Q &A with EMILY GO SW IC K What is your color philosophy? I love color! I think color can evoke a certain mood and I think color is just fun. As far as the wedding industry, I loved the color scheme of my own wedding, but I think right now, the colors that most excite me are blues— sea blue, dark blue, graphite, with those neutral creams and whites

toppers…calligraphy, I’m happy to say is right on trend! Brides need to stop thinking that their wedding has be a certain way. The best advice is to do what is meaningful to you—not what you think you should do. Stop thinking you have to have the big elaborate wedding cake or have everything match.

How can couples maintain a sense of self while wedding planning? Honestly, as a couple, you have to talk about what is most important to you. Write down three to five meaningful things. If it is the food, then really focus on the food and give a big chunk of your budget towards that. I think that you can tell the couples sense of style mostly through those little details. Starting with simple ideas to seeing it come to life on that one perfect day was beyond special! Trend yays and trend nays. I love loose organic florals with bridal bouquets and incorporating florals from the ceiling down! Also, calligraphy everywhere — from stone or leaf calligraphy place settings, to laser cut cake

Trends that I’m just seriously over though are mason jars , candy buffets, and burlap…let's move on.

How do you get inspired? Nature. I love seeing all the beautiful growth that is around us—the shrubbery, cactus, flowers, and grasses. When I need some inspiration, I’ll take a walk outside or go buy some flowers. I love looking at what others in the industry are doing, yet am careful, not to compare myself to them and know that I have my own unique style. The most important thing is just to do it. Practice everyday and I truly believe that action creates passion, so when I’m not feeling inspired, I discipline myself to sit down and sketch or paint. vol 12

SCOTT LEE WILLIAMS WRITER

HOW TO REALLY GET ENGAGED A GRO OM T ELLS HIS V ERS ION OF TH E W EDDING DAY

Even just seeing her number on the phone makes me smile. “Hello, Pookie!” she says when I pick up. “How are you?” I am showered and shaved, examining my face in the still steamed mirror. It is a few hours before my wedding, and I have yet to get dressed. There’s plenty of time, but I probably need to get on it. “I’m good! Just getting ready. Is everything okay?” “I’m still getting ready, too. I think they might have to sew me into my dress,” she says, laughing. “Pookie, could you do me a favor?” The greatest thing about dressing for a wedding as a groom is that all the decisions have been made, decades, maybe longer, ago, by someone else: culture, fashion, the expectations of everyone who would be

64 | S M I T T E N M A G A Z I N E /

vol 12

attending. I know what I will be wearing for the next ten to fourteen hours, and I am cool with it. It was not my decision to make, after all, and it hadn’t been for a long time. Interestingly enough, that was sort of the entire attitude I had been taking toward the wedding, too. I was beginning to wonder if that was the best tactic. “Are you there?” “Oops! Sorry. I’m here.” Sometimes my mind drifts a bit. She sounds pretty cheerful, but I can tell she’s a little stressed. “So, I forgot the black markers for signing the guestbook picture, and I need you to bring them. I’m so sorry to ask you to do this. Do you know where they are?”

“I think so,” I reply. I don’t, totally, but I’m sure I can find them. How hard could it be? “Oh good.” She sounds relieved. “Thank you so much! You’re my hero!” I am awesome at this. I am totally calm, and I’m calming her down. I am all over this groom thing. “So you’ll get them?” S ALV A D ORE

“Yes, absolutely. I got this.” Nailing it. “Okay. I gotta go. I love you.” “I love you. See you soon.” And find them I do. I think. I mean, I find Sharpies, which is what she asked for. Fine tip, which will be perfect for signing in a guestbook, right? I got this.

“Hello, Pookie! Thank you so much for bringing me those markers. But, ah,” she hesitates. “Are these the only Sharpies you brought?” Her voice has a slight strain to it. “They were the only ones I found, so….” “But they’re brown,” she says.

A few hours later, I take them to the wedding venue, and give them to one of the bridesmaids buzzing around the venue like beautiful, business-like worker bees. She whisks them away into the back where my bride is hiding. I’m pretty proud of myself, if I may say so. Mission accomplished.

“Yeah!” I have a sinking feeling. “There were some lighter brown ones, but I didn’t think they’d be good for signing the guestbook thingy, so I brought the darkest ones I could find.” “You didn’t find the black ones?”

My groomsmen are starting to show up, now, and they’re pretty nervous, maybe even more than me. I get them all boutonniered and reassure them, and they reassure me. It’s all very chummy. Then my phone rings. It’s the bride. My smile gets even bigger. “Hey!”

