ON TREND BATHROOMS & WETROOMS
Q
ueenBee spoke to Darren Green, owner of Attica Bespoke to talk about 2019 trends and what’s hot in bathrooms and wetrooms. "We have a lot going on this year. Manufacturers are going above and beyond, pushing boundaries in design and using unique materials. There is a lot of choice when renovating your space. Styles and trends are fluid and can merge. We just have to find out what drives us individually and what compliments the space we are working with. Light plays a big part in this, whether using artificial light such as led strip light, spot lights or using as much natural light as possible to create a beautiful space to enjoy that is of course functional. We continue to shift towards subtle lines and curves and away from angular rigid styles.

chalky whites, really works. If your rolling with grey. The lighter the better, creating a light space from cement style tiles or micro cement. Brass or black fittings with an Areca palm plant to keep it natural. Woods are winning. Natural grains and knots making your space feel warm and welcoming. Whether as feature tiles or flooring, combine with soft white tiles to contrast. Include staggered or a single oak shelf. Whatever your space or style be sure to choose the right company or tradesmen to complete your project. Attica Bespoke design and install all elements to produce stunning bathrooms and wetrooms using the best materials.
The use of brushed metals for taps, showers and accessories as brass, rose gold and black. These add a unique and high end element to any space.
We also include a 5 year warranty for all our projects for your peace of mind" ^
Go bold or go home with feature tiles. Blues, pinks and greens in beautiful eclectic designs. It may seem daring but when coupled with

Rutland ...much in little…
England’s smallest county – roughly 16 miles wide by 16 miles long – Rutland lives up to its Latin motto Multum in Parvo, or ‘much in little.’
I
ts rolling hills are home to historic castles, palaces and halls, quaint market towns and picturesque farms, lakes and parkland, which is why visitors to the rural idyll offered by the tiny county of Rutland come back year and year. Here’s just a taste of what it has to offer… Oakham Castle The 12th century Oakham Castle in Rutland has had a recent £2m renovation, and the castle (which is actually a Great Hall) houses the county’s historic horseshoe collection. For the past 500 years it’s been customary for peers of the realm to give a horseshoe to the Lord of the Manor as they pass through the town for the first time. More than 200 horseshoes are displayed in the castle, the oldest of which was given by King Edward IV in the 1400s (find out more at www.rutland.gov.uk/oakham_castle.aspx) Let the good times roll Cycling groups will love the off-road paths and trails that circle Britain’s largest man-made lake, Rutland Water, which is close to the town of Oakham and 25 miles around its perimeter (find out more at www.rutlandwater.org.uk).
Built in the 1970s, Rutland Water’s a drinking water reservoir that’s now home to a wetland nature reserve, managed by Leicestershire and Rutland Wildlife Trust. Visitors can bike, walk or sail, and the attraction’s popular with bird watchers, too. In fact, every August the attraction hosts the British Birdfair. This year’s event runs from August 16-18, with free parking and a free courtesy bus from Oakham train station to the Birdfair site at Egleton (find out more www.birdfair.org.uk) Celebrating the area’s heritage Rutland is no slouch in the history stakes, and is home to Lyddington Bede House. Having started life in medieval times as the wing of a palace belonging to the Bishops of Lincoln, by 1600 it had passed to Sir Thomas Cecil, son of Queen Elizabeth’s chief minister. He converted it into an almshouse for the poor, and today visitors can wander through their rooms – the highlight for many being the former bishops’ Great Chamber on the first floor, with its carved ceiling cornice (find out more at www.english-heritage.org.uk) ^ Photo credit Visit England

Summer loving by Lexie Wrightson
T
he wheel of the year has turned yet again, from the new life zest of Summer into the full bloom of the summer as the sun reaches the climax of the solar year on 21st June. Our gardens are blooming, there is new life from the Summer lambs and songbirds and summer is in full swing. Its time to fire up the barbeque and enjoy the celebrations of Midsummer. Also called Litha, the Summer Solstice honours the longest day and the shortest night of the year.
This is a time of joyful celebration, to gather with loved ones and enjoy the life affirming energy of the sun at its peak. The summer solstice was famously marked at Stonehenge by pagans thousands of years ago, as the rising sun only reaches the centre of the stone circle on one day of the year. Many still visit each year to watch the sunrise. Ways to celebrate midsummer: • Journal the year so far, how well has it gone? What goals have you achieved? What is still to achieve and needs more attention to bring it to fruition? What changes do you need to make? 10
QueenBee Summer 2019
• Spend as much time as you can outside and take advantage of the extra hours of daylight • Gather with friends for an al-fresco meal together • Practice yoga, 21st June is also International yoga day. Look out for studios offering free classes to celebrate. • Go to the seaside, pack a picnic for a long lazy day on the beach. • Go into the countryside and enjoy the wonders of mother nature at her peak, take time to listen to her sounds and find a few moments of stillness. Yet within this climax is the whisper and promise of a return to the Dark. As the Light reaches its peak so this is also the moment when the power of the Sun begins to wane. From now on the days grow shorter and the nights grow longer and we are drawn back into the Dark to complete the Wheel of the Year ^ > Contact Lexie on 07915078843 or email abwrightson@hotmail.co.uk www.lexiewrightson.com

