Fall 2016
Autopilot by Amir I’ve noticed that I have my own way of waking up in the morning – and if I get pulled out of my routine I get a bit confused or even irritated. This phenomenon isn’t an imagined reaction in my head – it is real. Humans are hard-wired to regularly repeat simple and habitual activities that require little or no thought, activities like eating, bathing, checking our smartphones, or talking in cliches. Scientists have mapped out human habit-making to an area of the brain called the basal ganglia, which plays a key role in emotions, memories and pattern recognition. Decisions, meanwhile, are processed in a different part of the brain called the prefrontal cortex. When a behavior becomes automatic, the decision-making part of your brain goes on ‘autopilot’ and the basal ganglia takes control. Going on auto-pilot has its advantages – it means you have all of this mental activity you can devote to other things. That's what enables you drive your car while focusing on something else, like the radio or a conversation. While nature provides us great leverage to autopilot a good portion of daily activity, if we don’t pay attention, we can over-rely on it and miss out on a lot of things right in front of us. On autopilot, we miss enjoying the sweet taste of a strawberry, tender moments with a pet or child, or a beautiful array of clouds. Defaulting to autopilot can be so easy that it's possible to live an entire life this way, as days flow into weeks and months and years that have become ritualistic and unremarkable. Once you’ve been doing yoga awhile and you become familiar with poses, autopilot is an easy and seemingly attractive possibility. Your body has muscle memory and you no longer have to think as much about how to do each pose. Is there any value of practicing on autopilot? You’ve technically done a physical practice, but how much benefit are you getting out of just going through the motions? If you stop thinking about how you’re moving your body, your mind starts to wander and think about other things. While your body may be in the pose, your mind, breath, and spirit have vacated. It’s like saying you read a book when all you really did was turn the pages. Yoga practice is meant to unify the mind, body, and breath. Practicing with full awareness helps push past repetitive thoughts, allowing our bodies to open and retraining our mind to not react so quickly to physical and emotional discomfort. We want to find the pose with the most efficient amount of effort and align our body with the least strain in our joints. This simply isn’t possible on autopilot. When we practice asana, we can turn off autopilot by slowing down and absorbing every incremental movement that takes us into the familiar shapes we know and love. Feel every moment-to-moment sensation that arises as if they were new and unique. When you practice, this way, you won’t get bored, and you may even discover longheld habits that take you out of balance. And what if practicing this way follows you out of the studio into daily life? What if you were more present in conversations, more aware of the things that bring you joy, more aware of the things that are truly most important? Turning off autopilot helps us transform out of the same old routines, reactions, and judgements, out of the stagnant life of ritual, and into something extraordinary.

This summer we launched #reallifeyogis, a social media series on our walls, both digital and real. We wanted to convey that yoga is about so much more than just “posturing” on our mats or in the studio, and that yoga isn’t just one isolated aspect of our lives, separate from the rest, but can be woven into every single thing we do in life. We wanted to show how varied, interesting, fun, and creative our teaching staff is, and how we all take lessons from the mat and the cushion and apply them to make everything better, to recognize that every aspect of our life is worthy of our fullest attention and willingness to see and be the manifestation of love. As our friend Erich Schiffmann, one of our most influential teachers, says, “yoga is the style in which you live your life…the way you do your thing, it's about how you live!” Once we embrace this complete definition of yoga, we start seeing and experiencing it everywhere. Enjoy here some of our longest-established teachers in their “reallife” poses. We are real life yogis.

General Information and Fees REGISTRATION INFORMATION AND FEES Sun & Moon is a school of yoga, with weekly classes structured to provide a wellrounded curriculum over an entire quarter. We run four quarters per year; depending on the season, the length of the quarter varies. We welcome beginners and new students at any time. Your first class is free! Once you decide to sign up for a class, you can register online at sunandmoonstudio.com; or by phone, mail, or in person. We accept credit cards, checks or cash. If you’re redeeming a gift certificate or studio credit, please do so by phone or in person. We offer the following options for class registrations:
MAKE-UPS Consider your registered class your “homeroom” for yoga. However, if you can’t make it to your registered class, you can make it up in any other class within the current quarter at either studio. Make-ups in advance of a future absence are allowed. When you are doing a make-up, sign in at the front desk and inform the teacher. All make-ups must be taken during the quarter for which you are registered; they may not be carried over to the next quarter. REFUND AND CREDIT POLICY Keeping in mind our liberal make-up policy, we understand that life circumstances sometimes get in the way, and yoga has to wait. If you must ask for a credit or a refund, they are available for the number of classes remaining in the quarter, based on the date we receive your request (not the date you last attended). Therefore, please fill out a refund/credit request form as soon as you know you can no longer attend your classes. Refunds will incur the following administrative fees: $20 for classes or 10% the cost of a workshop. Refunds by check may take up to 3 weeks to process; refunds by credit card may take up to one week. Letters of Credit are valid for one year from the date issued, and incur no administrative fee. Letters of Credit apply to classes and workshops only, and cannot be redeemed for cash or merchandise. Workshop refunds or letters of credit are available up to the day before the event. No refunds or credits are given the day of or after the workshop.
FULL QUARTER REGISTRATION We recommend this option, as it will give you the best possible yoga education and experience. Regular practice and connection to your yoga community form the cornerstone of Sun & Moon’s unique yoga environment. Full quarter price is $15/class PARTIAL REGISTRATION If you’re joining the quarter late, or you know you’ll be traveling and unable to attend several classes, you may register for a partial quarter, with a minimum of six classes. Partial registration price is $16/class SINGLE CLASS/DROP-INS To accommodate students with unpredictable schedules, we allow anyone to drop-in anytime (on rare occasions, space will not be available in a fully registered class). Drop-in price is $20/class
WHAT TO WEAR AND OTHER USEFUL INFORMATION Wear comfortable “work-out” clothes; nothing too baggy so teachers can see your alignment. We practice barefoot and keep our floors clean; leave your shoes in the cubbies before entering the yoga rooms. We have men’s and women’s changing areas. No heavy perfume/cologne or noisy jewelry. For your safety, leave valuables locked and hidden in your car. Cell phones must be silenced; for the benefit of all, we strongly discourage cell phones in the yoga room. Sun & Moon Yoga Studio, Ltd. reserves the right to dismiss (with or without a refund) any student who disrupts the harmony of the class or studio.
EXTRA DROP-INS FOR REGISTERED STUDENTS If you’re a registered student (full or partial) seeking an additional class, you may drop-in to any class at the partial registration price listed above. MULTIPLE CLASS DISCOUNTS Register for two full quarter classes and take $50 off your total; register for three full quarter classes and take off $108.
EMERGENCY CLOSINGS Classes cancelled due to inclement weather or other emergency will not be rescheduled, but may be made up in any other class during the quarter. During severe weather conditions or other emergencies, we will post all cancellations on the studio website and on the outgoing voicemail at 703.525.9642.
Registration – Fall 2016 One form per person, please.
