LIONS, TIGERS & BEARS - OH MY!
H
ave you ever felt anxiety, panic and fear just seeming to creep up on you? Leaving you with a racing heart, sweaty palms and with no control over your body?
Well you can blame your ancestors!
By Victoria Maskell
anxiety sufferers have heard this “helpful” advice from a friend or family member? The trouble is most of the time we’re not consciously making the decision to feel anxious. In fact, the decision is made in our brains BEFORE we are consciously aware of it! Before we know it, we have a racing heart, sweaty palms and our stomachs are churning. It’s not as if anyone would CHOOSE to feel like this, is it!
The Reptilian part of your brain is the cause As a Psychotherapist I treat many clients of you feeling nervous in crowds, driving with these exact problems. They are on busy roads or giving a presentation at suffering from anxiety and work. But you can’t be too fears that are stopping them annoyed with it, it’s only trying The Reptilian from living healthy and to keep you safe! This part fulfilled lives. They want to go part of your brain of your brain has one job and on exotic holidays, but the idea one job only – to protect you is the cause of you of getting on a plane fills them from threats to your survival. feeling nervous in with so much fear and anxiety, Venturing out of your cave they can’t even book the trip! crowds, driving on at night meant you could be their social anxiety means eaten by a sabre tooth tiger busy roads or giving Or they constantly - so your Reptilian brain kept a presentation cancel plans you inside. QueenBeewellbeing But it feels like their mind takes over and causes these feelings automatically, in the same way that you instantly brake when driving if the car in front stops abruptly! No need to consciously think, your body just reacts to protect you. These responses are caused by your Reptilian brain trying to keep you safe. Luckily, there is now a rapid and transformational solution that is unlike any other type of therapy out there! Gone are the days of months and even years of therapy unearthing deeprooted traumas and divulging painful memories. BWRT® has revolutionised the world of therapy and can treat many mind-related conditions in as little as one session! Anything from anxiety, phobias, OCD, mild depression, stopping smoking, procrastination, low self-worth, goal achievement, motivation, sporting performance, exam confidence, trauma to grief and many more. I’ve had clients transformed from total fear and panic to laughing at the idea of that situation causing them any anxiety whatsoever in as little as 60 minutes! BWRT works by replacing outdated responses with your preferred way of thinking and feeling. It makes permanent changes to your neural networks, allowing people to transform their lives for the better and be free of anxiety ^

All for the #instalike...
F
ollowing on from the last issue’s article on the internet and social media, we thought it would be good to talk about Instagram
Oh how we love Insta! The pure escapism, life documenting, visual feast of a social media platform. It really is fab! We have all been guilty of losing ourselves in ‘the scroll’, following THE latest influencer (that makes our own lives seem pretty bland) and sharing photos to ‘the grid’ that show the best version of ourselves. It’s all pretty harmless… BUT… there is a growing discussion based on whether Instagram is adding too much pressure to young people’s lives. With an estimated 90% of all Instagram issuers being under the age of 25yrs, it’s not hard to see why the most liked photo of all time was 21yr old Kylie Jenner’s baby reveal. The photo amassed a mind boggling 18m likes in a matter of days.
Instagram has a come a long way since it’s Co-Founder Kevin Systrom’s haphazard first ever post of a dog (and his girlfriend’s foot) way back in 2010! Back in the early days of Insta things were less polished and a bit more… well... instant! It is well documented by Instagram influencers now about just how much work goes into getting the perfect shot. After the initial planning, hundreds of photos can be taken before one is selected, edited, tagged, and scheduled to drive aspiration among users and secure new followers and those ever-lucrative advertising deals. It’s good to remind our kids (and ourselves) that nothing is as perfect as Instagram would have us believe and that it is good to take a break from it every so often. Insta can set unachievable benchmarks for life and leave us feeling pretty flat in comparison. Remember, it’s ok to have flaws. Some days just wouldn’t make your Insta Stories… let alone the grid. It’s called reality, and it’s pretty #awesome too ^ > WPCS offers free support for 11-16 year olds in the Peterborough area. CLASS 2 NIC LIVES ON By Bird & Co Certified Public Accountants, www.birdandco.ltd
I
n a surprise announcement on 6.9.18, the Treasury confirmed that Class 2 NIC would not be abolished from 6.4.19 as had been on the cards since 2017.
Class 2 costs a maximum of £153.40 per year (for 2018-19) and provides some entitlement to the state pension and certain other state benefits. In July 2013, the government launched a consultation into simplifying NIC for the self-employed. Some streamlining of payment methods was achieved, with Class 2 now collected alongside Class 4 with income tax paid under self assessment, but the long-term aim was to merge the two classes. The Class 2 and 4 merger was to take effect from 6.4.18, but in November 2017 the effective date was pushed back to 6.4.19. This plan has now been abolished. Individuals who have been resident in the UK for at least three years, and paid into the national insurance system, can continue to make NI contributions by paying Class 2 NIC when they move abroad. This is a very useful way for non-resident individuals to build up qualifying years towards to the UK state pension. The proposed abolition of Class 2 NIC was to remove this lowcost route to add credits to their UK state pension entitlement. Those expatriate 8
QueenBee Winter 2018
individuals would have had to change to paying voluntary Class 3 NIC, which costs £761.85 per year compared to £153.40 for Class 2 (2018-19). Many people may not have realised that they were contracted-out. One way to check would be to look at an old payslip – one from before April 2016. If it shows the letter “D” or “N” on the National Insurance line then this means you were contractedout. Letter “A” would mean you were not contracted-out. If you have or previously had a married woman’s reduced rate election and were contracted-out your payslip would show the letter “E”. Letter “B” would mean you were not contracted-out. Until April 1977, married women could choose to pay a reduced rate of NIC (sometimes called the ‘small stamp’). You might still be paying the reduced rate if you opted in before the scheme ended. From 6 April 2016, no-one can be contracted-out ^ > For the full wording of this article, please see our website at www.birdandco.ltd. Call on 01733 850989. Based in Yaxley.

