California Art Club Celebrates the Golden State’s Rich Artistic Legacy with its 111th Annual Gold Medal Exhibition at the Bowers Museum

T

he California Art Club presents its 111th Annual Gold Medal Exhibition at the Bowers Museum from July 17 to August 21, marking the first time that these two organizations have collaborated to display one of the nation’s most anticipated annual showcases of contemporary-traditional art.

Sally Strand, Pitcher with Pears, Ocean Series, Oil on board, 16 x 20 inches

The exhibition spotlights nearly 250 original paintings and sculptures, created by many of the nation’s foremost representational artists as well as today’s young emerging talent. Subject matter ranges from plein air landscapes, seascapes and urban scenes, to figurative works and contemplative still lifes.

The Annual Gold Medal Exhibitions are curated to emphasize the finest examples of artworks that are grounded on the time-honored skills that were utilized by the pioneering artists who founded the organization in 1909. Many of those early artists were also active with the Brittany Ryan, Midwest Mermaid, Aqua resin with oil paint, 20 x 20 x 32 inches Laguna Art Colony from 1918 to 1935, and their collective works influenced California Impressionism – the first artistic movement defined as purely Californian. To encourage exhibiting artists to create their most important works, the Annual Gold Medal Exhibition is unthemed, providing creative freedom. As a result, the exhibition presents a revealing exploration of topics relating to the global community, ranging from environmental preservation to social interests and cultural perspectives. “We are greatly honored to be presenting the

111th Annual Gold Medal Exhibition at the Bowers Museum under the leadership of Museum President Dr. Peter C. Keller. As the California Art Club strives to represent and serve people of all cultures, it is fitting that we partner with the Bowers Museum whose vision is to ‘celebrate world cultures through their arts,’” says Elaine Adams, the Executive Director and CEO of the California Art Club. California Art Club Michael Obermeyer, CAC President and a prominent Orange Countybased artist, adds, “Visitors to this year's Gold Medal Exhibition are in for a special treat. They can view exceptional works created by current California Art Club artists, as well as paintings by many of the club’s founding members, which are part of the Bowers’ permanent collection and displayed in a separate gallery.” The featured artwork in the 111th Annual Gold Medal Exhibition was juried by a panel of art scholars and artists, and encompasses both classical compositions as well as unexpected interpretations. As a result, the myriad of representational works on view allows viewers to both reconnect with memories they cherish and discover intriguing aspects of daily life in communities near and far. The 187 exhibiting artists include renowned painters Peter Adams, Brian Blood, Warren Chang, Karl Dempwolf, Michael Godfrey, Jean LeGassick, Jennifer Moses, Ray Roberts, Mian Situ, William Stout, and Joseph Todorovitch, as well as sculptors Béla Bácsi, Ish Ordaz, Adam Matano, and Christopher Slatoff. Some of the notable local artists are John Cosby, Rick J. Delanty, Lani Emanuel, Robin Hall, Jeff Horn, Calvin Liang, Michael Obermeyer, Brittany Ryan, Anthony Salvo, Jeff Sewell, Kevin Short, Michael Situ, and Wendy Wirth.

Charles Muench, Cathedrals of the Sierra, Oil on linen, 28 x 36 inches

Frank Eber, Smoke in the Village, Oil on board, 14 x 20 inches

A full slate of educational programs is being offered during the exhibition, allowing art enthusiasts to meet the participating artists and learn more about traditional art forms. The programs include “Meet the Artists” spotlight talks every Saturday, a simultaneous figurative demonstration with both a painter and sculptor, an artistpanel discussion on the topic of “Elements and Extremes in Plein Air Painting,” and a “Paint/Sculpt-Out” with live models in explorer costumes on closing day. Specific program information, including ticket information, is posted at bowers.org/gold.

All artwork is available for acquisition and a portion of the proceeds benefit the California Art Club’s educational programming. For more information about the exhibition, visit californiaartclub.org/goldmedal. Presenting sponsors of the 111th Annual Gold Medal Exhibition include Alyce Williamson.

An ambitious, utopian, and international project, World Wall is rooted in the philosophy that in order to achieve world peace, we must first be able to envision it. Baca painted the first four ten-bythirty-foot canvas panels; as the work traveled abroad, between 1990 and 2014, artists and community groups from Finland, Russia, israel and Palestine, Mexico, and Canada contributed five additional panels, employing figurative and symbolic visual vocabularies to depict a vision of the future without fear. LACMA, one of the most significant contributors to fashion between 1990 and 2010, Lee Alexander Mcqueen (London, 1969–2010) was both a conceptual and technical virtuoso. His critically acclaimed collections synthesized the designer’s proficiency in tailoring and dressmaking with both encyclopedic and autobiographical references that spanned time, geography, media, and technology. The first Mcqueen exhibition on the West Coast, Lee Alexander McQueen: Mind, Mythos, Muse contextualizes the designer’s imaginative work within a canon of artmakers who drew upon analogous themes and visual references. Titled after Alfredo Jaar’s iconic 1987 work, A Logo for America, This Is Not America’s Flag provides a critical discourse on the symbol’s meaning, the complexity and contradictions of contemporary national identity, and artists as active citizens. The exhibition was developed conceptually in the summer of 2020 during the groundswell of activism for racial justice in the wake of the murders of George Floyd, Ahmaud Arbery, and Breonna Taylor and was inspired by two works in the Broad collection, Flag (1967) by Jasper Johns and African-American Flag (1990) by David Hammons. This Is Not America’s Flag presents works from over twenty artists. The exhibition includes works that both embrace the flag as the signifier of the nation and its ideals and subvert it to express injustices and inequities woven into the fabric of the u.S., past and present. Mario Moore | Enshrined: Presence + Preservation, Moore’s first solo exhibition in California, brings together work from early in his career as well as his most recent series, The Work of Several Lifetimes (2019), created with the support of Princeton university’s esteemed Hodder Fellowship. Together, these works represent the artist’s desire to make visible the dedicated work of marginalized groups in this country. For many years, Moore has foregrounded the contributions of essential and frontline workers in his paintings, an effort that has become even more poignant during this time of global pandemic, as their labors have enabled and ensured the well-being of us all. This exhibition brings to light Moore’s commitment to celebrating his subjects—both their labor and leisure. His paintings encourage us to question who is deserving of portraiture and, thus, preservation. This presentation of Enshrined: Presence + Preservation debuts two new portraits made especially for the exhibition at CAAM that feature women who have worked as custodians at the Museum. By recognizing them, Moore provides us with an opportunity to honor all of the workers whose labor, often behind the scenes, is integral to the success of museums such as CAAM. The Legacy of

