inding a moment to catch his breath in his home studio, Columbian-born painter and sculptor Orlando Aguldelo Botero sits surrounded by his latest works in progress. With his artwork both in private and public collections as prestigious and diverse as The Carter Presidential Library, NBC Corporate Headquarters at the Rockefeller Center, The Chrysler Corporation and The Betty Ford Center among others. Adding to this, in a formal ceremony at the White House, Agudelo-Botero was awarded the highest honor that can be bestowed upon a Hispanic immigrant in the United States – the Hispanic Heritage Award. From those humble Columbian beginnings, Orlando has emerged as both a prolific and singular voice in the contemporary art scene; his name associated with a rapturous body of work that has the alchemy to both forge a connection and elicit a deep emotional response. his year marks the 22nd Anniversary of the premier gallery in Laguna Beach: Dawson Cole Fine Art. For over twenty years visitors to Southern, CA have experienced this world-class gallery, and have enjoyed the uniquely Californian ambience of its beautiful sculpture garden. With locations in Laguna Beach, Carmel and Palm Desert, Dawson Cole Fine Art has established their reputation as the leading West Coast destination for contemporary figurative sculpture, paintings, and important prints. Visitors will be inspired by the artful presentation of an extensive collection of bronze figurative sculpture by noted American sculptor, Richard MacDonald. Featuring a comprehensive selection of the sculptor’s collected works, from iconic, museum-represented pieces, to the artist’s recent works, which can be seen here first—this gallery is at the vanguard of the Neo-Figurative movement led by Richard MacDonald. Adding rich layers to the visual and collecting experience is the expertly selected presentation of significant drawings, prints, and works on paper by American and European masters. The collection of a focused, curated collection of Early Modernism and West Coast Regionalism sets the gallery apart: offering works by Chuck Close, Richard MacDonald, Wayne Thiebaud, Hunt Slonem, Donald Sultan, Jim Dine, Carolyn Reynolds, Jian Wang, Jim Lamb, Tom Betts, and James Galindo among others. Recognized by Modern Luxury Magazine, the gallery was selected as the Top Gallery in the “Best of OC” for two consecutive years. Dawson Cole Fine Art has established itself as a supporter of the local arts and wider community with many charitable efforts to benefit Olive Crest, Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation, the Boys and Girls Club of Laguna Beach, the Festival Ballet Theatre, Orange County Fashion Week and the local art students of the Laguna College of Art & Design and many others, most notably donating an iconic work by Wayne Thiebaud to the Laguna Art Museum permanent collection. Phil, by Chuck Close

Richard MacDonald’s sculpture is known the world over, and his monuments, including Atlanta's 26-foot Olympic gymnast, The Flair at the Georgia World Congress Center, and the 15-foot-tall Momentum, celebrating the 100th U.S. Open at Pebble Beach take his vision of contemporary figurative sculpture to an audience of millions daily. Scheduled for installation is another major monument for the historic Royal Ballet School in England, which will further broaden his artistic influence. For over twenty years, this landmark gallery in Laguna Beach has been developing trusted relationships with collectors, helping to bring the best of contemporary art to Orange County. With the knowledgeable help of Dawson Cole Fine Art, patrons can acquire works by artists represented in the permanent collections of the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York, the Guggenheim Museum, the Chicago Art Institute and the Museum of Modern Art in San Francisco. World in the mirrorof metaphor the

