The Triglav rose

IN THE KINGDOM OF ZLATOROG Anyone wishing to catch a great view of Slovenia – from its highest mountains to the Adriatic Sea – should visit Triglav. This mountain, towering to a height of 2,864 metres, bears the name of the Old Slavic deity that held power over the sky, the earth and the underworld. Within the Triglav National Park, together with the mythical Zlatorog, it protects the natural wealth of Slovenia, the first country in the world to be declared a green destination by the international Green Destinations organisation. Triglav is the highest peak in the Julian Alps, a mountain range which covers an area of 4,400 km2 and straddles the border between Slovenia and Italy. More than three quarters of the range lies in Slovenia, including more than 150 peaks over two thousand metres. The beauty of the Alpine highlands extends above the valleys of the rivers Soča, Sava Dolinka and Sava Bohinjka and includes Lake Bohinj and Lake Bled, forested hills and lowland pastures, stunning mountain passes, the famous Bohinj Railway and other unique features of the area. These places of outstanding natural beauty and remarkable cultural heritage constitute the first UNESCO biosphere in Slovenia. Lonely Planet has included the easily accessible Slovenian Julian Alps among its “Best in Travel 2018” destinations.

Bled, the charming lake with an island in the middle, is a cosmopolitan tourist town guarded by a castle perched high on a cliff, and has exceptional history as well as numerous events throughout the year. Bohinj, a town by a massive glacial lake in Triglav National Park, charms visitors with its traditional Alpine Flowers Festival and traditional dairy farms. The Soča Valley, dotted by the towns of Tolmin, Kobarid and Bovec, is interlaced with monuments to World War One, the paths of peace, and outdoor museums, and it is also known

The Julian Alps are a great venue for foodies as well. In Kobarid you will find Ana Roš, named the World’s Best Female Chef of 2017 by The World’s 50 Best Restaurants organisation, who amazes her guests with her culinary ingenuity. In Kobarid and elsewhere in the Julian Alps, hungry travellers can enjoy authentic natural ingredients, cheese and other dairy farm delicacies and traditional dishes. To wash it down you can enjoy world-renowned wines from nearby Goriška Brda. For the icing on the cake,

This land of a thousand natural, cultural and other genuine specialities develops tourism according to sustainable principles. Here you can choose environmentally friendly forms of mobility and accommodation. If you decide to go for a hike, stick to the marked paths. For Slovenes, the Triglav National Park is a supreme example of natural and cultural heritage. It is also one of the oldest national parks in Europe. Not only that, it is a gallery of uncommonly beautiful images, an open-air museum and a refuge for restless spirits seeking harmony with themselves in harmony with nature. The excellence and professionalism of the enthusiasts who run the park conserve for us the originality of nature and the cultural landscape and ensure the co-existence of nature and modern man.

The Triglav National Park is the pride of the Julian Alps and the only national park in Slovenia. The park was conceived in as long ago as 1906 and originally centred on the area of the Triglav lakes. In 1981 the park was enlarged. It now covers practically the whole of the Julian Alps in Slovenia and measures 840 square kilometres. The highest point of the park is the peak of Mt Triglav (2864 metres), the highest mountain in Slovenia, from which the park takes its name; the lowest point is in the Tolmin Gorges (180 metres). The unique natural and cultural heritage of this area of Slovenia is fully contained within the borders of the Triglav National Park. The national park is divided into three conservation areas. In the core area, which consists of the first and second conservation areas, nature conservation takes priority. The third conservation area, in which people live and work, is designed to protect the cultural landscape and encourage sustainable husbandry and characteristic local activities.

JULIAN ALPS UNESCO BIOSPHERE RESERVE In 2003 the Julian Alps UNESCO Biosphere Reserve was established in the Triglav National Park and the wider Julian Alps area. Biosphere reserves are protected under UNESCO’s Man and the Biosphere (MAB) programme. Today more than 500 biosphere reserves in more than 100 countries around the world represent a model of management for the conservation of biodiversity, improvement of life quality and the maintenance of socially, economically and culturally conditioned circumstances that ensure environmentally friendly development. The importance of biosphere reserves lies above all in the fact that they offer an answer to one of the most important questions of the present age: how to reconcile the conservation of biological and landscape diversity and natural resources with sustainable development. The creation of the Julian Alps UNESCO Biosphere Reserve is not only a prestigious recognition but a responsibility and an opportunity to invite people into a world of unique and unrepeatable natural beauty, breathtaking landscapes and cultural heritage below Mount Triglav!

NATURAL SIGHTS The Boka Waterfall

That which nature has created and which awakens the noblest sentiments in visitors must be respected and conserved. Slovenia and the Slovenes have been richly blessed with natural wonders. The Julian Alps and the Triglav National Park are one big natural heritage site. It would be impossible to list all the natural wonders they contain. Many are hidden in difficult-to-reach areas of the mountains. We shall therefore list only the most popular sights, which draw hosts of visitors every year. In the Soča Valley this means the river Soča, in particular its source and its wild gorges, the Boka and Kozjak waterfalls and the Tolmin Gorges. In Bohinj the first thing we notice is the lake. Most visitors trek up to the Savica Waterfall, and nearly as many take a walk along the wonderful gorges of the Mostnica. Lake Bled has long been a recognised symbol of Slovenia. Vintgar Gorge is another of the best known natural sights. A magnificent panoramic view of the mountains of the Martuljek group can be admired from the village of Gozd Martuljek, which is also the starting point for a fantastic hike past the Peričnik Waterfall to the foot of Triglav’s north face.

