QUEENBEE GETS A MAKEOVER! By Kathryn Grace

I

n May, Lorraine and myself got together with the fabulous Alex Agboke for a totally indulgent day of styling and makeovers.

Alex is passionate about fashion and has a real eye for what goes together and what colours suit you best. Circles of Yaxley kindly allowed us to borrow some of their wonderful designer fashion pieces and Sherrie German was on hand with her stunning Stella and Dot jewellery collection. Renee Bridges, a professional make up artist and co-founder of LaPowder Box was in charge of hair and make-up. We were slightly nervous about having our make-up done as we both prefer a natural look, but Renee was

amazing and used just the right amount of products to keep us looking natural but that also worked well under the professional photographers lights too. Plus, she uses Arbonne cruelty-free vegan products, which I love, so that was a huge bonus! Photography was by the talented guys at AVIDD Design who were professional and very patient with us. It was such a fun day and great to get together with such a lovely bunch of professional people. We’d like to say a huge thank you to everyone who helped out ^

Above: Kath wears Vivienne Westwood Denim jacket £45, Marc Aural white linen crop trousers £28 & Lottie & Moll sea green top, £18. Right: Marc Cain orange frill t-shirt £38 & Fat Face denim jeans £20. All by Circles of Yaxley.

SUMMER SWIMMING The beloved Peterborough Lido opened it's doors on 26th May. This year there will be a whole host of new activities on offer, from celebrating Summer Solstice on June 21st to the introduction of early bird morning swims and children’s fun inflatable evenings. Swimming is free for all children under 5 so treat the family to a perfect day out! Find the Lido at Bishops Road, Peterborough, PE1 1YY. Call 01733 864 761 for more info.

Arabellaz in Yaxley have their very own natural skincare range and we’ve been trying some of the products over the last couple of weeks. With simple packaging and affordable prices, all of the products are registered PETA Cruelty Free and are Vegan, so that’s a huge plus point! How female entrepreneurs succeed at networking By Anna Morrish, Director, Quibble Content www.quibblecontent.co.uk

W

omen are still the minority in the business world. So, how can you stand out from the crowd and position yourself as an industry leader when attending networking events? A report from the Institute of Women’s Policy Research shows that women are steadily increasing their presence in the world of small-business ownership. But, how do you succeed at networking? 1) Choose carefully Before joining a group, attend at least once as a guest to get a feel for it and organise oneto-ones with other members to ask them for their thoughts on the group. 2) Be true to who you are People do business with people they know, like and trust. So, be confident and natural. Let people get to know the real you. 3) Be confident in everything you do Your confidence is vital to your success. A study from Stanford GSB suggests that, “...for women to be successful they must simultaneously present themselves as selfconfident and dominant while tempering

10

QueenBee Summer 2018

these qualities with displays of communal characteristics.” 4) Allow your passion to shine through Let your passion and vision shine through, as it will be this that people will buy into. If you’re not invested in the products and services you provide, other’s will struggle to see the value in it too. 5) Position yourself as an industry leader Get involved where possible. Ask to be a guest speaker. This will help you gain authority and respect, along with trust within your chosen group. Be sure to follow up your talk by emailing your presentation out, requesting follow up questions and feedback. And finally... Connect and support other members Attend on a regular basis, organise informal one-to-ones and connect with other members on social media. Offer information, advice and support other members by connecting them with other like-minded people you know to help extend their network. This way you build trust and remain at the forefront of everyone’s mind ^

THE SARCOMA SLAYER By Tracy Hefferon

I

n February of this year, James Willis went to the doctor complaining about a lump on his arm. His doctor didn’t think there was anything to worry about but sent him for tests just to be on the safe side. On Valentine’s Day James was told he had cancer and as he was now presenting more symptoms, further tests were carried out. Results showed the cancer had spread from his arm to his lungs, it was Stage 4 and incurable. James is twenty-nine years old and had been married to Emma for just four months. Going from being a happy-go-lucky newlywed with a great future ahead of him to a man facing the battle of his life is enough to send anyone into a downward spiral. But, despite dark days and a fear of the unknown, James immediately set up a crowdfunding project to raise money for the hospitals treating him, Addenbrookes Oncology and The Royal Orthopaedic Hospital in Birmingham. His friends and family soon got to work donating money, doing sponsored bike rides and head shaves and organising lots of fundraising events for the future. Alongside raising money, James is also passionate about raising awareness of the disease and has urged everybody to get themselves checked out if they have a lump

