Breginjski kot is an integral part of the cultural area of Beneška (Venetian) Slovenia. The most important legacy of the region is its ethnological monuments, particularly the remnants of a remarkable heritage in environmental design and architecture, which was, to a large degree, unfortunately destroyed by an earthquake in 1976. Part of this heritage, representing an exceptional symbiosis of human and nature, is preserved in Breginj’s local museum. Popular destinations with visitors are Napoleon Bridge across the Nadiža River and the “black” (open fire) kitchen in Robidišče, which is considered the westernmost Slovenian settlement.

The indisputable jewel of the area is the Nadiža River, which is pleasantly warm in summer and which, according to the opinion of numerous visitors, also possesses healing properties.

Kobarid is a small and amiable little town, which is situated at the historic crossroads of important routes running through Posočje (Soča Valley) towards Furlanija (Friuli). Our section on Kobarid includes the Trnovo ob Soči kayak centre along the most striking part of the Soča River (for all admirers of fast rapids and wild waters), as well as the mountain ridges of Kolovrat and Matajur, which border on neighbouring Italy. Numerous archaeological sites – an Iron Age burial ground and findings from antiquity – bear witness to the rich life and strategic importance of this town in ancient times. Perhaps the greatest event imprinted on the history of Kobarid took place during World War I, when during the 12th Soška Battle Austrian troops, supported by Germans, successfully broke through the front lines. The story recounting the town’s history and, in particular, events related to the Soška Front, are presented in the Kobarid Museum, voted Best European Museum for the year 1993. Kobarid prides itself on a rich and vast number of monuments. One of the most ancient is the important late antiquity settlement of Tonovcov grad (castle). The town has also many charming sacral buildings, whereas among those more recent there once again prevail monuments from WWI. The church of St. Anthony and the Italian ossuary – the resting place of over 7,000 soldiers, as well as the Kobarid Museum are the most frequently visited sights in the town. A New library, the town’s cultural centre, the Marsa Gallery and Fundation's info centre (Fundacija Poti miru v Posočju) with conference and exhibition facilities further contribute to the town’s rich cultural rhythm.

Its primary mission is to preserve the memory of numerous casualties of the First World War and to promote the culture of peace. It founded a historical library in Kobarid, a WWI archive with a register of fallen soldiers, the Information Centre, and set up conference and exhibition facilities. The Foundation created the Walk of Peace, a historical route of approximately 100 kilometres that connects the major remnants of the Isonzo Front and the natural attractions of the upper Soča Region (Zgornje Posočje). Six outdoor museums (Ravelnik, Čelo, Zaprikraj, Kolovrat, Mrzli Vrh, Mengore) are among the most important points along the Walk of Peace. These museums were created in authentic locations of the AustrianHungarian and Italian frontlines where the historic remains are more abundant and accessible. Specialised tour guides for the Walk of Peace, tourist and scientific literature, free Internet access, and souvenirs are available at the Foundation's Information Centre.
Kobarid Museum displays exhibits on the events that occurred during World War I on the Soška fronta - Isonzo Front. It covers two and a half years of static fighting and portrays in detail the 12th Isonzo battle, also known as the Caporetto breakthrough. The latter is one of the major battles in the history of mankind having taken place in hilly terrain. The exhibits - giant reliefs of the surrounding mountains, a wealth of photographs, and an audiovisual presentation - tell with sensitivity the tale of the difficult and bloody times near the Soča River. The described events are related to the adventures and memories of celebrities, among whom are Ernest Hemingway and Erwin Rommel. Kobarid Museum has received the highest national award, was proclaimed Best European Museum, and won the Council of Europe Museum Prize in 1993. location: the old centre of Kobarid kobarid historical walk connects important historical curiosities and natural beauty in the vicinity of Kobarid, and which complements the museum story. The visit takes three to four hours, during which time the history is depicted from antiquity to World War I, offering at the same time the many natural sights of the Soča Gorge and its mysterious falls.