MICHELLE ABBOTT, OUR REGULAR STYLE CONTRIBUTOR TALKS ABOUT THAT WARDROBE STAPLE - THE DENIM JACKET
I
bet if you look in your wardrobe you’ll own one, it might be hidden at the back, or in the box of things you’ve stored away ‘just in case’, or, it might there right in front of you, just overlooked, unworn or forgotten. For me, a denim jacket is an absolute staple item, something I wear all through the year and in lots of different ways. I simply could not imagine not having one. My favourite (and most worn) is a very old (I’m talking nearly 15 years old) classic western style from Gap, which I picked up in the sale, (an impulse purchase as I wasn’t absolutely sure I would wear it). I think I’ve worn it at least once a week, every week, since I purchased it. Now cost per wear it owes me nothing, in fact, I am seriously in credit! Finding the ‘right’ denim jacket is the key (if you don’t have one). I favour a classic style, slightly fitted and cropped, no unnecessary details, patch pockets at the front, buttoned cuffs (which I always wear turned up), and a small neat collar. So, how do I get so much wear out of it? In Summer/Summer I’ll put it over more or less any style of dress, from maxi to midi. I’ll wear it over anything that I want to ‘dress down’ a notch, day or evening. Great with a
14

leather skirt, pencil, full or statement skirts, tailored trousers, the list goes on. In colder weather, I’ll layer my denim over knitwear or a sweatshirt, and under a coat or trench, adding a scarf as necessary. Adorn with a brooch to add interest, (I love my treasured Chanel one), turn the collar up and roll up the cuffs for a relaxed edge. Look for a good weight denim, not too much stretch in it, and a mid wash colour (not too dark, not too light). Where to buy? Gap is always a good start. Marks and Spencer, Hush, HM … in fact there are so many great options out there. Just make sure it fits properly and you feel good in it then prepare to wonder how you ever managed without one! ^

LeeP ACCOUNTANTS
CELEBRATE MOVING TO NEW PREMISES WITH A LAUNCH PARTY!
L
eeP Accountants was started in 2016 aiming to provide businesses with a straight-talking, digitally-advanced accountancy service and a “nosurprises” monthly pricing option. Existing clients are delighted with the service they receive leaving google reviews such as “a breath of fresh air compared to other accountants”; “Talks in plain English without dumbing things down”; “An extremely professional service and has helped me save a lot of tax”. Since 2016, the business has matured steadily and the “small but perfectly formed” quartet of Accountants now need to move to bigger premises to accommodate future growth. The founding partner, Polly Lee (ACA) said “I’m so proud of the team and the new offices. I’m really looking forward to having meetings there and it even has its own state-of-the-art training
16

room for clients wanting to learn Quickbooks™ or Xero™”. The new offices in Woodston are currently undergoing major refurbishment and
an office-warming party date will be released in due course. Polly, a self-confessed ‘petrol-head”, aims to inject some motorbike related décor to the premises and has quite a few biker-clients to whom it may appeal. Small Acorns From a growth perspective, the business started with just a handful of clients who were family and friends in 2016. Trust and awareness of the firm grew initially through consistent networking within the local community latterly assisted by strong support from existing clientadvocates as its reputation flourished. The proposition which attracted business owners most was the fact that there was a clear menu of fees so they could pick and choose the service needed plus the fees could be spread over the course of the year. They knew exactly what service(s) they were getting and what it was going to cost up-front meaning cashflow budgeting was easy. Clients also liked the firm’s “downto-earth”, friendly and professional approach which meant that “having conversations with your accountant were almost pleasurable” ^ > Any business owners, sole-traders, contractors or landlords looking for Accountants that “go-the-extra-mile” should get in touch with the team on 01733 699033 or email contact@leepfinancial.co.uk