THE WINTER SOLSTICE by Lexie Wrightson
F
or me there is a day that is (whisper it) far more exciting that Christmas and one I look forward to every year. The Winter Solstice or Yule, the shortest day of the year, which falls on the 21st December. The origin of the word Yule, has several suggested origins from the Old English word, geĂľla, the Old Norse word jĂľl, a pagan festival celebrated at the winter solstice, or the Anglo-Saxon word for the festival of the Winter Solstice, 'Iul' meaning 'wheel'. Festivals held on Winter Solstice can be found throughout the ancient world; Romans, Persians and Pagans all held celebrations. The winter solstice, the rebirth of the Sun, is an important turning point. It marks the shortest day, when the hours of daylight are at their least. It's also the start of the increase in the hours of daylight, until the Summer Solstice, when darkness becomes ascendant once more. In order to celebrate I spend the day decorating the house with an abundance of evergreen from the garden, holly for flower arrangements, ivy for making a
10
QueenBee Winter 2018
door wreath, mistletoe hung over the front door and yes, we do decorate the Christmas tree too. When the sun starts to set, the magic real starts. Candles are lit along with a fire in the grate to remind us of the warmth of the sun. I have my own personal review of the year. I write three lists, a gratitude list for everything I have been grateful for during the year, a list of all that I want to be rid off (which I later burn in the fire to let go and start again) and a new list of intentions for the new year to come. When you are with friends this is a wonderful time to share your experiences of the year together, to support each other and welcome what is yet to come When that's over then it’s time for fun and merriment! Like every festival there is always feasting, warming foods, cakes and a tipple of homemade blackberry brandy to toast the death of the year and welcome in the sun ^ > For more details visit www.lexiewrightson.com Contact Lexie on 07915078843 or email abwrightson@hotmail.co.uk

QueenBee with Alexandra Agboke
Alex Agboke is QueenBee’s self-styled fashion agony aunt - she can answer all of your questions and offer top notch advice. So ask away... she’s here to help! will be more slimming. It’s all about perception and balance ladies. I always wear skinny jeans but never know what boots to wear - it’s so hard to find nice boots! Victoria Alex Skinny jeans look great with knee-highs - the taller you are the taller they need to be. But they also look great with ankle boots and these tend to come with more variety and are cheaper.
How do I wear knitwear without it making me look CHUNKY! Becki Alex Ah, great question! The key to looking stylish and staying warm this winter, when it comes to jumpers, is in the fabric content and neckline. Look for styles with more wool/cashmere content as they can be thinner yet super insulating. High acrylic and cotton blends that you tend to find on the high street are not going to cut it in sub zero temps. Get the label out or look at the composition online. You’ll also find that modern wool blends will get less dirty and can often be machinewashed on a gentle cycle. Be careful about your necklines too. You need to know what suits you - choosing the most flattering shape for you is the secret. If you are broad shouldered, like me, cashmere v-necks with cardigans or big scarves are my best options. If you are bustier, darker colours
My other tip would be to consider buying more than one type of boot, especially if you don’t want to get hedged into wearing skinny jeans all winter. Finding a style that fits all your needs quite a mission. For example, this year I am looking at three items of warm footwear. Leather fur-lined trainer boots – these will work with my three-quarter length trousers that aren’t skinny jeans. Then I’d like some mid heel knee-highs for my skinny jean days (I may wait until the sales for these so I can buy better quality). Finally, I will look on eBay or bargain sites for a pair of tall UGG-type boots for those dry but cold days when I want to feel really cosy and comfortable. In the world of styling we don’t recommend you dress from the bottom up but in the throws of winter, I like to throw this rule out of the window because staying warm has to be your main priority! ^ > Have you got a fashion dilemma or question? QueenBeefashion QUEENBEE ARE VERY EXCITED TO INTRODUCE LOCAL LADY MICHELLE ABBOTT, OUR NEW REGULAR STYLE CONTRIBUTOR! SHE'LL BE TALKING FASHION AND SHARING OUTFIT IDEAS AND STYLE INSPIRATION IN EVERY ISSUE.
H
ello! I’m Michelle, a 47 year old married mum of two boys (aged 11 and 7) and I’m a senior lawyer in Local Government. I’m also @maison_abbott on Instagram, where I share my daily outfits and styling tips, just because I love to do it. My Instagram I started my Instagram account about three years ago. I had discovered some great style blogs, which inspired me, and I noticed that they all had active Instagram accounts. I have always had a creative side, with a lifelong love of clothes (I wanted to be a fashion designer until life took me down a path which led me to a career in law!), and I had no real outlet for that until I started the IG account. My aspiration was to start my own blog, and I thought that if I could
16
QueenBee Winter 2018
attract a few followers through IG, then I might have an ‘audience’ to follow me when I started a blog page. The focal point of my instagram account has always been, and still is, my daily outfit post. This is always my actual outfit and I never fake it! What you see me wear in the morning is what I wear that day - not an outfit just photographed for that post or from another time. The exceptions to this are where I’m sharing a post from a collaboration, or showing some purchases, or trying on items in a shopping session. Either way, I’m completely honest about the origin of the post if it’s not what I’m wearing that day. My Style What I aim to achieve through the account is to inspire women to be confident in their choices and push the boundaries
QueenBeefashion - essentially - to wear what they want and feel good in their clothes. There is usually a way to style things appropriately for any age - the key is the attitude and confidence of the wearer. My confidence has grown hugely in my 40s and I now know what suits me, enhances my shape, and what feels right. My shopping rule is that if I like the outfit I’m already wearing more than the one I’m trying on - do not buy! I’d describe my style as classic with a modern, fresh edge. How my Instagram account has grown When I started my account, I never imagined that it would bring so many opportunities. I love to collaborate with small brands and I am now lucky enough to be working with a larger shoe brand to represent their products. What it also gives me, is a space to be creative and to indulge in what I have always loved - fashion. It sounds cliched, but in a life where I have a responsible and stressful career, a busy family life and a house to run and renovate, Instagram gives me a place to escape from that and do something just for me ^

