Spring 2017
Really, Really Listen by Amir We start every yoga class by practicing “centering” as way to our relax mind and body so that we can focus on the lesson to follow. We do this ritual so often that we may not grasp its importance, but developing this mindful state makes a significant contribution to our health and well-being. When it comes to yoga practice, focus is everything. When I see articles about how people can injure themselves in yoga class, I hardly consider this news. I believe there are basically two ways to practice yoga: ‘wrongly’ and ‘correctly.’ The fact is that when you do anything physical ‘wrong,’ you risk injury. Can you injure yourself by sitting in your office chair? Yes, if you’re not paying attention. Try sitting in your chair incorrectly for ten years and see if your low back hurts. The root source of a ‘wrong’ movement in any posture is a lack of focus on what your individual body is telling you about itself – like an inner referee watching the game intently, always on alert for infractions. Without this referee, we move habitually without any regard for how the challenge of the pose affects us. And even worse is simply ignoring strains and pains that arise – the referee who blatantly turns a blind eye to obvious fouls. The single and direct statement in the Yoga Sutras about asana practice dictates that a pose should be held steady and with ease, neither one of which involves hardship-inducing pain or strain. This means really, really listening to all the details, down to the smallest. Small and simple movements repeated over and over can have a profound effect. Sometimes the most experienced students are the ones who have stopped really listening. In my therapy work, it’s quite common to work with an advanced student who suddenly starts experiencing pain in a joint. I ask if they are practicing correctly – and the answer is always yes. And I believe they think they are. Then I suggest a pose that would usually exacerbate their problem and ask if they feel any strain. The default answer, because of their experience and knowledge, is ‘no.’ But when I ask again, if they feel ‘any little strain at all,” the answer becomes, “well a just a little, but it’s nothing and I’m used to it, I hardly even notice.” And then there’s the eureka moment – how not listening to even just the littlest strain every day for years on end will eventually turn into a chronic problem. With ‘correct’ yoga, we scan and listen to every internal message as we move in and out of poses, making the adjustments that the body needs as we find our own proper alignment. When we listen to the body, we create the conditions that lead to healing. And practicing this alignment over and over creates new habitual and 'correct' alignment patterns that spill over into your daily life. Maybe you’ve heard the tale of the frog who jumps in the pot of hot water and knows immediately to get out before he’s boiled, as opposed to the other frog in the cold water that gradually warms to a final boil. This frog didn’t notice the temperature rising, because he wasn’t really paying attention to how it felt when things were heating up. Practicing yoga asana with a keen sensory awareness to every detail, every shift, every metaphorical temperature change becomes a life-long habit of awareness that can be applied to any area of life – work, relationships, eating, and daily habits of living. Try the practice of really, really listening. Start in yoga class, and bring it with you after you roll up your mat.

Community Is Everything We know that yoga is good for us. At a minimum, we know it promotes physical flexibility and strength, and supports healthy functioning of all the body’s systems. But there’s so much more. We also know that when people walk in to Sun & Moon for the first time, they frequently remark about the peaceful vibes. It’s no surprise to us. Each day, we observe the smiling faces of students coming out of class, we hear the laughter and see the hugs of yoga buddies catching up with each other, we watch friends heading to lunch or dinner, we listen to stories of healing and restored hope, and we know that what’s happening on the mat is just the beginning. Dan Buettner, longevity expert and author of Blue Zones: Lessons for Living Longer from the People Who’ve Lived the Longest, has identified key elements of lifestyle consistent with long and high quality of life. Those who live the longest and healthiest lives tend to choose social circles that support healthy behaviors, do activities that move the body naturally and non-competitively, and belong to a community that encourages faith in a larger conscious presence. These connections foster longterm friendships around healthy activities, combat depression and isolation, and add treasured years to our lives.
7 Ways To Get More Involved at Sun & Moon 1. Volunteer for our Work Exchange program. No available shifts? Offer a service! Let us know what we might trade. 2. Organize a “Yoga for Good” event. Choose a local nonprofit and rally your folks for a donations-only class. 3. Create your own class. Do you have a group of eight or more friends who’d like their own special class that doesn’t fit our regular schedule? Commit to six weeks and we’ll provide the teacher, just for you. 4. Take advantage of a corporate discount. Register with eight or more of your colleagues for a full quarter, and take a steep discount on the class. 5. Sign up for a visiting master teacher workshop. You don’t have to be in teacher training to benefit from our stellar lineup of guest presenters. We bring only the best, nationally-recognized masters for quality workshops where people bond over their learning. It’s everything you love about your regular class, magnified by time and space. 6. Travel with us! We’re headed to Montana this June, and Bali this August. Chat with our travel buddies from past trips to Turkey, Italy, and the Feathered Pipe Ranch, and find out why a yoga vacation is special. 7. Bliss out on yoga this summer. Stay tuned for details on our 9th annual Unlimited Bliss: Summer Yoga Spa.

