Developed as an energy absorber in the aerospace industry, cylindrical structures were found to be one of nature’s strongest forms; a form that could offer the greatest impact absorption for a given length. The Mips® safety system is designed to provide added safety for helmets in many accidents. For certain impacts, the Mips system can reduce harmful forces that might otherwise be transferred to the user’s head.
TRADITIONAL HELMET
Traditional helmets are designed and tested for straight impacts, but most impacts are angled, which can cause rotational motion to the head.
The rotational motion can cause brain injuries.
The Low Friction Layer is intended to help reduce the rotational motion to the head in certain angled impacts.
The brain is typically more sensitive to rotational motion than linear motion because it has shear properties similar to water or gel. When different parts of the brain move relative to each other because of rotational motion, the tissues can stretch, which can cause concussions or other brain injuries.
Rotational motion is a common cause for concussions and more severe brain injury in oblique hits to the head. The Mips system consists of a low friction layer that is mounted inside the helmet. In a crash, the low friction layer is designed to move slightly inside the helmet to help redirect forces away from the head. This is intended to help reduce the risk of brain injury.
Most traditional helmets are designed for straight impacts, but most impacts are angled. The low friction layer may reduce the rotational force of angled impacts.
Unlike traditional helmets, which are mainly designed and tested for straight impacts, the Mips system’s low-friction layer mimics the brain’s own system for protection against rotational motion.
Ultimate integration starts with the precise fit of the Smith goggle and helmet. Our helmets are designed to match the curvature of the goggle frame, eliminating “gaper gap” and allowing precise alignment between the helmet AirEvac™ and the goggle venting systems.
Goggles fog when standard helmets trap warm, moist air in the goggle chamber. Smith’s AirEvac™ ventilation systems generate maximum airflow that pulls warm, fog-causing air out of the goggle. The warm air is allowed to exhaust out of the top of the goggle and begin its path through the helmet’s AirEvac™ system.
The warm air that originally built up in the goggle has been forced out via the AirEvac™ ventilation system, has traveled through the AirEvac™ EPS vent channels, and is now being exhausted at the furthest distance possible from the goggle. Ultimate integration between goggle and helmet from start to finish.

Temperature control is the most important feature when considering how to enjoy the entire day on the hill. Our Dual Regulator ventilation system independently controls the front and rear sections of the helmet’s venting, allowing you to moderate your body temperature even in extremely cold conditions. By exhausting heat through the rear vents while maintaining a sealed front end, your body can effectively cool down if needed and avoid the dreaded “ice cream headache.”
Adjustable, easy to use and extremely effective climate control, our low profile Regulator ventilation system allows you to modify the amount of airflow and heat exhaust even with a gloved hand.
Airflow ventilation utilizes strategically placed vents for easy climate control in all conditions. Vent placement maximizes airflow and heat exhaustion in warm temperatures while minimizing undesired cold air drafts. Fabric flaps in the lining design on certain models allow you to open and close the airflow vents for adjustable comfort.

The UV and visible light activated Glacier Photochromic lens is less temperature sensitive than a traditional photochromic lens with a light transmission range from 45% to 7% that adapts dynamically to variations in light. ChromaPop™ delivers color and contrast-boosting performance throughout the full range of the lens, so you always have the best possible view. Removable and ventilated side shields add peripheral light coverage, and low-profile, adjustable temple arms let you customize the fit. A goggle-inspired retainer strap adds the security to keep them in place through technical ascents and high-speed descents.

Constructed from durable Evolve™ frame material and flexible TPU used in Smith goggles, the Wildcat provides coverage and protection like a goggle with the airflow and comfort of a sunglass. Equipped with two-position nose pads and megol temples for no-slip fit, the Wildcat also comes with a bright light ChromaPop™ lens, and a secondary clear lens for low light overcast days.

In an effort to better address the differences in Smith fit descriptions and to help understanding of face and head shapes we are updating our fit language to: Low Bridge (replacing Asia fit for goggles) and Round Contour (replacing Asia fit for helmets.
Low Bridge Fit goggles sit more comfortably and securely on faces with a smaller or lower nose bridge and/or a wide or high cheekbone shape. Choosing the right fit will improve the comfort and performance of your goggles.
To determine the best fit for your face, look at where the bridge of your nose sits relative to your pupils. The bridge is the boney, saddle-shaped area at the top of your nose. If it’s level with or below your pupils, consider our Low Bridge fit options for the best possible feel and fit experience.
Round Contour Fit helmets are sized for a fit and feel that better matches rounder head shapes. Choosing the right helmet fit will improve the comfort and performance of your helmet.

In a continued effort into the winter 24/25 season — Smith is continuing their move toward zero plastic waste within their packaging offering and continuing their gogglesoc partnership.
The packaging updates include discontinuation of all plastic waste across new packaging of winter sports & eyewear products, including the removal of plastic windows on goggle boxes and plastic polybags previously used for lens and goggle protection.
