On Thinking by Amir
Our ability to think is an essential human trait — we all need to communicate, plan, and make decisions. The problem is not that we think, but that we think all the time and we rarely think anything new. It’s as if we have an endless recording of the same thoughts over and over — a recording of endless chatter that we can’t turn off. Rather than being relaxed, our minds get stuck in the mode of constantly “working” through thoughts and creating stress. Over-thinking brings about fear, anger, frustration and insomnia. Mindful breathing helps our thinking slow down and gives the mind a vacation from the endless chatter. When our thinking slows, we free ourselves from worries about uncertainties in the future and being bound by regrets of the past. If we train our mind to simply say “I am breathing in” and “I am breathing out,” the words simply remind us of our observation of our breath, and our mind takes a vacation from the work of having to think through thoughts. When you put mindful breathing into practice, you will undoubtedly find your mind will return to thinking. It is unlikely that your mind will stay on your breath very long without wandering away. When this happens, just make a light mental note that you are “thinking” and return to your breath. It’s tempting to try to resolve issues or “finish stories.” Again, this is just more distraction - simply focus on your breath again. There is wisdom in letting go of whatever thoughts are seducing your mind and knowing that you can access a deeper peace and happiness simply by being mindful. The genius of mindful breathing is that it’s a simple study of the inner workings of the mind. We see how easy it is to judge ourselves even when doing something as basic as observing our breath. But to step out of the judge’s chambers, to step out of the courtroom altogether, is to find fresh air, lots of space, and a refreshingly quiet, nurturing, and welcoming expanse of freedom. 2
Waking into Wisdom...and Action by Alex Levin
Our society carries a deep-rooted belief that many aspects of our lives are burdens to be overcome, and that suffering through work is the mandatory path to happiness, health and other rewards. It is no surprise that in response our culture has arrived at the point of considerable respect, and craving, for the feeling of wellbeing—energy flowing freely. We are seekers of stress-relief. Could it be, however, that the conflict-free state we discover in yoga need not be just pleasant respite, but the state we live from to peacefully and productively travel our individual and collective paths? In other words, imagine the metaphor of cozy hibernation as deep rest and regeneration as a product that becomes the fertile ground for action. After the deep rest, the hungry animal is ready for the hunt as the thawing earth comes to life. Its rested and relaxed state facilitates skillful action. So, continue to imagine that this kind of rested and relaxed state is not just something we can achieve once in a while under the right conditions, but the centering moment for every movement, every thought, every decision. You are already practicing it. In the comfortable, familiar yoga setting, guided by the teacher you enjoy, and in not having to think too much, you are gradually becoming the embodiment of peace. You are learning to be that, and to simultaneously focus your attention on a specific instruction. Sometimes your yoga puzzle is unfamiliar, difficult, and even unpleasant. But you trust your teacher, and having come to know the underlying calm center of yourself, you become increasingly skilled at observing, and honoring, your own particular experience. And in that more thorough awareness, you maneuver with your body and breath—instead of against them. This skillful process can become the new paradigm for meeting everything life brings you. Achieving this clarity does not imply that life gets simpler or that your problems magically melt away. It is the approach that changes, and that changes everything. In fact, as your yoga practice keeps you centered and improves your perception, you will
likely experience conflict and pain that you have avoided or denied up to this point. In “The Untethered Soul,” Michael Singer writes of this process: This journey is one of passing through exactly where you have been struggling not to go. As you pass through that state of turmoil, the consciousness itself if your only repose. You will just be aware that tremendous changes are taking place.
All your challenges are perfect opportunities to replace “fight or flight” with the restored and relaxed attitude. It will not be easy because we are so well schooled in the method of struggle. But the effort is simply your willingness to shift to “the repose of consciousness” for an instant. In that shift, your situation will be illuminated—accurately assessed. The right tools and level of exertion will be obvious, unconfused by emotions, memories or anxieties that are not actually present. For example, you’ll know if fast and firm action is needed, or if patient waiting is wisest just now. You’ll be most effective, appropriate and energy efficient. And so, let yourself be addicted to the sweet bliss yoga classes induce. Use it to master the shift to steadiness and ease, as often as possible. Let the conscious compassion you find be the way your awareness looks out at the world. More and more, well-being will be your natural state, rather than only an occasional treat.

