WELCOME TO HELSINKI! I love Helsinki. And I feel very loved back by Helsinki too. It is relatively small which makes it cozy, but it is full of things to do and see. Helsinki has vibrant coffee and food culture from fine dining restaurants to small street market cafes. There is something going on all the time, a music festival, a block party or an exciting & beautiful art exhibition. Helsinki’s demeanour is shaped by the sea. Nature surrounds us from all around and it’s easy to catch a ferry to Suomenlinna fortress island. Now that the weather is so cold, it is time to find out all about indoor events, to read a book in a lovely cafe or visit a museum where you’ve not been

before. Helsinki Design Guide was created in order to make all those places more accessible to you. With this guide we hope to help you to make the most of your stay in Helsinki. Let’s have a look at Helsinki as an example of Finnish Design: at a glance it appears functional, safe and livable. It has been built in a sustainable manner making the most out of scarce resources. Everywhere materials are used in a durable and honest way. The strong seasonal changes have led to weather proof solutions in all details. Yes, it sounds like a description of a perfect product highlighting the virtues of Finnish Design, but is it slightly boring? The thankless proof of good design is

Naoto Niidome Designer Naoto Niidome (b. 1974 Helsinki) has studied Interior Architecture and Furniture Design as well as Fashion Design in the University of Art and Design in Helsinki (Aalto University). His design is characterized by timelessly beautiful lines, three-dimensionality, experimentation with materials and techniques. Niidome has designed products for many brands in Finland and abroad. His work has been noted and awarded several times by different institutions.

Finns are prepared for every season Finland is known as a country where good design is appreciated. Origins for the form of Finnish design can be found in clean and beautiful nature and form that follows function. Design and art have been inspiration and backbone in building the identity for a young nation that is a meeting point between east and west. FOR BREAKFAST, BRUNCH OR LUNCH? Finnish cuisine is an entity of unique, wide-ranging and lively flavours that derive from Finnish nature, history and society. Traditional Finnish food has been influenced by the cuisine of continental Europe and Sweden. Additionally, a common history with Russia adds to its charm and distinguishes Finnish food from other Nordic countries like Sweden or Norway. Finns have also been fast in adopting flavours and dishes from all over the world, which is great in a country where about fifty years ago potato was far more known than pasta and fresh oranges still a rare treat. a lot of after school activities. Then during the weekend families can gather and spend more time on grocery shopping, preparing, cooking and baking Finns eat their lunch relatively early, traditionally between 11-1pm. Both dinner and lunch are warm meals, but one of them is usually lighter type of meal, a salad or soup. Many Finnish employers give their workers a lunch vouchers and that is why most restaurants have affordable lunch offer during noon.

RESTAURANTS Here are some of the restaurants and cafes we recommend for especially for having breakfast, brunch or lunch! Café Engel opens quite early in the morning, and is a nice place to come for the house breakfast. Sit by the window, admire the view and during weekdays wait to be served to the table. By lunch time one of the busiest restaurants is Fratello Torrefazione, a favourite for people from nearby shops, offices and university campus. You might have to wait a little while to get a table,

but a great weekly changing lunch menu is totally worth it. Finns are accustomed to eating a warm meal for lunch, and most restaurants have a reasonably priced midday menu. Around the corner from the city centre, in Kruununhaka is a cosy restaurant called Qulma which serves a great combination lunch of a soup or baked potato buffet. In Qulma you can see artists, politicians and house moms eating side by side.Opposite the Parliament house, next to the Kiasma Museum of Contemporary Art, is Helsinki Music Centre promoting a policy of openness and approachability. Its café also serves simple but delicious lunches. For snack type of food a great pick would be falafel restaurant Fafa’s that has friendly service, good portions and is also excellent for vegetarians or Rulla that serves fresh Vietnamese finger food with Scandinavian ethical thinking.There are many amazing quality dinner places in Helsinki for example Salutorget that finely combines modern and classic and brewery restaurant Bryggeri Helsinki that opened last summer. Especially the younger generation in Helsinki loves to have a Saturday morning brunch at Moko Market & Café, where one can enjoy a relaxed atmosphere, get inspiration for home decoration and chill with friends.

Aleksi Kuokka Aleksi Kuokka is one of the driving forces in the new generation of Finnish designers. Trained as an industrial designer, Kuokka works as an associate in Aivan Design Studio. In his design, he leans on the strong legacy of the masters of Finnish designâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s golden age. Kuokka seeks the core of design where functionality meets a stripped-down form and attracts the users through its simplicity. For Iittala, he has designed both the Sarjaton glass and the Ote glass.

DESIGN OF COFFEE An average Finn drinks ten kilograms of roasted coffee annually. Most Finns would have at least a cup of coffee every day. Often coffee is not drank alone but it is a social habit and also accompanied by amazing side-kick, a sweet bun flavoured with sugar, cardamom and cinnamon, called “pulla”. Korvapuusti is a form of pulla, that comes out with dough being rolled with layer of butter and cinnamon. To get to know more of the coffee culture of Helsinki, we asked few questions from a friend of Helsinki Design Guide, an experienced barista and coffee trainer Antti Mäkinen.

