Description: One of the responsibilities of a project manager is to bring out the best in his team. This includes building a good team and encouraging and motivating its members. There are five ways that can help managers to build their team effectively: 1. Help members in learning and developing. If team members start thinking that their skills are not suitable for the job, their motivation will start decreasing and they will lose interest in team work. To avoid this, you should always help them in learning and developing their skills set. You can do this by arranging seminars, training sessions and conferences or give them a small project where there is opportunity to learn. 2. Assign work step by step. Another way to increase a team’s competence is to assign team members some task, which they are good at. Remember don’t haste in delivering task or don’t be too slow either. When a member losses confidence, it’s better to give him some responsibility and stick around until he/she becomes confident with his work. 3. Focus on the strength of team members. As a manager you have the responsibility of assigning task according to the capabilities of the team members. Try to assign task to the members which they are good at or enjoy doing. The motivation of employees often increases when they have tasks that interest them. 4. Be supportive. A traditional and most used approach to boost confidence of the employees is to support them and build them emotionally. A manager can best utilize this approach by building one to one relation with an employee. A manger needs to be a good listener and also should be able to make employees understand their responsibilities. There are many other ways to support employees. For example, by giving them incentives and rewards or perhaps by praising the team members and providing positive feedback. A good manager is one whose employees feel a sense of belongingness. 5. Embrace failure. One more way to constructively build the confidence and motivation of the employees is to tell them that it is normal to make mistakes. Employees feel much safer when they are not afraid of mistakes. In fact such employees get more productive towards attainment of team goals and experiment with new ideas. These employees also do well at learning and incorporating the knowledge to their tasks. A success of a manager relies on the success of his team. Therefore he shall work on the above steps to make his team more confident, motivated and eventually successful.
