Spring 2016
Science Experiments of the Yogi by Amir
Yoga is a science of health and well-being, and as yoga practitioners, we can consider ourselves yogi scientists. Typically, we go to our yoga classes and we learn and practice new poses, ideas, and philosophies. If we do this correctly, we don't simply accept what our teacher tells us, but we take what we learn into daily life, test it out, and verify if it holds true for us. Sometimes it does and sometimes it doesn't, but ultimately, we will have learned something along the way. But the real beauty happens when we learn how to leverage what we learned into practical tools for life. On a recent trip to Mexico, I became quite ill one evening with a case of what I call El Diablo. I'll spare you the details, but it involved everything inside of me wanting to get out, quickly and violently. Along with it were countless hours of chills and cold sweats, only overshadowed by full-body aches. The only thing I wanted to do was sleep it off, however, the discomfort was so severe, there was no way my body would let me find any comfort for getting the sleep I so desperately needed. Around 5:00 a.m., after many hours of flipping in bed attempting to find a half-way comfortable position, I rolled onto my belly, and realized I could not breath. But instead of just rolling back onto my back, I started exploring why all of a sudden I couldn't breath while lying prone when this had never been an issue before. Once I steadied and focused my mind, I noticed in my sick condition that the muscles in my back ribs had seized up and were preventing me from expanding any breath into my back. The yogi scientist in me woke up. I consciously began to relax my back ribs, and – lo and behold! – the breath started coming back. And with this ease of breath, I felt slightly better. With a glimpse of improvement coming into view, I stayed with my experiment. I rolled on my back and started modifying the wave lengths of my breathing – altering the length of the in-breaths and out-breaths, and modifying the volume of each breath. I noticed that there was a particular wave length and cadence where the breath was slightly longer and deeper, and a texture that struck a certain resonance. With this resonance, I was no longer aware of any discomfort in my body. It wasn't a hard breath to maintain, but it did require a single-minded focus to keep going. If I stopped, my mind and body would immediately go back into the suffering. So I stayed focused on my new breath, which quieted my mind and reduced my awareness of body aches to the point that I finally fell asleep. I woke hours later from a deep restful sleep feeling mostly recovered from the ordeal. So after about 20 years of teaching yoga, I had these techniques in my toolbox all along. Nobody ever told me, “If you get El Diablo, you should focus on aligning with your breath.” But as a yoga scientist, I was able to rediscover a truth I hold dear: this stuff really works.

Quiet: Embodying Mindfulness by Annie Moyer Life in here in the Washington, D.C. suburbs is loud, inside and out. The sounds of our environment are accompanied by an orchestra of sound in our minds, often in the form of selfchatter, and not often harmonious. We hear cars, and we think we need to be somewhere, there's going to be traffic, we're going to be late. We hear neighbors chatting on the street, and think we should be saying hello, or welcoming a new family to the block, or walking the dog. We hear planes flying low, and we think about That Day, and wonder if it’s happening again. Sometimes it takes an unrelentingly loud experience to wake up to the mind’s fierce capacity to find quiet. Ever been to Disney World? We were never much of a Disney-inclined This hammock, by this lake, at the Feathered Pipe Ranch in family, and my daughters understood from an early age that it Helena, Montana, could be yours this summer! Join us for the wasn’t a choice destination for us. One daughter was afraid of Mindful Unplug – one week of unstructured personal retreat, and “characters,” and the other leery of big crowds. The day another led week of teaching with Annie & Amir as your guides. arrived, however, when we couldn’t avoid it. The crowdphobe became a teenager and landed on a hip-hop team headed to a national competition in Orlando, FL. At Epcot Center. At Disney. Supportive of this exciting opportunity for my daughter, I found I’d become a “dance mom,” and off to Disney we went. There were long hours when the team was practicing and I had time to myself, but it wasn’t practical to leave Epcot grounds. I craved quiet. I deplored the scene. I may have cried a little bit. And yet, what a perfect chance to practice this essential embodiment of yoga – to find inner quiet in accordance with an outer assault of sound. I found a bench in the shade, tucked my belongings by my side, crossed my legs and sat up tall. I closed my eyes, commenced a mantra that went something like, “It doesn’t matter what people think….,” and gradually settled into a comfortable silence. Yes, I heard footsteps close by. I heard laughter. I heard cranky children. I heard a kid say, “Look, Mommy, that lady is meditating.” And I heard my heart beating, synchronizing itself to the environment, my nervous system re-setting to a restful state. But once in a while, we can make it easy on ourselves to get quiet. If we're lucky, we have opportunities to travel to near or far places where the pace slows, and the cacophony slides into symphony. Whether it’s a short drive from D.C. to the Shenandoah National Forest, or an adventure out west to Helena, Montana, at the Feathered Pipe Ranch, landing in a truly quiet place reveals this slide. Stepping out into the cleaner air and rich earth, a quiet cloaks the senses, as if someone pushed the mute button. And then the volume slowly rises again, but instead of the sounds that distract and create tension, we notice sounds that seductively pull us into the moment. Sounds that have always been there, but ones we’ve previously ignored. Birds sing. Wind sweeps through the trees. Small creatures scuttle through tall grass. Water ripples. Quiet is not the absence of sound. It's the absence of reactivity to the sound we hear. And it’s recognizing that whatever we hear can be harmonized inside. “QUIET” is one of the 12 Embodiments of Mindfulness that Amir and I will be teaching this summer at the Feathered Pipe Ranch’s Mindful Unplug. Join us for a precious time of quiet presence, of embodied practice, of true peace. Also, the food there is fantastically delicious.