2. Eat Right: A healthy outside starts from the inside! The thought of changing bad eating habits can be overwhelming; simply start with some food swaps, like swapping refined carbs (white bread, pasta, rice etc) for wholegrain. Keeping a food diary is great to see what we are consuming - you don’t always realise until you see it written in front of you and then it can become clearer what you may need to change.
1. Move More: Whether that be ditching the car and walking to work or school with the kids, lunging when you walk to put the kettle on in your home (I wouldn’t recommend the lunging in public, you might get a few odd looks!) or taking the stairs.
3. Drink Up: Did you know we should be drinking 2 to 3 litres of water a day? Water promotes healthy weight management and weight loss, along with many other benefits including improving complexion, increases brain power and provides energy.

Fenland Ramblings by Tracy Hefferon
I
was recently asked to write a regular column in QueenBee about the walks I do and the adventures I get up to on them. So here I am! After agreeing to do that, I decided to take it one step further and create a blog where I will share all my walks with you including routes, maps, photographs, distances and elevation as well as local tales, fenland phrases and funny stories along the way. Because after all, this is me doing the walking and funny things happen to me, whether I want them to or not. The centre of my beautiful, boggy universe is our wonderful cathedral city of Peterborough, with all my walks being within a twenty-mile radius of this much over-looked and underestimated historical region. There is a common belief that the Fens are boring and flat with nothing to see. This assumption makes my blood boil! The Fens ARE flat but the skies are huge, it's peaceful and less populated than more well-know geographical locations, with wildlife and woodlands, wetlands and farmland abound.
Venture a little further afield and the Nene Valley, the Northamptonshire and Lincolnshire borders along with Britain's smallest county of Rutland, offer some spectacular walking, taking in picturesque villages, meandering rivers, forests and gently rolling countryside. Not only will I feature one really great walk every issue, I will also tell you about nearby places of interest, pubs to pop into and en route, top-notch accommodation should you wish to make a weekend of it. The ‘doorstep mini break’ is becoming a bit of a thing with lots of people traveling only a few miles to get away from it all, enjoying some fresh air, good food and a change of scenery for just a day or two. We are so lucky to live in such a fabulous area of the country with so much rich and varied countryside on our doorstep and I look forward to you joining me next issue when I will be featuring the perfect fenland ramble for spring. In the meantime check out my blog for some winter walking inspiration… and grab your wellies and woolies and get out there! ^ > fenlandramblings.tracyhefferon.com

BEAUTY IN THE COMFORT OF YOUR OWN HOME
L
a Powder Box are a professional make-up & skin specialist team, founded by these lovely, local ladies Renée Bridges and Kat Neanor. Best friends for over 10 years, they have over 15 years experience within the beauty industry. One of things we love most about these ladies is that they will come to your own home for your treatment or makeover, so there's no need to worry about driving or parking (and you can stay in your comfy loungewear!). It gives you that added luxury and confidence, particularly if you have bad skin confidence issues and don't like to go out without makeup on. Kat visited QueenBee Editor, Kath so she could try out their incredible Glo Enzyme Peel facial. We've heard a lot about skin peels lately and how great they are in the winter months, so were keen to give them a try. The Glo Enzyme Peel facial is an exfoliant with natural fruit enzymes of cranberry and pomegranate to help give radiance to dry, dull, even dehydrated skin types. Salicylic acid further helps to remove dead cells to promote a smoother, clearer skin. It reveals young fresh cells and improves texture, while brightning and boosting collagen and elastin. It's the perfect pick me up to get your skin back on track with instant results, no skin trauma or aggressive peeling and no prep or down time. After her peel Kath said "I loved the effects just after the Enzyme Peel. My skin felt silky
smooth, rejuvenated and looked so much brighter. This is the perfect pick me up facial before a special night out and I will definitely be having another one of these facials!" We'd recommend having this facial the night before a special event - your makeup will glide on and you'll have a glow like never before! ^ SPECIAL READERS OFFER* La Powder Box are offering QueenBee readers a buy one, get one half price deal on The Glo Enzyme Peel facial (normally £50). So, get a friend over for a natter and a coffee, then you can both have your Glo Enzyme Peel facial for only £37.50 each! Or why not treat a friend of family member? This is the perfect gift idea for Christmas, birthdays and Mothers Day. To book call 0754 0730 046 (don't forget to mention QueenBee)