ravines and gorges: The entire course of the Soča River that runs across the Kobarid area – which includes the Trnovo and Kobarid ravines, and which ends with the attractive Napoleon Bridge – is in its entirety a grand natural monument. Not so well known, but similarly beautiful, is the gorge of the Nadiža River. waterfalls: The most famous waterfall in the Kobarid region is Kozjak, but even more magnificent, yet not so easily accessible, is the waterfall in the gorge of the rivulet Ročica. the kobarid historical walk: The obligatory tour for all of Kobarid’s visitors links together natural sights (Soča River, Kozjak waterfall) and historic monuments (Kobarid Museum, Italian ossuary, Tonovcov castle, WWI remnants). walks along the soča river: A pleasant stroll along the Soča may be enjoyed below Kobarid or along well-tended pathways beside the site of international competitions at Trnovo ob Soči. matajur: a popular mountaineering tour for visitors from both sides of the border. The starting point is at Livek. kolovrat: An exceptional panoramic tour straddles the mountainous ridge separating Slovenia and Italy. On one side we are enraptured by the view over the Julian Alps, while on the other our look glides far away across the Veneto region, the Po Valley, and the Adriatic Sea. The whole tour may also be done by car or bicycle. The walk of peace: a visit to numerous restored WWI remnants; we recommend the use of a guide and a thematic trail map.

Villages under Mt. Krn may be divided into two areas: the area of Drežnica below Mt. Krn’s western rock wall, and the area of the villages of Krn and Vrsno beneath the southern slopes of this majestic mountain.

World War I also touched the villages under Mt. Krn. One may come across the remnants of defence lines and fortifications with virtually every step throughout the surrounding mountainous countryside, particularly at the outdoor museum Zaprikraj. In fact, the majority of current mountain pathways run along the supply routes, which the warring factions were constructing to reach their respective front lines.

The most widely known cultural artefacts of the region are the unique Drežnica Masks made of wood. Locals still follow tradition and organize carnival festivities, which faithfully recreate the masks’ ancient usage. The village of Drežnica also prides itself on quite a few private collections, among which is the most attractive Botognice Collection, compiled by Mirko Kurinčič and dedicated to World War I. Worth visiting for its appeal is the native house of the well-known historian Simon Rutar, situated in the village of Krn, whereas in the village of Vrsno the greatest magnet for the majority of visitors proves to be the birthplace of celebrated Slovenian poet Simon Gregorčič (the “Gorica Nightingale”).

mt. krn (2244 m): The ascent to this high peak represents a serious, all-day mountaineering tour. There are several routes, the most charming of which passes Lake Lužnica, whereas the most challenging one runs along the “feratta” through the middle of Krn’s western wall. krasji peak (1773 m): This delightful and undemanding tour stretches between the Zaprikraj hill and a marvellous belvedere high above the Soča River.

The house in which the poet Simon Gregorčič was born in 1844 is a unique ethnological monument, depicting the architecture and culture of the inhabitants of the village of Vrsno during the poet’s lifetime. The exhibition featuring many personal items of the poet is dedicated to his life and work, his generation, and his peers. location: the centre of Vrsno.

Tolmin deScrIPTION ANd LOcATION
Tolmin, the town that gave the name to the entire region, is the largest settlement in Zgornje Posočje (Upper Soča Valley) as well as the economic, cultural and administrative centre of the valley. Its streets and houses bask in sunlight on a terrace above the confluence of Soča and Tolminka rivers. It is positioned at the right distance from the steep mountainous valleys, so that inhabitants may enjoy mild winters, and from the sea and Gorica plateau, so that they may take pleasure in enjoyable summers. This section includes the area of valleys and mountain villages above Tolminka and Zadlaščica, and continues through the hinterland of Volče and Čiginj all the way to the state border on Kolovrat.

