FALL 2017
Ch-ch-ch-changes by Annie Moyer Just before my senior year in high school my summertime friends and I carved our initials on the wooden landing by the sea at Cape Cod. We stood there, posed for a photo, and then memorialized our youth at the top of stairs leading down to the beach we’d played on and swam at every year since I was nine. I hadn’t been back to visit until this summer, the one before my daughters’ own senior year, coordinating the trip around their exploratory college visits. We arrived to find not much changed in our friends’ cottage, the warm and welcoming beachfront destination for so many of us across generations, but the big shock was the re-built landing. Our initials were gone! After the initial disappointment, it seemed silly to give it another thought. Did I really expect that weatherbeaten wood on the New England coast would have withstood 30-plus years of beach-bound children, rowdy teens, and happy-hour celebrating adults without ever being repaired? The house not having changed brought comfort, and yet the contrast with the shiny new landing, untouched by our youthful imprint, stung. The Yoga Sutras identify five causes of suffering, the last of which is fear of losing the status quo, or an imagining that things don’t or shouldn’t change. But the ability to identify the causes of suffering isn’t meant to be confused with the ability to erase it from our lives. A life fully-lived is one that encounters the full spectrum of human emotion. To be human is to be hurt. To live is to lose. Yoga practice provides a framework to sort through the spectrum of life’s experiences and to reconcile the contrasts of presence and loss. In the midst of a pleasurable time, enjoy. If the ending is sad or painful, grieve the loss. In the midst of unpleasantness, bear its presence and rejoice its end. Through it all, examine closely and inquire what circumstances are within our power to alter if we choose to, and which ones are beyond our control. If we can reasonably extend a pleasurable time, why not? If a difficult time can be averted or mitigated, take charge! As our teacher Erich Schiffmann says, practice on the small stuff: mealtime, traffic, yoga postures – thereby building skills for the bigger and biggest stuff: navigating career changes, feeling relationships shift, moving to a new home, honoring the lives of lost loved ones. Clearly life is a string of changes, comings, and goings. But is something gone simply because it’s no longer tangibly present? The initials may not be visible in wood any longer, but I can read them, clear as day, in my heart.

Strength, Stretch and Rest: Finding the Balance by Anna Mikheeva Because muscles can be in different states, such as locked short or locked long (which means they are usually weak and dehydrated due to poor circulation), stretching a muscle that feels "tight" is not necessarily a wise thing to do as a matter of default. When muscles are out of balance due to postural and movement habits, they pull too much on some bones, not enough on others, preventing better alignment in both yoga poses and daily life. True strength in a muscle means it can both elongate to a functional, maximum safe length; contract well to move bones and support internal organs; and maintain optimal resting tone when at ease. Often the sensations that our nervous system provides can be confusing. A "tight" feeling could be in a place that is locked short or long, and they can feel similar because they both signal to the brain a state of unease, discomfort, or pain. It’s almost like an itch that cries out to be scratched! However, caution should be exercised when dealing with anything that is "locked," and that is the key word here. The nervous system often becomes unable to send accurate information to the brain as a result of forming a pocket of poor body awareness around such areas of constant irritation, because it is exhausting and disturbing for it to monitor the unpleasant sensations all the time. When a muscle is locked, it can be dehydrated, like a kitchen sponge that sat on the counter overnight. When you first pick up the dry sponge and try to twist it, it will not be pliable, and if you insist on twisting it, it will fray or tear, as can a locked muscle. So, when you get that itchy feeling in your upper or lower back after sitting too long in the same position, what should you do to find relief? The sponge must get wet, and your muscles too. Muscles exist for movement, so gentle, mid-range movements that gently contract the muscles of concern would be the first step toward sending some much-needed blood flow to them, so that we can restore mobility and body awareness. If it is the back we are talking about, gentle dynamic cobra pose would do the trick wonderfully, provided we resist the urge to go all out to maximum range of movement. If we hold back a bit and stay within small-to mid-range in the beginning, carefully monitoring sensations, it will be akin to taking a dry sponge under the flow of water and gently squeezing and releasing it, until if feels pliable again in our hand. This way the locked muscles are prepared for any strengthening or stretching you might want to do later. The second step is to stay in the shape that facilitates the needed correction. If a muscle has been locked long, we want to hold a pose that sustains its contraction for a few breaths. If it has been locked short, we want to sustain a pose that elongates it. After the dynamic contraction, such stays restore a muscle's resting tone. In our example with cobra, if your thoracic (upper) spine was locked long with a computer hunch, then you would want to stay in cobra (with minimum use of hands), giving your rhomboids (the muscles between your shoulder blades) a chance to "get a grip.” If you want to rehab your lower back from a swayback shape, move into child's pose for six breaths afterwards. You can do both of these stays if you are experiencing both of these “locks," which is very common. After the muscles have been "unlocked," first with a dynamic gentle contraction, then a stay in contracted or elongated shape, depending on what you are dealing with, only then it would be appropriate to "release" them, or rather, bring them to an optimal resting length. That means the shape in which you rest allows you to completely relax your body and bring onto the ground any areas of concern. Which is why savasana variations and other rest positions are so appropriate at the end of class or even between poses, and constructive rest pose is my favorite. Bent knees allow the low back to have a choice of how it wants to be, while head level on the floor or minimally folded blanket Anna Mikheeva is a senior level teacher at allows the upper back to find Sun & Moon’s Fairfax Studio. In other life, the proper extension. Note the glaring absence of "stretching" in the above approach. When your muscles are “locked," stretching should be off the menu! Stretching should be considered if you need greater range of movement, and should only be attempted
Anna is a Russian language translator and

WHAT TO WEAR AND OTHER USEFUL INFORMATION Wear something comfy that’s not too loose and not too tight, and layer for temperature comfort. We practice barefoot and keep our floors clean; leave your shoes in the cubbies before entering the yoga rooms. We have men’s and women’s changing areas. No heavy perfume/cologne or noisy jewelry. For your safety, leave valuables locked and hidden in your car. Cell phones must be silenced; for the benefit of all, we strongly discourage cell phones in the yoga room. Sun & Moon Yoga Studio, Ltd. reserves the right to dismiss (with or without a refund) any student who disrupts the harmony of the class or studio.
SINGLE CLASS/DROP-INS To accommodate students with unpredictable schedules, we allow anyone to drop-in anytime with no prior reservation (on rare occasions, space will not be available in a fully registered class). $22/class EXTRA DROP-INS FOR REGISTERED STUDENTS If you’re a registered student (full or partial) seeking an additional class, you may drop-in to any class at a reduced rate. $18/class for registered drop-in MULTIPLE WEEKLY CLASS REGISTRATIONS & DISCOUNTS Register for two full quarter weekly classes and take $50 off your total; register for three full quarter weekly classes and take off $108.
EMERGENCY CLOSINGS Classes cancelled due to inclement weather or other emergency will not be re-scheduled, but may be made up in any other class during the quarter. During severe weather conditions or other emergencies, we will post all cancellations on the studio website and on the outgoing voicemail at 703.525.9642.
SENIOR DISCOUNT Seniors (age 60 and up) take $10 off full quarter registration. MAKE-UPS Use up all your classes as you like during the span of the quarter in which you’re registered.