EYE COLOUR AND COMPLIMENTARY EYESHADOW
A
ccording to colour theory, opposite hues will always help to display the secondary colour of your iris. So Blue eyes look fab with orange toned eyeshadows, making the blue hue of your eye stand out and appear brighter. BROWN EYES Brown is a neutral colour, brown-eyed ladies can pull off pretty much any colour. If you have brown eyes, you should consider yourself super lucky when it comes to makeup. I am not kidding ladies, there is literally no eyeshadow colour that you can't pull off, so go crazy. However, when it comes to bringing out your natural beauty, there's a couple of colours that you should definitely have in your makeup bag. Brown, gold, and purple tones are basically guaranteed to make you look fabulous. If your eyes are a darker brown, you can use a green hue and a splash of silver eyeshadow to make them look lighter and brighter. BLUE EYES If you have blue eyes, there's a heap of
32
QueenBee Winter 2018
stunning makeup looks that you need to know all about. A good rule of thumb is to opt for colours on the opposite side of the colour wheel (see image below). So this means warm colours or eyeshadows with orange undertones. For a night out, try burgundy. A burgundy Smokey eye is the perfect sultry look for all of you blue-eyed stunners. Rose gold is also a fabulous look, so why not embrace it? Keep it soft and shimmery to make your blue eyes look amazing and stand out. Copper, gold, and warm browns are also your best buddy when it comes to enhancing those gorgeous blue eyes. Or for a simpler softer natural look stick to warm neutral tones. Soft browns and beige with perhaps a splash of pastel pink. Also subtle soft browns and golds with red or orange undertones are super flattering on blue eyes. GREEN AND HAZEL EYES Just like blue eyes, eyeshadows with warm undertones look amazing on green or hazel eyes. Burgundy and other rusty colours are guaranteed to set off those eyes. Deep and dark purples are perfect when you want to try something a little bit more drama. No eye colour wears a purple eyeshadow
QueenBeebeauty quite like green and hazel eyes. Did you know that your eyes are naturally bright, so you don't need to rely on vivid eyeshadow or liner to create an amazing look. A muted plum is perfect for a night out or if you want to try a metallic look, stick to gold. Gold complements green and hazel eyes very effectively because of its warmth. Also gold eyeshadow and a strong black liner are a perfect way to make your naturally bright eyes pop. If your eyes are a lighter shade of green or hazel, try peach or lilac for cool and flirty look. Peach or lilac are the perfect colours if you are going for a softer look. Peach is great if you are looking for something versatile, while lilac is a softer colour that will still stand out. If your hazel eyes are on the darker side, use a violet eyeshadow to lighten them up. There are exceptions to all rules so at the end of the day, be brave, try out some
new colours and have fun. I only use professional grade makeup and skincare on all my clients. I collaborated with Limelife By Alcone in June of this year. Alcone has been established for nearly 67 years and used to supply to the likes of Marilyn Monroe. I am also a vegan makeup artist and products that are leaping bunny are really important to me. Founded by Alastair Norwell and his partner Paula, this niche restaurant is named after the couple's two dogs. It is two levels high with a vegan restaurant downstairs and a jazz cocktail bar upstairs. Age Life Balance
by Melanie Coeshott
M
elanie Coeshott is a life coach, accountant and working mother of two, based in Peterborough. She has been interested in health and fitness for over 20 years and started Age Life Balance to explore our ageing destiny and get answers to life’s questions. Age Life Balance focuses on enjoying a rich, satisfying and balanced life today, with an eye on tomorrow. She hopes to inspire you, and others, to join her on the journey.
Are you getting older? Are there areas of your life that could do with some attention & TLC, before it’s too late? In reality, we’re all getting older, alas, this isn’t something we can control. People in the UK are living longer than ever before a combination of modern science and healthcare. Some individuals seem to be thriving to a ripe old age - even doing yoga, running marathons and so on, but that doesn’t mean that everyone experiences a great quality of life in their later years. We also frequently hear in the media about “the pensions crisis”, “the social care crisis”, “the NHS crisis”, “the loneliness crisis” not to mention increasing levels of obesity 36

and diabetes in our ageing population. So, it feels like we’re heading for a huge unavoidable train crash. Yet despite its relevance to us all, ageing remains a fairly taboo topic. Are we all in denial that it will happen to us? Age Life Balance takes a holistic look at what contributes to ‘successful ageing’ from different perspectives including health, nutrition, exercise, mindset, and youthfulness, as well as financial & practical considerations. My aim is to raise awareness and to bring the topic of
ageing into the mainstream. Around 25% of the way in which we age is genetic, with 75% being lifestyle related.
QueenBeewellbeing If there’s something that I can do to improve my chances of living a long, healthy and fulfilling life, I’m willing to give it a go! And if I can bring others with me on the journey, even better! Since launching in March 17, I’ve explored numerous age and life related topics through my weekly Age Life Balance blog (www.agelifebalance. com). Recent topics have included dealing with
sudden loss of a loved one, lifestyle change to promote youthfulness and health benefits of swimming - I’d encourage everyone to take a look. As a qualified coach, I also provide bespoke support to individuals on their own ageing journey. Topics are chosen by clients and can be wide-ranging. I’m currently coaching clients on weight-loss for good, finding a life companion and identifying their life purpose ^

Bye-bye dull skin at winter! By Milena Hunt from Feel Great Soap
HAPPY BODY BUTTER Ingredients: 225 grams organic raw shea butter 43 grams organic extra virgin coconut oil 20 drops orange essential oil 10 drops ginger essential oil 1 TBS arrowroot powder How to make:
E
ver wondered why our skin can get dull and dry in the winter? Blame layers of clothing, central heating and lack of sunshine! Don’t despair! You can make this supersimple body butter to keep your skin well-protected and conditioned. The shea butter and coconut oil deeply nourish the skin, while the essential oils stimulate and tone it. The arrowroot powder helps cut through the greasiness of the butter and improves its' texture and feel. Apparently, there’s scientific evidence that ginger oil can significantly reduce low back pain; whereas a combination of ginger and orange oil can bring relief from moderate to severe knee pain! What is there not to love about allnatural, preservative-free formulations that you can make in your own kitchen for yourself and your loved ones? Better for the planet, better for your pocket, better for your body, better for your mind ^

he winter season is here, along with the cold weather, and for some that ignites our aches and pains. So why not try combining the benefits of traditional massage therapy with the heat of a hot stone massage for a healing experience that’s both warming and relaxing? As many of us know, heat can be a powerful tool for relieving muscle tension and pain. This is just one of the many benefits of a hot stone massage.
Heat encourages your muscles and tendons to relax, relieving stiffness and increasing flexibility. If physical activity is reduced, your muscles can become stiff and lactic acid may build up.