12

QueenBee Summer 2018

or bump or niggle that is worrying them. Early diagnosis in crucial in beating cancer but all too many of us put off getting these things checked for fear of ‘wasting the GP’s time’. James has undergone three rounds of chemotherapy but as it was a trial drug there was always a chance it wouldn’t work. He has now started a more aggressive form of chemotherapy in a bid to shrink the tumours in his lungs enough for them to be surgically removed. The tumour on his arm will then be removed and he will be in remission. It’s a long road ahead but James is facing it head on, full of hope and positivity, spending time focusing on the here and now, eating well, relaxing, enjoying life… simple things in life he said he never truly appreciated until his diagnosis. His Just Giving page has so far raised over £20,000 for his chosen hospitals but he would love that figure to go even higher. The NHS is one of the things that makes this country great but it needs our help, just as it helps us when we need it, no questions asked ^ > If you would like to make a donation to this worthy cause and follow James’ progress, please visit www.justgiving.com/crowdfunding/ james-thesarcomaslayer-willis

THE FACE BEHIND THE BRAND MEET SUE BRIGHTALL FROM CIRCLES FASHION AGENCY IN YAXLEY

I

almost fell into the fashion world by accident, explains Sue. It was the 1970s and leather and sheepskin coats were all the rage, so I used to have a stand at the local American Air Bases and at the Burghley Horse Trails.

They were extremely popular for a good while and I enjoyed selling them. After they fell out of vogue, I decided to set up a dress agency and...voila, Circles was born! At first I was based in a small shop on Main Street in Yaxley, but I outgrew that quite quickly, so when the old Chapel up the road became available my husband Jim and I went to see it. It was love at first sight, and I still love it every morning when I walk through the door some 25 years later. Everyone that comes to Circles describes it as an Aladdin’s Cave, and I think they are right. We are packed with amazing designer fashions at the fraction of the cost. We have everything from Jimmy Choo to Gucci and we also stock some quality High Street pieces too. I still get a buzz when 16

QueenBee Summer 2018

my clients come in with their unwanted pieces each season… you never know what you are going to get. Quite often, items barely touch the shelves before they are snapped up again and on their way to a new home. That’s the thing with buying preloved, you’ve got to be quick or its gone! My favourite thing about owning my own business is meeting such wonderful ladies every day. And the hardest part? Not buying all the stock myself! ^ > Find us t Chapel Studio, Chapel Street, Yaxley, Peterborough PE7 3LN www.circlesofyaxley.com Come and browse! TEAR TROUGH FILLERS refreshes and rejuvenates tired eyes Dark circles and hollowing under the eyes is a giveaway of age and can make you look as if you’ve been up all night.

BEFORE

AFTER

Because of the sagging and shrinking of the delicate skin around the tear trough, it causes eye bags and dark shadows, which is hard to conceal with makeup. Smoothing those shadows and eye bags will help you look as if you’ve had a good night’s sleep, every night! Tear trough filler can give you an instant result as the dark shadows get ‘plumped out’ for a naturally renewed, rejuvenated face and a far more ‘awake’ look. Dr Beverley Brabbins of Newborough Cosmetic Skin Clinic in Peterborough offers this amazing treatment - the simple procedure that refreshes and rejuvenates tired eyes.

Q

ueenBee asks 3 local hair salon owners what’s hot for Summer hair trends... > Donna Young, LOCKS AND SHADES, Yaxley T: 01733 242472 www.locksandshades.co.uk

The summers hot colour trend is going to be yellow! Similar to the grey trend a few years ago, this look is very hard to achieve and can only really be achieved on very light blonde hair. If that is a little bit too daring for you, why not warm up the tones in your hair instead, and try out some of the beautiful sandy, caramel and apricot blondes that have been proving a popular favourite in the salon? Curls are back, and I definitely don’t mean perms!! The tight corkscrew look is going to be a big look, especially for festival-goers, so if you haven’t already invested in a corkscrew wand (a very small wand that is as thin as a pencil) get one now! Beware though… this look might take you a few hours to create! If that sounds too much like hard work, why not book into our Locks and Shades blow-dry bar and achieve the look hassle free!

> Catherine Miller, MILLIE & CO Hampton Hargate T: 01733 344900 We are excited to tell you all about the brand new Botanea natural hair colour by L’ORÉAL Professional. Botanea is a 100% Herbal Professional Hair Colour which is composed of 3 herbal ingredients... Indigo: Its leaves contain dyes that deliver colour results varying from blue to purple, ideal to brown or dark bases, in combination with henna. Henna: Its leaves release warm copper dyes ideal for preparing blonde, copper of brown shades. Cassia: Grown in several regions of India, and was selected by L’Oréal Research to be used by colourists as an adjuster and luminizer. Absolutely gorgeous natural hair colour. Want to try it? Coming soon to Millie & Co! ^

