here’s a significant untapped market in athletic eyewear and ample opportunity to educate your patients and clients about the need for proper athletic eyewear to increase safety and enhance performance. The need couldn’t be more glaring. The Vision Council surveyed over 10,000 Americans who were plano sunglass and Rx sunglass users in 2016, and published the results in their May 2016 VisionWatch Sports Sunglass report. Granted, the research only covers outdoor sports, but the results are nonetheless interesting for anyone in professional eyewear retailing.

The stark fact is that fewer than 15 per cent of respondents said they had purchased sunglasses or goggles specifically to be used for sports activities. Those who had played sports in the previous year were far more likely to have purchased sports sunwear than those who did not, with winter

sports and road sports enthusiasts (road cycling and motocross) topping the list. There’s a lot of room for growth in these categories, and huge room for growth in sports such as water skiing and fishing, mountain sports such as rock climbing and hiking, competitive sports like baseball and soccer, and extreme sports such as skateboarding and ATV riding. Over 73 per cent of respondents stated that they primarily use sunglasses when participating in sports. This can be a big mistake when it comes to protecting your eyes and your vision, because most sunglasses are not tested for impact resistance. departments found that baseball was the most common cause of eye-related injuries, followed by soccer and hiking. And research from The Vision Council found that while approximately 200,000 sportsrelated eye injuries happen to children each year, ninety per cent of these could be prevented with protective sports eyewear. There is an abundance of amazing athletic eyewear on the market, with manufacturers continually striving to outdo one another.
