation, OCD, SAD, PN Depression, phobias, panic attacks, PTSD, low self esteem/confidence. A range of symptoms that people put up with without considering them a mental health issue and the impact on us as individuals is that life often ends up being a constant battle to survive each day. We end up surviving and not thriving! We need to thrive! Thriving is “the capacity of each of us to feel, think and act in ways that enhances our ability to enjoy life and deal with the challenges we face.” Thriving isn’t the absence of a mental health problem, it’s really working towards fulfilling our true potential. We seem to be dealing with increasing levels of pressure and expectation in our daily lives, that so often leads to that

overwhelming feeling of “how on earth am I going to cope?”. We can’t change what goes on around us. After all, so much of what impacts on our lives is out of our control. But we can increase our ability to cope, we can increase our resilience to stressful situations so that they don’t lead to mental health issues. When we are suffering from stress, anxiety, depression or any other mental health issue it can feel overwhelming. The idea of overcoming the problem can seem like a massive mountain to climb. But the good news is that many of the things that increase our mental wellbeing are simple and easy to do. The key activities highlighted in the MHF report were spending time with family and friends, spending time on hobbies, going out for a walk, making plans, setting goals and getting a good night’s sleep. Simple activities that make a huge impact on our mental wellbeing. Start thriving, start focusing on taking positive actions and positive interactions! But sometimes we can’t do this by ourselves, sometimes we need help, and this is where hypnotherapy comes in ^ By Gary Johannes AHD DHP HPD MNCH (Reg.) AfSFH (Reg.) A sting in the tail by Tracy Hefferon
H
aving just entered into the last year of my forties, I have begun contemplating the hideous reality that is the much-feared halfcentury milestone. The thing is, I don’t feel fifty. Fifty to me conjures up images of Mad Mrs. Rojo, my white-haired, snaggle-toothed R.E teacher, who used to prance around the classroom in a long, voluminous skirt, ecru tights and shocking pink lipstick, singing ‘I am half a century old’ to nobody in particular. At the time, circa the mid-eighties, I used to stare at her in absolute horror, hoping I would never, ever be as ancient and embarrassing as her. I didn’t want to ever be fifty. But here I am knocking at its door. I think the passing of time really hit home about three weeks ago when Chris Evans was lining up his next tune and made the passing comment ‘I can hardly believe this is thirty years old…’
I listened in disbelief as ‘Back to Life’ by Soul II Soul flooded the airwaves. I got to work and googled ‘Number One Singles 1999’ (mainly because I didn’t believe Chris Evans) but yes… there it was, listed alongside Ride on Time by Black Box, Like A Prayer by Madonna and the bloody Lambada. I descended into a downward spiral of doom as I googled previous years and gasped in dismay as I discovered how old dozens of my favourite records were. I had to stop when I got to Come On Eileen by Dexy’s Midnight Runners. I watched the video on YouTube and sobbed with nostalgia as I remembered dancing to it barefoot in my mate Karen’s garden. We even wore dungarees and tatty neckerchiefs. It was almost as if I’d gone back to 1982. I could almost smell the Anais Anais. It was my twenty-year-old daughter who brought me to my senses. After wailing that ‘I feel like my life is almost over’ the day after my birthday, she quite simply said, ‘there are plenty of people who would have loved to have grown old but never got the chance’. And she’s right. Growing old is a privilege denied to many. Embrace the years! And reminisce to your hearts content! Come on, Eileen, too-rye-ay, come on ^