The Tolminsko region has a historical reputation of being a rebellious land. Medieval documents testify to a long series of uprisings, culminating in the Tolmin peasant revolt of 1713. That particular insurgence spread from the Tolminska to Goriška region, Brda and further on to northern Istria. The uprising was mercilessly crushed by the imperial army and its eleven leaders were beheaded. During the World War I, Tolmin served as a base for the victorious breach of the Soča Front. The history of the town and its wider area is picturesquely presented in the Tolmin museum.

Tolmin’s special features are its old town centre, a modern sports park and thousand year old castle ruins at Kozlov Rob. Throughout the region one may come across a multitude of vestiges from the World War I. The most beautiful monument from that time is undoubtedly the church of the Holy Spirit at Javorca , which was built on a superb location above the Polog shepherds outpost in the Tolminka valley by Austro-Hungarian soldiers to commemorate their deceased comrades. The museum, library, schools and the town’s open spaces provide venues for a variety of events, exhibitions and presentations all year round. Tolminska proves also a popular destination with Slovene and foreign artists.

the museum is based in the 17th century Coronini Mansion in the centre of Tolmin. It houses a rich ethnological and arheological collection. The attractive display on life in the Tolminsko region includes a presentation of the rich local history and life through the ages in the area as well as the struggles for justice, the most important of them being the Tolmin peasant uprising of 1713. On prior arrangement, the curators of the museum organise guided tours for groups to cultural monuments in the immediate surroundings of Tolmin, such as the German Ossuary, the church of the Holy Spirit in Javorca and the Most na SoÄ?i archaeological site. The museum includes a wedding hall, a gallery with regular exhibitions and a museum shop. location: the centre of Tolmin.

ravines and gorges: The most famous are Tolmin gorges, the Tolminka and Zadlaščica basins at the entrance to the Triglav National Park, which are also its lowest point (180 m). A special feature of the Tolminka basins is a thermal spring at the end of the path. waterfalls: The region boasts several record-holders (Brinta Waterfall 104 m, Gregorčič Waterfall 88 m) and several smaller but no less ravishing jewels hidden in the ravines of the Mrzli Potok, Pščak and Sopotnica. Since the access to majority of waterfalls is fairly difficult, you are strongly recommended to hire a guide. caves: Although caves in the area are not equipped for massive tourist visits, many of them can still be visited under the guidance of experienced cavers.

Exceptional archaeological finds – more than 7000 grave sites discovered so far – rank this location among one of the most important prehistoric settlements in the Europe. Rich finds date back in the period from the late Bronze Age to the Roman period. Most of them originate from the Iron Age community, which was named after our settlement as the “Sveta Lucija Culture”. The finds are on display in the museums of Vienna, Trieste and Tolmin, but archaeologists of the newly founded Tolmin Museum still come up with new, stunning finds.

The restored and protected remains of a Roman house are located in Most na Soči. Another monument from the town’s long history is the church of St. Maurus. The first written record of the church dates from 1192. Another interesting site is a monument to soldiers from the World War I at Postaja. The birth place of the writer Ciril Kosmač is a part of the Genius Loci European programme which connects birth places of famous artists: Giotto, Goya, Lorca, Novalis and Kosmač.

The principal natural adornment of Most na Soči is its lake. Although artificial, it is of the same unique colour as mysterious Soča. To the town it bestows an atmosphere of tranquillity and softness and offers plenty of opportunities for recreation. A feature of geological interest is flat limestone layers at Pod Ključem.

Most na Soči is located on a rocky crest above the confluence of Soča and Idrijca rivers. In the past these two riverbeds, deeply carved into the rocky slopes, provided the settlement with excellent protection from intruders. Due to the nearby Doblar Hydro Plant, the basins of the river were entirely inundated and below the settlement the vast accumulation lake was formed, which now attracts both fishermen and visitors, who can stroll along well-kept, panoramic and none too demanding paths.

In Baška grapa we come across a variety of significant sacral monuments. The unique and distinctive architectural and historic monument of the valley is a railway line, which was constructed in 1906.