Triangle Talk by Allegra Gulino
Triangle (trikonasana) is a familiar standing pose commonly introduced in Level 1 classes. This early introduction forces an immediate confrontation with ourselves and plants the seeds for self-inquiry. At first glance, triangle seems to “favor” flexible students, while those who are not that flexible are immediately challenged by the pose and their egos. Voices saying, “I’m the tightest one in class,” “how depressing,” or even “wow, look at how great I’m doing!” are ego-based. Observing the ego’s roller coaster of inflation and defeat during the flowing dichotomy of easy and difficult poses always shows its destructive nature. Who wants to ricochet between pride and shame all the time? Detaching ourselves from our egos, shows how absurd, competitive, and ultimately distracting the voices are. We realize how much more kind, honest and attentive we can be when we are not on the ego ride. Each step motivates us by increasing our capacity for true perception in yoga class but also throughout our lives. Now, grab your blocks, step your feet a leg’s length apart and parallel. Put blocks behind your heels. Your legs are straight, but your knees are not locked. Turn your left foot 90 degrees and your right foot 45 degrees or half way towards the front. A frequent mistake is leaving the back foot at 90 degrees. The back leg is key to the stability of the pose. Spread your toes out and press them down while rooting your heels into the ground. Let that stability grow up the legs by squeezing your feet towards the center line of your body and the leg muscles in towards the bones. Use an inhale to lengthen your spine upward and raise your arms out to the sides at shoulder height. Face your palms towards the floor and draw your
4
shoulder blades slightly in towards each other and down your back. This will cause your chest to lift. Exhale and draw in your belly. Inhale again to lengthen the spine more, soften the front groin and begin to fold at that hip with the torso over the front leg. Allow your flexibility in the moment, not your ego, to dictate where your lower arm ends up resting. The choices from least challenging to most are: elbow on front thigh, hand on front shin, hand on block (3 possible heights) on the pinky toe side of the front foot, hand on front foot, hand on floor on pinky toe side of front foot. Test the appropriateness of your choice. Does it feel energizing and somewhat challenging? Is your face relaxed? Can you breathe? Is your spine still long, including the neck? Are your knees still straight, but not locked? Are your arms still like airplane wings with the top one directly over the bottom? All of these are signs of a good placement choice for the bottom arm. A deeper option now is to turn your head and gaze at your top thumb. To come out, exhale to reground your feet and legs, then inhale and unfold from your front hip, bringing your head over your pelvis again. Now —try the other side.
Teacher Feature Meet Carol Stehl
What do you like most about yoga? It depends on what day you ask! On Monday, I might like the physicality of it; on Tuesday, I might like how it trains me to focus; on Wednesday, I might be into the coolness of pranayama; on Thursday, I might be in wonderment over the opening it creates on all “levels” — in body, mind, and spirit. Friday, I just might be all over the challenge. Then, on Saturday, I could be appreciating the beauty of the sangha (community) that yoga brings into my world. But, okay, MOST of all, I’d have to say I like the overall benefits of wellness and wholeness yoga offers to anyone and everyone: the short, the tall, the sick, the well, the injured, the young, the old, the rich, the poor. It matters not one’s situation in life, the benefits of yoga are immeasurable and available to everyone. You don’t even have to “believe” or know what they are. It just happens. What benefits have you experienced? The benefits I’ve seen are downright astounding! I was initially drawn to yoga for its physical benefits, not knowing of the emotional and spiritual “exercise” yoga also offers. When I first started practicing yoga eight years ago, I discovered a continual increase in strength, flexibility and balance. I then began noticing benefits on the mental and emotional side, which have served to change my life drastically. I felt I’d discovered a big secret in learning how to accept the bumps and challenges of life; it became easier. Then I soon realized a “surprise benefit,” which I found the most important. Not only was yoga helping to clear my path physically, mentally, emotionally, and energetically, but also spiritually. I could see how the practice of yoga was allowing me to more easily “tap into” the peace, calm and stillness residing deep at the core of my being, my True Nature. I found how yoga was helping to remove all the layers of junk that build up and block my path to this peace that is my birthright. What a saving grace! I’ve been able to connect on deeper and deeper levels with the Divine, something I’ve continually sought all my life. I’m more at peace, handle conflicts and cope with stress with much more ease. Mentally and emotionally, I feel more focused, more secure, more confident and more joy than ever before. Yoga leads to wholeness, and wholeness leads to holiness!
