I love Helsinki. And I feel very loved back by Helsinki too. It is relatively small, which makes it cozy, but it is full of things to do and see. Helsinki has vibrant coffee and food culture from fine dining restaurants to small street market cafés. There is something going on all the time, be it a music festival, a block party or an exciting and beautiful art exhibition. Helsinki’s demeanour is shaped by the sea. Nature surrounds us on all sides and Suomenlinna fortress island is just a short ferry ride away. Now that the weather is much colder, it is time to find out all about indoor events: to read a book in a lovely

café or visit a museum where you’ve not been before. Helsinki Design Guide was created in order to make all these places more accessible to you. With this guide we hope to help you to make the most of your stay in Helsinki. For every issue we have asked a selection of designers and other creative people to recommend the best of Helsinki from their point of view. Let’s have a look at Helsinki as an example of Finnish Design: at a glance it appears functional, safe and livable. It has been built in a sustainable manner making the most out of scarce resources. Everywhere materials are used in a durable and honest way. The strong seasonal changes have led to weather-proof solutions in every detail. Yes, it sounds like a description of a perfect product highlighting the virtues of Finnish Design, but is it slightly boring?

The thankless proof of good design is that it often goes unnoticed. We seldom consciously pay attention to things functioning smoothly and making our everyday lives easier. It could be well-designed daily objects, environments or services – even entire cities like Helsinki. We tend to take them for granted when we get used to them. If we stop and take a closer look at what really makes our everyday lives better it is often the small, inconspicuous things that make

When we manage to combine these factors with pleasing aesthetics, desirable appearance, and rewarding user experiences, we are at the true core of good design. A good designer looks at familiar everyday things as if he or she had never seen them before. Seeing the interesting and novel aspects of things that remain

unnoticed to the rest of us is a core quality of a trained designer. Helsinki might seem dull on the surface, but it offers plenty to experience. FOR BREAKFAST, BRUNCH OR LUNCH? Give us today our daily warm meal Finnish cuisine is an entity of unique, wide-ranging and lively flavours that derive from Finnish nature, history and society. Traditional Finnish food has been influenced by the cuisine of continental Europe and Sweden. Additionally, a common history with Russia adds to its charm and distinguishes Finnish food from other Nordic countries like Sweden or Norway. Finns have also been fast in adopting flavours and dishes from all over the world, which is great in a country where about fifty years ago the potato was far more well-known than pasta and fresh oranges were still a rare treat. In contrast, today in Helsinki you can find a wide range of ethnic food restaurants. In general, Finnish food is kept simple, clean and respectful of the raw ingredientsâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; flavours. In their daily choices Finns keep creating new food culture. Todayâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s popular trends are health, ecology and ethics. Organic and locally produced ingredients are highly valued. Restaurants in Helsinki

are not just following these trends, but are taking a leading role in forming our food culture. A lot of attention is paid to the quality and origin of the ingredients that are used. At home during the week the main point is often to prepare something simple and quick as most mothers work and

children have a lot of after school activities. Then during the weekend families can gather and spend more time on grocery shopping, preparing, cooking and baking. Finns eat their lunch relatively early, traditionally between 11-1pm. Both dinner and lunch are warm meals, but one of them is usually a bit lighter, a salad or soup for example. Many Finnish employers give their workers lunch vouchers, which is why most restaurants have affordable lunch offers around noon.

RESTAURANTS Here are some of the restaurants and cafés we recommend, especially for having breakfast, brunch or lunch! Café Engel opens quite early in the morning, and is a nice place to come for the house breakfast. Sit by the window, admire the view, and during weekdays wait to be served to the table. By lunch time one of the busiest restaurants is Fratello Torrefazione, a favourite for people from nearby shops, offices and the university campus. You might have to wait a little while to get

a table, but the great lunch menu, that changes weekly, is totally worth it. Finns are accustomed to eating a warm meal for lunch, and most restaurants have a reasonably-priced midday menu. Around the corner from the city centre, in Kruununhaka, is a cosy restaurant called Qulma which serves a great combination lunch of a soup or baked potato buffet. In Qulma you can see artists, politicians and house moms eating side by side. Opposite the Parliament House, next to the Kiasma Museum of Contemporary Art, is the Helsinki Music Centre, promoting a policy of openness and approachability. Its café also serves simple but delicious lunches. For snack-type food a great pick would be falafel restaurant Fafa’s, that has friendly service, good portions and is also excellent for vegetarians, or alternatively Rulla, that serves fresh Vietnamese finger food with Scandinavian ethical thinking. There are many amazing quality dinner places in Helsinki, for example Salutorget, that finely combines modern and classic, and also brewery restaurant Bryggeri Helsinki, that opened last summer. Helsinki’s younger generation in particular loves to have a Saturday morning brunch at Moko Market & Café, where one can enjoy a relaxed atmosphere, get inspiration for home decoration, and chill with friends.