The peaks above Baška grapa are a paradise for botanists and other lovers of mountain flora. Exceptionally diverse and luxurious vegetation flourishes here at the juncture of the Alpine and Mediterranean climates. Particularly famous is the lime tree in Rut, with a trunk some eight meters in circumference, which has been pronounced the widest tree in the country.

A peculiar part of the history of Baška grapa was the arrival of Tirolese immigrants to villages (Rut and Stržišče) below the mountain ridges of Rodica and Črna prst in the beginning of the 14th century.

Logaršče, Rut, Stržišče, and Zakojca are all delightful, tiny villages “sunbathing” on terraces high above the valley, which offer stunning, panoramic views. waterfall sopota: A tended pathway leads to the impressive 66-meter high waterfall above Podmelec. pathway along the old border: A well-tended, circular pathway from Podbrdo to the surrounding peaks and back to the valley provides, in varying levels of difficulty, a wonderful excursion, a visit fortifications along the former national border and giving breathtaking views.

Šentviška planota offers a variety of ethnological monuments, examples of folk architecture, and frescoes. The Church of Saint Mary in Ponikve is a masterpiece of architect Jožef Plečnik, who succeeded in combining elements of the former church, which was burnt down during the war, with contemporary solutions, realising an exhilarating new structure.

On the outskirts of Šentviška planota one may explore some attractive karst caves. Visitors will also enjoy the picturesque gorge of the Kostanjevec brook, while the most well known sight is the periodic lake in the middle of the village of Ponikve.

circular pathway on šentviška planota: The best way of exploring the sights of the plateau is to take the circular tour along marked pathways, which may be covered on foot or done with mountain bike. pod skalo (under the rock): A marked and tended pathway from the village of Daber runs to a restored water mill and sawmill. črvov vrh: At 974 meters above sea level, this is the highest elevation of the plateau and a remarkable belvedere. The entire area of Trebuša is a place of tiny settlements and isolated, solitary farms scattered across an almost primeval world. The region’s most interesting historical period was that of glass making. An abundance of timber and flint sand enabled the development of glažutas (glass works), which both thrived and waned during the 18th century.

Trebuša is a large, natural park-like area inviting exploration. It is a land of forests and gorges full of pools and waterfalls. An extraordinary feature of Trebuša is its sulphur spring, which may be found just beside the Trebuščica river.

čepovanska valley: From Dolenja Trebuša, travel along the macadam road over the Drnulk pass into the Čepovanska Valley and back to Most na Soči. pršjak: The starting point for this tour is the guesthouse Makuc in Krtovše. A well-tended pathway along the Trebuša gorges leads us to the marvellous Sopota waterfall. gačnik: a natural monument. The first three waterfalls of this remarkable and well-known gorge may be observed from just below the Brdar farm. The gorge continues through a wild, dangerous, and very demanding terrain without any tended pathways, and visitors are encouraged to hire an experienced, local guide.

Water sports For lovers of wild and fast rapids, the Soča River is one of the most desired destinations in all of Europe. The section of the Soča running through our region offers practically everything: rafters will gather at Trnovo ob Soči; kayakers will love the section of between the Otona pool and Kobarid; and families, schoolchildren, and beginners will prefer the smooth flow between the gravel sections from Kobarid to Tolmin. The best conditions for hydrospeed are found in Kobariška soteska (Kobarid Gorge). canyoning under the guidance of experienced local guides is allowed on the Pršjak stream. The lake itself, however, is hardly popular with bathers, who during hot summer days prefer to enjoy themselves along the banks and gravel sections of rivers: Podbela and Kred by the Nadiža River, pebble banks from Kobarid to Tolmin on the Soča River, and Slap ob Idrijci and Bača pri Modreju on the Idrijca River.

