Spring 2013
Summoning Positive Energy by Amir
At certain points in life, we all encounter challenges we are reluctant to face. We don’t have a choice – stressful situations happen. However, we do have a choice about the attitude and energy that we bring to those situations. It's easy to let our aversions intensify to the point that we focus more on the negative emotions rather than the truth of the situation. One power that you have to see your way clear is to consciously summon positive energy. There is sufficient clinical research showing how positive emotions improve the quality of our lives, and not just in the short term. It’s no shock that negative emotions stimulate the sympathetic nervous system, creating stress. You may notice that when you are anxious, your breath constricts, your heart races, or your stomach aches - all common effects of negative emotions. In turn, these physical symptoms mentally distract us from making clear judgments. When we are under stress, we have a limited number of perceived responses – “flight or fight” does not provide many options. We end up feeling stuck in the predicament and held hostage by our emotional response. When we experience positive emotions, we have the freedom to expand our attention enough to imagine a variety of different responses to any given situation. We are able to create patterns of thinking that are efficient, open-minded, inspired and inclusive. In addition, one could argue that positive emotions provide resilience to stress-inducing events, shielding against the amount of stress we carry that may lead to disease. Practicing yoga asana and meditation is one of the best ways to elicit positive emotional energy. For instance, back-bending poses can elevate a down mood by opening the chest for an expansive inhalation. Exhaleintensive poses like forward folds can calm an agitated mind. Have you ever noticed the effect that your yoga practice has on your emotions? It’s like a welcome sense of spaciousness. After practicing yoga, we feel happier, more content, and more at ease. Usually our positive energy comes to the surface, bringing with it revived sense of humor, patience, awareness and concentration. As we surrender, we let go of frustrations, fear, and worry. And the influence of positive energy makes it easier to make choices that are more reflective, lifeaffirming, and lucid. Anytime a potentially negative circumstance arises – pause. Give yourself an opportunity to take actions that conjure up positive energy. Maybe take a few minutes for your favorite yoga poses or yogic breath. Imagine that you are through the difficulties and that you are happy. You can always use this power as your medicine; you just have to trust that it’s there deep within you, and summon it to the surface.

Yoga on Wheels by Laura Haywood-Leigh As signs of spring tempt me out into the sunshine and onto the bike trail, it’s time for me to renew my "yoga of cycling” practice. This idea developed for me a few seasons ago when I was pedaling along and became aware of my position on my bike. I was hyper-extending my neck and it ached. My wrists were hurting, too. Both of these areas felt strained after my last ride, I remembered. I also felt sort of precariously perched on my bike. Why not play around a bit and infuse my cycling experience with some of the principles of my yoga asana practice? I wondered if I could find a more easeful position on my bike by bringing my body into better alignment. Over time, my “yoga of cycling” practice has evolved to look something like this: First, I get grounded. I drop my tailbone into gravity, and imagine energetically sinking down into my bike seat, toward the earth. This helps me feel much more secure and stable on my bike. Then I lengthen my spine. I extend it forward, vertebrae by vertebrae, so that it becomes nice and long. Space is created from the opposite actions of grounding down into my seat and lengthening my spine forward and up. Next I gently balance and center my skull on top of my spine, dropping my chin so I ride looking forward and slightly up. I open my chest by spreading my collarbones apart. I broaden my shoulders away from each other, and then allow the bottom tips of my shoulder blades to move toward each other. Then I tuck my shoulder blades under, toward my heart. I like to be in life with an open heart as much as possible. Next I check that I am not collapsing forward and dumping all my weight into my wrists. I do this by energetically pulling my weight up through my arms, over my shoulders and back into my tail. This “weightback” position has made all the difference for me on my bike. Spinning my upper arm bones in also helps to energize my arms and support my upper body. Then I relax my shoulders. Because I haven’t found a hand position that’s comfortable for an entire ride, I check in with my hands and fingers frequently and try different adjustments to see how they feel. Finally, I soften any other areas of my body that may be tense, like my throat and face, and then I breathe deeply into my belly. Ahhhhh. I notice my surroundings, grateful to be where I am, present to life exactly as it is in each precious moment. I allow myself to be guided along by remaining open and receptive, and by listening for internal cues as to what’s next. Ever mindful of my breathing, I extend yoga, the If youʼre interested in more tips on beautiful union of body, mind and spirit, into my outdoor biking yoga for cyclers, keep your eyes on experience. In this way, I practice “yoga of cycling.” the summer workshop schedule for Enid Kassnerʼs workshop on this topic.