QueenBee with Alexandra Agboke
Alex Agboke is QueenBee’s self-styled fashion guru - she can answer all of your questions and offer top notch advice. So ask away... she’s here to help! Hi Alex, I used to dress more "out there” when I was younger. I feel like over the years i have lost my style mojo. Any tips on how to get it back? Lena, Shropshire Alex Hey Lena, I think we can all identify with this in some way. Life makes its demands on your wardrobe and often dictates what you should be wearing in any given season. No pastels, jewellery or silk in the toddler years, a casual male dominated work place, eight months of winter and the daily dog walk, to name but a few. But I do have a couple of tried and tested tips from my own style armoury. 1. Dressing with adventure takes confidence and you start by choosing not to care what other people say when you start changing it up. Its time to dress for you. 2. Only buy pieces that you absolutely love. Many of us veer towards dressing more classically as we get older, neglecting our creative wild child. However, think about what it was in those styles that made you look and feeling more Finery London
18
QueenBee Summer 2019
unique. Was it the fabric, or the colour? Perhaps the sleeve detailing made it feel a little more handmade? Basically, Lena, if its not “wowing” you - leave it on the rail - even if it is 70% off and a complete bargain! Continue to look for that statement jewellery in bold colours that make you feel like sunshine. Or the 'off the bias cut' skirt with its unusual drapery. Whatever it is for you, don't let the socially acceptable norms quench your inner style child. 3. Look for brands that are a little more edgy and dramatic - a high puffball sleeve or a bright geometric print… and think about exactly how that piece could make you feel. If you put it on and feel underwhelmed in any sense of the word leave it behind. The brief has changed. You need to consider how you feel, not just what you look like. Current high street stores worth a look are Finery, Cos, Madeleine, Uterque, Hush and Zara.
Alex, I’m quite a classic dresser in my early 50’s and I am struggling dressing more casually and not looking so formal. I don't want to look old-fashioned. Jasmine, London As a classic, this is a worldwide problem, so don't feel alone. Classic style personalities enjoy a smart, timeless and well put together look so the thought of casually throwing something on is much more difficult, especially in our fashion era where “oversized” and “casual whenever possible” is the style of the day. My advice to you, Jasmine, is that unless you are going dog walking, hiking or scuba diving then dressing to feel comfortable in your own skin should be your top priority. If you feel like a slob in mom jeans and prefer a crisp white crepe trouser with a loafer instead then thats what you need to wear. If you love wearing dresses, try a jumpsuit so you still have the smartness of the one-piece. Dressing is about ‘expressing” and you have to be honest with yourself. The day I decided I didn't like cotton tops was a liberating one - trust me. You will rarely find me in in cotton anything (except jeans of course). Finally, if it is a more casual occasion, then work out how to feel stylish apart from your clothing. Maybe its your pearl earrings, or impeccable make-up. Perhaps its even just your fragrance. Effort and elegance are your hallmark so own your style whole heartedly! ^ > Email alexandra@stylepeg.com

Beyond the Comfort Zone “Our deepest fear is not that we are inadequate. Our deepest fear is that we are POWERFUL BEYOND MEASURE. It is our LIGHT, not our darkness that most frightens us. We ask ourselves – Who am I to be brilliant, gorgeous, talented, fabulous? Actually, who are you not to be? “ Marianne Williamson.
M
ost of us stay within the safety of our comfort zone because we fear change and the unknown. We fear that we may change and be judged by people we love and even those who don’t know us, so we choose to stay where we are.
Start small. Easy ways to step outside our comfort zone are to take a different route to work, try new foods or a new physical
activity. Doing something new with your body creates new neural pathways and rewires the brain to make you smarter.
Our mindset determines whether we believe we can learn something new. However, often our mindset is what gets in the way of us exploring change but we can shift our mindset by taking small steps into the unknown. If embracing the unknown and knowing that every struggle is helping us become stronger, more resilient and better able to deal with what life throws at us, isn’t it worth taking that first step for you? ^ Kath and Simon Burrows, Movement and Mindset Coaches > For more details call or text: 07732 730501 or email: info@acroalchemy.com Visit the facebook page for more details @acroalchemy

Summer Glow IN 3 SIMPLE STEPS!
A
t Kiss & Makeup we want every woman to look and feel like the most beautiful and confident version of themselves. Bringing that feeling from our makeup studios to you here, we are letting you in to our industry secrets, keeping you up to date with seasonal trends, our favourite products and how to use them.
22
QueenBee Summer 2019
The weather is certainly warming up and event season is well upon us. Our most requested look right now is for glowing and flawless looking skin. Not too much, but still good coverage. Not too shiny, but a dewy and fresh finish. And it must last all day, and of course all night long too! So here’s how you can achieve this in 3 simple steps:
STEP 1 - PREPARING YOUR SKIN IS KEY Thoroughly cleanse, tone and moisturise your skin before applying any products to your face. Using your fingers, gently massage an Illuminating cream into your skin and this will give your skin a pearlescent effect – the GLOW! HIGH STREET: Loreal True Match Liquid Glow Illuminator HIGH END: MAC Strobe Cream
STEP 2 - FLAWLESS FOUNDATION Apply a natural/medium coverage of foundation, using a damp sponge in a bouncing motion. This will give a sheer finish, whilst also pushing & setting the product into the skin. HIGH STREET: Primark mixed sponge pack HIGH END: Beauty Blender
STEP 3 - CONTOUR & HIGHLIGHT Using a large fluffy brush with a matte bronzer, gently dust over either side of the face in a number 3 shape. You can then use the same brush (or a different one if you’re a brush addict like us!) and gently dust a HIGH STREET: shimmer bronzer/ Rimmel Kate highlighter above Palette your cheekbones and all over the HIGH END: centre of your face. Dior Palette
BONUS TOP TIP! If you have oily skin, use an oil control lotion instead of the illuminator and set the foundation with a loose, translucent powder. It might look matte at first, but leave for 30 mins and your natural oils will come through to give you that glow! We hope you enjoy creating this makeup look and please tag us in your selfies! If you would like to learn more, we offer 1-2-1 & Group Makeup Lessons too! ^ See you next issue…

