Winter 2016
My Complaint Against Mindless Complaining by Amir
It’s always been my calling to design and build my own custom home, and this has been my major project over the past three years. Building a house is an arduous and scary process, but I do highly recommend it for the strong-willed. After watching the house rise from the earth over three seasons, I was finally able to move in last summer. While I am overjoyed about the final product, we did experience the inevitable and unavoidable delays of any major undertaking. By the time our non-negotiable move-in date arrived, we still didn't have finished stairs, built-out closets, nor a permanent front door (I could go on, but that’s kind of the point of this article). I hadn't expected not being able to unpack my belongings and completely settle in, so while I was excited to be in this extraordinary house, having to live out of boxes was aggravating. Over the next few weeks, as people would ask me about my new place, I noticed that my automatic response was to complain about its unfinished state. While most people would commiserate with my difficulties, I became tired of listening to my own complaints. I was complaining to people that couldn’t do anything to help, and noticed myself disregarding the overwhelming truth that I really enjoyed working with a very talented team of architects, designers, and builders, and what was in front of me was absolutely fantastic. And then I began to notice everyone else’s complaining about their own trials, and started wondering why we do this. I noticed that many people seemed to hang around and listen to other people’s complaints simply because they were waiting for their own turn. I noticed some people simply seeking commiseration, but also many others grumbling incessantly with no real interest in dialogue, problem solving, or human connection. I started wondering if there is actually any value in complaining. I identified one clear benefit, but with a caveat. If directed at the correct person, without venom or emotionality, a complaint can be an effective form of communicating what needs to be fixed. If something bothers us, it is our own responsibility to communicate the problem. What we don't have is the right to foster unhappiness, spread negativity, and trigger conflict by complaining to the wrong people, or complaining without a clear suggestion for and expectation of resolution. Put simply, we must say our peace to the people responsible, and then calmly and strategically follow up. I suppose complaining to a third-person could be useful if we seek advice about how to handle a situation. Otherwise, we are just spewing negative energy. Complaining is focusing on what is wrong with life. And focusing on the negatives always brings about greater negativity. Complaining never results in joy – it only sinks us deeper into misery. What’s worse is that complaining is contagious. By focusing on and drawing attention to the problems and discomforts around us, we direct other people towards them too. A more productive and healthy approach is to recognize that we are creating our own lives moment by moment, and to remember that the things we focus on are exactly the things we attract. Every day now when I come home, fall asleep, and wake up in my spectacular new home, I am overwhelmingly grateful, incredulous at the results of the project. I can barely hear a whisper of complaint in my head. 2

Add Some Yin to Your Yang by aLex Levin
omega pose
Through the lens of Chinese medicine, winter ushers in the most “yin” time of the year. Yin and yang indicate relative qualities: yin is more feminine, dark, cool, passive, receptive; yang is more masculine, hot, active, outward moving. Folding some yin into our practice complements the yang that dominates so much of our time and attention. It yields the wholeness and the power represented by the union of opposites in the yin-yang symbol and the word “ha-tha" yoga.
The poses you’ll do in a yin yoga class are familiar but you’ll do them in a completely different way. They will be close to the ground and you’ll hold them a long time, starting at three minutes and working up to ten. You’ll be encouraged to keep your muscles mostly passive and find a degree of pleasant intensity in the stretches and compressions you feel.
tadpole pose
The key is in flirting with intensity, which requires a focus much like balance poses do. It’s like adjusting the flame of a gas range when cooking. Certain recipes call for low heat, some medium, and some high. We move into the pose slowly, internally listening, watching, feeling to find just the right and sweet sensation that we can sustain for those initial three or four minutes – in stillness. Important to note that even a gentle intensity will yield a successful result, just as a low flame cooks a perfect risotto.