Uh oh. I knew I forgot something. “We have black ones?” There’s a pause. She is clearly trying to be kind. A bridesmaid comes in and whisks past me carrying a shopping bag. It wasn’t a big screw up, nothing to derail the wedding. The bridesmaids, those perfect combination of personal assistant, best

friend, and Valkyries, took care of it. But it stuck with me. When she needed me, when I could have helped make her life less stressful, I let her down. Was it a big deal? No, and she didn’t really think so, either. Would having a black framed guestbook picture signed with brown ink have ruined our marriage? Of course not. But even a little bit of thought, a moment’s reflection, would have clued me in. She wasn’t asking me to read her mind, just think a little. To engage. And the truth was, I wasn’t engaged. The wedding process requires hundreds of decisions, and a constant attention to details. And during that process, as a groom, you can help, or you can let it go on without you. The traditional roles encourage this second option. “It’s her day,” they tell you. “Your job is to say yes.” But just saying “yes” doesn’t always help. You have to do more. Now, you may be one of the grooms that is super hands-on. You may be all over it. But chances are, even in that role, you’re not necessarily listening. Because it’s easy to believe that you know what it means to be committed, to be engaged, to be present and in the moment. We’d been

living together for over a year, and together for many years before that. I thought I had a pretty good handle on things. But when I stood at the altar, and watched her pupils dilate as we said our vows, I felt a piece of my soul leave my chest and go to her, never to return. From that moment forward, the world became different. I suddenly realized that I was part of a whole. That my job was not just to let her make decisions, or for me to make my own decisions independent of her. It was my job, now and for the rest of my life, to really think about more than just myself. I had to struggle: with being disengaged from the things that were important to her, with my own ego, with my sense that her problems weren’t my problems, too, to become one part of “we.” That’s what a real marriage is, and that’s what a wedding, that beautiful ceremony, illustrates the beginning of. Why not start now, before the wedding itself? A wedding, with all it’s decisions and organizing and personalities, is the perfect opportunity to begin. The smarts, and empathy, and compassion needed to make a marriage works starts now, and it might start with something small.

Scott Lee Williams lives, writes, and makes music in Brooklyn with his wife, a cat, and a dog. He grew up in Arizona where he got his bachelor's in Music, Theater, and Creative Writing at the University of Arizona. He's happier in Brooklyn, though. The weather's better. Emily’s father officiated the ceremony, her sister and good friend played violins as Brennan and Emily walked down the aisle through the sun-kissed oak trees on the bride's family's cattle ranch.

The artistic bride incorporated dozens of ways to use her calligraphy from the custom designed invitations and program to the oversized chalkboard art scattered throughout the reception. With an airstream to relax in, couches, hand dyed tablecloths, dozens of desserts, ribbon chandeliers, and photo books; the 230 guests did not have a shortage of things to do and see. Having a hand in creating all of those details made it all the more special and memorable to both the couple, their friends, and families. R E A L

Weddings are often considered a fairy tale of a day, but few are as dreamy as this elegant outdoor soiree. Between the custom designer dress, the bride arriving by rowboat, and a horse drawn carriage, it's hard to pick a more romantic element. But thoughout all of the classic wedding design choices are moments of brilliant modern touches. The invitation suite it bold and playful with a watercolor motif and hand lettered envelopes. Rich hues of sanguine reds, deep burgundies, and soft lavenders play in the abundant blossoms. All of the florals were exquisitely arranged and prodominate fixtures in every part of this traditional yet playful wedding.

The modern trend of doing a first look is a wonderful way to get a tender, emotional reaction from the couple, and this wedding full of southern charm is no exception. When a musically talented graphic designer meets a third grade art teacher, there are bound to be lots of sweet, personal touches like the painted signs, stationery and handmade cake topper (pets included). On display were several notes of matrimonial advice from the bride's students, one particularly amusing card read, " Make sure your hair looks good, so bring an extra comb. When you get up that morning make sure to bathe, brush your hair, and bring your wallet! Because you know how girls are about shopping right?". Between child advice and a glow stick exit, what could be more fun? R E A L

With an industrial space like King Plow Arts Center for the reception, it was important to add in the feminine details to this summer wedding. After a beautiful ceremony softly lit by stained glass windows, the guests drove a short distance to the reception. Escort cards greeted them on the shelves of an oversized Eiffel Tower, as they entered for cocktail hour. Once the door to the dinner and dance floor space open, blush sequin table runners sparkled under the candle and twinkle lights. Scented centerpieces of jasmine, garden roses, and eucalyptus hung from the rafters and ran the length of the tables. Under a dozen lighted grapevine orbs, friends and family enjoyed music by The Retreat, whose folksy top 40 covers kept everyone dancing. The bride's lovely sisters treated her to a paraody of Baby Got Back for a truly memorable maid of honor speech. This magical night ended with donuts en flambĂŠ and a sparkler exit. R E A L