"Women and weight lifting have not gone together pretty well. We all know the myth about women and weights. The belief that lifting weights would change a woman’s body and give it a manly texture is strong among women and girls all over the world. However, this may not be the actual truth. On the contrary, weightlifting is actually beneficial for women. Research proves that women's bodies don’t make enough testosterone to have muscles equivalent to a man. All in all, the general misconception about women and weightlifting needs to change. Women need to realize the fact that lifting a certain amount of weight is actually going to help their body stay fit and in shape. Plus, with all the stress relieving benefits, weightlifting may actually be a great break from work and all the daily stresses. You shouldn’t be afraid of some little weights, they can actually benefit you more than you think!" The eyes have it! Stila Shimmer & Glow Liquid Eye Shadow £24.99 • www.marksandspencer.com As we are talking about summer, I am sticking with some nice glow products and this eye shadow is no exception. It’s a different texture to normal and you need to shake as it’s an oil mixed with shimmering particles, but the effect on the lids is gorgeous. They have a great Stila range in the M&S at the Brotherhood Retail Park.
Getting the glow… Tropical Glow – Fluid Highlighter For Face, by Diego Dalla Palma £19.99 • www.marksandspencer.com This is probably one of the best highlighters I have ever used and I have tried a few as I do like a dewy glow finish on my face. I dab it on my forehead, chin, cheekbones and just in my cupids bow. However, be careful as you can end up looking like the Tinman!! QueenBee Summer 2019

estival season lover or love experimenting with unique makeup looks? Then this is for you! I thought I would piece together a little inspo for you so you are festival summer time ready. So lets talk about bright, bold blocks of colour and a strong highlight. For a colour blocking, bright bold statement I use the following colours: canary yellow, vibrant pinks, lime greens and aqua blues. I have found Morphe pallets to work really well for these looks as they supply a wide range of strong and vibrant colours. For a bit of contrast I use a shimmery pigment at the inner corners of the eyes to accent the tear duct points. Finish off with a strong brow highlight, eyeliner both on the lid and water line. Ooh and don’t forget to place eyeshadow under the eyes and smoke out! Use the strong accent colour and blend into the shimmery pigment. Love Love Love. This is a bold look

to pull off and its not for everyone but it does look really amazing when worn right. LOUD LASHES Pre-coloured false lashes anyone? This will kick your festival look right up the bottom and push it to the next level. You could even layer those neon lashes for a really extra look. Top tip would be to match it to your accent bold colour so that it still looks feminine and professional editorial worthy. Alternatively if you want don’t want to go all out with neon lashes you could apply some Tatti lashes or apply black mascara and add a dash of colour to your lash tips using the eyeshadow and setting spray technique. GLITTER BABY! You just simply cannot go wrong with glitter. You can get glitter makeup in all sorts of products from eyeshadows, baked eyeshadows, glitter sticks, glitter creams, glitter gels and loose glitter - you name it you can get it. You could even apply some glitter on QueenBee Summer 2019

Try and match the lips to your accent eye colours and then blend together starting dark on the outer edges and blend into a lighter colour. This is great for adding volume to your pout and also gives it that extra look perfect for festival and summer season. A bright pink lip looks fabulous in the summer. Four generations of nails at Arabellaz by Kathryn Grace

y mum, daughter grand-daughter and I recently treated ourselves to a 'four generations of nail pampering' session at Arabellaz in Yaxley! Despite living within a one-mile radius of each other, we don't often get the opportunity to be under the same roof, so not only was it wonderful to spend time together, it was a real treat to have a professional manicure and polish. My daughter Lucy and I chose a vegan Gelish polish which lasts for up to 3 weeks, while my mum Jean and grand-daughter Brooke chose a normal nail polish. Brooke had never been to a salon before so she was super-excited and chose a different colour for each nail, some with added sparkle! This group booking idea is fantastic for friends or family members to spend quality time together and be pampered at the same time - and the ladies at Arabellaz are very welcoming and friendly! > Visit www.arabellaz.com
Pearly whites?

ellowing teeth are nothing to smile about, so when QueenBee were recently sent some teeth whitening products from Polished London to try, we couldn't wait to give them a go! We love the fact that the products are vegan and cruelty free and they are safe non-peroxide formulas that won’t cause irritation or sensitivity. Soooo, could we transform our pearly yellows to pearly whites? Let's see! We tried the Polished Teeth Whitening Powder which you use in place of your regular toothpaste once a day for 2 weeks. Alongside this we used the Charcoal mouthwash which has a powerful, detoxyfying whitening power! The verdict? We are seriously impressed so far our pearly whites are defintiely more pearly! We're going to continue our quest for whiter teeth with the Polished London Whitening Strips, so watch this space for an update in the next issue!

