First Proposal by Hessam Abrishhami
HESSAM ABRISHAMI This fall, Avran welcomes Iranian-born painter, Hessam Abrishami, for a special show of original black and white paintings. Painted specially for Avran, this unique series relies on dynamic, even tumultuous compositional rhythms and stark contrasts between black and white areas that excite the eye. It’s a telling title, “In Absence of Color.” Color is not entirely absent from the works in this series of inks and acrylics, but the occasional flash of red or yellow serves only to emphasize that Abrishami has effectively hewn his images out of pure gesture, sprawling brushstrokes and agitated notations coalescing into apparitions of men and women who seem to vacillate in their poses and expressions. These figures are engaged in a choreography so highly expressive that it bursts through its stylizations and shakes us awake.

AVRAN FINE ART
JENNYFER STRATMAN Stratman is an artist of constant growth and movement. Regular journeys between her studios in the US and Australia reflect core Internal Reflections 5 by Jennyfer Stratman themes throughout her works. Raised in Phoenix and residing in Melbourne, Stratman is prolific in her representations of universal issues such as belonging, and connectedness to one’s environment. Her sculptures often incorporate genderless, faceless figures, turning the primary focus to the interplay between human and nature. Her bronze representations of human anatomy and plant forms are particularly celebrated, and she is uncompromising regarding the quality and integrity of her interpretations. Yet her works are neither intrusive nor ambiguous; there is a fine balance at play and Stratman is known for her ability to convey poignancy via subtlety.

Vararely’s Rate by Péter Borkovics
PÉTER BORKOVICS The glass sculptures of Hungarian artist, Péter Borkovics, are consistent in their formal and technical analysis in which the artist enquires into the melting, flowing, and sudden hardening qualities at a certain stage, in any given form. His work explores the way in which glass melts and flows in the kiln. By careful planning and close examination, he is able to stop the flow at a particular stage, capturing the glass mid-flow. The beauty of these solidified glass moments is not only the outcome of the matter, but the conscious planning of controlled chance, producing a light conducting organic crystal effect.

AVRAN FINE ART
Rocky Snowfall by James C.Leonard
JAMES C. LEONARD James C. Leonard’s compositions are entirely non-representational and move the viewer’s eye vertically or horizontally across the space. This basic movement is complicated by layers of dripped, speckled, and fragmented colors that infuse not only a rich language of color, but also a visual history left to be discovered as the eye moves across the surface. Leonard’s inventive layering process using an extended palette knife results in heavy textured surfaces with a glossy wet shine making them particularly stunning when seen in person. He prefers to call himself a "colorist" and listens to the work as it develops, often carrying an element of smooth transition that he relates to water.. Avran Fine Art is located at 540 S. Caost Highway, Laguna Beach, CA 92651. Please visit them at www.avranart.com, @avranfineart, or call 949/494-0900 LOCALARTS.COM

IMAGINE
T
The Claremont Museum of Art’s exhibition James Strombotne: Imagine focuses on the work of one of the few remaining active Claremont artists from the 1950 and 60s, an era sometimes referred to as Claremont’s “golden age.” Drawings and paintings from the artist’s personal collection reflect the arc of a distinguished career dedicated to making concrete the creative mind’s imaginings. The exhibition opened September 7 with a reception for Strombotne and will remain on view through December 1, 2019. The Claremont Museum of Art, located in the historic Claremont Depot at 200 W. First Street, Claremont, CA. As a sophomore at Pomona College in 1953, James Strombotne enrolled in painting, drawing and design classes at Scripps, studying with a renowned faculty including Phil Dike and Jack Zajac. In the latter’s studios, in Claremont and in Rome, Strombotne spent, as he writes, “the most important years of my life.” After earning an MFA from Claremont Graduate School (1959), the young artist settled in Claremont and went on to teach at UC Riverside, retirMesmerized, 2016 ing in 2005 after 45 years. He continues to draw and paint in his Anaheim studio, as dedicated and passionate about his art as ever. Strombotne’s work has been shown in exhibitions nationwide, including the Whitney Annual and Corcoran Biennial, and can be seen in more than 40 museum collections including the Museum of Modern Art and the Whitney Museum of American Art, New York City; the Hirshhorn Museum, Washington, D.C.; and the Los Angeles County Museum of Art. The exhibition takes its title, Imagine, from a drawing/painting about which Strombotne writes in his recently published book of the same name. Drawn from the artist’s collection, it will reveal the intense curiosity and creative energy of a long-dedicated artist who continues to question, to