HIKING When you lace your boots up tight and close the door behind you, that is when you start to live your real life. It is the journey that is important, not the destination. Whether you are crunching snow beneath your feet, tramping through autumn leaves of wonderful colours or listening to the trilling of birds in summer. The Julian Alps offer an infinite range of hiking opportunities. From paths leading to natural sights of interest and gentle strolls in the valleys, to wanders in the Alpine foothills and demanding ascents into the high mountains. Walks of two to four hours separate the many climbers’ huts and refuges dotted across the region. Good-quality maps cover the entire area. Every part of the Julian Alps offers its own special features. In the Soča Valley, the most beautiful paths are those along rivers and streams or leading to waterfalls. In the Kranjska Gora area, there are wonderful excursions to the Alpine valleys cut deep between the mountain peaks. Bled and Bohinj offer relaxing lakeside strolls, while in the area around Radovljica tracks and paths lead to ruined castles and hilltop churches offering breathtaking views. Brda is ideal for active holidays all year round, with circular hiking trails winding through the vineyards, orchards and olive groves, as well as the long-distance Alpe Adria Trail.

Ice climbing

A good grip, harmony of movements, never exceeding your capabilities but moving acrobatically on the border of daring. The profundity of living makes sense when you are standing on a mountain peak. Winter or summer, it is the weather and a courageous heart that will determine your victories. Climbing nursery, Bohinj

The Julian Alps may not reach great heights but in terms of the dimensions of their rock faces they are the equal of other European mountains over four thousand metres high. Travnik, Špik, Triglav and Mangart are the best known peaks, with faces rising 800 to 1,000 metres towards the sky. Triglav’s famous North Wall – 3 kilometres wide and 1,200 metres high – is the third-largest rock face in Europe. There are thousands of routes to try. Together they present an eternal challenge to all those with enough knowledge and courage to tackle them. Down in the valleys, near the main tourist areas, sports climbers can choose from more than 30 fully equipped climbing centres. These are mainly concentrated in Bohinjska Bela, Bohinj and the Soča Valley. Winter ascents into the mountains are of course the province of the best climbers. Many more visitors head for the frozen waterfalls which can be found in every Alpine valley. The best known areas for this type of climbing are Log pod Mangartom near Bovec and the Tamar Valley near Rateče. An ice climbing centre in Mojstrana organises climbs in the Mlačca Gorge every winter.

We came from the water and to the water we will return. The possibility of fun or adventure on the water is open to everyone. Whether it is a rushing river or a tranquil Alpine lake, foaming rapids or the limpid calm of a smooth surface, returning to the water is an infinite happiness. The waters of the Julian Alps can be the object of enchanted wonder or the source of a vast range of activities. The simplest way to discover them can be walks along the banks of streams, rivers and lakes. All three lakes - Lake Bled, Lake Bohinj and the reservoir at Most na Soči - offer easy boating or organised boat trips, either in a characteristic Bled “pletna” or aboard one of the tourist vessels at Bohinj or Most na Soči. In terms of competitive sport, Bled is famous for producing world-class rowers and as a world championship rowing venue, Bohinj hosts an Ironman triathlon and the Soča is a venue for major international kayaking events. In terms of modern adrenaline sports, the wild beauty that is the river Soča is undoubtedly the best known venue in Slovenia. Every year tens of thousands of visitors enjoy an unforgettable experience with rafts, canoes or hydrospeeds. These activities are also popular on the river Sava. The many interesting ravines and gorges across the area offer plenty of opportunities for canyoning. Agencies offering qualified guides and instructors and high-quality equipment for water sports and other outdoor activities can be found in many locations throughout the Julian Alps.

CYCLING Like the whirling wheels of time, now slow, now fast. Exploring the wonderful Julian Alps by bicycle is a way to understand the value and meaning of time. Cycling is undoubtedly one of the most suitable ways to travel through the Julian Alps. Maps showing cycle routes are available in every tourism centre. Just as with hiking, the options available to

cyclists include both easy and pleasant family tours and the most difficult mountain ascents and descents. The two best cycling destinations are Kranjska Gora and Bohinj. The best way to explore the Julian Alps along the route that crosses Slovenia from north to south or on a circular road tour round the Triglav National Park is by mountain bike.

Cycling through the So훾a Valley

FISHING From the riverbank or in waders in the middle of a stream, with patience and passion we await the duel. Fishing is simultaneously a sport and an art. The wise give life back to nature. It is a question of balance! Fishing is one of the elite tourist disciplines of the area. The So훾a, the Lepenjica, the Idrijca, the Ba훾a, the Sava, Lake Bohinj, the Radovna and a wealth of smaller streams offer over 200 kilometres of prime fishing waters. Fly-fishing, spinning and float fishing are permitted. The most common fish are trout and grayling. The marble trout, endemic to the river basins of the northern Mediterranean, is particularly famous. Fishing waters are carefully managed by angling clubs in Tolmin, Bohinj, Bled, Jesenice, Radovljica and by the Fisheries Research Institute in Ljubljana. A Fly-Fishing Festival is held in Bohinj every autumn.

FLYING Paragliding

Flying has been a desire of humankind since time immemorial. To admire the birds and use our ingenuity to imitate them. Safe in the passenger seat of a light aircraft, between the cords of a parachute, beneath the wing of a hang-glider. There are two sports airfields in the Julian Alps, one in Lesce (near Radovljica) and the other in Bovec. Both are ideal starting points for tourist flights and glider flights over the Alpine peaks, although the Bovec airfield is more challenging and less well

equipped. Every year the Lesce airfield hosts a parachute World Cup competition in accuracy landing. The airfield also hosts an international aeromodelling event. In the Bohinj, Soča Valley and Kranjska Gora areas there are a series of launch points for hang-gliders and paragliders. The best-known launch points are Kobala above Tolmin and Stol above Kobarid, both popular venues for national competitions and European Cup and World Cup events.

GOLF Bovec golf course

Play a round of golf against a backdrop of snow-capped mountains or trees in blossom. The Julian Alps boast a 27-hole golf course in Bled. One of the most beautiful courses in Europe, it is just two kilometres from the Lesce airfield. Bovec’s golf course lies below the picturesque Kanin range and the magical land of Narnia where Disney filmed the second instalment of the Chronicles of Narnia saga. The nine-hole course hosts an annual Ski & Golf event that even includes a golf match on the snow. Other golf courses within a radius of 50 kilometres can be found at Volčji Potok (Ljubljana), Tarvisio (just across the border in Italy) and by the lakes of Austrian Carinthia. There are also driving ranges at Kranjska Gora and Bovec.

