It has been a busy and hectic week for everyone at the club with the change of managers and numerous other projects beginning to take shape.

I would like to place on record my thanks to Nick Labatte and his team and wish them all the very best for the future.

I am delighted to welcome on board at Eastwood new joint managers Martin Ball and Daryll Thomas. This is their first appointment in management, they will make mistakes, they will find it difficult, but I know that they both have the ability to make a huge success here at Halbrooke stadium.

Some two years ago when I began looking for a project for City Sporting Group to get involved in, Martin Ball was always at the top of my list as I first signed him as a 15-year-old for Carlton Town and I have been proud to watch him grow as a player and now hopefully as a manager. Together with Daryll they have the necessary skill set to help take the club on our next journey. Please be patient but please welcome them both and give them your support.

GoodafternoonEveryoneand welcometotoday’sgame.

Earliest records of Loughborough Men’s football date-back to 1919-20 side, under the name of Loughborough Technical Institute and guidance of Principal Herbert Schofield. In 1920 it became a college of Technology, with the football side winning its first silverware on record in the Northern Junior Cup in 1922.

Loughborough Men won their first University Championship in the 1938/39 season and the Leicestershire Senior League in 1940. After the war they returned to winning ways in the University competition (UAU) from 1947–1953, 1955, 1957 and 1959-1963, 1965, 1966 and 1969. In 1966 Loughborough became a University and also competed in the Leicestershire Senior League Division Two until 1972.

The 1970s was an extremely important decade for the Club. Three more University titles followed and former student and then lecturer, Mike Holliday, took up the reigns of Head Coach, a role he would continue into the mid-90s. Early signs of Mike’s rein included an away victory over a Manchester United XI.

The side waited 35 years for a return to non-league football, entering the Midland Combination for the first time in 2007-08. After silverware in their first season in the shape of the Midlands League Cup, in 2009 Loughborough won promotion as champions to the Midland Football Alliance Loughborough began to establish themselves in the MFA finishing 13th in 2009/10 and 4th in 2019/11. Head Coach Tom Curtis left to take over as National Team Coach of Antigua & Barbuda towards the end of that season. In more recent times Tom has been Head Coach of the England U16s.

2011/12 Stuart McLaren’s first term ended with a 5th place finish in the Midland Football Alliance and victory in the League Cup, the club’s highest ever honour so far. The League Cup was retained in 2012/13 as the side equalled their highest ever league finishing position in the MFA of 4th. In May 2012 the Loughborough University Stadium was opened with a showcase game against a Spurs Academy team.

Many Loughborough Football graduates and staff go on to carve out extremely successful roles in the Professional Game, a trend that continues to this day. Former players include Bob Wilson (former Scotland & Arsenal), Bradley Pritchard (Retired Former Charlton & Leyton Orient), Robbie Simpson (Cheltenham City former Coventry City), Leon McSweeney (Former Northampton Town & Leyton Orient), George Williams (Cambridge United), Connor O’Keefe (Pitea IF – Sweden), Sam Minihan (Stockport County), Ronan Silva (Crawley Town), Tope Fadahunsi (Sutton United).

Other former players and staff are littered throughout the Premiership and EFL, in a coaching and support staff capacity including Kieran McKenna & Charlie Turnbull (Ipswich Town), Eric Ramsay (Manchester United), Sam Erith (England & Manchester City), Nathan Gardiner (formerly Spurs, Fulham), Matthew Prestridge (Middlesborough), Matt Reeves (Leicester City), Jack Robinson, (Liverpool).

In 2014 Loughborough University joined the Midland Football League in its inaugural year. December saw Stuart McLaren depart to take up the post of Manager at Stirling Albion, subsequently moving to Celtic FC Academy where he works with their U18s.

The 2016/17 saw the Scholars have one of their most positive starts to the MFL season in a number of years. However, a disappointing run in from of saw the 16/17 season fall away with the club finishing in 18th out of 22

The 17/18 season also saw the appointment of Richard Allen as Director of Football, in January 2018. Richard joined from the FA where he was head of Talent ID, he has extensive knowledge of academy football with previous roles as Head of Academy at QPR and Head of Recruitment at Tottenham.

In 2018/19 season Alex Ackerley was appointed Head Coach continuing to work alongside Jamie Hawthorne, who has since moved in 2019/20 to work as an Academy Coach at Southampton FC. The season ended in a County Cup Final appearance against Coalville Town, with the Ravens, who play at Step 3, winning the game 4 – 1 at Holmes Park.

The 2019/20 season saw the Scholars celebrate their Centenary as well as a new challenge having been moved laterally during the off season into the Uhlsport United Counties Football League. The scholars were sitting in 4th place in mid March when the 19/20 season was deemed null and void due to the Coronavirus pandemic. Yet again the 2020/21 season was affected by the Covid19 virus and Alex Ackerley and his student coaches, Joel Bonner, Callum Crockard and Ben Day saw the season curtailed in January 2021, whilst sitting at the top of the league. Joel moved to Liverpool’s academy during December 2020 to work with the U16s and Ben to Burton Albion shortly after at the turn of the year. Callum Crockard started 2021/22 on his course placement at Southampton and has now taken up a role within their academy.

