The

Signature Gallery On Forest Avenue in Downtown Laguna Beach

T

he Signature Gallery on Forest Avenue is a visionary feast. It must be experienced in person to understand the quality and excitement of today’s art world. On display are the rich textures and vivid colors of today’s rising stars as well as world-renowned artists. This summer The Signature Gallery will be spotlighting two of their best. Sculptor PAIGE BRADLEY has been perfecting her art for over 3 decades. The up-and-coming Joelle Blouin is a bright new light on the art scene. Both will speak to your heart.. In August the gallery will be featuring Paige Bradley's powerful sculptures of the human figure. Each piece shows tremendous energy

and passion reflecting the inner strength and fortitude of the human soul. Grace and balance come powerfully alive in Paige’s sculpture. Having lived and studied in Carmel, Florence, NYC, she now makes her home in Connecticut. Continued on page 20

Sunset Drive by Joëlle Blouin

On August 3, Paige will be doing a live demonstration in the gallery during the afternoon using one of LA’s professional ballerinas as her model. An evening reception will follow from 6:30-9pm. Canadian-born artist, JOËLLE BLOUIN has earned an impressive reputation for developing her own unique style – Urban Cubism, earning her a grand prize at the ArtExpo New York in 2015. Soon after, she was named among the “TOP 40 Artists to Watch!” in Art Business News Magazine.

“I leave room for the imagination. The imperfection and abstraction show that aesthetic beauty can emerge from a simple environment.” – Joëlle Blouin Joëlle’s bold modern colors and architectural structure reflects her background in Interior Design. Using only a palette knife, she actually sculpts the brilliant colors to create a rich texture giving shadows and depth to her work. Joëlle Blouin’s work will be featured for the month of September with special evening reception on Saturday, September 21st, from 6:30-9pm at the gallery. The Signature Gallery is open daily and is located at 220 Forest Avenue, Laguna Beach, CA 92651. For additional information, call 949-376-4244 or visit the signaturegallery.com

LACMA, chinese contemporary artists cultivate relationships with their materials, establishing a framework of interpretation revolving around materiality. with their media ranging from commonplace to the unconventional, the natural to the synthetic, the elemental to the composite: from plastic, water, and wood, to hair, tobacco, and coca-cola. artists explore this creative mode, with some devoting decades of their practice to experiments with a single material. The Allure of Matter: Material Art from China brings together works from the past four decades in which conscious material choice has become a symbol of the artists’ expression, representing this unique trend throughout recent history. Some of the most influential chinese contemporary artists today are featured in this exhibition, including Xu Bing, cai guo-qiang, lin tianmiao, and ai weiwei. Known for his unique “neo-mannerist” approach of presenting figures through elongated forms, he captured his observations of life growing up in north carolina, playing professional football in the nFl (1960–1964), and living in los angeles. s early as 1886, plein air painters came to Laguna Beach to paint the clear and intense light that characterizes the sheer natural beauty of our coastal community. These artists, who would become the founders of the California Impressionist Style, included William Wendt, George Garden Symons, Granville Redmond, Franz A. Bischoff, Frank Cuprien, Anna Hills, Donna Schuster and Edgar Payne, among many others. Norman St. Clair is credited with establishing Laguna Beach as an Artists’ Colony around 1903. LPAPA’s Plein Air Project The Laguna Plein Air Painter’s Association (LPAPA) mission is to preserve the history of the plein air movement of 19th century California, to support the tradition as it exists today, and to foster a network among plein air painters nationwide. LPAPA is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit arts organization based in Laguna Beach, California, with a membership and art community presence on a national and global level. It was founded in Laguna Beach in 1996

LPAPA is considered the steward of Laguna’s artistic legacy with a mission dedicated to preserving the plein air tradition of painting for future generations. LPAPA shares a parallel centennial history with the present day Laguna Art Museum. Poems Without Words

Through August 10, 2019 Colin Campbell Cooper Pergola at Samarkand, c. 1921

“PAINTING IS SILENT POETRY, AND POETRY IS PAINTING THAT SPEAKS.” These words were written by the Greek biographer and essayist Plutarch (46120 AD) nearly 2000 years ago. By definition, all the arts are sensual, meaning that they are pleasing to one or more of the five senses. While poetry can be read or spoken, paintings are uniquely accessed through our sense of vision.