Kush

Kush Fine Art Gallery In the heart of downtown Laguna Beach, one artist and gallery stand out amongst the rest. World renowned painter, sculptor and jewelry designer Vladimir Kush dazzles admirers with his creations at Kush Fine Art. Located directly across from Main Beach on the corner of Forest Avenue and Pacific Coast Highway, his oceanfront gallery offers more to discover than just a beautiful view. Over the past 20 years Russian born American artist Vladimir Kush has had galleries in Laguna Beach exclusively showing his work. Kush Fine Art Gallery has become a cornerstone for the art community in Laguna Beach. With galleries in Lahaina, Maui and Caesars Palace, Las Vegas, Kush’s artwork serves as a beacon of light and inspiration for visitors from all over the world. Visit any Kush Fine Art gallery and you are immediately transported to his magical world of Metaphorical Realism. Kush is the creator and founder of Metaphorical Realism, reflecting his original, unique style of artwork. The task of the artist is to represent through metaphor his journey in the imperceptibly changeable world. Like an electronic microscope making visible the tiniest objects less than a light wavelength in size, it allows the hidden effects to be noticed and revealed in the rays of fantasy and imagination. An image transfer, for example, suddenly lays bare the previously unseen connections: wings of a butterfly and windmill sails, the flow of water and the flow of fabric, as seen here in Fauna in La Mancha, Le Reve and Voyeur. Metaphorical Realism liberates the subconscious making it possible to look beyond the broken towards a restoration of the authentic harmony around us, leaving us unexpectedly refreshed, soothed in familiarity, hope and optimism. Kush has produced over 500 original oil paintings, hundreds of watercolors, thousands of drawings and an entire line of equally accomplished jewelry which by itself is worthy of being its own separate brand. Voyeur

Kush Fine Art is one of the only galleries in the modern art scene encompassing multiple genres: paintings, drawings, etchings,

EXPRESSIONS

GRAND Summer Exhibit

At The CAP Gallery In the Historic Wells Fargo Bank Building

June 8 - Sept 27 Celebrate Summer with splashes of bold colors, bright light, original designs and layered compositions featuring two remarkable abstract artists: Elizabeth Bridy and Elaine Cohen at The CAP Gallery, Wells Fargo Building, 260 Ocean Avenue, Laguna Beach, June 8th - Sept. 27th (M-F 9-6, Sat 9-4). Their art reflects passion, spontaneity and “Expressions Grand”. ELIZABETH BRIDY grew up in Quebec, Canada where she was fascinated by the seasons, and the blend of colors, textures and materials. When she looks at an empty canvas, she sees a world of possibility; simple and complex. Her compositions of mixed media are layered with fabric, magazine clippings, charcoal, crayon and paint.

ELAINE COHEN was born in New York City and raised in California. She dreamed of becoming an artist when she was five years old. After marrying and raising a family, she eventually pursued a career in art. Elaine was the featured “Emerging Artist” on PBS White House Chronicles on three separate episodes. During the creative process, she sees an image come alive on canvas which emerges into a painting that is exciting, spontaneous, challenging and original. Both Elizabeth and Elaine have studios at the Laguna Canyon Artists’ Studios (see page 42). CAP's mission is to increase the visibility and appreciation of art and serve as a catalyst for art education. Learn more at caplaguna.org The Cap Gallery by Tom Lamb

Poems Without Words

“PAINTING IS SILENT POETRY, AND POETRY IS PAINTING THAT SPEAKS.” These words were written by the Greek biographer and essayist Plutarch (46120 AD) nearly 2000 years ago. By definition, all the arts are sensual, meaning that they are pleasing to one or more of the five senses. While poetry can be read or spoken, paintings are uniquely accessed through our sense of vision.

California Landscape, 1912, by Granville Redmond (1871-1935) shows several varieties of wildflowers accompanied by majestic oak trees. Cherry trees in flower are celebrated in Springtime, Banning, painted by Anna Hills (1882-1930) in 1916. She shows a group of vivid flowering trees set against the snowy slopes of Mt. San Jacinto, in Banning, at the time a cattle and agriculture community located near Palm Springs.

The French poet and art critic Charles If Macaw and Baudelaire (1821Cockatoos, John Hubbard Rich The Idle Hour, 1917 1867) wrote: “Dancpainted by Jessie ing is poetry with arms and legs.” In that spirit, Arms Botke (1883-1971) in 1926 were a poem, one would be tempted to paraphrase him and say: it would have a jarring tone accented by the loud Painting is poetry with paint and brushes. discourse between the macaw and one of the cockatoos. California has always been noted for its blossoms. This is reflected in the large number of landscape paintings that feature wildflowers. As it was uniquely associated with California, and indeed is the official state flower, the Golden Poppy is shown in numerous paintings. Most often, it appears in paintings of springtime, spread as a bright orange carpet across the hills.