Places like Jamaica may suit you and a visit to Dunns river falls, or maybe Havana in Cuba where you can sit and have a coffee or cigar outside a local cafe whilst watching the old style Mustangs or Cadillacs cruise by. Beaches are stunning in both and maybe that is why people are booking to go further this year. LIZZIE BENTON OFFERS ADVICE & GUIDANCE ABOUT REAL LIFE ISSUES
Q: I’ve been with my partner a while now, and it’s true to say we’ve reached peak comfortable phase. Sex has practically gone out of the window and I just don’t know how to get things going again. A: Sex is a really important part of any relationship, it helps us to feel connected and supports us in feeling close to our partner. If sex is almost off the table you’ll be feeling a little self-conscious and unloved, which is no way to be when you’re in a loving relationship. The first thing to do is to get it out in the air and talk about it just to check there’s nothing going on under the surface with your partner. Once you’ve established it’s nothing more serious like stress or illness related, you can then crack on with finding your flow again. The first step for you both is to pledge to make an effort. If you’ve got into the habit of ‘letting it all go’, then there’s
little room for mystery and this can dull the spark instantly. Start slow by dedicating at least one night a week to the two of you, whether you cook together or go out, ensure you’re actually making time for each other. The other thing to be conscious of is to ensure you’re being present when it comes to sex, are you communicating your needs and expressing what you want? If you’re not present and ‘in the moment’ sex can quickly feel like a chore rather than a pleasure. Laughter is often one of the most positive emotions that can lead to a pleasurable sex life, so don’t forget to also work on having a laugh together and going back to having fun. I know it all sounds easier said than done, but just don’t overthink it. lizaboo.co.uk ^

THE NEW FACE OF DIVORCE
I
f you sadly reach the conclusion that your marriage is irretrievably broken down, unlike what happens in many jurisdictions around the world, you can’t just make a mutual decision to start divorce proceedings. In this country you still have to apportion blame or wait for a minimum of two years from separation. Even then you need the consent of the other spouse without which you have to wait five years. No fault divorce was first introduced by the Family Law Act 1996 but was later considered unworkable and repealed. There has been a movement for reform ever since and demands for change mounted after the Tini Owens case last year. Mrs Owens had filed for divorce on the grounds of her husband’s unreasonable behaviour but she failed right up to the Supreme Court to provide sufficient evidence of that behaviour being unreasonable enough and the divorce was thrown out. She has had to wait for the expiry of the full five years.
Mrs Owen’s situation was highly unusual and it is very rare for divorce proceedings to be contested. Nonetheless it is not a good start to ending the marriage when you have to raise allegations of unpalatable behaviour which often sets the tone for the rest of the case. The new law is likely to require that just one of the spouses gives notice that the marriage has broken down and the separation period is reduced to nine months. The Government is committed to reforming divorce law in the next parliamentary session, which starts in May. Whether the recent turmoil over Brexit will derail this timetable is another matter. But the push for reform is now very strong. The other major divorce reform introduced recently is modernising the process,
namely the ability to apply online for the issue of a divorce petition. These are already coming through the system but in the early stages. Currently you still need to satisfy the grounds for divorce or it will be rejected at decree nisi stage. You must also be careful that you fill in the sections about applying for costs and most importantly, applying for financial orders. If you have any queries or doubts about the process, contact a family law specialist ^ Belinda Smith is the owner and ’t principal of Belinda Smith and ” Co., Family Law solicitors based at Asset House, 27-28 Thorpe Wood, Peterborough, PE3 6SR