> Lesley Hirniak, HOUSE OF HAIR AND BEAUTY, Stanground T: 01733 311001 www.houseofhairandbeauty.net Rose gold is still very much on trend this year! It is perfect for blondes who are looking for something different without the commitment. It fades quickly and still looks beautiful through each stage. To achieve this rose gold the hair has to be lightended to blonde. If you decide to blonde or rose gold for this summer it is important to look after your hair in the process. Lightening hair is one of the most damaging services we can do the hair so looking after the hair is so important. Matrix have brought out products to keep the hair healthy during and after lighting hair including a new range of products called ‘the re-bond’. These products are to be used in salon and to be used as aftercare. It is a threestep routine that helps fortify weakend, overprocessed hair. Hair is left revitalised with strength and smoothness. Improves every strand while maintaining hairs resiliance ^

How to prepare an engaging business presentation By Anna Morrish, Director, Quibble Content www.quibblecontent.co.uk

L

ast month I conducted four talks. It was a busy month! Each of the talks I presented had different themes and were for different audiences.

So, how do you choose an engaging topic to present and how do tailor the content to the audience? Know your audience It’s easier said than done. But, do as much research as possible. If you’re doing a talk for an established event or group, ask the organiser some questions: •W hat topics have guests expressed an interest in? •W hat’s the size of the businesses in attendance? • Who will be in attendance? The more information, the better, as it’ll allow you to talk about specific industries that are relevant to people in the room, in which case they’ll relate much better and be more engaged. If you’re conducting an independent talk, or the event organisers can’t provide you with the information you need, there’s still ways to find out about your audience. Look on social media and check hashtags to find out the following:

22

QueenBee Summer 2018

•T he main questions people are asking about topics relevant to you. • What worked well for your competitors. •W ho has publicly said they’re going to attend your talk. Choose your questions wisely If you have a medium sized audience, ask what they hope to achieve by attending. Note each point on a white board and cover each point as part of your talk. You can readdress each of these points at the end of the presentation to highlight the value you’ve provided. To encourage engagement during your talk you’ll likely want to ask questions. But, know your audience. It often takes a while for an audience to warm up. Therefore, asking open questions can often result in… Silence To encourage engagement, ask for a show of hands. If no one raises their hands, call them out. Make light of it. And then, move on. And finally… At the end of your talk, relate back to your talk and ask if there are any points on X, Y or Z to guide your audience ^

How I make it work

A

lex Agboke is a busy wife, mum of four and a personal stylist - passionate about helping women create a wardrobe they love. In 2016 she launched StylePeg - a styling company for the modern busy woman to help them do just that. We caught up with the Mumpreneur to find out more about how she make’s it all work.

QA QB What made you decide to set up Stylepeg? Alex I was a professional actress and singer before I had my family. Working in the West End or touring is not really conducive to family life, so I knew I would need to change directions if I wanted to continuing working creatively. I was introduced to colour analysis by an artist friend and it completely revolutionised the way I looked at myself and my wardrobe - I thought “wow - this is a powerful tool” and knew I wanted to share that with as many people as possible. QB What was the most difficult aspect of setting up your business? Alex The most difficult aspect has been “marketing” 24

QueenBee Summer 2018

what I do and the benefits of it. I don’t think women always understand the benefits fully and therefore don’t commit to investing in themselves in this way. So many clients afterwards have said they wished they had done it much much sooner as they realise how much time, money (and pain) they could have saved. QB You have four children so you could be classed as a Mumpreneur.. how do you balance work and family life. Alex Ooh it is a hard one.. especially as I homeschool too. But as the saying goes “If you want something done give it to a busy person” I work most evenings because a lot of my work is compiling Style reports or online shopping for clients. I have good babysitters too who can supervise the children and their school work when I’m working away. It’s also something I want to introduce them

to. My eldest daughter is 12. She is very creative and loves photography. At a recent shoot she stayed on set with us helping out and being a general runner. I think this is great experience for her and hopefully something that will build her confidence and talent. QB What are your future plans for StylePeg? Alex Well, I’ve just teamed up with a fabulous make-up artist (Renee Bridges of La Powder Box) and photographer to provide a service for businesses and professionals who need to upgrade their visual branding and I’ll be launching my Style Podcast this summer too which I’m really excited about ^ > stylepeg.com

