Wonder what the difference is between escort and place cards? Escort cards are found in one place organized alphabetically and include the guest's name and their table number to "escort" the guest to their seat. Place cards are found on the table at each plate to show guests their "place", table numbers are not included on these. Either place, or escort, these cards are fun and so super easy to make. You can even print your names in your favorite font on paper and trace them for perfect penmanship.

Floral Tape

Chancey Charm Charleston

Green Wax String

Florals /Tiger Lily

Scissors

Floral garlands have maintained a firm place in popular wedding decor, with greenery runners of eucalyptus or magnolia and mixed greens as a close second. So why not spin the trend in a fresh direction with ferns? Their ruffled texture is soft yet linear, making them an ideal botanical edging.

Steps / 1 | Collect your materials. 2 | Create an attachment point with the

green wax string. A sturdy loop is

perfect. 3 | Gather 2-3 stems of fern and your

attachment point and fix them together

with floral tape.

4 | Using your floral tape, continue to add

2-3 stems of fern every inch until your

desired length of garland is reached.

5 | To make it easier to secure, continue to

use the green wax string and loop one

end of the roll through the attachment

point. Make sure the string is long

enough to secure it around the table (or

whereever you are planning to use it).

Command hooks work wonders!

6 | Once in place, fill in the garland with

extra fern stems for a fuller look. For a

pop of color, tuck in a few flowers.

PLAYDATE: AUGUSTA In the halls of a historic Southern mansion, we gathered a few talented photographers for our first Smitten Playdate. They played with incredible fashion and florals while trying a variety of photography techniques: double exposure, shooting with prisms and mirrors. The synergy ignited as peers chatted and collaborated about their passion and businesses. Lead by international photographer, Izzy Hudgins, the group captured some truly beautiful images and personal insights.

BROOKE & KEVIN GORDON NEWLYWEDS

A FRESH LOOK AT FIRST LOOKS N E W LYWEDS, BRO OKE + K EV IN, DES C RIB E TH EIR EXPERIENC E

Whether or not to do a first look is a very personal decision, and although photographers and planners will likely encourage them, it's really up to the couple. Doing a first look is a wonderful opportunity to have a truly connected private moment with your beloved before the wedding whirlwind commences. Here are a bride and groom's separate accounts of their beautifully emotional first moment. His Point of View The first look was the most emotional five minutes of my life, hands down. It felt like I had just settled down with my groomsmen and we were comfortably waiting for the party to start when the wedding planner came to tell me that my bride was ready for me. I couldn’t help but be emotional. My heart started racing, my palms started sweating – it was the real deal, it was finally time for me to see Brooke. As I was leaving the room for the garden where she would be, I could hear my brother over everyone else screaming, “Don’t pass out!”. On the walk outside, my heartbeat started climbing in my throat, I tried to concentrate more and more on my breathing, and I realized that I could hardly remember the instructions given to me by the photographer.

62 | S M I T T E N M A G A Z I N E /

vol 12

I got to the garden first and was handed a letter that Brooke had written to me just a few days before. Before I began to read, I took a deep breath and collected myself. It only took the first few sentences of her letter to bring on the tears. As I continued to read, I kept telling myself how lucky I was to be marrying such a loving and caring person. Brooke is, by far, the most selfless person I have ever met. Never in my dreams did I ever believe that I would find someone like her. Then it happened. Just as I was finishing her letter, Brooke placed her hand on my shoulder. As I began to turn around, it felt like everything was moving in slow motion, and as soon as I saw her face, all of the oxygen in my lungs was gone. At this point, every thought about my tux or her dress was gone.

R O B F UT R E LL

The only thing I could think of was holding onto her for the rest of my life and never letting go.

Her Point of View Kevin and I are both very emotional people. We wear our hearts on our sleeves and our emotions on our faces. This is evident in every picture from our wedding – we’re either laughing, big, with mouths wide open or crying, ugly crying, the kind of crying that ruins your makeup. Our first look was one of those ugly crying moments, in fact, I still cry looking back at the photos.

old fashioned but there’s something about a person’s handwriting that is so intimate and this detail was so meaningful to me. Seeing Kevin’s scribbles and knowing that he had typed the letter up first so that he didn’t make any mistakes writing it down made me smile from ear to ear. I read his sweet, funny words giggling the whole time and tried to comprehend them but also kind of sped through it because I knew that I got to see him when I was done. When we were both finished reading, our photographer turned me around and I walked up behind. I could tell he was crying without seeing his face because of his posture but when he turned around to face me and I actually saw his tears, I couldn’t help but cry too.

