On August 3, Paige will be doing a live demonstration in the gallery during the afternoon using one of LA’s professional ballerinas as her model. An evening reception will follow from 6:30-9pm. Canadian-born artist, JOËLLE BLOUIN has earned an impressive reputation for developing her own unique style – Urban Cubism, earning her a grand prize at the ArtExpo New York in 2015. Soon after, she was named among the “TOP 40 Artists to Watch!” in Art Business News Magazine.

The imperfection and abstraction show that aesthetic beauty can emerge from a simple environment.” – Joëlle Blouin Joëlle’s bold modern colors and architectural structure reflects her background in Interior Design. Using only a palette knife, she actually sculpts the brilliant colors to create a rich texture giving shadows and depth to her work. Joëlle Blouin’s work will be featured for the month of September with special evening reception on Saturday, September 21st, from 6:30-9pm at the gallery. Established through foundational gifts of art made in 2016 and 2017, UCI IMCA is poised to become a comprehensive center for the study, research and exhibition of the distinctive work made by California’s artists from the early 19th century to the present. Kanatani comes to the UCI IMCA from the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum in New York, where she has served as deputy director and the Gail Engelberg Director of Education. The UCI Institute and Museum for California Art (UCI IMCA) is home to two of the most comprehensive and expansive collections of California art. Celebrate the Legacy Laguna Plein Air Painters Association

s early as 1886, plein air painters came to Laguna Beach to paint the clear and intense light that characterizes the sheer natural beauty of our coastal community. These artists, who would become the founders of the California Impressionist Style, included William Wendt, George Garden Symons, Granville Redmond, Franz A. Bischoff, Frank Cuprien, Anna Hills, Donna Schuster and Edgar Payne, among many others. Norman St. Clair is credited with establishing Laguna Beach as an Artists’ Colony around 1903. LPAPA’s Plein Air Project The Laguna Plein Air Painter’s Association (LPAPA) mission is to preserve the history of the plein air movement of 19th century California, to support the tradition as it exists today, and to foster a network among plein air painters nationwide. LPAPA is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit arts organization based in Laguna Beach, California, with a membership and art community presence on a national and global level. It was founded in Laguna Beach in 1996
LPAPA is considered the steward of Laguna’s artistic legacy with a mission dedicated to preserving the plein air tradition of painting for future generations. LPAPA shares a parallel centennial history with the present day Laguna Art Museum. In keeping with tradition, LPAPA curates six shows annually at their LPAPA In Residence Gallery, located at Forest & Ocean Gallery 480 Ocean Ave Laguna Beach. The Plein Air Project is LPAPA’s Education Program lead by its Director of Education and signature artist member Jeff Sewell, Director of Community Relations and artist member Celeste Gilles, and LPAPA’s Invitational Gala

By definition, all the arts are sensual, meaning that they are pleasing to one or more of the five senses.While poetry can be read or spoken, paintings are uniquely accessed through our sense of vision.
California Landscape, 1912, by Granville Redmond (1871-1935) shows several varieties of wildflowers accompanied by majestic oak trees. Cherry trees in flower are celebrated in Springtime, Banning, painted by Anna Hills (1882-1930) in 1916. She shows a group of vivid flowering trees set against the snowy slopes of Mt. San Jacinto, in Banning, at the time a cattle and agriculture community located near Palm Springs.

For over 100 years Laguna Beach has been known as an art colony where artists from around the world flock to view and capture the breathtaking azure coastline and the verdant green canyons. Already in 1911 Laguna was known as a painters paradise and artist clubs soon formed with the lucky ones that were able to settle in the area, or at least those who could visit often. Master artists such as Edgar Payne and William Wendt were among the early greats, now legends commanding easily over a quarter million at fine art auctions for a single work.

At this time the genre of Impressionism and painting outdoors “en plein air” out in the open on location was extremely popular and had replaced over traditional works with dark figures and interiors. Colorful blue oceans, golden cliffs and figures at the beach, dark oak trees contrasting with the lime green canyon grass painted in fresh vibrant hues. This new style stemming from France, with bolder color and visible brushwork and strokes made its way to New York in 1886 with a large exhibition of imported French Impressionism. Americans were taken by this exciting new genre soon after influencing artists and schools on the East coast, and finally making its way to the West coast for an endless summer of 30 years and by now coined “California Impressionism”.
