MUSCLES CRAMPS: CAUSES, PREVENTIONS AND TREATMENTS Muscles cramps are extremely painful especially when it triggers while a person is asleep. Usually it causes severe pain in your legs that lasts for few seconds to several minutes. The main target of muscles cramps are legs, particularly thigh, calf and foot. Muscle cramps are strong, which causes contraction and tightening of muscles. This type of pain is also referred as charley horse which often occurs at the time you wake up or are falling asleep. It is quite common among adults but its frequency increases with age. CAUSES There might be a variety of conditions or activities that cause muscle cramps but unfortunately, people are unable to figure out the actual cause behind it. However, some of the possible causes are shared below:      

The occurrence of muscle cramps is quite common during exercise, injury or overuse of muscles. Its rate is relatively frequent in cold temperatures or during winters. Certain medications can also be its cause such as steroids, birth control pills, antipsychotics and diuretic. Dehydration is also considered as one of its causes as the body loses too much fluid. Patients suffering from disease related to kidney, multiple sclerosis, thyroid and peripheral arterial diseases may experience such symptoms. It also common among women in there later month of pregnancy because their body may lack important minerals and nutrients such as calcium and magnesium.

TREATMENTS It is easy to treat muscle cramp as massage is considered as the most effective way to treat them. Some of the ways to treat muscles cramp are discussed that can provide relief for the pain in your legs. 

 

Drinking plenty of water and juices is helpful in treating muscles cramps as water is essential to keep your body hydrated. Athletes usually prefer consuming sports drinking which are much helpful in avoiding muscles cramps during exercises or events. As mentioned above, massaging with oil on the affected area not only provides relief in the symptoms but it helps out in preventing such pains. Ice massages are also good for providing relief and if affected area is massaged with ice pack for at least 10 minutes then you can visibly notice the difference in swelling. Make sure you follow the steps of massage with your hands as well.

Applying analgesic balm can provide same effect as an ice pack and gives a soothing result. Make sure that you have read instructions before its application over the affected area and also rinse your hands thoroughly after applying the balm.

However, it is suggested that if you do not find relief after trying all the discussed home remedies then you should consult your doctor as it can be a sign of a more serious issue you might be confronting.
