Summer 2016
Time by Annie Moyer
By media standards and our collectively shrinking attention span, it's ancient news by now that Prince died in April at age 57. For some, it was just another day in the headlines. For others, it was a moment of shock and a day or two of head-shaking and deep sighs. But for me and many of my contemporaries, it was news that took us off guard, not only by the surface-level surprise of it, but by the deep emotional stab. If you came of age in the early 80s through the early 90s in any capacity – as an adolescent, or a young adult, or an emerging sexual being, or a spiritual seeker, or a fan of hybrid soul-rock-funk-jazz-r&b, or all of the above, then you knew Prince. Odds are good that you more than knew him. Even better odds say that his music is etched in memory as soundtrack to pivotal moments and defining periods of your young life – high school, college, the birth of enduring friendships, the planting of professional seeds, the quick explosion or long burn of passionate love affairs, the early-stage evolution of self-discovery. If this speaks to you, the days following the news of Prince were flooded with memories probably not touched in years. If your young life fits into a different chronology, you can swap Prince for some other creative voice, and still relate. News of any icon’s sudden passing makes old friendships sing familiar tunes, fun times ride back to life on pulsing beats, and old wounds feel fleetingly fresh. When life is in everyday mode, time feels endless. It stretches out over long chains of linked days and layered events. We lose track of beginnings and endings. Some little piece of the psyche believes that times past are not times forever disappeared. And then a defining voice from a discrete portion of time is silenced forever, and we are thrust into recognizing that life is finite. The strings of attachment are forcibly severed, rather than persisting indefinitely while memories invisibly fray. The Yoga Sutras of Patanjali are clear about the causes of suffering, and first on the list is that we forget the truth of impermanence. We know it intellectually, but because time is slippery and life is unpredictable, we don’t feel it emotionally until we are forced. The marking of the past by a presentday event exposes our small delusions of immortality, silenced by the roaring, onward march of life. Why are we so upset at the passing of a celebrity from our youth? We weep for Prince because we weep for time.

Thank you Judith, for 20 years of bright and shining guidance from the mat. Judith was one of the very first Sun & Moon teachers, and has inspired, corrected, cajoled, and cared for hundreds of students during her time with us in both Arlington and Fairfax. General Information and Fees REGISTRATION INFORMATION AND FEES Sun & Moon is a school of yoga, with weekly classes structured to provide a wellrounded curriculum over an entire quarter. We run four quarters per year; depending on the season, the length of the quarter varies. We welcome beginners and new students at any time. Your first class is free! Once you decide to sign up for a class, you can register online at sunandmoonstudio.com; or by phone, mail, or in person. We accept credit cards, checks or cash. If you’re redeeming a gift certificate or studio credit, please do so by phone or in person. We offer the following options for class registrations:
MAKE-UPS Consider your registered class your “homeroom” for yoga. However, if you can’t make it to your registered class, you can make it up in any other class within the current quarter at either studio. Make-ups in advance of a future absence are allowed. When you are doing a make-up, sign in at the front desk and inform the teacher. All make-ups must be taken during the quarter for which you are registered; they may not be carried over to the next quarter. REFUND AND CREDIT POLICY Keeping in mind our liberal make-up policy, we understand that life circumstances sometimes get in the way, and yoga has to wait. If you must ask for a credit or a refund, they are available for the number of classes remaining in the quarter, based on the date we receive your request (not the date you last attended). Therefore, please fill out a refund/credit request form as soon as you know you can no longer attend your classes. Refunds will incur the following administrative fees: $20 for classes or 10% the cost of a workshop. Refunds by check may take up to 3 weeks to process; refunds by credit card may take up to one week. Letters of Credit are valid for one year from the date issued, and incur no administrative fee. Letters of Credit apply to classes and workshops only, and cannot be redeemed for cash or merchandise. Workshop refunds or letters of credit are available up to the day before the event. No refunds or credits are given the day of or after the workshop.
FULL QUARTER REGISTRATION We recommend this option, as it will give you the best possible yoga education and experience. Regular practice and connection to your yoga community form the cornerstone of Sun & Moon’s unique yoga environment. Full quarter price is $15/class. PARTIAL REGISTRATION If you’re joining the quarter late, or you know you’ll be traveling and unable to attend several classes, you may register for a partial quarter, with a minimum of six classes. Partial registration price is $16/class. SINGLE CLASS/DROP-INS To accommodate students with unpredictable schedules, we allow anyone to drop-in anytime (on rare occasions, space will not be available in a fully registered class). Drop-in price is $20/class.
WHAT TO WEAR AND OTHER USEFUL INFORMATION Wear comfortable “work-out” clothes; nothing too baggy so teachers can see your alignment. We practice barefoot and keep our floors clean; leave your shoes in the cubbies before entering the yoga rooms. We have men’s and women’s changing areas. No heavy perfume/cologne or noisy jewelry. For your safety, leave valuables locked and hidden in your car. Cell phones must be silenced; for the benefit of all, we strongly discourage cell phones in the yoga room. Sun & Moon Yoga Studio, Ltd. reserves the right to dismiss (with or without a refund) any student who disrupts the harmony of the class or studio.
EXTRA DROP-INS FOR REGISTERED STUDENTS If you’re a registered student (full or partial) seeking an additional class, you may drop-in to any class at the partial registration price listed above. MULTIPLE CLASS DISCOUNTS Register for two full quarter classes and take $50 off your total; register for three full quarter classes and take off $108.
EMERGENCY CLOSINGS Classes cancelled due to inclement weather or other emergency will not be rescheduled, but may be made up in any other class during the quarter. During severe weather conditions or other emergencies, we will post all cancellations on the studio website and on the outgoing voicemail at 703.525.9642.