A

FRANZ KLINE

vibrant, vivid and emotionally-charged world emerged in the painting of the Abstract Expressionist movement during the post-World War II years in New York City. Often polarizing critics, the work of these artists was nothing if not daring. These artists, arguably the most famous of which was Jackson Pollock, painted in a style coined "action painting". The movement was heavily influenced by the ideas of Jean-Paul Sartre who Franz Kline, photo by Aaron Suskind

stated, in his 1946 essay L’Existentialisme est un humanisme, ‘there is no reality except in action’. Action painting was concerned with the act of painting itself - the gesture, the movement of the paint, and the emotional quality of the brushwork. The Abstract Expressionists focused on allowing their paintings and drawings to be spontaneous, sharing traits with how Surrealist painters sought to tap into the subconscious mind by practicing automatic writing, drawing or painting. At the height of the Abstract Expressionism movement in 1952, critic Harold Rosenberg wrote of the movement that "what was to go on canvas was not a picture but an event." Perhaps one of the best examples of an artist whose brushstrokes seem to capture "an event" with immense weight and emotionality is the artist Franz Kline. Kline is best known for his black-and-white paintings, which appear to have spontaneously painted thick black brushstrokes upon white backgrounds. His work has often garnered comparisons to Japanese calligraphy as well as industrial building structures. Interestingly, Kline did not see his work as continued on pg. 44

black on white paintings, but rather he said "I paint the white as well as the black and the white is just as important." Additionally, the only part of the process of his paintings that was truly spontaneous and free-form, was the original sketch, which he notoriously often drew on phone book pages. He then would immensely enlarge his sketches into the monumental paintings that we see as his finished products. So, in reality, what looks improvised is actually quite meticulously planned. Kline's work often references imagery from life, but he commented that he painted "not what I see but the feelings aroused in me by that looking." As seen in a painting like "Chief" (1950, oil on canvas), this painting is named after the name of a locomotive train that passed by Kline's childhood home in Pennsylvania. The painting may seem to recall mechanical structures, movement, power or speed, but also references Kline's childhood memory.

Ballantine, 1958

Kline began his career painting objective work, greatly influenced by Rembrandt. It is said that fellow Abstract Expressionist painter Willem de Kooning introduced Kline to the projector, which allowed Kline to scale up his drawings of chairs on phone book pages. When he first saw his drawing enlarged to such a degree that the image was abstracted, Kline remembers that "a four-by-five inch black drawing of a rocking chair loomed in gigantic black strokes which eradicated any image, the strokes expanding as entities in themselves, unrelated to any entity but that of their own existence." Kline's signature style was born. Interestingly, Kline work was made almost exclusively with house paint for several reasons. Most importantly, it was low viscosity, so it flowed quickly across the canvas, creating the look of a spontaneous gesture. Secondly, Kline did not begin seriously selling his work until about 1960 (after pursuing his art since high school during the late 1920s), so working with an inexpensive paint was Kline's preference and habit. During the 1960s, Kline's gallerist atChief, 1950

tempted to force Kline to switch to fine art-grade paints by breaking into his studio one night and switching his house paints to Windsor-Newton fine art paints. Apparently, Kline went straight back to the hardware store and bought more house paint. Although Kline died at the age of only fifty-two, he left behind an immense legacy. Kline once said "you paint the way you have to in order to give", and he did indeed give an immense amount to the history of art. His structural canvases have inspired new generations of artists from the Minimalists to street artists and will continue to inspire for generations to come.

“A successful work of art cannot be fully conceived and appreciated inde-

pendent of its final placement.” Marc Whitney. I think of my task no differently than El Greco when he created his masterpieces for the churches of Seville with careful consideration of the sanctuary space that would hold his masterpieces. Reflecting East and West coast influences, Whitney’s eclectic and highly personal style encompasses a variety of themes including: interiors, seascapes landscapes, still life florals and custom pieces to fit your space. Below: Professional installers hang one of Whitney’s large original seascapes in the residence of a Marc Whitney collector. Bravo! www.marcwhitney.com. See page 2.

veils New Painting Exhibition: “4x4x15”

This past year, John Wayne Airport (JWA) invited artists throughout Southern California to submit original, contemporary paintings for an abstract, non-representational exhibition. The exhibition is located in the Vi Smith Concourse Gallery and is now on display through March 2023. The John Wayne Airport Arts Commission selected paintings by 15 different artists representing Southern California. Each Arts Commissioner brought a unique mindset to the review and selection process, considering imagery, color, perspective, and texture.