IMAGINE push himself, and to produce an extraordinary range of work. Strombotne’s subject matter derives from observation of, and response to, the physical world—figures, objects, landscapes that are both recognizable and abstracted in ways unique to him. Ostensibly “empty” space conveys a sense of quiet that can be surprisingly rich, emotionally evocative. His work is drawing-based, in the classical tradition, and his graphic work both stands on its own and also serves as a springboard to painting. The complex interrelationships between Strombotne’s drawings and paintings will be a focus of the exhibition. As Strombotne writes, “In all of my work, what I am doing is sharing my vision with the viewer. A photograph captures the moment, as do I. However, I ‘interpret’ the moment. I edit, embellish, exaggerate, manipulate, create, invent, celebrate, and so on. My work is continuous invention and imagination. I am an amalgam...a colorist, a draftsman, a surrealist, a fabulist, an inventor, a provocateur, a poet, a dramatist.” The Claremont Museum is open Friday, Saturday and Sunday, noon to 4 p.m. Learn more about the exhibition on the museum website www./claremontmuseum.org. PIETMONDRIAN Broadening the Basics Piet-Mondrian.org Wikipedia Archives
P
iet Mondrian was a Dutch painter who carved a unique niche for himself on the global platform matching the likes of other celebrity painters. He is possibly best known for being one of the founders of the De Stijl, which incorporated an art movement that worked around abstract works and the new art forms that were being introduced to the world in the early 20th century. The movement was also based on the reductive theory; which took a larger scale image and brought it to life on the canvas. Born in the Netherlands in 1872, Mondrian received his formal training at the Rijksadame van Beeldende in Amsterdam. Interestingly, Mondrian was born just 24 years after Vincent van Gogh. With that, Mondrian took an interest in impressionist techniques in his early work. Like Van Gogh, Mondrian used pure, glowing colors and expressive brushwork driven by the contemporary influence of pointillism and Fauvism. The still life images and other scenes in his early career all depicted this style. In the very early 20th century, Piet Mondrian began to make a transition and his works began edging towards a cubist aesthetic. During that time, Dutch artists were increasingly aware of the then radical works of Paul Cezanne and of the Cubists. Active in avant-garde circles, Mondrian was influenced by the new art movement in Paris. Piet Mondrian, Grey Tree, 1911
Piet Mondrian with Petro van Doesberg, 1923
In 1911 he saw the early Cubist works of rising star, Pablo Picasso and was profoundly impressed. Almost immediately, Mondtian began to adapt the concept of Cubism into his own painting. In the summer of 1914, Mondrian returned to the Netherlands to visit his ailing father. The outbreak of World War I prevented him from returning to Paris. During this period, when he was at home in Holland, he decided to work on an abstract art form which later would be classified as Neoplastic style. The work he produced during this period was depicted by lighter colors, simplified color selection and forms that were balanced in composition. After the War, Mondrian returned to Paris and upon his arrival, began to work with Theo van Doesburg. Together they developed the De Stijl movement which is what Mondrian would become most well known for during the course of his extensive career. The group was formed in 1917, and it extended the aesthetic principles to architecture, sculpture, canvas, and graphic arts. This was the new “pure plastic art, which he believed was necessary in order to create 'universal beauty'. To express this, Mondrian eventually decided to limit his formal vocabulary to: three primary colors (red, blue and yellow), three primary values (black, white and gray) and two primary directions (horizontal and vertical). Piet Mondrian decided to leave the group to work on new movements after a disagreement about the use of

diagonal lines. In 1931, he joined the Abstraction - Creation line, which was more open to new styles. In 1932, a major retrospective exhibition of Mondrian's work was held at the Stedelijk Museum, in honor of the artist's 60th birthday. When World War II began, Piet Mondrian moved to London for a brief time before eventually landing in New York. In 1942, he held his first solo exhibit; just a few years prior to his death in 1944. The work was represented by a
large gallery in NYC, and was widely accepted by visitors as well as his piers in the art world. In addition to being a celebrated artist, and founder of different art groups and reforms, Mondrian also wrote a number of pieces during his career. He published a number of theoretical texts which reached an international audience. His works are housed in different parts of the world, including Paris, Switzerland, Amsterdam and the National Gallery of Art in Washington DC. •