QueenBeefashion

QueenBee with Alexandra Agboke

Alex Agboke is QueenBee’s self-styled fashion agony aunt - she can answer all of your questions and offer top notch advice. So ask away... she’s here to help! Hi Alex, I always struggle with being office smart in hot weather, on a budget. We only get a few months at best, so I always tend to invest in autumn / winter / spring clothes. Summer workwear tends to get overlooked... I guess ‘cos we’re never quiet sure if we’re going to get hot weather until it arrives, and then it’s a bit of a panic / make do situation. Any tips along this line would be fab. Lulu Alex This is a great question Lulu! In hotter climates it really is all about the fabric... polyester is too hot, however cotton is not the most stylish option for the office. Not so long ago linen was an undesirable option designated to certain sections of M&S and retirees who holiday abroad. But maybe we have now cottened on (pardon the pun) to it’s practicality as linen is absolutely on-trend this season in a modern, chic and colourful way. From skirts to jumpsuits, it’s everywhere - and it looks good. Linen is highly absorbent and will quickly remove perspiration from the skin so no hidden sweaty trickles. The downside, of course, is that it does crease more easily not ideal for your average train commuter

however, having just purchased a linen suit myself I can honestly say that I don’t care it’s part of the look! Another great fabric to look out for this summer is Lyocell. Made using sustainable wood pulp, it’s biodegradable, amazingly soft and 50% more breathable than cotton. It can also be dyed to a higher quality than linen. Lyocell feels more like silk and polyester, so perfect if you like a more luxurious look. My advice is to look at fabric labels as you curate your wardrobe this summer and perhaps spend a little more on a couple of items that will serve you well this season. After all, you are not likely to overwear them due to the unpredictable nature of our weather system! > Have you got a fashion dilemma or question? O

ne of the many things I love about Summer is being able to go outside and explore. Peterborough has so many opportunities for families and we are lucky to have these on our doorstep! From the Lido, Flag Fen to Nene Park. We spend a lot of time outdoors and enjoying the many events that are happening across the city over the summer! Here are two of our personal favourites. Open Farm Sunday - on 9th and 10th June at MHS Farms Ltd open the doors of their working farm to families. It is a great way for children to learn about farming and where our food comes from. It is FREE to enter and there is lots to do, such as meet the animals, hosted farm tour, tractor and trailer rides, PYO potatoes (subject to weather) plus plenty of hands on activities and local produce to buy. Find them at 7 Park Farm Sand Pit Road, Thorney, PE6 0SY.

Peterborough Heritage Weekend is a free event hosted by Vivacity at Cathedral Square, Peterborough. It’s on 16th - 17th June and is FREE with over 300 re-enactors and over 3,000 years of history... it’s worth a visit! ^ > There is so much more happening so make sure to check out my blog www.TheMumDiaries.co.uk for what’s on activities for the summer holidays.

Listen to your body... LOCAL LADY NAZLEEN REED TELLS QUEENBEE ABOUT HER BUSINESS - ULTIMATE PERFORMANCE LIFESTYLE

I

have been working as a physiotherapist since qualifying in 2008 and have spent most of my career consulting private patients with musculoskeletal problems.

These can include the lower and upper back, shoulder and neck pain and sports injuries. The majority of patients I see and treat for mechanical problems are due to poor posture and imbalances in the body. Upper back and shoulder complaints are seen frequently in women due to sedentary work. When sitting for a long period of time, the upper back is stationary and can cause restriction in the neck and thoracic spine region. Overloading the upper back can also cause imbalances in muscles which in turn produces back, neck and shoulder pain. Once a full assessment is completed, theses imbalances and spinal restrictions can be identified and treatment can commence. Physiotherapy Treatment alone will alleviate the pain but if these imbalances are not corrected, they will reoccur ^

> If you would like more information on this topic or wish to attend a pilates and / or yoga session, then please email: contact@upl.life or call 01733 235226. Visit our website: www.upll.co.uk

36

QueenBee Summer 2018

Here’s some simple advice to help retain good posture and prevent imbalances with sitting.

1

Do not sit at your desk for longer than 30 minutes. Get up and move around, even if it’s walking to the other side of the room, touching the wall and returning to your desk.

2

Get an ergonomic assessment at your desk. This ensures you have good posture when sitting and aren’t over-straining muscles.

3

Good ergonomic position is crucial with laptops & iPads as we tend to use these when we are mobile and not at our desks. Use a separate mouse, raise the laptop to eye level and limit time spent on these devices.

4

Do some upper back and neck stretches daily to maintain flexibility.

5

Strengthen your neck and upper back muscles. Pilates and Yoga will help with flexibility, strength and posture. If you suffer from back, shoulder and / or neck pain, then incorporating these classes alongside your other exercise routines will not only help prevent injury and correct posture but they will also help improve your running, cycling, dancing and walking ability too.

hen it comes to looking for a recommended and reliable tradesperson – there is one city business that has been championing consumers for a decade. For the past 10 years, the Safe Local Trades online service has been providing thousands of customers within the PE area with easy access to reliable and reputable tradesmen. And in a double celebration, Safe Local Trades director Eileen Le Voi has launched a sister company – Safe Local Services; which received its official unveiling at a recent special celebration for SLT / SLS members, attended by Peterborough Mayor, Cllr John Fox. Consumer confidence and working tirelessly to force out rogue and cowboy traders across the Peterborough area, Safe Local Trades and its director Eileen Le Voi have received a number of awards for the communityfocussed service.