Fenland Ramblings by Tracy Hefferon
S
ummer is here at last and now is the time to enjoy our wonderful English countryside and see it at its very best. This issue’s walk is an easy circular ramble taking in two of the areas most beautiful villages, Fotheringhay and Woodnewton. The walk starts at Fotheringhay, which is located just off the A605 from Peterborough heading towards Oundle. Park your car on High Street just as you round the bend into the village. There is so much to see here that you could spend an entire day just musing around so make sure you leave plenty of time to take in the best of both villages. First place to check out has to be the site of Fotheringhay Castle, which is located behind you towards the rear of Castle Farm Guest House. All sorts of visitors frequented the castle, which was built in 1100, including Queen Elizabeth I. Richard III was born there and Mary Queen of Scots was tried and executed there. Next stop is the church. It is stunning and
48
QueenBee Summer 2019
extraordinarily lavish for a small village church. In its heyday, it was twice the size it is today! Start your walk by crossing over High Street at the splendid Falcon Inn and follow the right of way over a field, across a bridge over Willowbrook and alongside this tranquil, ancient waterway. At the ‘junction’ in footpaths, turn right and briefly join the Nene Way before taking a left and merging onto the right of way again. This path takes you through a small area of woodland then across meadows to Woodnewton. The scenery here is particularly gorgeous and you can’t hear anything but birdsong. Woodnewton is another great village to spend time pottering. There are some beautiful old cottages and houses dating back to the 1600s, another fabulous pub, The White Swan, and a lovely 12th century church which houses the grave of Woodnewton’s most famous former resident, Coco the Clown. Once you’ve had a good, old explore, head toward the village signpost on the small green, veer right then take a sharp left alongside a picture-postcard row of cottages, back over Willowbrook and through fields and meadows until are back in Fotheringhay. The walk is a gentle 3.5 miles and although it takes one and a half to two hours to complete, I’m sure it will take you much, much longer as there really is so much to see and do in this tiny area alone. ello, sunshine! Isn’t it exhilarating when Summer comes around? The warmth, the wildlife, the flowers and colours - Truly nourishing our mind, body and soul.
It feels oh-so-good to have the sun on our backs whilst our feet are in the dirt, tending the plants we’ve nurtured from seed since by Lucy Grace March. The QueenBee allotment is now filled and flourishing - we look forward to sharing our harvests with you over this season, so join us on social media to see what’s on the menu! The mission to live more sustainably, reduce waste significantly, and eat much more healthily does bring some challenges - especially if, like us, you have a whole load of bindweed deep beneath the surface of your soil, endlessly popping up and spreading between plants! Weeding is certainly a small price to pay for achieving these goals, but it’s a tedious job nonetheless. So, this year we’ve
dedicated extra planning and preparation to reducing weeds as much as we possibly can. Here’s how we’re doing it. ‘Mulching’ is the act of adding organic material onto the surface of soil - such as straw, grass cuttings or wood chips. It keeps the ground beneath warm and moist whilst preventing weeds from popping up. The natural matter then rots down to feed and fertilise the soil, which feeds your plants - happy days! When it does start to rot down, a fresh layer is simply added on top. However, this can be a costly process if you’re buying the mulch material in, so we sought out options that wouldn’t cost us a penny! We save all of our paper waste and put it through the shredder. This can be spread around and between plants – just add water to it to stop it blowing away! Newspaper is also really useful in whole sheets to cover larger spaces. Plain corrugated cardboard provides a thick bottom layer that will last a little longer than just paper. Supermarkets will give you as many empty boxes as you need – just ask with a smile! Rabbit or guinea-pig hutch waste (poop and straw/sawdust) makes a perfect mulch and fertiliser – slowly rotting down to improve soil and nourish plants. Many thanks to the local ladies who are donating it to our cause! ^

First thing is to tidy up and reduce your Summer garden remains - plants such as tulips, daffodils, lily of the valley, primrose, iris and hellebores will now have exhausted their energies and you can now cut all the debris away to ground level. Any Summer bulbs can be removed from the ground and stored and this is also a great time to maximise in splitting off overpopulated areas and reselecting new areas of infill. It’s like a freebie from existing plants, carefully dig around the area and separate the mass and replant, it really is that easy! Here are a few examples of plants that can be divided: Agapanthus, Anemone, Aster, Bergenia (elephant’s ears), Convallaria (lily-of-the-valley) Crocosmia, Dierama, Delphinium, Epimedium, 52
QueenBee Summer 2019
Eryngium (sea holly), Euphorbia, Gentiana (gentian) Geranium, Helianthus, Hemerocallis (daylily), Hosta, Iris, Lychnis, Lysichiton, Lysimachia, ornamental grasses, Primula (primrose) Ranunculus (buttercup), Salvia, Sedum, Verbena, Zantedeschia (arum lily). June is the month to create stunning show stopping hanging baskets; tubs can be filled and your borders can now gain new life, but first in your borders, get weeding! New plants will not want to compete for any soil moisture with greedy weeds so give your new additions the best chance by clearing your borders along with a nice organic compost to renew and boost soil health. Bedding plants are in abundance in all nurseries so here’s a top tip!: Ensure the roots are nice and relaxed before you plant them, if a plant is dry and tight in its pot it could be pot bound. Water your plants well before you remove from their packaging and gently manipulate the roots if they do seem too tight - they need to make friends with the soil they are about to sit in. Give them love before you plant
and they will love you back by developing beautiful blooms. Lawn care is also important going into drier periods. Lawn feed and water regularly and avoid too low a mower setting, any edging needs watering as it can soon look parched. Keep an eye on roses for green fly and slugs and snails especially around hostas, delphinium and dahlias. You can buy organic pellets which when watered swell and get eaten at nighttime, reducing damage to your blooms. It’s a wonderful 3 months ahead and enjoy experimenting with colours, density and height in your borders. Foxgloves and hollyhocks can really give the wow factor at the back edge of borders - ensure they are supported with canes as they soon grow, as do majestic sunflowers, but what a welcome addition indeed! Hydrangea are the belle of the Summer garden ball but need lots of water, so bear this in mind if you intend to introduce one into your garden. Give it a nice layer of fertiliser around July, they like to be pampered. Keep an eye on watering, especially tubs and baskets as they dry out very quickly. See you in the Autumn edition and wishing you all a very happy Summer! ^ Contact Kerry on 0751 475 4960 Follow her on facebook @kerrylovesgardening