Why did you decide to become a yoga teacher? I knew from very early on in my practice that I wanted to teach yoga. I had a feeling of “knowing” like I’d never had before. It was actually a little shocking to picture myself as a teacher when I’d only been practicing for two years. I had a little talk with myself: “You want to do WHAT? You don’t yet know squat about this practice!” So, I just went with it, and it stayed with me. At a yoga retreat that I’ve returned to annually for years, the director (a very revered and wise yogini) told me straight and simply, “it is your dharma to teach yoga, Carol!” And then it hit me! I finally accepted the idea and realized how lucky I was, for once in my life, to know I’m on the right path. I was grateful to be so clear about it. I took some teacher training from her, and later enrolled in the SMYS 300-hour program and began teaching three years ago. I still have my “day job” as an economic consultant in D.C. But my favorite “job” is teaching yoga. What else are you passionate about? Animals! I love all animals. I feel such an affinity for them all. My big focus right now is my new dog, Shadow, a two-year-old, 90-pound Labrador mix. Shadow was unwanted, untrained, neglected and mistreated by his first TWO families. Talk about “living your yoga.” Well, in my mere four months with Shadow, he has taught me years’ worth of the very qualities I’m always seeking to enhance. More patience, more courage, more loving-kindness, more acceptance of “what is,” and more about living just as he does — in the moment!
I’m also passionate about connecting/BEing with friends and family, and traveling. I like to do what I can to help/encourage others in whatever way I can, as there are so many in need! I’m hoping to further develop a new charitable program originally created by fabulous yoga teacher Laureen Smith called “Yoga for Good”. Each month, a different teacher volunteers time to “give” a donations-only class to benefit the charity of her/his choice. Sun&Moon graciously offers space for these classes at both studios (Fairfax and Arlington) for the various causes supported.

General Information and Fees
REGISTRATION INFORMATION Sun&Moon classes are offered weekly on a seasonal session basis (four sessions per year). We are a school of yoga with our classes structured to provide a well-rounded curriculum over an entire session. We recommend that students register for the full session, although we do allow students to attend on a partial session or drop-in basis. Please read all of our policy information before filling out the registration form on the following page. We accept beginners or new students at any time throughout the session as long as space is available in your class choice. If you are joining the session late, partial session registration is available at discount, provided that you sign up for six classes or more. Local students who have never been to Sun&Moon before, and are considering registering for classes, may take their first class free to determine if Sun&Moon is the right studio for them (ask our staff for terms and information). We accept Visa, Mastercard, Discover, checks or cash. A $35 fee will be charged for checks returned to Sun&Moon. If you fax in a credit card registration, please do not mail a copy — you may be charged twice. SINGLE CLASS/DROP-INS A drop-in is anyone taking a single class for which they have not registered as a full session. Those dropping in to an additional class during a session for which they have registered may pay the discounted full-session registration rate. Drop-ins are permitted only if space is available, so please call first. You may come to a class that is full, you will need to wait until class begins to see if you can take the place of a "no show" that day. Please inform the teacher that you are taking the class as a drop-in. REGISTER EARLY Registrations are taken on a first-come, first-served basis. Please register early to avoid disappointment. Sorry, we do not call to confirm registrations. However, we will call if the class you requested is full. FEES 75 and 90 minute classes: $15/class with session registration $18/class to drop-in
45 and 60 minute classes: $13/class with session registration $15/class to drop-in
MAKE-UPS We have a very liberal make-up policy. If you miss a class, you may make it up in any other yoga class within the current session at either studio. If you know you will miss classes in the future, you may make them up in advance of your absence. When you are doing a make-up, inform the teacher of the class that you are doing a make-up class and inform them of the class you are registered for. All make-ups must be taken during the session for which you are registered; they may not be carried over to the next session. Classes cancelled due to inclement weather may be made up during the session. Call the studio or visit our website to find out if your class has been cancelled. REFUND POLICY You must fill out a Refund Request form. The forms are available at the front desk. The date the written request is received rather than the last class attended is the criterion for determining refunds. • A $30 non-refundable administration fee is deducted from all tuitions. • After week one, all tuition less the $30 registration fee is refunded. • After week two, 75% of tuition less the $30 registration fee is refunded. • After week three, 50% of tuition less the $30 registration fee is refunded. • After week four, 25% of tuition less the $30 registration fee is refunded.
No refunds are given after the fifth class. Refunds are made by check and may take up to six weeks.
WHAT TO WEAR Comfortable clothes such as shorts, footless tights or leggings with a T-shirt or leotard. Please do not wear baggy sweats or pants (this inhibits the teacher’s ability to spot misalignments). Please remove shoes before entering the yoga rooms. We have men and women’s changing areas. No heavy perfume/cologne or noisy jewelry please. Please leave cell phone and valuables locked in your car. Sun&Moon Yoga Studio, Ltd. reserves the right to dismiss (with or without a refund) any student who disrupts the harmony of the class and/or studio environment.