General Information and Fees REGISTRATION INFORMATION AND FEES Sun & Moon is a classic school of hatha yoga, with weekly classes structured to provide a well-rounded curriculum over an entire quarter. Depending on the season, the length of the quarter varies. We welcome beginners and new students at any time, and your first class is free! Most of our students register for one weekly class for the whole quarter, but partial registrations and drop-ins are always available. We also offer steeper discounts for multiple weekly class registrations. Options include:
REFUND AND CREDIT POLICY Keeping in mind our liberal make-up policy, we understand that life circumstances sometimes get in the way, and yoga has to wait. Please use discretion when requesting refunds and credits, as our teachers are compensated for your registration up front. If you find by the end of the quarter that it's been a true hardship to make up missed classes, you may fill out a refund/credit request form on our website and await management approval. Refunds for classes will incur a $20 administrative fee. Refunds may be made by check (may take up to 3 weeks to process) or online to your credit card (may take up to one week to process). Studio credit will be applied to your online account, is valid for one year from the date issued and incurs no administrative fee. Studio credit applies to classes and workshops only, and cannot be redeemed for cash, merchandise, or a future refund.
FULL QUARTER REGISTRATION We recommend this option, as it will give you the best possible yoga education and experience. Regular practice and connection to your yoga community form the cornerstone of Sun & Moon’s unique yoga environment. $15/class for full quarter registration PARTIAL REGISTRATION If you’re joining the quarter late, or you know you’ll be traveling and unable to attend several classes, choose a partial quarter registration. $16/class for partial registration (minimum of six classes)
WHAT TO WEAR AND OTHER USEFUL INFORMATION Wear something comfy that’s not too loose and not too tight, and layer for temperature comfort. We practice barefoot and keep our floors clean; leave your shoes in the cubbies before entering the yoga rooms. We have men’s and women’s changing areas. No heavy perfume/cologne or noisy jewelry. For your safety, leave valuables locked and hidden in your car. Cell phones must be silenced; for the benefit of all, we strongly discourage cell phones in the yoga room. Sun & Moon Yoga Studio, Ltd. reserves the right to dismiss (with or without a refund) any student who disrupts the harmony of the class or studio.
SINGLE CLASS/DROP-INS To accommodate students with unpredictable schedules, we allow anyone to drop-in anytime with no prior reservation (on rare occasions, space will not be available in a fully registered class). $20/class EXTRA DROP-INS FOR REGISTERED STUDENTS If you’re a registered student (full or partial) seeking an additional class, you may drop-in to any class at a reduced rate. $16/class for registered drop-in MULTIPLE WEEKLY CLASS REGISTRATIONS & DISCOUNTS Register for two full quarter weekly classes and take $50 off your total; register for three full quarter weekly classes and take off $108.

During severe weather conditions or other emergencies, we will post all cancellations on the studio website and on the outgoing voicemail at 703.525.9642.
SENIOR DISCOUNT Seniors (age 60 and up) take $10 off full quarter registration. MAKE-UPS Use up all your classes as you like during the span of the quarter in which you’re registered. Consider your registered weekly class your “homeroom” for yoga. If you miss homeroom, you can make it up in any other class on the current schedule, before or after your absence. All make-ups must be taken during the quarter for which you are registered and may not be carried forward.