CUISINE Every town and village in the Julian Alps has its own culinary speciality. Whether prepared to traditional recipes in local hostelries or transformed into superlative gourmet creations by top chefs in the finest restaurants. Tolmin, Bovec and Bohinj cheese, štruklji (boiled strudel) from Kobarid, zaseka (minced lard) from Bohinj, local honey, the famous Bled cream slice... these are the gastronomic trademarks of the Julian Alps. The old traditions are maintained by small inns, guest houses and family-run restaurants, while more recently some of the larger hotels have begun to rediscover them too. Local ingredients prepared in modern ways enrich daily menus and add a special flavour to conferences and formal occasions. On the Gorenjska side of the Julian Alps, Radovljica and the surrounding area offer traditional local restaurants and the “Taste Radol’ca” initiative, where local honey is among the ingredients used in the dishes of

the area. On the other side of the mountains, in the Soča Valley, the local cusine has gained a worldwide reputation thanks to Ana Roš – a star of the Netflix series Chef’s Table who in 2017 was proclaimed the best female chef on the planet. Brda offers Mediterranean dishes made with local ingredients, top-quality olive oil and Ribolla/Rebula wine, which is native to the area. Bohinj has Mohant, a spreadable cheese with PDO (protected designation of origin) status, and the famous Bohinj cheese. In spring local restaurants offer dishes made using edible wild plants. In autumn they offer home-made specialities made from locally produced ingredients. The Bohinjsko/ from Bohinj certificate is a guarantee of high quality and geographical origin. And don’t forget to try the delicious cream slice and other specialities of Bled, under the “Taste Bled” banner.

Triglav National Park Centre, Bohinj

Bohinj ECO Hotel

Bled is without a doubt the most important MICE (meetings, incentives, conventions and events) destination in the Julian Alps. Besides a wonderful natural setting and a thousand years of history, tradition and hospitality, Bled’s advantages as a MICE destination include modern infrastructure, more than 6,000 beds (including 650 in superior category hotels: Grand Hotel Toplice, Hotel Golf, Hotel Park, Best Western Premier Hotel Lovec, Hotel Kompas and Vila Bled), locations for gala events such as Bled Castle and Bled Island, and a Festival Hall that can host events for up to 500 participants. The Lambergh Chateau & Hotel near Radovljica hosts smaller conferences and seminars. Next come Kranjska

Gora with the Hotel Kompas, Ramada Resort Kranjska Gora, Best Western Hotel Kranjska Gora and Hotel Špik, and Bohinj, which is developing into a MICE destination with a commitment to sustainable development. Excellent examples of this are the Bohinj ECO Hotel, the only hotel in Slovenia to hold the international Green Globe certificate, the smaller Jezero, Kristal and Tripič hotels, and the Triglav National Park Centre Bohinj. The Soča Valley (Kekčeva Domačija, TNP information centre in Trenta, Pristava Lepena, conference facilities at Stergulčeva Hiša, Hotel Hvala, Hiša Franko, Blue House, Zlata Ribica) is an ideal destination for small teams of professionals and outdoor themes. The Hotel Cubo Bovec, due to open in 2018, will also offer opportunities for bigger and more complex MICE events. Villa Vipolže, a renovated Renaissance villa in Brda with modern furnishings and equipment, is a wonderful venue for conferences, seminars and other events.

HISTORY, CULTURE, FOLK TRADITIONS Where are we from, who are we and where are we bound? Cultural events enrich the visitor in a unique way. They affect the soul in a different way from beautiful countryside, a good day out, a bold adventure. You have to know the history of your country in order to be successful in the future. At every step we encounter cultural heritage created over centuries.

Neanderthal flute

So stop and marvel. The cultural landscape has marked the character of the population. The Julian Alps are a natural and cultural monument. The area’s most famous jewels are Bled Castle on its cliff above the lake, the medieval town centre of Radovljica with its imposing baroque mansion, Kamen Castle in Begunje, the mighty fortress of Kluže above the wild gorge of the Koritnica, Kobarid Museum with its account of the bloody Soča (Isonzo) Front and Tolmin Museum, the archaeological centre of western Slovenia. Other attractions include Dobrovo, a Renaissance castle, and the Klet Brda winery, incorporating a viticulture and winemaking museum. The information centres of the Triglav National Park – Triglav Rose in Bled, Dom Trenta and the TNP Centre Bohinj – are well worth a visit. Past and present meet in the Slovenian Alpine Museum in Mojstrana. A rich collection of museum pieces with a varied

and colourful history, a great diversity of photographic and archive material and an extensive specialist library offer the visitor an insight into the scale and importance of mountaineering activities in Slovenia. There are many famous churches, among them the basilica dedicated to Mary, Help of Christians in Brezje, the church of St John the Baptist by Lake Bohinj, the church of the Assumption on Bled Island, the church of the Holy Spirit on Javorca, a hill overlooking the valley of the Tolminka, and the Russian chapel below Vršič pass. The Liznjek farmhouse in Kranjska Gora, Pocar Farm in Zgornja Radovna, the Kajžnk House in Rateče, the Brda House in Šmartno, Museum of Apiculture in Radovljica, the Iron Forging Museum in Kropa, the Alpine dairy farming museum and the Oplen House in Bohinj, the Alpine pastures high in the mountains, the Bovec house, the architecture of Breginj or the famous Studor hayracks are wonderful examples of folk know-how and tradition.