California Landscape, 1912, by Granville Redmond (1871-1935) shows several varieties of wildflowers accompanied by majestic oak trees. Cherry trees in flower are celebrated in Springtime, Banning, painted by Anna Hills (1882-1930) in 1916. She shows a group of vivid flowering trees set against the snowy slopes of Mt. San Jacinto, in Banning, at the time a cattle and agriculture community located near Palm Springs.

The French poet and art critic Charles If Macaw and Baudelaire (1821Cockatoos, John Hubbard Rich The Idle Hour, 1917 1867) wrote: “Dancpainted by Jessie ing is poetry with arms and legs.” In that spirit, Arms Botke (1883-1971) in 1926 were a poem, one would be tempted to paraphrase him and say: it would have a jarring tone accented by the loud Painting is poetry with paint and brushes. discourse between the macaw and one of the cockatoos. California has always been noted for its blossoms. This is reflected in the large number of landscape paintings that feature wildflowers. As it was uniquely associated with California, and indeed is the official state flower, the Golden Poppy is shown in numerous paintings. Most often, it appears in paintings of springtime, spread as a bright orange carpet across the hills.

FEATURE

Plein Air Carrying on the Tradition by Vanessa Rothe/Vanessa Rothe Fine Art

For over 100 years Laguna Beach has been known as an art colony where artists from around the world flock to view and capture the breathtaking azure coastline and the verdant green canyons. Already in 1911 Laguna was known as a painters paradise and artist clubs soon formed with the lucky ones that were able to settle in the area, or at least those who could visit often. Master artists such as Edgar Payne and William Wendt were among the early greats, now legends commanding easily over a quarter million at fine art auctions for a single work.

F

Susan Diehl, Waiting the Audience, 9 x 12”

At this time the genre of Impressionism and painting outdoors “en plein air” out in the open on location was extremely popular and had replaced over traditional works with dark figures and interiors. Colorful blue oceans, golden cliffs and figures at the beach, dark oak trees contrasting with the lime green canyon grass painted in fresh vibrant hues. This new style stemming from France, with bolder color and visible brushwork and strokes made its way to New York in 1886 with a large exhibition of imported French Impressionism. Americans were taken by this exciting new genre soon after influencing artists and schools on the East coast, and finally making its way to the West coast for an endless summer of 30 years and by now coined “California Impressionism”. In addition to Payne and Wendt, there was Franz Bishoff, Guy Rose and the clever Anna Hills who lead many of the artists and painted as well. Important art groups were formed such as the California Art Club and Laguna Art Association.

Peggi Kroll Roberts, Painters on the Beach, 8 x 10”

Today in 2019, over one hundred years later this style of painting landscapes and figures with a fresh colorful stroke is still exceedingly popular with todays living legends such as Ray Roberts, John Cosby, Jesse Powell, Michael Obermeyer, Bryan Mark Taylor and Peggi Kroll-Roberts poised to be the next collectables of our times. With the next generation also following suit, even some of who have made their name as a contemporary artist in America exhibiting beyond California, even all the way back to the walls of New York. Many of the fine art organizations are still active such as the California Art Club and Laguna Plein Air Painters Association as well as other local art groups such as the Southern California Plein Air Painters Association. Excitingly, you can still find and collect these contemporary and historical American artists and their works that poses the same quality and subjects as the historical Impressionist paintings. For contemporary and historical works please visit Vanessa Rothe Fine Art Gallery (pg. 27), Pacific Edge Gallery (pg. 21), Studio 7 Gallery (pg.38) or The Redfern Gallery (pg.52). The Laguna Plein Air Painters Association also exhibits works by its membership at Forest and Ocean Gallery (pg. 47).