While there are many physical benefits of hot stone massage, particularly for those with lower back pain and arthritis, our trained therapists will conduct a thorough consultation before the treatment, where you can discuss any concerns you may have. The oils that we use in this treatment are vegan and Peta certified. This is just one great treatment that we offer at Arabellaz and prices start from just ÂŁ35.
Hot stone massage therapy can help improve circulation by opening the blood vessels, making it easier for oxygen and nutrients to reach your muscles.

KEEPING CALM AND CARRYING ON … Hapi Hemp CBD oil I had read so much about CBD oil - the new ‘wonder product’ that people are using for depression, anxiety, pain and fibromyalgia, to name just a few. Sceptically, I ordered a small bottle of the Raspberry flavoured oil as I had heard about the rotten taste of the plain CBD oil, and surprisingly it tasted quite pleasant! Four weeks on I have to say it is worth the hype! I have felt much calmer and I am not stressing out over the things that I would normally stress out over! If I don’t take the oil now I notice the difference straight away. Hapi Hemp is launching mid January 2019 but in the meantime you can join the Hapi Hemp Facebook group @hapihemp

As fate would have it...
T
By Louisa Parr
here have been times in my life when I've felt as if things were really going well. I'm sailing calmer seas and on an even keel. But suddenly, something, somehow happens unexpectedly and my carefully made plans are blown completely out of the water!
no matter how hard they try. Then there are those amongst us who are far less worthy, and yet if they fell into a bucket of shite, they’d always manage to come out smelling of roses !
Is it Kismet that's steered me away at that particular moment, from that great idea, situation or person? People say that when something or someone passes you by, there is a good reason why it's happened and they weren't really meant for you anyway. I guess I'll never know, but it does make me wonder. Is our fate in the lap of the Gods or are we in total control of our own destiny?
Is it all down to chance, risk or common sense or simply about being in the right place at the right time? All I know is that I will continue to strive to be the best version of me that I can be and hope that it’s enough to see me through. Life is full of surprises, but I’ll keep chasing my dreams, making plans and hoping that fate deals me a kind hand or two. But, if Karma is at all interested in doing what she does best, I do have a list of some of the people she's forgotten... the good, the bad and the indifferent!
And what about Karma? I always thought she was meant to ensure we were all deserving of our lot according to our Like the wind, my course changes efforts made in this world? PLANNING YOUR 2019 HOLIDAY
C
hristmas is on the way, my favourite time of year. It's a time to spend with family, making plans for the New Year. As well as New Year resolutions and promises to quickly shift all that Christmas food, discussions will inevitably turn to holidays. Where to go? How long for? Self Catering or All Inclusive? Or maybe next year is going to be that once in a lifetime trip you've always promised yourself - backpacking around Thailand or hire yourself a convertible and drive along Route 66. Whatever your plans (or lack of plans!) it is without doubt a busy time of year for me! You will be inundated with adverts for destinations across the world, and I am here to help you decide what is really the best option for you.
Sarah Hounsell is your very own Personal Travel Consultant with years of experience. Working on your behalf, she can find, plan & tailor make the most perfect holiday for you.

A popular destination is Croatia. It is a fascinating country, still relatively new as a holiday destination, but with a fantastic combination of culture, history and beautiful beaches. Santorini is also popular, where you can hike in ancient Thira and watch the sunset in Oia or maybe visit the Caldera crater by deluxe catamaran. There are some beautiful bed and breakfasts here and some are still even set in the caves too! If you are thinking of getting away for the Easter holidays in April you will want to start looking at options soon, to ensure you get your perfect holiday. Easter is, of course, the start of spring and whilst you should experience warmer weather in the Mediterranean destinations, you need to look to countries such as Egypt and Turkey to guarantee temperatures in the low to mid 20's. Or maybe you look further afield to destinations with all year round guaranteed sunshine. Mexico or Cuba which will be basking in the low 30s, ideal for a cheeky cocktail, or maybe have a tranquil break on a Thai beach and sneak in a few days in Bangkok and visit the floating markets. January is always the busiest time of year for travel agents and one of my favourite times. There are days I literally step out of bed and straight into the office, armed with a strong black coffee. I always get caught up in everyone's excitement, whether it is a weekend break away or a holiday of a lifetime, I love the buzz of it all. I also enjoy taking tickets and documents to my customers houses and handing them a travel wallet with their luggage labels and meeting them, perhaps, for the first time. And trust me, I do get jealous of the very holidays that I have arranged for them! With more online companies going "bust" people are preferring the old fashioned
QueenBeetravel touch of someone listening to what you are looking for and then finding it for you, taking all the stress away at every stage and finally presenting you with all you need to head off to the airport. And of course, you have the reassurance of booking a holiday fully protected by either ABTA or ATOL. If this sounds like the sort of service you are looking for then please visit my page on Facebook. I have almost daily deals as a taster of what is on offer - let me tempt you with those, but also don't be afraid to ask me if you are looking for something different. If you have found something online, let me know and I will do my best to beat the price. So, it is just left for me to wish you a Merry Christmas, whether you are hoping for snow or wish you were somewhere warmer. Whatever you are doing, whoever you are with, enjoy whatever time off you have and give some thought as to what you want to do when you have time off ^
A happy customer! "Planning a holiday is always something I dread. I end up getting really stressed out trawling hundreds of websites, comparing prices, saving info etc. It's one of those time consuming jobs that I tend to put off! My brief to Sarah wasn't a simple brief… I have two teenage boys, my partner also has two boys and they all like different things. I am a real fusspot about the type of accommodation I want and I like a beach venue, whereas my partner is the opposite. It's so hard finding a holiday that suits us all. To be honest I had always thought Travel Consultants were only for very expensive holidays and people with an endless budget, but how wrong I was… Sarah found us a few options within 24 hours! However, being the cynic I took a look online myself, thinking she could never find us as good as deal as I had – but she had!
> No time to research and book a holiday or short break? It can be time consuming and frustrating trawling through travel websites! I can help! Tell me the type of holiday you’d like, the dates you can travel and your budget... then leave the rest to me. Whether it’s a romantic break, a family holiday, a sunny beach break or the Caribbean… on your behalf I will tailor make your perfect holiday! Call me today on 01733 646316 Sarah Hounsell
She found us the perfect place AND it was much cheaper than I could find. Not only that, but Sarah does all the leg work. She booked everything; my luggage labels were delivered to my door and every detail was covered. Also, four weeks before our trip I broke my foot and Sarah arranged for assistance at the airport there and back - what a star she is! I wouldn’t hesitate in using Sarah and will certainly book future holidays through her." Lorraine, Peterborough QueenBee Winter 2018