Jean-Michel Basquiat-

SO FAST, SO SOON Wikipedia Archives

Basquiat at work by Marion Busch

J

Jean-Michel Basquiat (December 22, 1960 – August 12, 1988) was an American artist of Haitian and Puerto Rican descent. Basquiat first achieved fame as part of SAMO, an informal graffiti duo who wrote enigmatic epigrams in the cultural hotbed of the Lower East Side of Manhattan during the late 1970s, where hip-hop, punk, and street art cultures coalesced. Basquiat transitioned from being homeless and unemployed to selling a single painting for up to $25,000 in a matter of just a hadful of years The early 1980s were Basquiat's breakthrough as a solo artist. In June 1980, Basquiat participated in The Times Square Show, a multi-artist exhibition sponsored by Collaborative Projects Incorporated The Ring, 1981

(Colab) and Fashion Moda where he was noticed by various critics and curators. In particular, Emilio Mazzoli, an Italian gallerist, saw the exhibition and invited Basquiat to Modena, Italy to have his world-first solo show, which later opened on May 23, 1981. In December 1981, RenĂŠ Ricard published "The Radiant Child" in Artforum magazine. In March 1982, he worked in Modena, there again to work on his second Italian exhibition. From November of that same year, Basquiat worked from the ground-floor display and studio space Larry Gagosian had built below his Venice, California, home and commenced a series of paintings for a 1983 show, his second at Gagosian Gallery, then in West Hollywood. He brought along his girlfriend, then-unknown aspiring singer Madonna. Gagosian recalls, "Everything was going along fine. Jean-Michel was making paintings, I was selling them, and we were having a lot of fun. But then one day Jean-Michel said, 'My girlfriend is coming to stay with me.' I was a little concerned - one too many eggs can spoil an omelet, you know? So I said, 'Well, what's she like?' And he said, 'Her name is Madonna and she's going to be huge.' I'll never forget that he said that. So Madonna came out and stayed for a few months and we all got along like one big, happy family." It was during this time he took considerable interest in the work that Robert Rauschenberg was producing at Gemini G.E.L. in West Hollywood, visiting him on several occasions and finding inspiration in the accomplishments of the painter. It was about that time that famed British musician; David Bowie became an early collector of Basquiat's work. In September 1982, Basquiat joined the Annina Nosei Gallery and worked in a basement below the

acutely political and direct in their criticism of colonialism and support for class struggle.

Basquiat's art focused on "suggestive dichotomies", such as wealth versus poverty, integration versus segregation, and inner versus outer experience. He appropriated poetry, drawing, and painting, and married text and image, abstraction, figuration, and historical information mixed with contemporary critique.

By 1986, Basquiat had left the Annina Nosei Gallery and was showing at the Mary Boone Gallery in SoHo. He appeared on the February 10th,1985 cover of The New York Times Magazine in a feature titled "New Art, New Money: The Marketing of an American Artist".

Basquiat typically used social commentary in his paintings as a "springboard to deeper truths about the individual", as well as attacks on power structures and systems of racism, while his poetics were Untitled. 1982

Despite his artistic success in this period, he battled personal demons and (reportedly) began using heroin frequently. Many of his peers speculated that his heroin use was a means of coping with the demands of his newfound fame, the excontinued on pg. 62

ploitative nature of the art industry, and the pressures of being a black man in the white-dominated art world. Sadly, after an unsuccessful attempt at sobriety, he died on August 12, 1988, of an overdose at his studio on Great Jones Street in Manhattan's NoHo neighborhood. He was just 27 years old. In his short life, Basquiat produced around 1500 drawings, as well as nearly 600 paintings Untitled (Skull), 1981

along with many other sculpture and mixed media works. In recogmition of meteoric rise and distinct style, The Whitney Museum of American Art held a retrospective of his work in 1992. On May 18, 2017, at a Sotheby's auction, a 1982 painting by Basquiat depicting a black skull with red and black rivulets (Untitled) set a record high for any American artist at auction, selling for $110.5 million. www.basquiat.com