Cycling The Land of Living Water is situated at the juncture of Mediterranean, Dinaric and Alpine worlds. The exceptionally dynamic terrain and numerous mountain and forest roads and cart tracks give plenty of opportunity for mountain biking. Less demanding visitors will be fully gratified by biking along gentler roads that interconnect villages in the valley. One may find 27 attractive pathways marked on the local map, yet any mountain-biker with at least a tiny amount of exploring spirit will find much more of them on his or her own.
Fishing Fishing is the most popular tourist activity in the region; the local fishing association manages over 145 km of waterways, with navigation allowed only on the soča. All other rivers - nadiža, tolminka, bača, kneža, koritnica, idrijca and trebuščica - are reserved exclusively for anglers. Each river has its own unique and interesting character, enabling anglers to find at least one river for fishing even in less-thanfavourable weather. Among the diverse population of fish, trout are prevalent, with the soča trout the most well known along with a sub-type called lipan. Only fly-fishing is allowed.

Hiking The wonderful natural environment is perfectly suited to all visitors. There are many tended pathways along lakes and rivers, as well as tended access to waterfalls and gorges. A visit to any site mentioned in the brochure can be combined with a walking or trekking tour. Visitors can ramble through forests and gorges, or climb higher to mountain villages situated above the valleys; more demanding trekkers may set out on serious tours between mt. krn and črna prst. All over the mountains are many huts providing refreshment and refuge in case of unfavourable weather. There are also a number of thematic pathways: the kobarid historical walk; the cultural and historical trail of most na soči, the kosmač‘s educational path along the idrijca river; Old border trail above Podbrdo or past the remains of the Isonzo Front, connected into the Walk of Peace.

leading to the village of porezen. Nearby, there is another climbing site lutne skale in bukovska grapa in the Cerkno region. The difficulty level varies from easy to 8a. Climbing routes in the mountains of tolminski migovec and particularly at novi vrh are in their characteristics closer to sport climbing than to the alpine one: easy access, warm south-facing rock walls and short routes (up to 150 m) offer enjoyable adventures, which could hardly be compared to severe conditions on vast north-facing walls.

Explorers of the underground world will find many interesting sites with the potential for everything from leisurely tourist excursions to more demanding expeditions. In zadlaška cave, the Renaissance poet Dante Alighieri supposedly found inspiration for the terrifying images of his Inferno. pološka cave is demanding, 700 m deep, classic mountainous system with two entrances. smoganica is a kilometre-long water cave, a site where the remains of a cave bear were discovered, while in World War I it served as the place for the ammunition storage. mig system is a very demanding complex of cave passages and pits in the total length of 12 kilometres and reaching the depth of 970 m, accessible only to experienced and well-equipped cavers. It is recommended to get all additional information at the local cavers’ club.

Paragliding in the Land of Living Water is a fairly new sport, which due to exceptionally favourable conditions has developed quickly. We have three main take-off sites in the region: stol above breginj (1000 m), kuk above livek (1248 m), and kobala above tolmin (1080 m), with two landing sites, kobarid (234 m) and tolmin (200 m). All of the take-off sites are accessible by car. Paragliding is permitted up to a height of 2900 m above sea level; favourable thermal conditions enable XC flights in the direction of Italy, Bovec, or Bohinj. The high quality of the area has been proven during the last three years, as Tolmin has played host to national championships, the World Championship, and a European Cup competition.
Fitness facilities for sportspersons and teams Facilities are available in both kobarid and tolmin. Kobarid is more suited to basketball players, whereas Tolmin, with its sports park brajda (athletics stadium, central and supplementary football pitches, outdoor basketball courts, handball, tennis courts and a sand volleyball court, large sport hall) is suited to everyone, especially footballers. A significant advantage of the sports centre is the vicinity of the town centre, restaurants and accommodation facilities on the one hand while on the other side - along the river banks of the SoÄ?a and Tolminka there are opportunities for jogging through the countryside. The well-tended park close to the sports centre attract numerous strollers as well. tolmin