EMPLOYEE BENEFITS - WHAT DO WE REALLY WANT? By Anna Morrish, Quibble Content • quibblecontent.co.uk
O
n average, we spend 90,000 hours at work over the course of our lives. That’s a third of our lifetime! It’s therefore no surprise that we want to at least be happy at work.
The 2018 Global Talent Trends survey found that one in two employees would like to see a focus on wellbeing in their company. It’s important to note, companies that take the time to listen and understand the needs of their employees see an increased rate of productivity and increased retention, so it’s in a business’ best interest to review their culture and benefits structure. An evolution With the rise of the internet, developments in technology and evolving values, we’ve seen a huge rise in the number of wellness programs emerge in the workplace - from cycle to work schemes aiming to encourage us to maintain our health, free fruit, remote working, culture and innovation days, along with various forms of therapy to assist with our mental wellbeing. It’s said that 84% of employees have experienced physical, psychological or behavioural symptoms of poor mental health, which is why it’s essential to break the stigma of mental illness and provide support in the workplace – especially considering how much time we spend there. So, what do we really want? What employee benefits are key in ensuring you stay in the job you’re in? So many companies get it wrong and assume a pay rise will encourage staff to stay and keep them happy. Money is the key to happiness, right? Wrong. 48
QueenBee Winter 2018
What drives us? We all want to be listened to, to feel valued, respected and have the opportunity to make a difference. To achieve a sense of purpose it’s important to have clearly-defined goals that are both measurable and obtainable, resulting in recognition from managers. We also want to feel more in control of our work life. As such, some companies have adopted a results-only working environment (ROWE), allowing employees to work any time from any place, as long as the work gets done. Unlimited holidays, flexible and remote working are also benefits employees of today value. Dedicated culture days whereby we’re able to form connections and create a sense of belonging with other members of our team are incredibly valuable. Innovation days also allow employees to nurture their skills and train in a new area, which ultimately benefits the company, whilst enabling employees to make a meaningful impact and develop their career. Workplace wellness initiatives do more than promote healthy habits, they show employees that their employers care about them. If you want to make a difference, speak to your manager and even place a simple suggestions box in the communal area to encourage others to support your goals in achieving a happier work life balance ^

LIZZIE BENTON OFFERS ADVICE & GUIDANCE ABOUT REAL LIFE ISSUES
Q:My friend has a partner who is making her miserable. She complains about him all the time but doesn't do anything about it. I want to be a good friend, but the constant moaning is driving me crazy! What should I do? A: This must be exhausting, as being around a lot negative energy is tiring. The first thing to do is to talk to your friend about how much she is complaining about her partner. Say something casual, such as, “have you noticed how much we talk about (x)?”. Explain that you want to support her, but it's dominating the time you have together. It’s important for you to understand that she may not be aware of how much it comes into the conversation, or she may feel like you are the only support she has. Perhaps suggest that she talks to a professional about her feelings, as there may be some bigger underlying issue which she is struggling to face on her own.
Whatever you do, remember not to make it feel confrontational as she may feel hurt that her situation is affecting others. Romantic relationships are messy situations to get involved in, so do your best to not become the middleman or get in between the couple involved. If things improve in the relationship it could damage your friendship after you’ve criticised her partner or made drastic suggestions. As hard as it can be, remain as neutral as possible and simply be there for your friend. If her partner comes up a lot in conversations after this, try to subtly change the subject so that it doesn’t go down such a negative path. When we see our friends suffering in a relationship we want to be the hero and help them out of it, but the truth is, they have to help themselves first and recognise the situation. lizaboo.co.uk ^

CELEBRATE WITH A PRE-NUP!
A
Pre-Nuptial, or Pre-Marital Agreement as it can be known, does not usually feature very highly on the list of the happy couple’s wedding arrangements.
But if you are planning to marry some time soon, you could give some thought to the good sense of drawing up a Pre-Marital Agreement if either of you feels uncomfortable in any way about the prospect of an equal sharing of your assets if you did ever have to go your separate ways. This doesn’t have to put a dampener on the joyful occasion. Look at it as a form of insurance against a worse case scenario. The brutal fact is, it has to be said, that one third of marriages end in divorce so this is an insurance policy that could prove useful.
Pre-nuptial Agreements have been steadily gaining status in the family law of England and Wales over the last couple of decades. Provided an agreement is entered into freely by both parties with full knowledge of the assets involved and the implications of committing to its terms, it will take precedence over the usual principles of equal sharing on divorce applied by the courts. Pre-nups are popular with those marrying for a second time (or more!) but they are available to anyone. To ensure a pre-nup is effective,
both of you should consult your own specialist solicitor. Happy wedding bells! ^ Belinda Smith is the owner and principal of Belinda Smith and Co., Family Law solicitors based at Asset House, 27-28 ’t Thorpe Wood, Peterborough, ” PE3 6SR www.bscosolicitors.co.uk