Mindfully Unplug This Summer with Annie & Amir at the Feathered Pipe Ranch July 30 to Aug 5
Annie and Amir will present 12 Embodiments of Mindfulness over six relaxing days under Montana’s Big Sky. Each yoga and meditation class will be dedicated to one of twelve identified qualities and attitudes that feed and are fed by a quiet mind. Extend your stay afterward with an easy drive to Yellowstone or Glacier National Park, or come a week early for an unguided, personal retreat week at the Feathered Pipe. 6
General Information and Fees REGISTRATION INFORMATION AND FEES Sun & Moon is a school of yoga, with weekly classes structured to provide a wellrounded curriculum over an entire quarter. We run four quarters per year; depending on the season, the length of the quarter varies. We welcome beginners and new students at any time. Your first class is free! Once you decide to sign up for a class, you can register online at sunandmoonstudio.com; or by phone, mail, or in person. We accept credit cards, checks or cash. If you’re redeeming a gift certificate or studio credit, please do so by phone or in person. We offer the following options for class registrations:
MAKE-UPS Consider your registered class your “homeroom” for yoga. However, if you can’t make it to your registered class, you can make it up in any other class within the current quarter at either studio. Make-ups in advance of a future absence are allowed. When you are doing a make-up, sign in at the front desk and inform the teacher. All make-ups must be taken during the quarter for which you are registered; they may not be carried over to the next quarter. REFUND AND CREDIT POLICY Keeping in mind our liberal make-up policy, we understand that life circumstances sometimes get in the way, and yoga has to wait. If you must ask for a credit or a refund, they are available for the number of classes remaining in the quarter, based on the date we receive your request (not the date you last attended). Therefore, please fill out a refund/credit request form as soon as you know you can no longer attend your classes. Refunds will incur the following administrative fees: $20 for classes or 10% the cost of a workshop. Refunds by check may take up to 3 weeks to process; refunds by credit card may take up to one week. Letters of Credit are valid for one year from the date issued, and incur no administrative fee. Letters of Credit apply to classes and workshops only, and cannot be redeemed for cash or merchandise. Workshop refunds or letters of credit are available up to the day before the event. No refunds or credits are given the day of or after the workshop.
FULL QUARTER REGISTRATION We recommend this option, as it will give you the best possible yoga education and experience. Regular practice and connection to your yoga community form the cornerstone of Sun & Moon’s unique yoga environment. Full quarter price is $15/class. PARTIAL REGISTRATION If you’re joining the quarter late, or you know you’ll be traveling and unable to attend several classes, you may register for a partial quarter, with a minimum of six classes. Partial registration price is $16/class. SINGLE CLASS/DROP-INS To accommodate students with unpredictable schedules, we allow anyone to drop-in anytime (on rare occasions, space will not be available in a fully registered class). Drop-in price is $20/class.
WHAT TO WEAR AND OTHER USEFUL INFORMATION Wear comfortable “work-out” clothes; nothing too baggy so teachers can see your alignment. We practice barefoot and keep our floors clean; leave your shoes in the cubbies before entering the yoga rooms. We have men’s and women’s changing areas. No heavy perfume/cologne or noisy jewelry. For your safety, leave valuables locked and hidden in your car. Cell phones must be silenced; for the benefit of all, we strongly discourage cell phones in the yoga room. Sun & Moon Yoga Studio, Ltd. reserves the right to dismiss (with or without a refund) any student who disrupts the harmony of the class or studio.
EXTRA DROP-INS FOR REGISTERED STUDENTS If you’re a registered student (full or partial) seeking an additional class, you may drop-in to any class at the partial registration price listed above. MULTIPLE CLASS DISCOUNTS Register for two full quarter classes and take $50 off your total; register for three full quarter classes and take off $108.
EMERGENCY CLOSINGS Classes cancelled due to inclement weather or other emergency will not be rescheduled, but may be made up in any other class during the quarter. During severe weather conditions or other emergencies, we will post all cancellations on the studio website and on the outgoing voicemail at 703.525.9642.
Registration – Spring 2016 One form per person, please.