TRADITIONAL EVENTS Events both big and small bring together local cuisine, crafts, music and of course the local people. There are many traditional events that recall daily life in the Alpine region in days gone by, such as the Cow Ball and the Village Serenade, Village Day in Rateče, the Country Wedding in Bohinj, the medieval market in Radovljica, St George’s Fair in Gorje and the Daffodil Festival in Jesenice. Memories are also evoked by the traditional gathering at the Russian chapel below Vršič pass. The chapel was built in 1916 in

memory of Russian prisoners of war. Each of the lakes – Lake Bled, Lake Bohinj and the reservoir at Most na Soči – has its own glittering summer night full of entertainment, lights and fireworks. Reflecting the development of sustainable tourism in Bohinj are the Green Weekend and the International Wildflower Festival. The Festival of Hiking and Fishing reflects the ideal conditions for these activities in the area. The Soča Valley also hosts an annual Hiking Festival in the autumn. In spring you can take part in the Hiking Festival in Brda, enjoy sweet cherries at the Cherry Festival or sample the young wines at one of the many St Martin’s Day celebrations. A special place of honour in the Alpine scene belongs to popular folk music, with the famous ensemble of the Avsenik brothers at the forefront. There are also many other musical events: the Radovljica Festival, the Bled Festival, the Okarina world music festival, Potato Night in

Bovec, MetalDays and other music festivals at the confluence of the Soča and the Tolminka, the Bohinj Summer Music Festival, open-air concerts in Radovljica, the November Hit Parade in Bled (Oberkrainerfest), and outdoor parties during the FIS World Cup events in Kranjska Gora and Planica. The only chocolate festival in Slovenia is the Radovljica Chocolate Festival. Towns and villages come alive in winter with Christmas and New Year markets. Notable events include: Winter Fairy Tale in Bled with the Legend of the Sunken Bell, Fire Spectacle with the March of the Devils from Three Countries in Podkoren, Live Nativity Scene in the Ice Kingdom in Mojstrana. All of the above is simply a taste of the hundreds of events you can find on the calendar of every tourist information centre in the area.

MAJOR SPORTS EVENTS

19

The biggest sporting events in the Julian Alps include: The Vitranc Cup – FIS Ski World Cup events in Kranjska Gora and Podkoren – and ski jumping in Planica; the World Rowing Championships and Rowing World Cup in Bled; the Bled Winter Swimming Cup; the Biathlon World Cup in Pokljuka; international ski and snowboard freeride events; regular international white-water kayaking and canoeing events; the Paragliding World Cup and European Championships in Tolmin and Kobarid. In summer Tolmin and Kobarid host the Soča Outdoor Festival, a sporting spectacle in which domestic and foreign competitors face each other in various disciplines. Each June the demanding Four Municipalities Mountain Marathon is held in Podbrdo. The latest addition to the running calendar is the Bovec Marathon. With a course that follows the emerald Soča and winds through hidden corners of the Bovec region, this is without a doubt one of the most attractive and enjoyable running events. In Bohinj you can try the Four Bold Men run around the lake or – for the really fit – the Steel Triathlon, an endurance competition for individual athletes and teams that involves canoeing across the lake, cycling up to Uskovnica and running to the foot of Triglav. The “Heroes of the Vineyards” cycling marathon has been held in Brda for a number of years and has become a traditional part of the Cherry Festival and an unforgettable experience for all participants. Smaller sports events – cycling, running, hiking, rowing and a variety of activities in the countryside and on sports fields – take place throughout the summer season on a practically daily basis, since the active component predominates in tourism in the area.

has the small Straža ski area with a view over Lake Bled. The adrenaline-hungry are well provided for in Kranjska Gora, where the Snow Park is a real challenge for snowboarders and skiers. It is the only snow park in Slovenia that is floodlit at night. The best-known centre for cross-country skiing is Pokljuka, accessible from both Bled and Bohinj, while a trek on skis below

the mighty rock faces into the Tamar Valley is a marvellous experience. In Kranjska Gora (Tromeja) and Bovec (Mangart), tobogganing on snowy roads is becoming increasingly popular. The biggest adventure of all is ski touring high in the mountains – for safety reasons a mountain guide must always be present.

Kranjska Gora, a World Cup venue, is Slovenia’s best known resort for Alpine skiing and ski jumping (Planica). Bohinj has the Vogel and Senožeta ski centres (the former is the only ski centre in the Triglav National Park), with Soriška Planina not far away. Bovec offers skiing on Kanin, Slovenia’s highest ski resort, which is connected to the Italian resort of Sella Nevea across the border. Bled

SUSTAINABLE MOBILITY Boat trip by electric boat on Lake Bohinj

The Julian Alps are becoming increasingly accessible by public transport. The public bus network is complemented in the summer months by special bus services to the area's main attractions. A train ride along the Bohinj line between Jesenice and Nova Gorica is a very special experience. Boat trips are available on Lake Bled and Lake Bohinj and on the reservoir at Most na Soči. Bicycles (and electric bicycles) may be hired in numerous locations.

THE HERITAGE TRAIN ON THE BOHINJ LINE An unforgettable journey aboard a romantic steam train. Views of Lake Bled, the Alpine peaks above Bohinj and the emerald-green Soča.

CAR SHUTTLE TRAIN The car shuttle train (Avtovlak) between Bohinjska Bistrica, Podbrdo and Most na Soči is the most comfortable way to get from the Gorenjska side (Bohinj) of the Julian Alps to the Primorska side (Tolmin), making it much easier to see the sights on both sides. Motorbikes, cars and campers are carried. We also recommend the service to cyclists since it saves them the difficult (though beautiful) climb over Soriška Planina (1,277 metres).

HOP-ON, HOP-OFF Tourist bus service that connects Bled, Bohinj, Pokljuka, Radovljica, Begunje, Kropa and Municipality Kobarid in the summer months. GAMES OF CHANCE Slot machines

They say there’s no such thing as chance. And it is no mere chance that the natural environment of the Julian Alps also offers opportunities for experiences of different types. In the contrasts offered by games of chance, you can find new forms of relaxation and amusement that will fill a rainy day or liven up evenings and nights.

