WINTER 2018
What Are We Doing When We Teach Yoga? by Annie Moyer Each quarter, the Sun & Moon teachers, subs, and advanced teachers-in-training gather for what we call a “Teaching Lab.” With no pre-set agenda, the informal discussion topics arise organically based on who’s in the room and what’s in the air. Sometimes the conversations land in the technical realm, and we analyze the skeleton, pool our anatomy resources, and unpack complex teaching cues. Other times we talk about what pulled us into yoga and what keeps us steeped there. Most recently, the theme swirled around the question of, “What is it exactly that we’re doing when we teach class?” Good question. The catalyst for this direction of inquiry came from a teacher who had legitimate concerns about how to handle contraindications for students who arrive carrying one or many medical diagnoses in their pockets. The list of things their doctors told them they can’t or shouldn’t do can be long and frightening. Pool together each student’s assorted list in a class-full of lists, and a complicated dinner party comes to mind. One friend is gluten-free, another is vegan, the neighbors are strictly Paleo, and the kids will only eat pasta. Add in the food allergies and the diabetes, then raise the stakes until one wrong bite means risking life-and-limb and we’re down to Swiss chard and water for dinner. What’s a yoga teacher to do? We are not medical doctors (though some of us actually are). We are not physical therapists (though some of us actually are). We are not psychotherapists or nutritionists or ordained ministers (though some of us actually are). We are guides, leading our students down a path we’ve traveled a little more frequently and/or for a little bit longer. Our relative experience and first-hand knowledge let us shine a brighter light forward for our fellow travelers, enable us to point out the scenery in finer detail, and endow us with the responsibility to issue fair warnings about the pitfalls and obstacles we may encounter with each step. Sitting back down to the dinner party metaphor, we create nourishing meals that appeal to a broad and diverse palate, lay out the buffet, and speak knowledgeably about each ingredient and its requisite benefits and risks. But that’s just the beginning. The true teaching happens during “the meal.” We remind our guests to chew. To blow on the soup if it’s too hot. To take small bites and sample the taste of a new food before we swallow wholesale and realize it wasn’t a good choice. To linger with the flavors. To observe the early digestive process as the first hint of aroma sets the salivary glands into motion. To pause between bites for moments of gratitude for the meal, and to share a kind word or connection with the fellow guests. We are teaching how to listen with discernment to the messages of the nervous system, and how to use that discernment to break free from our over-stimulated senses and fragile egos. We are teaching awareness of exactly what’s happening in small increments of time, and recognizing that what’s happening inside of us is in every way related to what’s happening around us and inside of everyone else. There’s a lot of freeze-dried, pre-packaged, factory-processed, fast-food yoga “out there.” In here at Sun & Moon, we’re cooking every day, from scratch, and with love. Thank you for sitting down at our table.

Do Less, Feel More: A Week With Gernot Huber by Anne Jablonski Yoga master T.K.V. Desikachar is quoted as saying that our yoga practice should be smarter than our habits. Thailand-based yoga teacher Gernot Huber is on a mission to help students heed that advice. The secret to getting rid of patterns that don’t serve us, Gernot says, is not trying harder, but learning to let them go. Casting aside established, stress-inducing patterns isn’t easy , but it’s possible, and Gernot makes a compelling case for discovering and mapping these blind spots so we don’t sabotage our quest for serenity. Last summer, along with a group of older yoga first-timers, eager young practitioners, and experienced yoga teachers, I joined Gernot’s weeklong retreat at the beloved Feathered Pipe Ranch in Helena, Montana, as he led students on head-to-toe diagnostic journeys, documenting them with his iPad camera, to uncover adverse habits. I discovered a lot about my own patterns of holding tension, and benefited from time with the others as we practiced becoming our own best stress detectives.

We always have the option to choose against stress, but doing so means letting go of our achievement-oriented mindset. That may also mean modifying some poses and skipping others entirely. Highlighting a prevalent trouble spot, Gernot says, “When I ask a group of students if anyone needs more neck tension in their lives, I usually get a good laugh, because that’s a pretty ludicrous proposition.” Regrettably, he continues, many yoga alignment instructions exacerbate neck tension. He invites students to gather around him as he demonstrates. He moves into bhujangasana (cobra pose) with his chin pulled as far away from his jugular notch as possible. Bulging, pained eyes, and a strangled voice help make the point. “Does this look like it feels? Am I serene yet?” He’s mimicking some of the cobra pose photos that he assembled in a collage from a Google image search. He shares those images in an eye-opening instructional video about neck tension. The pictures reveal sharp contrasts in alignment: from necks moved into extreme and awkward hyperextension to “happy” necks elongating in a gentle arc out of spacious spines. Gernot then eases unhurriedly back into cobra, this time attentive to moving from the center so he doesn’t needlessly restrict breathing. His face is softer, and breath brings the shape to life as he speaks easily about the “deliberateness and deliciousness” we can all savor along the way to, and in, any posture. One by one, he asks each of us to move into a familiar pose while he snaps an iPad photo. Then he offers customized, unpretentious advice about creating more room for the breath and teasing the neck toward a more spacious neutrality. He takes a second “after” photo. Even practiced, alignment-savvy teachers are startled at the degree of neck hyperextension in their “before” images. I’m one of them. The photographic evidence of my strained upper body sporting rounded shoulders capped off with an upand out-tilted chin is a revelation. Most problem patterns, he explains, stem from creating too much effort. “We tend to think that if we want to get something done, we must do something,” he says. “The brain can contract a muscle by sending the appropriate nerve signals, but there is no neurological pathway to send a relaxation message. The only way to relax a muscle is to stop contracting it. Relaxation is literally the art of undoing, one that most of us have not practiced because we didn’t know it mattered, or even existed.” To make our yoga practice more beneficial, Gernot has this simple advice: do less, feel more. Insights like these — along with calming guided meditations and asana and breathing classes to help us practice our new serenity-enhancing, stress-neutralizing skills — made for a potent and joyful week of learning. It’s a great thing, discovering a great teacher. Excerpted from www.shutupandyoga.com , “Undoing Tension on The Yoga Mat” by Anne Jablonski

Want to experience a weekend with Gernot? He’ll be right here at Sun & Moon, April 6 - 8. Want to experience the Feathered Pipe Ranch? Join Amir and Anne Jablonski this summer at the third annual Mindful Unplug, August 11 - 18.

Sun & Moon reserves the right to dismiss (with or without a refund) any student who disrupts the harmony of the class or studio.
EMERGENCY CLOSINGS Classes cancelled due to inclement weather or other emergency will not be re-scheduled. Registered students may make up missed classes in any other class during the quarter. During severe weather conditions or other emergencies, we will post all cancellations on the studio website and on the outgoing voicemail at 703.525.9642 up to one hour before the start time of the next class.

Flex Passes are good for six months from purchase; no refunds on Flex Passes; extensions granted only with management approval in cases of documented illness or injury. Bliss Passes issued via monthly auto-renew to the student’s credit card through our secure online payment processing system; student’s credit card information is never stored in any Sun & Moon database; Bliss Pass is not tied to actual attendance and no retroactive refunds will be made; non-transferrable; cancel anytime with no fee (allow one week before next billing cycle); expired credit card yields a $10 administrative fee; initiating a monthly bliss pass acknowledges a reduced class schedule during major holiday periods; no partial months.

Practice Deeply, Practice Well For a healthy dose of yoga community, deeper study, and masterfully-guided practice, here’s our lineup this winter and spring of visiting senior teachers. We carefully cultivate relationships with national and internationally-based teachers whose viewpoints on yoga align with ours. They teach. They inspire. They guide. They connect. We are grateful.