Antti, what are the factors behind Helsinki’s vibrant coffee culture? Coffee culture has been developing in rapid pace. In Helsinki a lot of people who work with coffee industry know each other, so there are great opportunities for co-operating. Much of the secret behind good coffee life in Helsinki is the small local coffee roasteries and vibrant small cafés

that pay attention in great detail of good raw materials. So how is good coffee designed? Making quality coffee is time consuming. Quality coffee is hand picked, carefully selected and hand roasted. Good results require a fair amount of working hours and workmanship. Good coffee is not a

foregone conclusion but a product of highquality research and development process. Sometimes that process includes long search and missteps on the way. And how to recognise a good café? Heikki Ruoho “For me, form alone is never the start of the design process. More than anything, I look at the life of the object: what is it used for and how. What language does the object speak, how is it made, and how can it be made better? Form is only one part of the whole, of the object’s DNA. The final product always has to be more than the sum of its parts.” Heikki Ruoho (b. 1969) is an industrial and furniture designer. He received his formal education at the Lahti Institute of Design (BA), and at the University of Art and Design Helsinki (MA). Ruoho has worked as a freelance designer since 1997. In 2003, he and Teemu Järvi set up the Järvi & Ruoho design office. Alongside his design work, Ruoho lectures and teaches product and furniture design at the trade’s leading teaching institutions. 54

GLÖGI – A DRINK DESIGNED FOR THIS SEASON Cinnamon, cardamom, cloves, almonds and other spices bring Finns warmth in the coldness of the winter. Every home, restaurant, cafe and bar has created their own version of glögi, the festive drink of this season. But what is it exactly? Ingredients for a great night out can be simple yet still sometimes so intriguing. Best evenings are born out of momentum, good company, great eat and drink, an authentic experience of living in the magic of a moment in an evening that feels like it never ends. When during summer Finns party a lot more outside in festivals, parks and beaches, in the winter it’s a different ball game. Winters highlights are celebrating Christmas and New Year and for this Finns have created special drink called glögi. Glögi was originally spiced strong alcohol drink used to warm up mailmen

and messengers riding or skiing in the cold weather. During the 19th century it became slowly less strong by it’s alcohol volume and more celebratory drink served at Christmas parties. Glögi preparation begins by boiling water and adding spices to it. Typical spices are cloves, cinnamon, cardamom, ginger and bitter orange peels. After boiling and sifting, strong blackcurrant juice, rum or other alcohol is added. Glögi can also be made with wine. Glögi is often served with almonds and raisins. Glögi can be served as an aperitif or with dessert.

Alvar Aalto, (1898–1976) one of the best Finnish architects of all times, has been nicknamed “the master of light” and “the father of modernism”. His design was often more than just a building, it was (and still is) a philosophy of living, a piece of art that is designed to communicate and blend in with its surrounding nature and create an ease of living by being highly functional. Aalto dreamed of a city with green areas extending into the centre like arteries and elks roaming in them, and it is not far

from how Helsinki looks even today. Importance of his works to the architecture of the twentieth century is still growing. Aaltos understanding of people as a part of the diversity and complexity of nature is completely in harmony with today’s new ecological way of thinking. Helsinki has several buildings designed by Aalto, many of them open for the public. Why not spend some time by his work and get inspired for life?

Restaurant Puro You can begin the day by having breakfast at Restaurant Puro, which is located at the rooftop of Sähkötalo ‘Electric Building’ designed by Alvar Aalto. On a sunny day its terrace offers a nice view across the rooftops of Kamppi. Many of the Aalto buildings are a piece of art themselves since every detail from the furniture to lighting has been composed by its architect. The restaurant offers pure and simplistic flavours for breakfast, lunch and Saturday brunch. (Breakfast is served 7.30–9.30 am, lunch 10.30–2 pm). Aalto House and Studio Aalto These are located in Munkkiniemi, a bit further out from the city centre, and give a great insight to Aalto’s architecture. He designed a home for his family, and office for himself and his wife to use. Aalto House dates from 1936 and represents the shift in Alvar Aalto’s architecture towards a softer form of functionalism. The

Finlandia Hall (1962/1967-75) Finlandia Hall itself exhibits many of the ideas that Aalto experimented with during his lifelong preoccupation with monumental building construction. Restaurant Savoy The dining hall of Restaurant Savoy (1937) is an important part of Finnish design history. The interior was initially designed by Aino and Alvar Aalto. TRAVELING IN THE CITY Best ways to get around Helsinki are walking, cycling and public transport. Our public transport is efficient, affordable and pretty much always in time, even throughout winter. In case of a lot of overnight snowfall, in the morning the transport system personnel work very hard to keep the roads clear and buses, trains and trams running, but sometimes in severe weather conditions some delays are possible. Best way to find information about how to travel around, ticket prices and public transportation timetables is to visit Helsinki Region Transport website www.hsl.fi/en but here also some tips and information! Did you know about tickets? If you use public transport occasionally, you can buy a single ticket from a ticket machine, bus or tram driver, or a conductor on a commuter train. With a single ticket you can transfer from one vehicle to another

within the validity of the ticket. Tram tickets are valid only on trams and they are available only from ticket machines. In Helsinki, you can also buy a single ticket by mobile phone. The ticket is valid within Helsinki. Please note that on bus services the use of the ticket is limited to certain bus routes.