Roulette

Try your luck in popular entertainment centres, where as well as playing the slot machines and taking a seat at the gaming tables, you can eat and drink well, enjoy a dance spectacular or even take to the dance floor yourself. There are several places in Kranjska Gora itself where you can try your luck (at the Korona Casino & Hotel and the Larix Casino), or you can head to Bled or Lesce in your hunt for fortune. If you’re in the Soča valley, you can try your luck at Aurora Casino and Cabaret in Staro Selo near Kobarid. Visit the Venko Gaming Salon in Brda and try your luck with the slot machines or electronic roulette in a relaxed and hospitable atmosphere.

ACCOMMODATION Bled

In the beginning was hospitality and every guest was welcome. Diligence and industry have built on this tradition, with the result that the visitor can feel perfectly at home – safe, comfortable and relaxed. But still in touch with the whole world.

Alpine farmhouse, Zadnja Trenta

Glamping, Camping Bled

Visitors to the Julian Alps can relax in a variety of different accommodation. Lovers of the great outdoors can choose camping or immerse themselves in rural life on a farm holiday. Other options include private rooms, apartments and guest houses and a wide range of hotels of different sizes.

www.bled.si Lake Bled with its little island, the castle and the town itself are a fairy-tale vision that never gets old. Full of generosity, sweetness and the beauty of nature. You can swim, skate and row, or ring the bell in the little church on the island. You can enjoy the numerous events that take place in Bled, and walk or run around the lake. Bled’s natural wonders have been given added lustre by the visits of crowned heads and great artists and the eminent physicians who founded the

popular spa on the lake shore, not to mention the many young couples who have exchanged their vows here. Bled has been a member of the Alpine Pearls Association since 2008. Thanks to its location Bled is an excellent base for hiking expeditions (Vintgar Gorge, Pokljuka Hole, Cave below Babji Zob). It is also known around the world as a centre of business tourism.

CAPACITIES

Swan and cygnet

The beginnings of tourism in Bled date back to 1855 when the Swiss hydrotherapist Arnold Rikli was one of the first people to recognise the value and benefits of Bled’s climate and situation. Today guests can stay in hotels with three, four or five stars or in a range of guest houses, youth hostels, a campsite and private accommodation. Bled is Slovenia’s leading Alpine holiday resort. The lake with its island and church and the old castle above the town make Bled one of the most beautiful and romantic tourist destinations in the world. The beauty of the mountains is reflected in the surface of the lake. Visitors can enjoy sunshine, peace and fresh air in all seasons and ideal conditions are guaranteed for a pleasant break or an active holiday. Bled is popular with the business community, artists, athletes, researchers, sports enthusiasts, young and old – from all over the world. Its enchanting beauty means that visitors always want to return.

ONE OF THE MOST VISITED CULTURAL ATTRACTIONS IN SLOVENIA Medieval tournament

Wine cellar

Bled Castle is one of the oldest castles in Slovenia. The first written reference to the castle dates from 22 May 1011, when Henry II of Germany granted it to Adelberon, Bishop of Brixen. The image of the castle above the lake with its romantic little island and church is the classic view of Bled that over the centuries has become recognisable around the world. The castle’s terraces offer an extraordinary view over the Gorenjska region, between the Karavanke/Karawanken range and the Julian Alps.

The castle buildings are ranged around courtyards on two levels. The lower courtyard gives access to the castle printing press, the Primož Trubar Memorial Room, the Stolp art gallery and a shop selling authentic honey products from different regions of Slovenia. In warm weather you can enjoy a coffee, ice cream or other treat from the café on the lower terrace. The wine cellar is located on an intermediate level. Climb the wooden steps and follow the outer wall to the Arnold Rikli Room, above which you will find presentations of the museums of the Gorenjska region. The arrow slits in the walls offer interesting views of the surrounding area. Around the upper courtyard are the two most important parts of the castle building: the sixteenth-century chapel and the museum, whose exhibits tell the story of the historical development of the area around Lake Bled from the Bronze Age to the present day. Here too are the castle restaurant, with its panoramic terrace, and the castle forge. Both levels are protected by high Romanesque walls with a parapet walk, entrance tower and imposing Gothic defence tower. Bled Castle serves as a unique setting for special events (concerts, weddings, talks, etc.) Welcome to Bled Castle!

In the heart of the Triglav National Park and the embrace of the Julian Alps, Slovenia's largest lake is surrounded by the towering mountain peaks of the Bohinj region. Among them are picturesque valleys and astonishing untouched Alpine pastures, where the old tradition of Alpine cheesemaking is still followed in coexistence with nature, as though the passing of time had a different meaning here. Tourists can enjoy many activities and experiences in this unspoilt environment all year round, in the company of friendly locals. People have always got up early in Bohinj, setting off into the mountains when it is still dark and driving away tiredness with the help of the marvellous views. Once upon a time this was a question of

survival. Today it is a matter of pleasures that only lovers of the mountains will understand. A boat ride across the lake, a cable car ride up to Vogel, a visit to the Savica Waterfall, a walk across the Devil’s Bridge and through the gorges of the Mostnica to the valley of Voje or around the lake; trekking through Bohinj’s high Alpine pastures, exploring the great forests of Pokljuka, discovering local traditions in museums, and meeting the locals… All this fills your holiday with a special sense of tranquillity, when the silence of an evening below millions of stars and a feeling of inner peace bid you goodnight. The people of this area invite you to spend your holiday actively and without a car. Numerous sustainable mobility options are available in the Bohinj area, to help preserve and protect this pure environment. In spring you can enjoy meadows bursting with wildflowers and try dishes made with wild plants; in summer you can visit the high pastures or bathe in a crystal-clear lake; in autumn you can dance with the locals and feast on žganci and local Bohinj cheese. In winter the landscape is covered by a white blanket of snow and offers countless opportunities for winter pleasures. Bohinj is a perfectly preserved jewel where modern visitors always find their own good side and a sense of inner peace that reflects the nature around them. Even Agatha Christie, to whom all human vices and weaknesses were an open book, admitted that Bohinj was simply too beautiful for murder. The nature and beauty of Bohinj are enough to seduce anyone and help them find a better personal path.

