he Hilbert Museum of California Art at Chapman University focuses on vibrant paintings of everyday life in 20th century Los Angeles and its surrounding region in a major exhibition, “Los Angeles Area Scene Paintings,� on view through May 2, 2020. Curated by California Scene painting experts (and father-son team) Gordon T. McClelland and Austin D. McClelland, the show features more than 70 paintings created between the early 1900s and the present day by acclaimed California artists, including Millard Sheets, Emil Kosa Jr., Rex Brandt, Lee Blair, Dorothy Sklar, Barse Miller, Luvena Vysekal, Vanessa Helder, Roger Kuntz, Edward

sembled by museum founders Mark and Janet Hilbert of Newport Coast, many of which have been gifted to the Hilbert Museum. A 144-page hardcover exhibition catalogue, Los Angeles Area Scene Paintings, written by the McClellands, has been published and is available for purchase at the museum. “Over the past 100 years, the Los Angeles area has transitioned through many changes,” explains Gordon McClelland. “During that time, there were many talented artists who lived in this region – many drawn here to work in the booming movie industry – who produced visual art that captured the look and feel of what was happening around them. Some preferred working in oil paints, others in watercolor. Today the works they produced are valued both as fine art and as a visual documentation of bygone times.” Some of the iconic landmarks depicted in the paintings include Los Angeles City Hall, the Capitol Records tower, the Sandow Birk, Domingo En Mi Barrio, 1993, acrylic on canvas. Hollywood Bowl, the Goodyear Blimp station in Carson, and the amazing mid-century concretesculpted forms of the interweaving L.A. freeways. Historic locations such as Olvera Street, Chinatown, the old Victorian-era homes that once crowned Bunker Hill, the Angels Flight incline railway and the Griffith Park observatory became inspiration for these artists. “Taken all together, this exhibition becomes almost a time-travel experience through L.A. over the last century,� McClelland says. The California Scene painting movement, which flourished from the 1930s through roughly the 1970s (with some notable examples after that pe-

riod), focuses on scenes of everyday life in the Golden State. In both oils and watercolors, California artists portrayed daily life around them in cityscapes, rural scenes, populated landscapes, portraits. The movement encompassed such genres as social realism and regionalism. These styles flourished strongly in the Los Angeles area, where innovative artists portrayed not only the beauty and vitality of the diverse and burgeoning metropolis, but also the realism and often downright grittiness of everyday life in the city. The Hilbert Museum also showcases a new exhibition in its American Illustration gallery – “A Fine Romance: Images of Bradford Salamon, Vintage Capitol Records, 2017, oil on canvas, The Hilbert Collection.

Love in Classic American Illustration,” through March 7 – curated from pieces in the Hilbert Collection, featuring original magazine illustrations by Joe De Mers, Jon Whitcomb, Joseph Bowler, Pruett Carter, Gwen Fremlin and other acclaimed illustrators of the mid-20th century. The current exhibition in the Animation and Movie Arts gallery, “The Magic and Flair of Mary Blair,” featuring concept art by the renowned Disney artist, has been extended by popular demand through March 7. The museum’s Permanent Collection galleries also feature newly selected works from the collection, as well as visitor favorites. The Hilbert Museum is open Tuesdays-Saturdays, 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. The museum is located at 167 N. Atchison Street in Orange, across from the Orange Metrolink train station. Admission is free. Limited free parking is available in front of the museum, with a permit obtained at the front desk. There is also plenty of free parking in the City of Orange’s new Old Towne West parking structure located at 130 N. Lemon Street, just one block east of the museum. LACMA, The first substantial project on the art of Fiji to be mounted in the united States, Fiji: Art & Life in the Pacific features over 280 artworks drawn from major international collections, including the Fiji Museum, British Museum, Museum of Archaeology and Anthropology (Cambridge), the Smithsonian, and distinguished private collections. The exhibition includes figurative sculpture, ritual kava bowls, breastplates of pearl shell and whale ivory, large-scale barkcloths, small portable temples, weapons, and European watercolors and paintings. Professor Steven Hooper and his team from the Sainsbury Centre, in norwich, England assembled a deeply researched and comprehensive exhibition that was recently on view in its galleries and now reformatted by LACMA to include major loans from u.S. collections. Additionally, the museum will feature historic photographs from LACMA’s Blackburn collection, as well as a newly commissioned 26’ doublehull sailing canoe (drua) constructed in Fiji using traditional materials and techniques (through 7/19/20) LACMA.org
MOCA With Pleasure: Pattern and Decoration in American Art 1972–1985 is the first full-scale scholarly survey of this groundbreaking American art movement, encompassing works in painting, sculpture, collage, ceramics, installation art, and performance documentation. Covering the years 1972 to 1985 and featuring approximately fifty artists from across the united States, the exhibition examines the Pattern and Decoration movement’s defiant embrace of forms traditionally coded as feminine, domestic, ornamental, or craft-based and thought to be categorically inferior to fine art. Pattern and Decoration artists gleaned motifs, color schemes, and materials from the decorative arts, freely appropriating floral, arabesque, and patchwork patterns and arranging them in intricate, almost dizzying, and sometimes purposefully gaudy designs. Their work across mediums pointedly evokes a pluralistic array of sources from islamic architectural ornamentation to American quilts, wallpaper, Persian carpets, and domestic embroidery. Pattern and Decoration artists practiced a postmodernist art of appropriation borne of love for its sources rather than the cynical detachment that became de rigueur in the international art world of the 1980s. This exhibition traces the movement’s broad reach in postwar American art by artists whose contribu-