As your practice takes you more inside, you become more aware of all outside… The concept of receiving is more important than anything else. ~ Angela Farmer
This approach targets and nourishes our deep and quiet connective tissue: fascia, tendons, ligaments and cartilage. In particular, recent research highlights the special and integral characteristics of fascia. Fascia’s thin and sticky bands wrap around muscles and the other organs and structures, keeping everything in place inside our body, like a mummy’s gauzy straps. It also
provides an intricate webbing of support within our muscles and is intimately wired with our nervous system. The subtle energy channels are said to run through it. To serve us well, the fascia needs hydration, which yin practice stimulates. Occasionally engaging prolonged squeezes followed by release to all of these deeper connective tissues adds a bit of yin to our yang – the health of the more accessible and yang outer muscles. The task of finding just the right “flame” calls for a focus that is both relaxed enough to
reclining twist
take in the whole experience and attentive enough to discern a “hurt so good” stretch (which we want) from that of painful positioning (which we don’t want). What’s revealed is our seemingly paradoxical capacity: to fully relax our mind while simultaneously attending to something specific. This practice draws us inward when so much of our surroundings pull us outward. Listening inwardly we discover new sensations; we hear the sound of our breath and pulse, and even outer sounds are heard from a deeper place; we feel our emotions rather than just conceptually label them; we awaken to our body’s true wisdom as opposed to desperate cravings. From tired and depleted, we land where we can rest and receive.
sleeping swan
Yin practice results in a juicy feeling in the joints, ease in the body, a calm mind, a spaciousness we didn’t realize was missing, and the profound harmony that results from welcoming all parts of our self. Channel the season: give yang a generous dose of yin and discover for yourself the powerful wholeness of unity.

General Information and Fees REGISTRATION INFORMATION AND FEES Sun & Moon is a school of yoga, with weekly classes structured to provide a wellrounded curriculum over an entire quarter. We run four quarters per year; depending on the season, the length of the quarter varies. We welcome beginners and new students at any time. Your first class is free! Once you decide to sign up for a class, you can register online at sunandmoonstudio.com; or by phone, mail, or in person. We accept credit cards, checks or cash. If you’re redeeming a gift certificate or studio credit, please do so by phone or in person. We offer the following options for class registrations:
MAKE-UPS Consider your registered class your “homeroom” for yoga. However, if you can’t make it to your registered class, you can make it up in any other class within the current quarter at either studio. Make-ups in advance of a future absence are allowed. When you are doing a make-up, sign in at the front desk and inform the teacher. All make-ups must be taken during the quarter for which you are registered; they may not be carried over to the next quarter. REFUND AND CREDIT POLICY Keeping in mind our liberal make-up policy, we understand that life circumstances sometimes get in the way, and yoga has to wait. If you must ask for a credit or a refund, they are available for the number of classes remaining in the quarter, based on the date we receive your request (not the date you last attended). Therefore, please fill out a refund/credit request form as soon as you know you can no longer attend your classes. Refunds will incur the following administrative fees: $20 for classes or 10% the cost of a workshop. Refunds by check may take up to 3 weeks to process; refunds by credit card may take up to one week. Letters of Credit are valid for one year from the date issued, and incur no administrative fee. Letters of Credit apply to classes and workshops only, and cannot be redeemed for cash or merchandise. Workshop refunds or letters of credit are available up to the day before the event. No refunds or credits are given the day of or after the workshop.
FULL QUARTER REGISTRATION We recommend this option, as it will give you the best possible yoga education and experience. Regular practice and connection to your yoga community form the cornerstone of Sun & Moon’s unique yoga environment. Full quarter price is $15/class PARTIAL REGISTRATION If you’re joining the quarter late, or you know you’ll be traveling and unable to attend several classes, you may register for a partial quarter, with a minimum of six classes. Partial registration price is $16/class SINGLE CLASS/DROP-INS To accommodate students with unpredictable schedules, we allow anyone to drop-in anytime (on rare occasions, space will not be available in a fully registered class). Drop-in price is $20/class
WHAT TO WEAR AND OTHER USEFUL INFORMATION Wear comfortable “work-out” clothes; nothing too baggy so teachers can see your alignment. We practice barefoot and keep our floors clean; leave your shoes in the cubbies before entering the yoga rooms. We have men’s and women’s changing areas. No heavy perfume/cologne or noisy jewelry.
