SUMMER 2017
Yoga and The Principle of Uncertainty by Annie Moyer
The yoga studio is not exactly a science lab, but it reflects some basic dynamics that science has attempted to explain for the last century. One example is Werner Heisenberg’s legacy in the field of physics, the Principle of Uncertainty, which states that one can only calculate the probability of a particle’s appearance in a certain time and place – never the exact placement of the particle because its existence is constantly changing. Electrons are only measurable when they are interacting with something else, he discovered. When they leap from the orbit of one atom to another (the famous “quantum leap”), they define their existence in that brief moment in time, and then they continuously re-define themselves with every spin around the atomic universe. For us nonscience-y folk, this simply means that the existence of matter, including people, is solely defined by its relationship to the existence of other matter (including humans, animals, and other living things). I am only a mother relative to my daughters. I become a sister when among my brothers and a daughter when speaking of my parents. I put on my teacher’s “hat” when yoga class begins. I wear my student “hat” when we host our visiting yoga masters. My sweet and recently passed dog Daisy understood me in other terms entirely – provider of chewy food, a warm lap and long walks around the neighborhood. To Daisy, our backyard was a racetrack, a squirrel-hunting ground and what we humans would call a bathroom. This changing nature of reality is something the original yogis intuited a couple thousand years ago. The understanding was so profound that they traced all causes of suffering back to what they termed avidya – literally, “without seeing”; figuratively, a lack of wisdom about the truth of impermanence. We never take the same breath twice, we never see two identical sunsets and we never do the same downward-facing dog, no matter how many ventures onto the mat. We are continuously being formed and re-formed at a cellular level, as is every speck and collection of matter in our universe. In his recent New York Times bestseller Seven Brief Lessons From Physics, author and physicist Carlo Rovelli says that reality is only relational. Let us treasure the relationships and the interactions we have, when we have them, and let us breathe deeply and respond wisely as we witness them changing. Sun & Moon Yoga Studio exists as such because people gather here to strengthen their mind-body unity across diverse, beautiful and certainly uncertain moments. Every day, we are grateful that this continues to be our shared reality.

Coyote Down Dog by Chuck Kleymeyer From our periodic series, Voices From the Path, where students share experiences and insights they’ve gained from being yogis in the world. Chuck has been a member of the Sun & Moon for many years. Many years ago, I experienced one of the finest of my now 17 visits to Yosemite National Park. A California buddy of mine picked me up at the San Francisco airport, and we drove straight to the Curry Village cabin I had reserved in the park, grabbing a bite and hitting the hay early so we could hike up to the top of Yosemite Falls the following day. The next morning I awoke before dawn. My friend was deep in log-sawing slumber, so I slipped outside, crossed the road in darkness and cautiously walked a familiar path to the middle of a grand meadow in the center of the Yosemite Valley floor. The path was narrow and gently winding, and I could feel the tall grasses brushing past my knees. Approximately in the meadow’s center, I paused, planted my feet, and looked up at the vast dome of starry night sky. A sliver of moon was setting in the west and Venus was rising above Half Dome that towered nearly 5,000 feet above me, its sheer granite face by now bathed in a soft, early glow. Rosetinted at first, morphing towards stony golden. Our day was dawning. Little by little I lowered my gaze back to the meadow and swept my eyes across the grasses
Noses pointed to the blushing pink sky, the coyote family was singing the sun up.
from right to left. Suddenly, out of the corner of my eye, I noticed a moving shadow. I turned my head and stared straight at it in the growing light and barely made out the shape of a lone coyote rising stiffly from its nest-like bed. Transfixed, I stood still as a rock spire. With a flowing motion, the coyote lifted its head and dropped into the most perfect downwardfacing dog I had ever seen in my life. As the coyote rose slowly back up to standing, I saw another movement, this time off to my right. It was a second coyote, head floating stiffly up, then dropping into its splendidly arching down dog. This act was followed by one silhouetted canis after another rising steadily up and flowing downward, a dozen to 15 spine-stretching creatures, all of them early-rising mammals like myself, each of us gently touched by sunlight and filling our lungs with fresh morning air.
I then heard a low note, like a taut bow drawn across the strings of a wooden cello. Other cello bows joined in from round the meadow. Noses pointed to the blushing pink sky, the coyote family was singing the sun up with individual abandonment and a collective harmony. This audible reverie ebbed and flowed and wafted for minutes on the breezes, apparently without a single breath being taken by the choir. Om, sweet om drifted across the meadow, encircled me, penetrated my chest, and settled into my soul. I did not join in, but the om-echo filled my entire body and mind, like fresh light rain. And then one by one the coyotes faded into the woods and were gone. For a long, long time, I stood motionless and silent in mountain pose, until finally I turned and walked back towards my cabin, feeling profoundly connected with all the four-legged creatures that accompanied those early humans who treaded lightly over this same meadow. All distinctions between two-legged and four-legged creatures steadily fell away. I felt as if I was inextricably woven into the fabric of the plant and animal worlds, joyfully unable to step outside it and look in, as I might have before this day. I was cognizant that, in the greater scheme of things, we are all animals, and then one day we lie down in our final savasana and die into the flowers and tall grasses. If we’re fortunate we become molecularly part of an ancient Giant Sequoia and spend the next millennium ascending into the heavens, stock still in the ultimate vriksasana, our eternal tree pose. And at our feet, future coyotes drop into down dog and rise up to sing in harmony. As I arrived back at my cabin, I knew I would never do a downward-facing dog as perfectly as any of those coyotes. But as it turns out, in every down dog I’ve done since, there has been a shadow of a coyote inside me, stretching and arching in that Yosemite Valley meadow. Om…shanti…shanti…shanti. 6

Our Foundations Program is for students of yoga who realize that yoga is a deeply intimate event for the body-mind-spirit and that its beauty lies in how differently it is expressed from person to person.