The First Look Our photographer got Kevin in place in the garden and walked me out so that I could only see his back. I remember feeling those butterflies in my stomach that you get when you first start dating only these butterflies were on steroids. I was turned with my back to Kevin and we were each handed a note that the other had handwritten. I may be

We both agree that those few minutes we got to hold each other, wipe each other’s tears, talk and actually see each other for the first time were the most special part of the entire day. It was so honest and so emotional. Kevin and I share everything with each other and I was dying to know how he was feeling, what he was thinking, if he had eaten enough

while getting ready, if his suit fit the way he wanted it to, what he thought of my dress. All those little things that we’re accustomed to sharing with each other throughout every day. One of my favorite pictures is the one where Kevin has his hands on my waist and he steps back and is actually seeing my dress for the first time. I love it because it was one of the last moments. We had cried and talked and hugged and kissed and he suddenly realized that I was wearing my wedding dress – the dress that I had been so excited about for so long and had tried to get him to guess what it looked like a thousand times. It showed me that he sees my heart before he sees my exterior. And, that look on his face, come on. I think he liked the dress too!

In the end, your wedding day is about the two of you committing your lives to each other. It’s a bonus to have your family and friends there to celebrate with you. I know it sounds cliché but Kevin really is my best friend. I share everything with him and I was dying to know what he thought about my dress, how he was feeling, to touch his face and see his smile, to hear his voice and feel the comfort of his presence. My only nerves were about 200 sets of eyes staring at me but not a single nerve about marrying him. I was so excited and I wanted to share every moment of it with him.

First Look or No First Look? The decision to do a first look wasn’t the easiest. I really had no opinion about it, my mom was adamantly against it, and it was one of Kevin’s only requests in the entire wedding planning process. After getting to the root of my mom’s main concern – that our guests wouldn’t get to see the look on Kevin’s face when he saw me for the first time – I assured her that our guests would have no idea he had already seen me and that seeing me walk down the aisle with my dad would be a completely new emotion for Kevin and she hesitantly allowed us to proceed.

RANCHO SANTA FE, CALIFORNIA

04.25.15

ONELOVE PHOTOGRAPHY

For a quintessential Californian experience, this fresh and elegant wedding pulled inspiration from the local scenery, citrus, and horse racing. Hints of leather and rustic wood wove in and out of lush greenery and vibrant oranges. Most of the guests traveled from the Midwest for this outdoor wedding under grand pergolas and geometric light fixtures. Although the day was unseasonably drizzly for spring, it stopped as the bride and her dad made their way down the aisle, for a magical moment she will never forget.

HVAR, CROATIA

PHOTOGRAPHY / LIFE STORIES

When a model and a restaurateur from the island of Manhattan decide to get married, what could be better than a destination wedding on the picturesque isle, Hvar, Croatia. The day before the minimal and elegant affair with it's lavender tones, palest of pale pearl gray wedding gown, and white clad bridesmaids, the bride and groom got together with their favorite friends for a day of sailing on the Adriatic. She looked stunning and effortless in her white bikini, patterned cover-up and fresh floral crown. Just looking at the pictures, you can almost hear the tinkling of glasses, lapping waves, and peals of laughter. Planning extra activities prior to the big day is a great way to relax and spend more time with guests, turning a destination wedding into a vacation for all.

Saturated hues in the red bridesmaid dresses and vibrant blooms really set this modern boho wedding apart. Marigolds, zinnias, sweet william, ranunculus and dozens of wild flowers adorn the heads of the bridesmaids, groomsmen lapels, and many other brightly colored moments. Vintage area rugs scattered the aisle and a garland adorned mantle served as the alter for a ceremony under a tree canopy accessorized with chandeliers. For the reception, vintage light fixtures and fabric streamers hung from the rafters over the never empty dance floor. Top off the night with a faux bois wedding cake topped with bunnies, for a charmingly cheerful event. R E A L

With a transparent umbrella and a big top tent decorated with market lights, this fashionable couple and their guests were protected from the gentle rain. But the drizzle didn't darken the bright neon accents of this modern wedding. For a different take on the guest book, white paint pens and acrylic panels in electric yellow and orange were on hand for guests to sign, doodle, and pen well wishes to the happy couple. A bright yellow vintage Volkswagen Beetle convertible brought the couple to and from the celebration. The bride wore a simply designed dress and her adorable short hair was embellished with an organic flourish of sparkle. Mismatched navy bridesmaid dresses flattered each girl while showing off some personality. And who could resist a glowing green giraffe to hold the wedding rings?