The Soča Valley, which links the towns of Bovec, Kobarid and Tolmin, was the first European Destination of Excellence (EDEN) in Slovenia. It offers visitors a rich blend of active, cultural and historical experiences in a stunning natural setting. The valley’s main attraction is the emerald-green Soča, one of the most beautiful rivers

The various tributaries of the Soča also flow into the valley, creating crystal-clear pools and waterfalls. Most notable among them are Boka, Slovenia’s most majestic waterfall, and the mysterious Kozjak, trapped in its natural amphitheatre. One of the most popular natural sights in the valley are the deep and narrow Tolmin Gorges, carved into the living rock. But the Soča Valley is not only for nature lovers: it is famous across Slovenia and beyond as an important centre for outdoor activities. The valley offers countless opportunities for sports and recreation: water sports (kayaking, rafting, canyoning), fishing, hiking, cycling, zip-line, parachuting and paragliding, flying, climbing; and in winter, family skiing, cross-country skiing, tobogganing and snow-shoeing. Visitors can combine active adventures with discovering the cultural heritage that still lives in the Alpine pastures, on old farms, in traditional events and in the local gastronomy. The most distinctive local products, frequently found in the valley’s cuisine, include honey and Bovec and Tolmin cheese. Sweet treats include štruklji from Kobarid and krafi from Bovec. This area of wonderful and unspoilt nature and cultural heritage in Slovenia’s Alpine region is protected as part of the Triglav National Park. The Soča (Isonzo) Front is part of world history and, as we mark the centenary of the start of the First World War, an eloquent warning. Monuments from this period are linked together to form the Walk of Peace.

The Green House

BOVEC Holiday House

We are a friendly and hospitable family who were among the first to start renting out apartments to tourists in Bovec. Now our two daughters, both of them qualified tourism operators, are continuing this 30-year tradition. We can accommodate up to 30 guests in 7 spacious apartments in 3 lovely houses. Two of them are typical old Bovec houses with listed building status. The “RENT YOUR HOUSE” service is ideal for groups. Seasonal organic fruit and vegetables available from the orchard and garden. Some bicycles and hiking poles available for the use of guests. Nature lovers will enjoy our farm, surrounded by pastures and fields, and the youngest visitors love our little goats. Those interested in culture are invited to view our gallery of clay sculptures.

BOVEC HOLIDAY HOUSE Location: Brdo 54 A spacious holiday house in a privileged location set back from the road and away from the bustle

of town, but just 5 minutes on foot from the ski resort, airfield and town centre and 20 minutes from the river Soča. A wonderful view of the magnificent mountains and the surrounding countryside extends on all sides. You can sunbathe on sunbeds on the large terrace or relax with a favourite book in a hammock strung between two trees. The attic, containing a small library of mountaineering books and a children’s playroom, gives the house a particular charm.

ITA RINA'S HOUSE Location: Klanc 21 Sleep in the cosy wooden atmosphere of a magnificent antique bedroom hand-crafted by our uncle, a WW2 veteran. Sometimes, when he had too much to drink, memories of his wartime experiences would come flooding back and he would hide under the table shouting “FIRE!!!” This is also the house where our grandfathers’s cousin was born. He was the father of the first Slovene film actress, ITA RINA, remembered as the star who said no to Hollywood. The house has two balconies, a terrace and a garden with a natural spring of drinking water.

THE GREEN HOUSE Location: Kot 78 The house is impossible to miss: it stands next to the main road and its walls are the colour of the river Soča. Outside you can enjoy a green urban park with car parking in the centre of the town. The apartments are decorated in green tourism style. The downstairs communal area now used as a bar was once a stable for the animals. The modern upstairs apartment served as a hayloft.

The Bovec Basin nestles among towering peaks and mountain pastures. Through it flows a wonderful river, the emerald-green Soča, joined by its wild and crystal-clear tributary, the Koritnica. The LIZA campsite is located just 200 metres from the confluence of the two rivers. “This is our second home,” say the many guests who return year after year to this beautiful corner of our country.

Campsite amenities: • open all year round • close to the confluence of the Soča and the Koritnica • restaurant (Gostilna Liza): May–September • fresh bread sold on site: May–September • kayaking and mini-rafting permits • beach volleyball court Better a thousand stars in the sky than five in a hotel.

Above the Koritnica, in the midst of the greenery and trees, our guests find a place where they can enjoy those moments of relaxation that only pure and unspoilt nature can offer, as the river flows gently by. Peace, the smell of freshly baked bread, good food and drink, fresh coolness, the rippling river and endless opportunities for an active holiday await you here.

Juliana Alpine Botanical Garden Juliana is the oldest Alpine botanical garden in the natural environment in Slovenia. It was founded in 1926 by the Triestine businessman Albert Bois de Chesne, who created it with the help of his friend Julius Kugy, a well-known mountaineer, botanist and writer. Juliana is located in the Alpine valley of Trenta, on the slope of Kukla, not far from a little church dedicated to the Virgin Mary, and lies at approximately 800 metres above sea level, some ten metres above the river Soča. The garden covers an area of 2,572 square metres and is supplied with water by a waterfall higher up. Today Juliana is home to around 600 different species of plants from meadows, pastures, rocks, screes, fens, gravel beds and forests. It differs from other Alpine botanical gardens in Europe in its diverse blend of Alpine and karst flora.

Plants include some that are endemic to Slovenia, numerous protected, rare and endangered species, Natura 2000 species and other species traditionally found in Slovenia. Juliana has enjoyed protected status since 1951. Opening hours: from 1 May to 30 September, every day from 8.30 a.m. to 6.30 p.m.

For anglers: guides for the Soča Valley or other rivers in Slovenia, transport, equipment hire, specialist shop (looking brands including Patagonia, Sage, Hanak, Traun River, Chota). Minibus transport for up to 8 people with luggage to nearby airports, railway stations and the starting points of cycling and hiking routes. Custom excursions organised.