Kerry loves gardening By Kerry Cooper
H
ello QueenBee Readers. I am delighted to be writing a gardening column for QueenBee!
My name is Kerry, I live in the heart of the Fens and I absolutely adore gardening. I have been gardening since I was six years old. I used to door-knock around the village of Empingham near Rutland Water, where I lived, with my little bucket, mini garden trowel and my gardening gloves, and weed people’s gardens. I even had a post office account in the village where I saved all my gardening money! My love of flowers has intensified over the years, leading me to grow incredible blooms, and I now transform gardens into beautiful outside spaces. I am passionate about linking gardens with emotional well-being and I believe green spaces with colour can help with depression. Growing plants is also incredibly therapeutic.
54
QueenBee Winter 2018
The aim of my blog is to help you through the seasons with gardening tips and ideas and introduce bursts of colour into your life. Traditional gardens can take years to mature and people are now sadly often too busy to develop their gardens, but fear not! If you keep the weeds at bay, introduce landscaping bark and invest in a nice selection of tubs, your garden can soon be transformed! Now we are heading for winters first frosts, it’s a good idea to start putting your garden ‘to bed’ for the long winter sleep. Start looking at plants that have ceased flowering and prune any perennials to 5cms high. Take time to also clean up any rotting plants and remove weeds. Autumn is the perfect time to fill your beds, borders, containers, window boxes, and hanging baskets with winter bedding
QueenBeemag plants. Invest in bedding plants such as winter pansies, violas, polyanthus, sweet william, stocks, forget me not, bellis, cyclamen and winter heathers - they all make wonderful additions to add colour and cheer as the rest of your garden dies down. Still regularly dead head to encourage repeat blooms; my absolute favourite is heuchera which is always a welcome addition to any border with gorgeous leaf variations. Once you’ve weeded, spread a thick layer of compost, bark chips or well-rotted manure over your borders. This is a great time for worms to work their magic, so let them! Plant evergreens to inject interest into your borders or place in decent sized tubs. Remove any bulbs or tubers from the soil and store in trays of dry compost with the top of the crown visible. You can risk leaving them underground if they live in a sheltered area but add a thick layer of mulch over the top to protect them. Another important job is looking after your garden tools. Give them a good clean and store nicely over winter. Planting bulbs such as daffodils, crocus, hyacinths, lilies and alliums should ideally be done in September and October (certainly pre-November) but tulips can be planted from November to January.

ick up any glossy magazine and you can hardly fail to notice interior design articles that feature fabulous house plants. House plants are right on trend in today’s environmentally and style conscious homes.
Foliage house plants that filter and remove household toxins and gently improve humidity:
This is brilliant news as not only do house plants improve the look of any indoor space by making it appear softer and more natural; they actively filter and improve its atmosphere.
• D ragon tree (Dracaena) Palm, like house plants that are easier to keep than palms.
During the winter months, especially when the heating is on, we know that the home atmosphere can get really dry. Not only that, but items and products we use in the home slowly release low level toxins into the home environment. This includes chemicals like formaldehyde from foam insulation, benzene from some paints and plastics and trichloroethylene from varnishes. The following commonly available flowering house plants will help to actively filter and remove these common household toxins:• Pot Chrysanths, with masses of long lasting colourful flowers.
• S pider plants (Chlorophytum) a great starter house plant with an iron constitution! • W eeping Fig, an excellent house plant that eventually gets big but not huge!
• M ould filterer Parlour Palm, the toughest of the palms and not too big! • M ould filterer Ivy in it’s many shapes, sizes and varieties which is as tough as old boots! • M other in Laws Tongue, particularly good at absorbing bath room pollutants. This information is based on actual scientific research by organisations like NSNA and others. Should you require more details, go online where there is lots more on this fascinating subject! A seasonal selection of house plants is always available at Flowers and Plants Direct in Hampton. Staff are on hand to help and advise ^
• Gerbera, brilliantly colourful and good at filtering mould spores. • Peace Lily, fabulous long lasting white flowers and one of the best chemical and mould filterers. • Flowing Christmas and Easter cacti, colourful bright flowers. • Flamingo flower (Anthurium) exotic and colourful long lasting waxy flowers.

FUNDRAISING LUNCH IN AID OF BREAST CANCER CARE RAISES RECORD BREAKING AMOUNT!
O
VER 300 businesswomen from the Peterborough area tucked into a fundraising lunch in aid of breast cancer care – making the event its most successful to date.
Carol said: “It was another fantastic turn out, and my huge thanks to everyone who supported and attended the lunch – and particularly as it resulted in a record-breaking amount raised.
Now in its fourth year, the sell-out lunch raised a record £17,100 to help provide specialist equipment for the Breast Care Unit at Peterborough City Hospital, currently not available within NHS budgets.
“My passion for fund raising for the Breast Care Unit increases as I hear of more and more women who, like me, have benefitted from the care and support they received from the fantastic team at The Breast Care Unit whilst going througha their breast cancer journey.”
This makes the total raised to date almost £50,000. The event was again organised by former breast cancer patient Carol Collier, as a way of thanking all those involved with during her care journey.
Coffers were boosted by a raffle and auction, with prizes including tickets for Brendan’s forthcoming tour; which raised £1,500.
Held at the Holiday Inn West; with champagne reception and two-course lunch; there was entertainment from guest speaker Brendan Cole, formerly from Strictly Come Dancing – sharing his tales from the dance floor - and local singer Nicole Lawrence, who had the audience dancing in the aisles. 60
Radio breakfast show presenter Kev Lawrence hosted the event, and Clare Hall from the PCH Breast Care Unit gave a talk about the work of the team, and advice on how women can look after themselves.