Building on the huge success of Safe Local Trades; which has attracted nearly 13,000 positive reviews, Safe Local Services offers recommended services from accountants to numerous business support providers, through to tattoo artists, dentists, beauty therapists and much more. “The aim is again to provide consumers with professionals by offering peace of mind when instructing a service. “Each service has been vetted, have their own profile and a chance for consumers to leave their own feedback and reviews. We have found over the past ten years that consumers trust our recommendations. “However, the benefit is two-fold, as professionals becoming a member of Safe Local Services will benefit from an already trusted and highly respected service - as well as a reputable brand name. Gaining the Safe Local Services seal of approval will provide instant consumer confidence and trust and ultimately win more business.” ^ Editors note: Look out in our next issue of QueenBee for our ‘PINK PAGE’ featuring selected trusted traders for our readers!

Its that time of year again!

Anxiety. What to look out for: • Excessive distress or worrying about everyday things. • Disproportionate reactions to situations. • Inability to control worrying. • Trouble with sleeping. • Difficulty in concentration. • Head, stomach or muscle aches.

C

hildhood summers are usually portrayed as a carefree time, without worries or responsibilities, however in reality it can be quite different. With GCSE’s, mocks and SATS all taking place, the demands and pressures on our young people can become totally overwhelming and lead to periods of anxiety and even depression.

Academic stress and the nature of competitive schooling is an unavoidable part of growing up in modern Britain, and can leave children feeling frustrated and increasingly anxious about meeting targets and satisfying their parents or teachers. However, there are ways to manage any pressures your child may be feeling ^ > YPCS offers free support for 11-16 year olds in the Peterborough area. We are a local professional counselling service that is free and accessible. Please get in touch if you need advice or support on 0800 634 4395.

• Fatigue. • Profuse sweating. • Frequent need to urinate. • Feeling shaky or twitchy.

How you can help: • Have an open dialogue. Listen. • Make sure that there are realistic expectations about what they can achieve or of what is expected. • Take time to discuss and nurture their strengths. • Provide opportunities to relive stress and promote relaxation. This could be as simple as going for a walk together, having a friend over, popping out for lunch, going for a swim, watching a movie..anything that involves a way to switch off. • Reassure them that it is normal to feel anxious and explain what anxiety is. • Communicate with your child’s school so that they are aware and can be more sensitive with their approach in dealing with your child. • Take time to explore study or revision tips together.

LIZZIE BENTON OFFERS ADVICE & GUIDANCE ABOUT REAL LIFE ISSUES

Q: I’M GETTING UNWANTED ATTENTION FROM A MALE FRIEND. HOW DO I EASE IT OFF? Unfortunately, in our lives there are incidences whereby being nice to people can lead to unsolicited attention. This doesn’t mean you’ve done anything wrong, so first of all, do not blame yourself for this reaction. There are some people who have led such difficult lives with negative people, that they believe when some is being nice to them it must mean love. I can imagine you’re feeling really stuck about what to do, as the biggest thing with these situations is you don’t want to hurt anyone or lose a friend. However, as the lines become blurred it’s important that you begin to step back before you get put into an uncomfortable position. As awkward as it may feel, the best thing to do is to call them out on this behaviour. Yes, it definitely takes some strength but you have to if you want to maintain the

friendship and find out if they wish to continue being just a friend. If they’re a true friend they will apologise and you’ll both be laughing about the situation in years to come. If they were seeking something else, question what gave them this idea because it may be a deeper problem for them that they need to resolve with a therapist. Otherwise, it’s best to begin letting them go gently. Don’t reply to his messages and keep a little distance to try and cool things off. Talk to another friend about it who you can trust to give you some impartial advice, and if you ever feel unsafe about their behaviour towards you ensure to report it to someone before it becomes anything sinister. Don’t let this deter you from continuing to be a nice person, be respectful and open to what he has to say. lizaboo.co.uk ^

Sports and Remedial massage therapy... WE TALK TO LOCAL LADY, SHARON SMITH ABOUT HER SPORTS & REMEDIAL MASSAGE THERAPY BUSINESS

S

haron qualified thirty years ago after a two-year full diploma in Beauty Therapy. After excelling in body treatments and exercise therapy with distinctions, she went on to to develop those skills further. When she met her partner she got into cycling and running in a big way and went on to study and qualify in sports massage, sports nutrition and coaching. When she moved to Newborough she set up her own treatment room and hasn’t looked back. ‘I love learning and understanding how our body works. How our brain and the links between stress and our emotions can affect our physiology, so I’m also halfway through a psychology and sports psychology degree.’ Sharon comes highly recommended for her calm, understanding approach and ability to tailor treatment to the personal needs of her clients. ‘Someone suffering from tension in the neck and shoulders needs a calming restorative approach to soothe the nerves and release tension. Whereas someone having sports remedial work needs a deep tissue massage, with strong stretches to promote healthy muscle tissue and prevent injuries.