For more than 70 years the Tolmin Angling Society has been managing the waters of the Soča, Idrijca, Bača, Nadiža and Tolminka and their tributaries in the municipalities of Bovec, Kobarid and Tolmin. The biggest draw in these rivers is the marble trout (Salmo marmoratus), which is endemic to these waters and can grow to an enormous size. It is in fact the largest European trout. Other interesting fish include hybrid trout species, brown trout and rainbow trout, grayling, barbel and chub.

In the past the marble trout risked extinction as a result of cross-breeding with the brown trout, introduced to Slovenia almost a hundred years ago. In the 1980s some surviving pure marble trout populations were discovered in remote streams. For the last 25 years the Tolmin Angling Society has been running a research and protection project for this unique fish and its survival is now guaranteed. Sport fishing with barbless flies is possible from 1 April to 31 October with a licence. You can buy a catch and release fishing licence or a standard licence that allows you a catch of three fish.

The idyllic image of an Alpine village which has carried the fame of Slovene skiing around the world and is a popular destination for active holidays in summer or winter. The old village centre has developed into a genuine, picturesque jewel of tourism in the Gorenjska region. Here, natural simplicity and worldly sophistication meet. The figure of Kekec personifies the quick wits of the people of Kranjska Gora. The skiing and ski jumping World Cup events testify to the excellence of their organisation and hospitality. Kranjska Gora Ski Centre, the ski centre with the longest tradition in Slovenia, celebrates its 70th anniversary in 2018. This mountain resort offers a range of services in both winter and summer. Annual awards rank Kranjska Gora among the most popular year-round family resorts. The ski lifts and ski runs on the slopes of Vitranc from Kranjska Gora to Planica are at altitudes of between 800 m and 1,215 m. The ski slopes are linked by a system of five chairlifts and 13 drag lifts. Additional snowmaking with compact snow is available on most of the slopes. In terms of difficulty, runs range from the easiest children’s slopes to the competition slopes in Podkoren.

Most of the reasons for choosing this location still apply today: its proximity to the Austrian and Italian borders, ease of access, excellent terrain for major international slalom and giant slalom competitions (Vitranc Cup – an FIS Alpine Ski World Cup event), a long skiing tradition and very gentle, easy slopes for beginners. Summer activities include: bike park, summer toboggan run, summer tube, panoramic rides on the Vitranc 1 chairlift and the Bedančev Dom mountain hut.

Cycling around the Radovljica area

Close to Bled and between the Julian Alps and the Karavanke, discover the sweet treasures of “Radol'ca”. Centuries-old towns and villages, excellent cuisine, traditions in beekeeping, iron forging and music. All in an environment offering unspoilt nature and charming encounters with the past.

Thanks to its Chocolate Festival and its beekeeping and gingerbread-making traditions, the medieval centre of Radovljica is known as Slovenia’s sweetest town. Radovljica also has one of the best preserved old town centres in Slovenia. In it you will find beautifully preserved townhouses, a baroque mansion, restaurants, art galleries and museums. It also serves as a venue for numerous festivals, concerts and other events. Among the most popular tourist attractions are the Apiculture Museum and the gingerbread workshop, where visitors can watch traditional gingerbread hearts being made. The town of Begunje na Gorenjskem lies on the sunny Radovljica plain beneath the ridges of the Karavanke. The town is the birthplace of the renowned musician Slavko Avsenik and the home of Slovene popular folk music. Other attractions include Kamen Castle, Katzenstein Castle and the Avsenik Museum. The village of Brezje, with its basilica dedicated to Mary, Help of Christians – the largest pilgrimage church in Slovenia – and Lesce with its sports airfield and the Gorenjska region’s Beekeeping Education Centre can also be found nearby.Situated beneath the Jelovica plateau in the Lipnica Valley is the village of Kropa. Here the centuries- old tradition of iron-forging is evident in its heritage-protected centre, the Iron Forging Museum, the preserved forge and artistic forging. Radovljica and its surroundings also offer first-class local cuisine and a number of annual events such as the Festival of Chocolate (April), the Early Music Festival (August), the Avsenik Music Festival and a number of smaller events and concerts.

www.linharthotel.com Description The Linhart Hotel, which occupies a carefully renovated seventeenth-century townhouse, first opened its doors to guests in the spring of 2017. This boutique hotel with nine double rooms and one family suite is ideal for a pleasant break or business accommodation in the medieval centre of Radovljica. The hotel has its own café and patisserie, where you can enjoy a good cup of coffee or tea and a cake, as you look out on the attractive old town centre and experience “your own favourite story” for a few moments. The Linhart Hotel named after one of Radovljica’s most famous sons – Anton Tomaž Linhart, the first Slovene playwright, who was also a poet, historian and teacher. He lived in a nearby house on the main square, which bears his name.

Radovljica is surprisingly close at hand and easily reached from the motorway. Bled is just 7 kilometres away and you can reach Brnik Airport by car in less than 30 minutes and Ljubljana in 40 minutes. The ski centres of Vogel (Bohinj), Kranjska Gora, Podkoren and Krvavec are all within a 45 km radius. Hiking trails into the mountain pastures and Alps that inspired so many famous Avsenik compositions – not to mention poets and writers from past centuries – are even closer at hand (5 km) Location The Linhart Hotel stands on the main square in Radovljica’s old town centre. Because the town centre is closed to traffic, guests must park their cars in one of the (at least) two public car parks located close to the entrance to the old town. The Linhart Hotel is 100 metres from the entrance to the old town. Free car parking for guests is available 100 metres from the hotel. Hotel facilities All rooms have a sitting area, cable TV and en-suite bathroom with hairdryer. Wi-Fi is available throughout the hotel. The hotel also has a lift. Centuries-old inns rub shoulders with modern restaurants where Slovenia’s finest chefs ply their trade. Chefs draw inspiration for their dishes from the environment in which they have grown up. Healthy, local produce from green woodland areas is incorporated into remarkable dishes that are a continuation of the culinary tradition of the Alpine region. Tastes of Radol’ca offers something to everyone, from genuine Carniolan sausage and traditional štruklji (boiled strudel) to modern culinary creations in a wonderful setting.