QueenBeefamily INTRODUCING LOCAL LADY SHANNON WHITLOCK, A PART TIME BLOGGER/WRITER/EDITOR AND FULL TIME MARRIED MUM TO 2 BOYS, HENRY AND ARCHER. HERE SHE TALKS ABOUT THE DREADED 'S' WORD IN HOME SCHOOLING... By Shannon Whitlock
Socialisation - the dreaded 's' word!
I
t’s the one word which most home educated families dread. Society seems to have this view that the only way our children will learn how to be around other people is to send them to school and they couldn’t be more wrong. My son is four and he’s never been to playgroup or nursery. When it was just the two of us, we attended groups such as baby signing but we stopped that when he was around 15 months old. He is the most outgoing and friendly child I’ve ever met. He’s learned that behaviour from us, just going about daily activities like doing the food shop.
to adapt to the workplace and interact with people of all ages so why can’t we implement that now in their school days? Home educated children aren’t hermits, far from it. They get to experience life from a different perspective, one which the classroom isn’t going to teach them. This doesn’t give them an upper hand, it just means that they can approach a situation differently. If my children ask to go to school when they’re older, then I’m willing to let them experience that for themselves. But while I can, I’d like to teach them myself and give them the knowledge which I think is important. After all, no one knows our children the way we do ^
If you look into home education, there’s > Read Shannon's blog here so much going on within the home ed www.peanutandsprout.co.uk. Find her community. Here in Peterborough, there’s on instagram @peanutandsprout a strong group who organise a lot for their children to do. As my oldest is only four, I’ve yet to take him to any because he’d have only started school in September so we’re still finding our feet. In a classroom, children interact with around 30 children all of the same age. With home education, they can socialise with children from 4-16, as well as the adults, all from different backgrounds. When they leave education, their social circle Shannon's two gorgeou s changes anyway as they learn boys, Henry and Archer

f this is true, what happens in winter with the long cold nights? Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD) was formally recognised as a condition by the National Institute of Mental Health in 1984. SAD affects about 1% to 2% of the population, particularly women and young people, while a milder form of winter blues may affect as many as 10 to 20 percent. Women are more likely to suffer from depression, anxiety and SAD and so need to take special care, but don’t forget men suffer to, so do watch out for the signs in people around you. While the exact causes of SAD are unclear, most theories attribute the disorder to the reduction of daylight hours in winter. The shorter days and reduced exposure to sunlight in winter are thought to affect the body by disrupting the normal healthy production and flow of chemicals in the body, e.g. melatonin, which is vital for a properly functioning body clock and the

neurotransmitter serotonin, which is essential for a balanced mood. A deficit may lead to depression and adversely affect your sleep, appetite, memory, and sexual desire. Also we can lack vitamin D, which is derived from sunlight. So to help keep SAD under control the best we can, we need to produce more serotonin and seek out more Vitamin D replenishing sunshine. It’s certainly a good place to start! ward-winning hairdresser Kai Wan, Director and owner at P.Kai Hair (3 salons in Peterborough, Hampton and Market Deeping) has been clocking up the miles with an impressive distance of over 1,100 miles ridden and around £6,000 raised - a huge achievement for both himself and the charities. Kai’s latest bike ride took him and his wife Jenny over 300 miles from London to Paris as part of a group who raised over £50k in total between them for Bloodwise, the blood cancer charity helping beat Leukaemia, Lymphoma, Myeloma and
Myeloproliferative Neoplasms. One of Kai’s close friends, Simon, was diagnosed with Leukaemia six years ago and was only given three years to live. Six years on and four bike rides later Simon took part in the London to Paris 2018 alongside Kai and Jenny. With the money raised Bloodwise are able to conduct more research into lifesaving drugs. Kai also donates to the British Heart Foundation, and the salons host regular fundraisers to boost their contributions ^ > visit www.pkai.co.uk or email hello@pkai.co.uk QueenBee Winter 2018

A sting in the tail by Tracy Hefferon
A Sting In The Tail
I
t’s that time of year again. You may have been preparing all year long, since the January Sales and the weeks before the Beast from the East blew across from the Vikings. Others, like me, are just starting to think about it, having been reminded it’s on its way by the likes of Holly Willoughby and David Gandy making lots of cash for M&S. Buying presents for people. You either get it wrong or you get it right. Especially if you don’t bother to tell people what you want beforehand. And let’s face it, handing over a list with your top five wants on it is not exactly gracious but unless you give a really strong hint at what you’d quite like in your stocking on the 25th of December,

be prepared for a range of emotions such as shock, anger, bemusement and confusion. Over the years I have opened many a gift that has caused all of these things. Sometimes all four at once. The gold-sprayed plastic and heavily bejeweled ‘statement’ necklace. The return tickets to Barcelona with three nights in a B&B and a guide book. As a single passenger. The obviously already-used purse. The bottle of nail polish remover. The floor length, halter neck, zebra print evening dress. The book on homemade sausage making. I could go on… For. Literally. EVER. Because I have had so many gifting letdowns over the years, I’d rather not receive anything. If I am asked what I’d like, I’ll quite happily answer. But if a surprise is in store, I am already making a mental note to list said gift on eBay come Boxing Day as I pull the beautifully-wrapped package from beneath the Christmas tree. I say sod being gracious and hand out those want lists! As early as Easter if needs be. Make sure everyone in your household knows you love Chanel No5, how much you need new pyjamas and your Boden boots are wearing out a bit. Drop hints like there’s no tomorrow. And if disappointment hits on Christmas morning, make sure you’ve wrapped up a little pressie from you to you. Because nobody knows you as well as you do. And you deserve it. Merry Christmas! ^