48

QueenBee Summer 2018

Massage is no longer the basic treatment it once was. It has now been scientifically proven to have many health benefits from stress relief to boosting the immune system. In my thirty years of practise, I have seen huge leaps forward in our understanding of the body’s physiology and I have tailored my treatments to reflect this. My initial consultation helps me learn about you and your personal issue or injury. Treatment is then specific to your needs and your appointment is always finished off with advice on self-treatment stretches or exercises to help you heal your condition’. > All of this from just £28 for a 40 min treatment if you book four visits or £30 for a one-off. id you all enjoy summer this year? Those glorious few days we had in mid-April?! If you don't trust the UK weather then I have some ideas for summer breaks, where the sun will almost certainly shine.

Sarah Hounsell is your very own Personal Travel Consultant with years of experience. Working on your behalf, she can find, plan & tailor make the most perfect holiday for you.

QueenBee Summer 2018

I am now six months into running my own business, having left the relative security of a high street travel agent – a daunting move for anybody. Reflecting on this first six months, I don't think I could have asked for it to go better. A few hiccups along the way such as time spent learning new systems, but I have the perfect combination of being my own boss coupled with having the backing of Hays Travel who have proved to be a wonderful partner. I have also been blessed with the support of family and friends and (so important for any business!) wonderful customers, both old and new. The range of holidays that I have access to through Hays outweighs anything I had previously, which enables me to deliver the holiday of your dreams. From Benidorm to Bali, Florence to Florida, Mallorca to Mauritius; if you’re not following my Facebook page already, please do and you will see all of my latest offers. Those offers are just a snapshot of what I can do. If you have an idea in mind that you need pulling together, give me a call and I can turn it into reality. So, the snow has melted away and the sun has started to shine and we are starting to focus on our tans, rest and relaxation with a holiday to somewhere nice and hot where the weather is reliable. But where are you going? If you’ve not booked yet, there’s still time and plenty out there to chose from. Turkey has got to be the number one spot for an all-inclusive deal this year followed by the Spanish islands. The appeal of the isles is the short flight and transfer times however

QueenBeetravel DO’S Portugal is missing out and I feel it’s down to some of the prices that are being charged this year.

• Take the time to choose your destination carefully. It has to have something for everyone in your party.

Prices have increased if you are traveling anywhere west of the UK hence why so many are flocking to Turkey or Egypt where the heat is in the high 30s and there are plenty of beaches and pool activities. Most of the hotels have a waterslide or two; some even boast a full on water park.

• Look on Trip Advisor at the same period for last year and see if anyone has any tips or comments about the hotel.

Maybe you’re thinking of longer haul destinations? I’ve seen prices for the Caribbean (especially Cuba and Mexico) at similar prices to those in Europe and with all the diverse culture and the beautiful beaches and sea, why wouldn’t you go that bit further to sample something completely different? The Indian Ocean has been a top seller for me this year with people finding some fab prices for Mauritius. With direct flights on a Dreamliner, you can visit Chamarel waterfall, Seven Coloured Earths or Montello Tower with maybe a walk with lions and a volcano thrown in! Mauritians drive on the left, as we do, so it’s easy to see lots of sights in a day. Snorkelling is also a main attraction due to the huge variety of tropical fish you can see in the clear turquoise waters. So with more and more people looking at holidays, here are my do's and dont's for this time of year.

• Make sure you’ve got transfers and luggage included in your price. You won’t believe how many people don’t think of this and certain airlines can charge up to £80 per bag on top of the holiday cost. • Make sure you have boarding passes printed off if you have been told to (again low cost airlines can charge an additional £75 per boarding pass at the airport)! • Look at the tour operator online and their reviews. DO THEY REALLY EXIST? Check if you need visas or vaccinations for the destination. It may be a late deal and you won’t have time for the vaccinations required. DON’TS • Don’t book with just anyone online (any reputable tour operator will give you an ATOL certificate within 24 hours of booking). • Don’t book something that looks too good to be true – it usually is – and you could lose all your money online. • Don’t leave it until the last minute and think you’ll get a bargain. A general rule for August holidays is that they go UP in price closer to departure date, NOT down. • Don’t find something perfect for you and sleep on it thinking it will still be there tomorrow… it probably won’t be. • Don’t forget to take out holiday insurance. Travel agents used to be expensive compared to online deals but they are very competitive at the moment ^ > Let Sarah create your dream holiday - call her on 01733 646316. QueenBee Summer 2018

THE NON-SURGICAL

BRAZILIAN

BOOTY

LIFT By Lucy Dean

T

54

he Brazilian Booty Life (or BBL) is quickly becoming one of the ‘trendiest’ procedures this year. Are you envious of the Kardashian’s derrieres? Well now you can get your own booty lifted at Bella Mia!