This destination wedding at the modern M Resort just outside Las Vegas featured elements of natural wood, geometric shapes, and fresh citrus. The wedding ceremony was held at sunset at the resort pool, where the couple shared heartfelt vows beneath a beautiful wood arch decorated with flower adorned geometric honeycombs. For a secret surprise, the bride presents her groom with a wedding band made of wood (his favorite material. As guests took their seats for the reception, they were able to get to know the attendees better with a list of their table mates' special talents and skills. Bright pastels and colors decorated the space, and a caricature artist was on hand to sketch the guests as they enjoyed this modern fĂŞte. R E A L

A hilltop ceremony with a spectacular view of San Francisco Bay needs few decorations, but this couple made them bright and thoughtful; a simple floral arch framed the bride and groom while guests shielded the sun with paper parasols in orange and soft lavenders. Their pup donned a striped bow tie, and the groom's stylish blue suite was lined with a fun floral print. Hand painted wooden signs greeted couples, and a menu clad wine bottle not only mapped up dinner, but provided a welcome libation for the table. As the sunset in a blaze of West Coast color, market lights illuminated the party as the city twinkled below. R E A L

T R END S to TRY

Weddings are filled with wonderful traditions: a kiss at the altar, cutting the cake, and the couple’s first dance among them. But not every tradition may be right for your and your significant other. So, here we’ve gathered a list of some tired traditions to say goodbye to and fresh trends you’ll want to try in their place.

Traditional: Bouquet Toss Fresh: A Flower for Every Lady Your bouquet is beautiful, original, and bottom line, yours. Why would you toss it into the air for your friends to fight over? Instead, make all the women attending your wedding feel special by having someone at the reception hand out a single stem to each lady (it’s a good way to put your groomsmen to work!). Tulips, roses, dahlias, even daisies would be good choices. Because every lady immediately feels special when she has something pretty to hold on to.

Traditional: Garter Toss Fresh: Tasteful Boudoir Shoot The lore behind the garter toss seems to be mixed, with some claiming its purpose was to provide men attending the wedding with the opportunity to grab some good luck by stealing a part of the bride’s dress, while others believe the garter was a symbol of the couple consummating their marriage, thus attendees stole the garter as proof. Either way, the garter and its creepy significance seem like a tradition you should toss (pun most definitely intended). Since the significance behind the lacy leg accessory is part luck, part sexy time, why not indulge your partner in a pre-wedding boudoir shoot? With the help of a fine art wedding photographer and some lacy lingerie, you’ll certainly leave your loved one feeling lucky.

Traditional: Seated Dinner Fresh: A Brunch Wedding To be honest, I don’t know why brunch weddings aren’t more popular. In my mind, brunch is the perfect meal: drinks start the event (a la Bloody Marys and Mimosas), followed by fresh fruits, protein packed items like bacon, eggs, and lox, and decadent pastries in all forms: waffles, pancakes, and crepes among them. So why wouldn’t you want to center your most important event around this meal? Enjoy a mid-morning ceremony (your groom can even wear a morning jacket with tails for an extra festive feel), and follow it up with a fun post-ceremony brunch reception. Finish the day by resting and recharging before partaking in an intimate dinner party with your nearest and dearest, now as husband and wife.

Traditional: Floral Centerpieces Fresh: Foodie Centerpieces Your bouquet is beautiful, original, and bottom line, yours.

Traditional: Flower Girls Fresh: Flower Grandmas Michelle Tanner at Aunt Becky and Uncle Jesse’s Full House Wedding), there’s something so refreshing about watching a grandma walk down the aisle, beaming as she makes her return journey to the altar—this time with much more wisdom and experience. Just replace the basket of tossing petals with a hand bouquet of blooms. She’ll inevitably enjoy the flood of emotion while recalling her own big day.

Traditional: Sparkler Exit Fresh: Bubbles Although

fun

and

photogenic,

many

venues prohibit the fire hazard that is a sparkler exit. Instead, we recommend you capture some youthful whimsy and pass out mini jars of bubbles for guests to blow at you and your new spouse as you make your exit. It will be just as fun and festive but without the possibility of a singed dress.

Traditional: Simple White Wedding Dress Fresh: 3-D Wedding Dress Feathers and beads have been around for a while, but the most recent New York Bridal Fashion proved that gowns with 3-D elements like butterflies, organza flowers, chiffon cubes, and hand painted detailing are here to stay (at least this season). So if poufy princess gowns aren’t your thing, you’ll definitely want to check out the couture creations in our Bridal Style Pinterest board.

Traditional: Dance Reception Fresh: Group Activities By now, your guests may be tired of pretending to enjoy a little diddy called the Cha Cha Slide, so how about skipping the oft-forced dance party altogether? More and more couples are ditching DJs and bands in favor of group activities. Think lawn games for outdoor affairs (like croquet, badminton, and corn hole), a bon fire and s’mores for more rustic events, and even live band karaoke for black tie gatherings. Each activity provides fun for all ages, if not laughs when your best man gets on stage to serenade the crowd with an off-key version of “You’ve Lost that Lovin’ Feeling”