H O W TO PLAN A WEDDING WITHOUT LOSING THE PLOT By Anna Morrish, Quibble Content • quibblecontent.co.uk
I
t’s officially wedding season. Couples are tying the knot right, left and centre. But, when it come to planning a wedding, is it all sparkles, excitement and happiness? Many of you reading this may say “yes”, that planning your wedding was or is the most amazing time of your life, but on the other hand there will be other’s reading this feeling overwhelmed, nervous, even upset. ALL THE EMOTIONS Weddings are known for bringing out a whole host of emotions in all those connected to it. I have personally felt the fear of “will everything get done in time” and “how on earth will we pay for it”, along with the constant battle in my head to sack it all off and elope abroad – It’d be so much easier! FULL-TIME WEDDING PLANNER When you’re planning a wedding, you have about 50 plates to spin all at once. You must pay suppliers, ensure they’re talking to one another, that your guests’ needs are met and that everyone will actually turn up when they say they will. It’s a full-time job! And, when you already have a fulltime job, that’s when everything can start to get on top of you.
54
QueenBee Summer 2019
DON’T BE POLITE When you work full-time and you’re planning a wedding, you can’t afford to be polite anymore. That’s not to say you should start being rude to people. What I mean is that people will often offer their help and support, but we’re too polite to take them up on it. With my wedding just around the corner, I’m finally accepting help from friends, family and suppliers. It’s lifted a huge weight off my shoulders. YOUR TOOL BELT Once you have enlisted your friends and family to help, the next step is to organise. I recommend the following: • Join UK Facebook groups for those getting married in the same year as you. • Set up a GDrive account, creating files with to do lists and give access to people who’re helping you out. • Use a budgeting app like YNAB (You Need A Budget). • Use an activity tracker like Garmin Connect. And finally… Relax. It will fall into place and just remember that no one will notice the little things you forget to do, only you ^

THE LATEST TECHNIQUES IN NON-SURGICAL FACE LIFT
T
he demand for cosmetic procedures is stronger than ever with patients looking for the latest innovations to make them look and feel better about themselves. There is certainly a demand for cosmetic procedures with predictable results, little discomfort and minimal down time and risks of adverse reactions such as allergies. More and more people are choosing non-surgical cosmetic treatments as they are more in control of the final outcome and can return quickly to their busy lives. Non-surgical face lift is gaining an incredible popularity using a combination of thread lifting, threat rejuvenation, botox and dermal fillers. There have been differing opinions on whether or not threat lifting actually works.Yes, it does... provided it is done using the correct technique and by a skilled practitioner using only highest quality of resorbable barbed threads. Natural polydiaoxanone threads have been used for over 30 years as a resorbable suture materials in different fields of medicine. With time, studies revealed mechanically induced skin tension and a stimulation of new cell and collagen formation. Not only do the threads lift sagging skin and improve the appearance of jowls and nasolabial lines but they also improve the skin quality and texture. As a

result, the threads have high safety profile with complete absorption within 6 months to a year, having synthesized new collagen in the facial skin. The procedure of placing the threads causes minimal discomfort and downtime with slight swelling and bruising lasting about a week. The effects are evident straight away and for up to 2 years depending on age, lifestyle and skin condition. Cost starts from ÂŁ1000 depending on individual requirements ^ > To book a consultation with Dr. Victoria Sprinz call Bupa Herlington Dental Practice on 01733 234566 Email: PeterboroughHerlington@ bupadentalcare.co.uk

Is body positivity really such a big deal?
B
oth of my boys were C-Section babies, Henry was an emergency and Archie was a semi emergency. As you can imagine these births were pretty traumatic, and I’ve been left with a very significant overhang and “pouch” which most section mums will recognise. I didn’t have a good relationship with my body before I fell pregnant. At a size 12-14 and large chested, I wasn’t the same as the other girls I knew. Body positivity wasn’t a thing back then or, if it was, it wasn’t as widely spoken about as it is now. I’m now a size 16-18. It’s only two dress sizes bigger but in terms of how society views those numbers, it seems like a massive increase. Even shopping on the
By Shannon Whitlock
high street for clothes in those sizes is tricky, a lot of shops don’t stock that size in store. A lot of my clothes shopping is done online. It took me almost 5 years to simply like my body. It grew two beautiful children and nourished one of them for 18 months after his birth. But why wasn’t that enough for me to love it? Diversity of the female body isn’t represented enough in mainstream media, we only see society’s perception of the “Perfect Body”. I don’t have a daughter. But I do have two young boys who will grow up to see their mum hating her body which will give them a warped view of how a female should look. Even as a “boy mama”, I have a responsibility to show them that everyone is different. It was that realisation which helped me love myself again. Some days are harder than others and I’ll feel down about it. It’s not been an easy journey. However, I’m determined not to be at war with myself anymore ^ > Read Shannon's blog www.peanutandsprout.co.uk. Find her on instagram @peanutandsprout QueenBee Summer 2019