Only Way Is Essex. Chloe Sims and Lauren Goodger have collectively spent thousands of pounds on getting their bum lifted (the surgical way) and the great thing about Bella Mia’s treatment is that because it doesn’t require invasive surgery, it’s very affordable.

Bella Mia is a hair and beauty salon located in Cardea and as of June, they’ll be offering a completely painless, nonsurgical form of the Brazilian Booty Lift.

Typically, you’d need about 5 treatments once a week and maintenance treatments every 4-10 weeks thereafter to receive the best results.

The Booty Lift is designed to break down ‘unwanted’ fat cells and replacing them into the buttock area, ultimately improving the look of your skin which will result in less cellulite and a perkier booty! The best bit is, is with a bit of maintenance every now and again, the results can be permanent.

If you’ve got other problem areas, the Lymphatic Drainage Machine can get to work on those parts of your body too – most commonly the stomach, arms and legs – and reduce the look of cellulite whilst firming the skin at the same time ^

This procedure has been used by celebrities up and down the country – especially with the girls from The

Here we tell you about some of their body treatments: Radio Frequency Cellulite Treatment Radio frequency treatments can be used to treat excess pockets of fat on the stomach, hips and thighs, reduce cellulite and tighten saggy skin caused by weight loss or pregnancy. The treatment is very safe and has minimal down time. The treatment involves the use of a radio frequency 56

energy device to heat up and tighten tissue to boost blood flow and break down cellulite and fat. The radio frequency energy heats the skin without damaging it in order to break down fatty cells and stimulate collagen production, which improves skin tone and elasticity. Ultra Sonic Fat Reduction Do you want to reduce fat? Do you want a smaller, more defined waist or slimmer thighs? Ultrasound cavitation is a 3D liposuction treatment that eliminates fat cells from the body safely, efficiently and non-invasively. Arabellaz use targeted ultrasonic waves to destroy fat cells without harming any other cells in your body. You will see an immediate change in your appearance after your first session, with optimum results after 6 to 12 sessions depending on the area being treated. Skinny Tan Skinny tan is the first spray tan that combines natural smoothing ingredients to tan, contour and reduce the visible appearance of cellulite! Paraben-free, sulfate-free, always 100% streak free and no animal testing, you can choose a full or just a half body tan (if you are just showing off your legs!) ^ > Visit www.arabellaz.com for a full list of their treatments and enjoy your hairfree, toned and tanned Summer ladies!

ome of us might try a new product once a month. For some of us it’s once in a blue moon. But our Lorraine is in a league all of her own. If it’s new, she has to have it. From creams to scrubs, masks to mascara, she tries the lot. Her bathroom is like walking into a miniature Boots.

This new regular feature will showcase Lorraine’s top beauty buys and this season’s must-have products. Tried and tested right here at your fingertips!

‘Ever since I was a child I have been into health and beauty products. My first memory was when I was about eight-years-old and going to my school’s summer fete. I bought two items – a glorious book on Hollywood female icons (which I really wish I’d kept!) and a large make-up palette full of different coloured foundations, eyeshadows and lipsticks. It had obviously been used but I didn’t care. 58

QueenBee Summer 2018

My obsession definitely doesn’t come from my mother seeing as she only wears a dab of lippy on special occasions! It’s from my grandma who was very glamorous in her younger days and I remember spending many a happy hour sat at her huge dressing table, playing with her compact powders and lipsticks. Working in publishing, I am surrounded by new products – what they do for you, what’s in and what’s out. If it tells me it works or someone famous swears by it then I’m there at the counter filling my boots!

I love romantic walks... down the beauty aisle!

ALL IMPORTANT SLEEP

S

Women are twice as likely to suffer with insomnia than men, mainly due to hormonal differences, but also because of the role women have had - the caregiver! Luckily, for many women, this element is changing.

What happens to your body if you don’t sleep 7 hours or more?

Imaging if you were having deprived sleep for weeks or months? What would your immune system, your heart and memory be like?

•L earning and memory is inhibited (the allnighter does damage to learning and recall).

TIPS FOR BETTER SLEEP:

leep is the most important element of health and wellbeing; that’s even ahead of fitness and nutrition.