Aleksi Kuokka Aleksi Kuokka is one of the driving forces in the new generation of Finnish designers. Trained as an industrial designer, Kuokka works as an associate in Aivan Design Studio. In his design, he leans on the strong legacy of the masters of Finnish designâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s golden age. Kuokka seeks the core of design where functionality meets a stripped-down form and attracts the users through its simplicity. For Iittala, he has designed both the Sarjaton glass and the Ote glass.

DESIGN OF COFFEE An average Finn drinks ten kilograms of roasted coffee annually. Most Finns would have at least one cup of coffee every day. Normally coffee is not drunk alone but instead enjoyed socially, and often accompanied by an excellent companion: the sweet bun, flavoured with sugar, cardamom and cinnamon, which is called “pulla”. A Korvapuusti is a form of pulla that is made by rolling the dough up with a layer of butter and cinnamon in between. To get to know more about Helsinki’s coffee culture, we asked a few questions from a friend at Helsinki Design Guide, the experienced barista and coffee trainer Antti Mäkinen.

Heikki Ruoho “For me, form alone is never the start of the design process. More than anything, I look at the life of the object: what is it used for and how. What language does the object speak, how is it made, and how can it be made better? Form is only one part of the whole, of the object’s DNA. The final product always has to be more than the sum of its parts.” Heikki Ruoho (b. 1969) is an industrial and furniture designer. He received his formal education at the Lahti Institute of Design (BA), and at the University of Art and Design Helsinki (MA). Ruoho has worked as a freelance designer since 1997. In 2003, he and Teemu Järvi set up the Järvi & Ruoho design office. Alongside his design work, Ruoho lectures and teaches product and furniture design in the industry’s leading teaching institutions. 54

Inni Pärnänen Inni Pärnänen has worked as a jewelry designer since the end of the 1990s and exhibited regularly in Finland and abroad. The excitement for her lies in the possibilities offered by the unusual materials she uses: parchment paper, cow horn, wax, copper and paint, to name a few. Paper flower rings, parchment paper brooches in the shape of a leaf or a bud, necklaces with little flowers made of cow horn – Pärnänen’s jewels take their form from nature while their delicacy and translucence comes from the materials used.

Alvar Aalto, (1898–1976) one of the best Finnish architects of all times, has been nicknamed “the master of light” and “the father of modernism”. His design was often more than just a building, it was (and still is) a philosophy of living, a piece of art that is designed to communicate and blend in with its surrounding nature and create an ease of living by being highly functional. Restaurant Puro You can begin the day by having breakfast at Restaurant Puro, which is located on the rooftop of Sähkötalo (‘Electric Building’), designed by Alvar Aalto. On a sunny day its terrace offers a pleasant view across the rooftops of Kamppi. Many of the Aalto buildings are a piece of art themselves since every detail from the furniture to the lighting has been composed by its architect. functionalism. The house is a cosy and intimate building, built from uncluttered materials, and designed for living and working. Finlandia Hall (1962/1967-75) Finlandia Hall itself exhibits many of the ideas that Aalto experimented with during his lifelong preoccupation with monumental building construction. It is not, however, a functional creation, in the sense of a building whose forms are dictated solely by its practical functions and the associated structural solutions. Café Aalto at Academic Bookstore (1961–69) Located in the heart of Academic Bookstore, the interior of Café Aalto is also designed by Aalto. It is an oasis for both book and culture lovers, where one can enjoy pies, salads, sandwiches and cakes while admiring the vast amount of books on display. Restaurant Savoy The dining hall at Restaurant Savoy (1937) is an important part of Finnish design history. The interior was initially designed

TRAVELING IN THE CITY The best ways to get around Helsinki are walking, cycling and public transport. Our public transport is efficient, affordable and pretty much always on time, even throughout winter. Sometimes though, in severe weather conditions, some delays are possible. The best way to find information about getting around, ticket prices and public transportation timetables is to visit Helsinki Region Transport website www.hsl.fi/en. But here also are some useful tips and information! Did you know about tickets? If you use public transport occasionally, you can buy a single ticket from a ticket machine, bus or tram driver, or a conductor on a commuter train. With a single ticket you can transfer from one bus, tram, or train to another while the ticket is still valid.

Tram tickets are valid only on trams and they are available only from ticket machines. In Helsinki, you can also buy a single ticket by mobile phone. The ticket is valid within Helsinki. Please note that on bus services the use of the ticket is limited to certain bus routes.

HOW TO GET ONLINE IN HELSINKI? For a traveller there are many useful services online, like finding out what happens in Helsinki today, maps, bus schedules or navigation. A fear of roaming costs makes one want to use free wi-fi connections instead of 3G, but where to find it and how to get there? In Helsinki connecting is made easy. Your hotel is most likely to offer a good free internet connection. A network of hotspots in public buildings, civic squares and even some buses and trams have broadband connection.