"As a life time vegetarian from Southern India, I have a vested interest in bringing the unique and healthy recipes to the rest of the world. Vegan and vegetarian food has been gaining popularity for the right reasons over the years. They have great health benefits and have been practiced in certain countries for centuries. Indian food is often compartmentalized in the UK to a very limited and almost single genre of Indian cuisine. This series will hopefully widen the horizons of knowledge and great benefits of the multitude of cuisines that exist in India. There are 27 states in India with completely different cuisines and sometimes 2 or 3 varieties in each state! Chickpeas are a popular legume in mediterranean food and also indian cuisine. A simple South Indian recipe for a healthy snack is called ‘Sundal’. Coconut is an important ingredient along with some herbs. Coconut is rich in vitamins and minerals but more importantly contains good HDL cholesterol and reduces the bad LDL cholesterol" ^ > Check out Kasthuri's amazing craft creations on her Facebook and Instagram pages @krafateria 60

Interesting Chickpea facts! • Chickpeas have lots of different different names all over the world, such as garbanzo beans, bengal grams, egyptian peas, ceci beans and kabuli chana. • Chickpeas come in a variety of different types and colours, not just the common beige variety. There are also be black, green, red and brown chickpeas. • Chickpeas are a great source of fibre and are great for maintaining a healthy digestive system. The dietary fibre in chickpeas and their low GI may also assist with weight loss by making you feel fuller for longer. • Chickpeas are super versatile. There’s a whole bunch of chickpea recipes out there. Try eating them dry roasted and sprinkled with flavour. • Ground chickpeas have been used as a coffee substitute since the 18th century and are still commonly used as a caffeinefree alternative today. • Chickpeas are packed full of good stuff: antioxidants, vitamins and minerals including folate, magnesium, vitamin b6, vitamin c, iron, potassium, calcium, phosphorus and zinc. They are also high in protein so are a really meat replacement for vegetarians and vegans.

WHO SUFFERS THE MOST WITH MENTAL HEALTH ISSUES? By Gary Johannes
W
ell, the World Health Organisation says it’s fifty / fifty. However, they also say that women will suffer more from anxiety whereas men will suffer more with substance abuse, so we know mental health issues are an equal problem for both sexes. The WHO shows that one-in-six people with mental health issues are aged between 10 and 19 years, with half of all mental health conditions starting by the age of fourteen. Sadly, most cases go undetected and untreated. Globally, depression is one of the leading causes of illness and disability among adolescents. Suicide is the third leading cause of death in 15 to19-year-olds. The troubling thing we are seeing more and more as therapists at Inspired To Change, is the amount of young people who are suffering terribly with chronic mental health issues. We are seeing children as young as six years old. In a survey carried out every seven years, the UK has revealed soaring rates of mental illness among young women in particular. Young women are now considered to be an ‘at risk group’, and despite seeing their GP about their concerns, only 20% received treatment in the last twelve months, according to the study. Worryingly, in the age group 16-24, reports of self-harm in females had trebled to
almost 20%. Often these young women are suffering from anxiety or depression too. Yet only around a third of this age group received treatment, compared with more than half of over-50s who self-harmed. The most worrying thing is the risk that without alternative, positive coping strategies, illnesses will become long-term and entrenched. Many experts have made it clear that we need to start adopting better strategies to support young people to stay mentally well. It’s not just about social media being bad for us. When I think about this generation now, the biggest change has been in technology. It is not all bad. It can be a good thing and we can find strategies there if we embrace it as a tool, but it’s not the only answer. If you have any concern about your mental health or that of a family member, your GP is the first stop, however there are many other organisations that can give advice and support. You will find lots of helpful articles on my website that offer strategies to allow you to feel more in control ^ By Gary Johannes AHD DHP HPD MNCH (Reg.) AfSFH (Reg.) eing a lifelong sufferer of anxiety, I read the recent report about how creative activities can boost your mood with interest. Having worked in publishing for eighteen years and having a creative family, I know a lot of creative people but I also know many folk who claim to not having a creative bone in their body.
And the three-tiered Black Forest Gateau ended up on my not-very-sensible-shoesfor-school when I inadvertently picked up the upside down Quality Street tin housing said gateau by the sides and NOT the bottom. I was very good at making clay penises though, much to the delight of my classmates and the utter disgust of my longsuffering pottery teacher, Mrs. Parsons. So incensed was she at finding a freshly-fired penis every single time she emptied the kiln, she threatened to resign. Bless her.
When my best friend suffered a catastrophic brain haemorrhage in 2010, I was lost for a year or two until I subconsciously decided to get creative by writing a book. It was something I’d wanted to do for years and so I just did it.