originated by The Broad, Shirin Neshat: I Will Greet the Sun Again is the largest exhibition to date of internationally acclaimed artist Shirin neshat’s approximately 30-year career. Taking its title from a poem by iranian poet Forugh Farrokhzad, the exhibition (over 230 photographs and eight immersive video installations works) offers a rare glimpse into the evolution of neshat’s artistic journey as she explores topics of exile, displacement, and identity with beauty, dynamic formal invention, and poetic grace. Beginning with her early photograph series, Women of Allah, the exhibition also features iconic video works such as Rapture, Turbulent, and Passage, monumental photography installations including The Book of Kings and The Home of My Eyes, and Land of Dreams, a new, ambitious work encompassing a body of photographs and two videos that will make its global debut in the exhibition. CAAM one of the most pervasive stereotypes constructed during the post-Civil War era, and arguably the most enduring image from the days of Jim Crow, the mammy was a staple caricature in the romanticization of the Antebellum South. Popularized into the twentieth century by characters such as “Mammy” in MGM’s hit film Gone with the Wind (1939), this archetype of black domestic servitude was often depicted as good-natured, overweight, and loud. Presenting an ahistorical view of black womanhood within southern plantation hierarchies, the mammy not only embellished the realities of black life in the American South, but it also denied African American women their femininity, beauty, and strength. Making Mammy: A Caricature of Black Womanhood, 1840–1940 explores how the mammy figure was produced in an effort to temper the atrocities of enslavement and serve southern interests domestically, economically, and politically. Bringing together films, photographs, and artifacts, it examines the legacy of the institutionalized stereotype, considering a century of complex manufacturing of black femininity, power dynamics, and mass-media messaging that still affects black women’s body image, lack of agency, and sense of self. It was a leap of faith to make that transition to a permanent solo space, but Wirth rose to the challenge. A bit of construction improvement to the interior made the final product a worthy showcase – and workspace – for the new venture. “I wanted a great blend of gallery and work zone, so that both clients and fellow artists would immediately feel welcome,” she comments. “L
isten to the cry of a woman in labor at the hour of giving birth - look at the dying man's struggle at his last extremity, and then tell me whether something that begins and ends thus could be intended for enjoyment." With this statement, the 19th century Danish existentialist Soren Kierkegaard declared life to be a struggle. The early 20th century artist Arshile Gorky created an immense body of work rooted in boldly confronting the human struggle, even quoting Kierkegaard in the title of his 1945 biomorphic, surrealistic and erotically-charged work Diary of a Seducer. Just like how Kierkegaard perceived life to be, Gorky's life seems to be booked-ended in unimaginable struggle, and yet, through it all, Gorky created a profoundly emotional and influential body of paintings and drawings, which earned him a place amongst the fathers of the Surrealism and Abstract Expressionism. Born Vosdanig Adoian in 1902, in the Armenian village of Khorkom, the young Arshile Gorky