•L ack of sleep increases the chances of Demetria and Alzheimer (sleeping pills won’t help). •L ack of sleep stimulates and aggravates the fight or flight region of the brain by up to 60%. We are now finding links between sleep disruptions and conditions such as depression, anxiety, PTSD, schizophrenia and tragically, suicide. In fact, there seems to be no psychiatric condition where sleep is normal. •L ack of sleep affects the immune system, increasing chances of chronic illnesses like cancer. One night of only 4 hours sleep could reduce decease fighting cells by 70%. •D ay light savings; in Spring, across Europe when we lose an hour, we see a 24% increase in heart attacks. In the Autumn, we see a 21% decrease. •L ack of sleep is a critical cause of weight gain and obesity. •L ack of sleep is the biggest cause of teen/20s road deaths, sleeping one hour more reduced this by 70% - ABS brakes only reduced it by 25%. 62

QueenBee Summer 2018

• Switch off! Blue light from your mobile phone or tablet supresses production of a hormone called melatonin which tells our brain it’s ready to switch off and go to sleep. • Try and do something relaxing in that last hour before bed. Read a book, drink a chamomile tea or do some yoga specially designed for bedtime. • Have a routine. Our brain loves routines as it helps it to know what’s coming next. Have the same bedtime routine most nights - it will trigger your brain to go to sleep. • Have some hypnotherapy! Just 20 minutes of hypnotherapy is the equivalent of 4 hours sleep. This gives your brain plenty of processing time, but not at the expense of your restorative sleep, helping you avoid those issues above. > If you are struggling to get a good night’s sleep then perhaps it’s time to get in touch to book your FREE initial consultation. GRIEVING GRANDPARENTS

G

randparents can often be collateral casualties from ongoing hostility between separated parents. Suddenly, barriers are put up preventing them from enjoying the close and loving relationship they and the children have been used to if the parent with care decides that he or she (unfortunately, usually a she) want a complete break not only from the ex-spouse but also the extended family. Sometimes contact isn’t stopped altogether but just made really difficult to arrange, or severely limited. Disputes within a family can also cause the younger generation to punish the older generation by stopping contact with grandchildren. Grandparents’ rights to access have existed under the Children Act 1989 for many decades.

You have to satisfy the court that there is a strong connection with your grandchildren, but that is usually a hurdle easily overcome. Then you make an application for a Child Arrangements Order in the same way as a separated parent. The court will assume that it is beneficial for children to maintain contact with their grandparents unless there are strong reasons to the contrary. Dame Esther Rantzen, who calls this situation “a living bereavement”, has been leading a campaign to amend the Children Act and create a presumption in favour of grandparents having contact, rather than having to jump through legal hoops to secure that right. This month Government Ministers have promised to consider such changes and also include other extended family members, such as uncles and aunts,

when children’s parents separate or divorce. As with all legislation this is likely to be a slow process but bear in mind if you know somebody with this problem, grandparental rights already exist. Consult your local family specialist for more information ^ Belinda Smith is the owner and principal of Belinda Smith and Co., Family Law solicitors based at Asset House, 27-28 Thorpe Wood, Peterborough, PE3 6SR www.bscosolicitors.co.uk

A sting in the tail (or should that be Lady Garden…?) by Tracy Hefferon

I

had a bit of a shock two weeks ago. I went to the doctor for a problem with the old Lady Garden, only to be told ‘it’s quite normal, you daft bat, you’re post-menopausal’. My brain had to quickly go through the words peri-menopausal, menopausal and post-menopausal to confirm that post-menopausal actually meant I’d gone through it and come out the other end. Done and dusted. Without even knowing. And… I was still alive. Having heard and read so many horror stories over the years about what to expect

during the menopause, I was dreading the ceasing of menstruation so much, I had considered gender reassignment to dodge the whole sorry situation. I even went on one of those Facebook apps where you download a photo of yourself and after five seconds another photo miraculously appears alongside you as a woman, of you as a man. I looked quite handsome, actually, and I decided if I had been born with dangly bits, my name would be Trevor. To my relief, I didn’t have to sit down with my children and tell them their mum was going to shortly become another dad. I’d gone through the menopause and survived. I thought back over the previous few years and acknowledged that there had been some tell-tale signs it was underway. Anxiety, bouts of tearfulness, thickening around the middle, spots, an inability to lose even an ounce of weight – even on Slimfast – and developing a skill of snapping randomly at anyone about anything. But there were no hot flushes. No insomnia. No committing murder. Just vague niggles that to be honest, I usually put down to excessive wine consumption. I asked my mum what her menopause was like. She said she never really had one. She then said her sister never really had one either. And neither did my grandmother. Eventually I decided this ghost menopause phenomena was down to having French genes. Oh and the notion that maybe there is something in all that red wine after all… ^