The 2021/22 season saw the club return to using the Loughborough Students name across all the teams, both in the leagues and BUCS competitions, with U21s continuing in MFL U21s East. A new chapter for the Scholars started with experienced, former professional player and pro-licence coach, Jamie Clapham arriving in the preseason as the new University Men’s Head Coach, together with the appointment of a new University Football Programme Manager, Harriet Simes, joining from Birmingham City Women, following the departure of Mat Stock to Wolverhampton Wanderers Academy and Alex Ackerley to Sunderland Academy, with everyone building on the foundations that Mat and Alex put in place.

The 21/22 season was a very successful season for Loughborough Students FC with the first team finishing 4th in the United Counties League as well as a record-breaking cup run in the Buildbase FA Vase, reaching the semi-final, before exiting the competition after defeat to Littlehampton Town FC away from home, as well as being crowned BUCS Champions.

Progressing into the 22/23 season, Rebecca Sawiuk has been appointed as Director of Football replacing Richard Allen who has moved onto a new role as Senior Football Executive and Technical Advisor to Yokohama FC based in Japan. We would like to place on record our thanks and appreciation to Richard for all his efforts in developing the Football Programme at the University which included the creation of our Women’s Football Performance Programme. Rebecca was previously a Senior Lecturer at the University of Hertfordshire, she boasts an extensive career in football, including fulfilling roles at Regional Talent Centres, England Talent Camps, London Bees FC (Head Coach), Millwall Women (Manager), Oxford Girls Academy (Technical Director), Watford Football Club’s Boys’ Academy (Lead Coach) and Head Coach of the BT Sport Ultimate Goal series. We look forward to the 22/23 season working with Rebecca, to progress the football programme even further and to build on the fantastic progress already made. You will see some new faces in the squad, not necessarily new students, but players who have worked their way through the programme from U21s to earn their place in the performance squad, we are very much looking forward to another exciting season.

The reaction has been incredible with the statement picking up over 73k views within the first three hours of its release across our Facebook and Twitter platforms. The announcement is also the most viewed article on the club website ever.

Meetthenewmanagers;

‘Bally’ (35) a Carlton Town legend appearing over 200 times for the club captaining the side for over half of them across two spells. As well as Carlton Town, Martin also names Hucknall Town, Grantham Town, Worksop Town and Clifton All Whites amongst his previous clubs. An eight-teen year playing career which came to an end in December for over half that time Martin has represented Carlton Town. Ball progressed through the

CTFC academy system to the first team, making his debut at just seven-teen, where he won the Supporters Player of the Year in the 2009/10 season.

He joined Hucknall Town at the start of the 2010/11 season before joining Grantham Town, helping them win the Evo-Stik League Division 1 South championship in May 2012. Before returning to Carlton earning numerous promotions and play off appearances and a handful of Nottinghamshire Senior Cup wins.

‘DT’ (37) also boasts an extensive playing career having worn the shirts of Nottingham Forest, Chesterfield, Matlock Town, Ilkeston Town, Retford Utd, Carlton Town, Gresley Rovers amongst many more. Daryll began football as a youngster at Nottingham Forest, before moves to Chesterfield and Matlock Town.

In 2006 Thomas signed forms with Carlton Town scoring a hat-trick on his home debut. In a statement on the clubs website Town Chairman Mick Garton said: “The signing of Darryl Thomas is one of the reasons Carlton play at the level we do. He has to go down as one of the greatest goal scorers at our level of football over many years. Daryll went on to score 29 goals for the Millers in the 2007-2008 season and his 32 goals in the 2008-2009 season helped see Carlton make the playoffs before going down to Stocksbridge Park Steels and a certain Jamie Vardy who helped them to victory that night.

Another career highlight as he won promotion via the play-offs to the Northern Premier League with Ilkeston Town, scoring two goals in the semi-final and a goal in the final.

He moved to the London area from Nottingham shortly after and signing for Slough Town. Before returning north with local sides Dunkirk and back for his second spell at Carlton Town.

Speakingtoboththeyhadthistosay;

“We are delighted to be announced as joint managers of ECFC. We would like to thank Darryl and Jamie for the opportunity to take over at this huge club. We have both been around Nottinghamshire non-league football long enough to know that Eastwood is a sleeping giant. We have played our football mainly at step 3 & 4, and Eastwood was always the biggest club in Nottinghamshire and that’s where we believe the club belongs.

We are under no illusions this appointment may raise some eyebrows, but we have always been ambitious as players and that will only enhance as we move into management, which is why we think Eastwood and ourselves are the perfect fit. We have specific ideas and a style of play that we want to implement that centres around exciting, attacking football. We ask for patience from the supporters whilst we work with the players to implement this, with the first priority being keeping us in this league. We have always played in exciting, entertaining football teams and that is exactly what we want to bring to the club. We look forward to joining you all on what promises to be an exciting journey back to where this club belongs!”

If you have any questions feel free to send them into us through Facebook or Twitter.

Eastwood CFC has previous with being a success under the guidance of joint managers, our most successful era has come under managerial double acts Jez Corthorn and Jonathan Wass starting the trend. Before David Marlow and Jonathan Wass earned promotion and back to back lengthy FA Vase runs.