bore witness to the ethnic cleansing of his people in 1915 by Turkish troops. In 1919, while fleeing this persecution in Turkey, his mother died of starvation in his arms after a 120-mile march. Shortly thereafter, Gorky emigrated to the US with his sister, arriving on the shores of New York in 1920. Though he re-invented himself, and like so many immigrants changed his name, his Armenian heritage and childhood memories would haunt his work like a specter for the rest of his life. In the US, Gorky began to school himself as an artist by drawing from works he saw in museums and art publications. What he created was a unique abstract style, grounded in the study of the masters. While so many Surrealists delved into mythological symbolism in the dreamscapes of their works, Gorky "uniquely… located these themes in his personal history," charging his memories of Armenia with mythic significance. In 1941, he created a series of three abstract pieces called the Garden of Sochi, which harken the vitality of Joan Miró or Wassily Kandinsky. When asked to describe the pieces by the Museum of Modern Art in New York, Gorky stated: “My father had a little garden with a few apple trees which had retired from giving fruit. There was a ground constantly in shade where grew incalculable amounts of wild carrots, and porcupines had made their nests.” Though these pieces capture a seemingly happy memory, there is an inherent longing and sadness underlying the work which may perhaps reflect a longing for something that no longer exists. In the book Letters of Transit: Reflections on Exile, Identity, Language and Loss by André Aciman, novelist Bharati Mukherjee calls immigration "the stage,

art history and the battleground, for the most exciting dramas of our time." The drama captured Gorky's work touches upon so many of these themes, like the longing for and memory of one's homeland while exiled from it. Gorky surrounded himself with other avantgarde artists in New York living in exile from their home countries, including André Breton and Willem de Kooning, whose friendships continually informed his work. Breton's Surrealist influence is seen in pieces like The Leaf of the Artichoke Is an Owl, which was titled after a meal shared between the two artists in which Breton associated an owl with an artichoke. Gorky assimilated the Surrealist practice of automatic drawing into his works. This can be seen in how he laid down his paint in thin, flowing gestures, mimicking objects from life, but whose vagueness encourage free association. Gorky and fellow Abstract Expressionist painter Willem de Kooning shared a respect and reverence for the masters like Picasso who came before them. So many of the new school of painters during the 1940s in the US, were "trying to forge what Americans often think of as an individualist stance" as seen in the "rugged individualist" mythos built up around the work of Jackson Pollock. Gorky and de Kooning came from a more European point of view, in which they saw themselves as continuing on and building upon the traditions in painting that came before. Gorky stressed "an artist can mature only after having experienced a period of apprenticeship." He saw himself "with" the painters who came before and inspired him, rather than trying to be fiercely different from them. Though, his work was still new, vital and raw, because he was expressing his own individual, unique life experiences within it. Works like the impassioned 1947 piece Agony seem to glow and rage like a fire, and are often interpreted by historians in relation to the events which led up to Gorky's death. stroyed an immense amount of his work, the artist was diagnosed with cancer for which he received a painful operation, he had a serious automobile accident and additionally was experiencing marital troubles. Gorky committed suicide on July 21, 1948. One of his last pieces from 1947 was a piece entitled Summation, of which Gorky said "there is my world." This piece is filled with the ambiguous, organic shapes that dominated his work though the '40s. The piece seems to be created in a spontaneous, unplanned way, capturing what “Surrealist leader André Breton called "hybrids," or linear units with multiple metaphoric meanings." Though, the work on paper was a result of careful planning and study upon Gorky's part, the pseudo-biological forms seem to spontaneously move and interact with each other, while emerging and fading back into a misty atmosphere the artist created with a layer of charcoal. In this piece Gorky was showing us his "world" that he seems to have been dreaming of all his life. It is a world where what is tangible seems so hard to grasp, like trying to physically grab onto a spiritual or emotional feeling or even a homeland that no longer exists as it once did in memory. Gorky's work captures such vitally universal themes as the struggle of existence and the struggle of creation and, because of this universality, his "world" will continue to live on.

OCMA recently unveiled the design for the museum’s new building at Segerstrom Center for the Arts in Costa Mesa, CA, created by Morphosis, the global architecture and design firm led by Pritzker Prize-winner Thom Mayne. Expanding on the museum’s legacy of community enrichment and presentation of modern and contemporary art from artists rooted in Southern California and the Pacific Rim, OCMA’s new home will be defined by an open and engaging urban presence within Orange County’s largest center for arts and culture. LA Art Show Celebrates 25 Years