Radovljica Angling Society has been successfully managing local waters since 1953. Our largest stretch of river is the Sava, which is divided into District A, where the Sava Bohinjka and the Sava Dolinka join, and District 4. Together they represent 23 kilometres of untamed and untouched nature. As well as the Sava, we can offer anglers fishing in the Lipnica stream and in the small Vošče pond (mainly carp). Although the rainbow trout is the most common fish in our districts, it is not uncommon to find fine specimens of grayling and brook trout, particularly in District A, which is reserved for catch & release fishing. VINTGAR GORGE One of the largest and most renowned natural sights in Gorje is without a doubt the Vintgar Gorge, cut into the rocks between Hom and Boršt. It was discovered in 1891 by photographer Benedikt Lergetporer and Gorje mayor and cartographer Jakob Žumer. It was first opened to tourists in 1893. The gorge is 1.6 km long, and graced by the magnificent luminous green Radovna river and its pools, waterfalls and rapids. The trail leads you over wooden bridges and galleries. It ends at a bridge overlooking the mighty 15-metre Šum Waterfall, one of the few river waterfalls in Slovenia.

The Beekeeping Path in the Gorje municipality runs through the central part of Gorje from beehive to beehive. It takes you along wonderful panoramic paths where, to the east, you can enjoy beautiful views towards the Karavanke mountain range, the mountain pastures of Kamnik, the Bled district and, beyond it, Radovljica, Kranj and the Ljubljana Basin. As you walk along the path you can discover the cultural and natural sights of the Gorje area and learn about local crafts.

POKLJUKA GORGE The Pokljuka Gorge contains a variety of karst phenomena, natural bridges, cliffs and caves. In places the gorge narrows to just a few metres. The wider sections, containing lush vegetation, are known as “gardens”. The walkways on the sides of the gorge were built by local people in 1930 and named after young Prince Andrew of Yugoslavia. The best-known cave, the “Pokljuka Hole”, has two entrances and three natural windows. The old route to the meadows of Pokljuka and the plateau above runs through the gorge. The Pokljuka Gorge does not receive many visitors but it is nevertheless a sight well worth seeing.

THE POGLEJ “CHURCH” A somewhat less well known sight in Gorje is the Poglej “Church” – a natural cave in which simple tools dating from as far back as the Palaeolithic and Mesolithic periods have been found. The cave is the oldest archaeological site in the area.

STEEL AND DAFFODILS Zois Park

Mountain hut on Golica

Art and history go hand in hand at an opera or the theatre, or even in the mighty old buildings at Stara Sava. The never-forgotten memories of the ironworks and their masters remind us of the steel and iron makers who hand-worked the iron ore and dedicated all their efforts to it. They lived with their masters, worked for them and bought bread from them. Steel made here was used to build the Eiffel Tower and the CERN accelerator, and some of it even sank along with the Titanic! Come and experience Stara Sava, where the most essential elements of an ironworks settlement have been preserved: the owner’s mansion, church, workers’ house, smelting furnace, millraces and mill. The architectural heritage is integrated into and presented in the museum and in cultural and tourist activity.

Many years ago, probably in the 4th century, herdsmen in the Karavanke mountains chanced to take their cattle to the sunny side of the range. The pleasant location of the pastures and the belief that the mountains were rich in iron kept the shepherds from leaving. Some of them at least stayed forever. They cleared the forests to create land for farming. To survive. The first settlements emerged on the lower slopes of the Karavanke, below peaks such as Golica. This beautiful mountain, surrounded by smaller hills and mountains covered with shrubs and trees, is the most beautiful spot in the entire Karavanke range.

PRISTAVA AND ZOIS'S LEGACY We live and will live on this land because we know that someone lived here before us. Their traces remain, so that our grandchildren will be able to explore them. The Zois Park in the Karavanke is full of the traces of the past. The fossilised flora and fauna, cultural heritage, pine woods and forest educational trail, as well as the emerald green lake, the botanical garden named after the botanist Karl von Zois and the nearby meadow trails invite you to discover the shades of history.

Žirovnica lies in the green valley below the Karavanke mountain range. The richness of its literary, beekeeping and archaeological heritage mean that the villages below Mount Stol are known as the “cradle of Slovenian culture and beekeeping”, and this region is well known for its hospitality and the beauty of its landscape.

EXPLORING THE CULTURAL HERITAGE The prize-winning Žirovnica Cultural Heritage Trail invites you to actively explore tradition. The trail connects cultural and historic monuments in the villages below Stol in five

core sites. These are the birth house of Matija Čop, the first Slovene linguist and librarian and one of the greatest European scholars of his time; the beehives of Anton Janša, the first beekeeping teacher at the School of Beekeeping in Vienna; the birth house of Fran Saleški Finžgar, a priest and scholar who left his mark on Slovene literature as a writer of folk tales; the birth house of Janez Jalen, a writer and playwright who searched for inspiration in nature and the lives of simple people in their local environment; and the birth house of France Prešeren, Slovenia’s greatest poet, who expressed his vision of equality and harmony among all nations in his most famous poem “Zdravljica”, adopted as the national anthem when Slovenia became independent.

Prešeren’s birth house in Vrba

GREEN ENERGY Žirovnica municipality abounds in walking, hiking, cycling, mountain biking and riding trails, thus offering a multitude of options for recreation. The green valley of Završnica, where the Završnica Recreational Park is landscaped by the lake, is a popular starting point for hiking in the nearby mountains and visiting mountain huts. Valvasorjev Dom, a very popular hut among local mountaineers, is the most common starting point for the ascent of Stol (2,236 m), the highest peak in the Karavanke range, and the starting point for visiting Ajdna, an ancient archaeological site.
