Winter 2017
Engagement by Annie Moyer This is not about a diamond ring, but it is about another sort of union, and it’s a really difficult one. We are in the aftermath of a Presidential election unprecedented in bitterness. The result has left many in our community feeling emotionally devastated, intellectually stunned and physically ill. And, indeed, there are those who feel happy, optimistic and relieved. How to square this? And what does this have to do with yoga? To both camps, and to both questions, I believe the answer is the same: we must dig as deeply and as relentlessly as we can until our common ground is revealed. WHAT? Common ground with racists and sexists and xenophobes and anti-LGBTQ-ers and NeoNazis? Hear me: the hatred unleashed by the campaign of 2016 is unconscionable, and there are many who stand to lose so much that many others take for granted. But finding common ground is not incompatible with battling intolerance. It does not mean we accept bigotry and violation of any person’s civil and human rights. It does not mean we stand by and allow hostility to poison the public square. It’s precisely the opposite. Finding common ground means we must get to work confronting what’s been here all along. It means we must get underneath these loud and obvious differences. It means we must stand up to the face of hatred and disagreement, but don’t shout it down, love it down, in the Gandhi/King/ Mandela image. And then dig it up with the spade of your compassionate heart and find out what pain underneath gave it rise. I often say in yoga class that the action is not where the action appears to be. The common struggle in tree pose is a perfect example: the action of balance is not in the apparent show of the lifted leg, it is in the deep anchor of the standing foot. Likewise, the outward show of hostility and prejudice is absolutely driven by some inner compulsion of pain and suffering. Let’s listen up and learn what that’s about, exactly. Get active. Reach a hand across the aisle of ideological divide. Grab hold of the hand that looks least like your own, and seek to understand it. If someone says something you virulently disagree with, ask every question and really listen until you get an answer you can countenance. They may be willing to do the same in return. It’s not impossible that your answers will land in the pursuit of the same basic human needs. We discovered just this at our Community Dialogue at the studio just before the election, and learned a lot about kind speech and calm listening. The essential principles of yoga say that all suffering is driven by the illusion of separation, and that union and ease are attained when we practice joy, friendliness, compassion and equanimity – not just when it’s easy and convenient, but when it feels like the last thing we want to do. Hatha yoga means, literally, the union of opposing forces. One force, by definition, has to find its opposite force in order to reconcile the energy of the two. If we remain on the surface and stick with our own kind, we will exhaust ourselves in the entanglement of our like vines, and suffer endlessly while the remedy lies underneath our roots all along. There’s no denying that we’re all growing in the same soil. Let’s dig up that dirt and plant a new garden.

Getting to Know Michelle Kunz & Valerie Short AKA the Fairfax Dynamic Duo!
The Dynamic Duo In Action : Insights into a unique approach to sharing classes Michelle: This entire idea sprang forth from one brunch. We met initially to simply explore a deeper friendship, and our strong connection sparked a ton of creative and exciting ideas! We were both already teaching at Sun & Moon and were talking about taking on additional classes, but I’m a professional opera singer and have regular conflicts, so I was hesitant, but the idea to share classes solved that problem and opened up all kinds of flexibility and freshness for both of us while exposing our students to twice the fun, expertise, and practice-strengthening instruction.
Val:
Our approach really is about creating a journey through a series of experiences for the students. We spend lots of time out of class collaborating, sharing insights from classes we have taught, what is going on in our own practice, discussing students’ progress, sequencing, what’s working, what’s not. It’s also frequent you will see one of us as a student while the other is teaching – we learn from each other and the students. We are both planners, and rather than suppressing creativity or spontaneity, our co-planning makes a framework for so much more, including co-leading an upcoming weekend retreat at Yogaville in January.
Teaching style, in their own words Michelle: Is kooky a style? I try to encourage my students to feel completely at home in the studio. We teach All Levels classes, so sometimes people come in and feel a little intimidated when it’s their first or second time and there are others who have clearly been at it for a while. Our classes are admittedly challenging, and that’s something that our students really like. But we make all the poses accessible to everyone, no matter their experience or ability. I’ll sometimes request a joke from someone, or we get tremendously goofy, so there’s a lot of laughter in my classes. I frequently say “Bring out your inner Kindergartner.” We’re so serious here in Washington. Yoga doesn’t have to be serious. Oh, and I almost always play rock music. Val: I have a saying that yoga is for every body. By teaching not only alignment but also how to pay attention to what is going on in the body and mind in each moment, I’m hopeful that those who practice with me regularly have a greater awareness to everything they do. I like to encourage students to challenge themselves while focusing on staying conscious of their body’s strengths and limits and making good decisions based on the present moment.
Teaching style, in each others’ words Michelle: Val brings meticulous attention to detail, passion, elegance, energy, creativity, and a tremendously nurturing approach together in her teaching style. I walked in once to say “hi” and she had set up the studio to emulate a beautiful spa environment. She would spread petals on the floor if she could. When I take Val’s classes I come away feeling stronger, more centered, and very cared for. If you want to be challenged in a way that feels completely safe, Val is the one.
Val: Michelle is a powerful yoga teacher who stands grounded and confident in her own authenticity. She guides students through an effective, challenging physical practice that enables the student to have some sort of a breakthrough. The breakthrough could be something in their physical practice such as tapping into their own strength or curiosity to try a new pose, to a more mental/emotional breakthrough such as an awareness to let go of an old personality pattern that does not serve them anymore. Her passion as a life coach is woven through every class.

General Information and Fees REGISTRATION INFORMATION AND FEES Sun & Moon is a classic school of hatha yoga, with weekly classes structured to provide a well-rounded curriculum over an entire quarter. Depending on the season, the length of the quarter varies. We welcome beginners and new students at any time, and your first class is free! Most of our students register for one weekly class for the whole quarter, but partial registrations and drop-ins are always available. We also offer steeper discounts for multiple weekly class registrations. Options include:

Studio credit applies to classes and workshops only, and cannot be redeemed for cash, merchandise, or a future refund.
