Developed as an energy absorber in the aerospace industry, cylindrical structures were found to be one of nature’s strongest forms; a form that could offer the greatest impact absorption for a given length. Koroyd® utilizes cylinders to create a structure that behaves differently than traditional protection materials. Traditional materials act like a spring which stores energy and then releases it, Koroyd® is a true energy absorber which converts the kinetic energy by crumpling. WHAT IS MIPS?

The Mips® safety system is designed to provide added safety for helmets in many accidents. For certain impacts, the Mips system can reduce harmful forces that might otherwise be transferred to the user’s head.

TRADITIONAL HELMET

Traditional helmets are designed and tested for straight impacts, but most impacts are angled, which can cause rotational motion to the head.

BRAIN DAMAGE

The rotational motion can cause brain injuries.

STRAIGHT VS ANGLED IMPACTS

The Low Friction Layer is intended to help reduce the rotational motion to the head in certain angled impacts.

The brain is typically more sensitive to rotational motion than linear motion because it has shear properties similar to water or gel. When different parts of the brain move relative to each other because of rotational motion, the tissues can stretch, which can cause concussions or other brain injuries.

Rotational motion is a common cause for concussions and more severe brain injury in oblique hits to the head. The Mips system consists of a low friction layer that is mounted inside the helmet. In a crash, the low friction layer is designed to move slightly inside the helmet to help redirect forces away from the head. This is intended to help reduce the risk of brain injury.

SAFETY SYSTEM THAT MIMICS THE BRAIN

Unlike traditional helmets, which are mainly designed and tested for straight impacts, the Mips system’s low-friction layer mimics the brain’s own system for protection against rotational motion.

SUPERIOR AERODYNAMICS AND PROTECTION DESIGNED FOR RACEDAY

AERODYNAMIC WIND TUNNEL DATA

No one questions wind tunnel data and we are not about to start. However, the science does require expertise. Through a partnership with the University of Washington wind tunnel and world-renowned aerodynamicist Len Brownlie, we tested the Jetstream TT helmet against the current best-in-class helmets using the Wind Averaged Drag (WAD) methodology. This Methodology was developed for the automobile industry decades ago but at Brownlie’s direction, has been modified for cycling-specific tests.

To make it as simple as possible for athletes and consumers to understand, the WAD method aggregates the drag measurements from several discrete yaw angles into a single “wind averaged” measure of drag. This provides final estimated time savings for 40k and 180k time trials.

RESULTS

Whether you’re talented enough to hold an elite level pace of 32 mph for 40K, or if 25mph for 40K is more in reach, you’ll appreciate the best-in-class aerodynamics of the Jetstream TT. Regardless of pace, all riders will benefit from the progressive protection of Koroyd® and the amplified color and enhanced definition of the ChromaPop™ shield.

For Jetstream testing, at 30mph and 0 yaw, 95% Confidence Interval is +/- 4 g (+/-0.99%). Jetstream data was collected at a later date with a time trial-specific aerodynamic rider model and may not be compared directly to that of Ignite and Trace.

The MAG quick-release magnetic lens change system enables rapid transitions to easily match varying light conditions. Riders can quickly alternate between the included bright-light and low-light ChromaPop™ lenses, which deliver precision detailed optics and impact protection. The ODS4 Rx adaptor is a performance nose piece and optical lens carrier that integrates seamlessly to fit all, Ruckus PivLock™, Reverb PivLock™, and Flywheel models. The stainless steel adaptor easily snaps into place to provide the corrective vision required while maintaining an amazing field of view and lens interchangeability. VLT - VISIBLE LIGHT TRANSMISSION

The VLT rating on Smith lenses shows how much light passes through them. The higher the VLT rating, the more light comes through that lens. Lower VLT rated lenses are good for bright, sunny days, whereas higher rated lenses are best in cloudy or low light situations.
