Social Media: Corrupting the Minds of Young Generation Have you ever wished that smartphones were never invented? If yes, then you are not alone. Around 81 percent of people at some point of time have felt repulsion from this technology. According to a research conducted, this constitutes of 21 percent teenagers and 37 percent senior citizen. Social media has no doubt created immense benefits for people. With ample of information, entertainment and freedom of speech, it has captivated people of all ages. Though new generation has mastered the art of social media communication, they accept the disadvantages caused by social platforms like Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, Gmail and others. In the light of youngster’s opinions, we have highlighted some of the social media drawbacks:
Perfect Body Image: Body shaming has become a part of our society which has severely affected young generation. Flawless pictures of the photoshopped models on every media causes insecurities in teenagers about their looks and body. They use different applications to click perfect pictures and use layers of makeup to appear faultless. This creates problems in self-acceptance. Campaigns like ‘love your body’ aims to reduce the stereotyping of beauty standards.
Lack of Emotions: The face-less communication has caused people to become emotionally deprived. Texting and use of emoticons convey the feelings that are generally not heartfelt. People are unable to understand the genuine feelings of others and chances of distraction are high when a person is texting to several people at a time. Words like ‘lol’ and ‘rofl’ have become the certified response to jokes, even when they are not funny. Because of social platform, the young generation lacks empathy.
Time Consuming: With so many social media applications loaded with latest news, it gets difficult to concentrate on other aspects of life. Even posting and commenting irrelevantly creates a sense of fulfilment and approval from other people. Once posted, the time is then spent on waiting for ‘likes’ or ‘appreciative comments’. Young generation finds scrolling social media aimlessly
much pleasurable than family time. Time spent on social media effects physical activities, friends, family and loved ones.
Cyber bullying: While many activists are standing against cyber bullying, it continues to persist. Whether it’s commenting on a poorly written blog or on a picture which is less than perfect, people do not refrain from hurting others. The prejudiced opinions create mayhem on the social media which ignites cyber bullying. The laden insecurities of people harm the young minds and pushes them into an emotional turmoil. While we cannot deny the benefits of social media, we still have a lot to learn on the adverse effects it’s causing our young generation. The acquirement of popularity and lack of compassion can devastate the societal norms.