Master Teacher Spotlight: Beyond Doing, Beyond Understanding by Tias Little
This phrase comes from the Zen teachings and is part of the path to realization. It is relevant to the practice of yoga, and is a topic I explored in the class “Do you do Yoga?” that I taught in Estes Park for the Yoga Journal conference in 2010. We are a culture of doers. So much of our time is allocated to doing that we are doer devotees. We become chained to our to-do-lists. It is a golden chain, for we believe that it is all for good. In yoga classes, the Protestant work ethic is alive and well, where students think, the more poses I do, the harder I push, the better off I will be. Parents parent in the same way, and the mantra “Good job!” is usually the first thing a mom says to a child that draws a picture of a tree, or toots on her recorder. At a young age, children learn that doing is best. Bob the Builder is a boy’s first guru. However, in yoga training, a whole different ethic is required. In fact, a yoga practice involves as much unlearning as learning. The practitioner must rewire the ‘habit body’ by unlearning patterns of physical tension. Through meditation (dhyana), we unlearn patterns of psychological fixation and drop petty emotions.

Not-doing is far more challenging than doing, especially for those of us who have been reared since seven years of age to strive, excel and achieve. How do you do not-doing? In the Taoist tradition, non-doing is held in high esteem. Called wu-wei, it is a central tenet for following the Tao. In Chapter 48 of the Tao-te-ching, it is said, In the pursuit of the Tao, every day something is dropped. Less and less is done Until non-action is achieved. When nothing is done, nothing is left undone. In Patanjali’s Yoga Sutras, not-doing is an essential attribute to an accomplished asana—prayatna shaithilya samapattibhyam (chapter II verse 47). This verse suggests that yoga-asana must have a quality of ease, non-striving and no-force. This is a real test for the strivers in the room! This is challenging for non-striving does not mean complete passivity. A yoga practitioner must learn to actively relax. Active relaxation has a very different feel than passive relaxation. Active relaxation includes alertness and wakefulness, yet without any grip, clench or strain. Perhaps even more tricky for yoga practitioners is not-understanding. We assume, typically, that we must develop the mindfulness, concentration and attention to come to understand what is happening. We have expectations that we will eventually come to a deep and profound understanding of things. We approach yoga studies the way we approached chemistry, Spanish or the SATs in high school. Yet like not-doing, the maturation of a yoga practice must include not-understanding. Can we experience things without having to ‘get’ them? Can we allow ourselves to receive in ways that are outside our conscious control? Can we trust ourselves to absorb things intuitively, in the dream-scape of the unconscious? Can we be at peace with not-knowing — not-knowing how things will go in the future, not-knowing how things are going right now, and not-knowing what may become of what is past? “Beyond doing, beyond understanding” involves a tremendous spirit of letting go. When we let go in this way, it is remarkable what we may receive, just outside the reach of our willful attempt to grasp. Class Descriptions
Level 1: A basic introduction to yoga breathing, postures, and relaxation. Intended for beginners with no previous experience, or those looking for a gentle and basic ongoing practice. Level 2: Refines the basics and provides more detailed alignment instructions and breath work. Level 3*: Teaches more advanced standing and seated poses, pranayama, and begins integrating inversions, deeper backbends, and meditation techniques. Level 4*: Intensifies an already-strong asana practice by developing a deeper internal and energetic understanding of yoga. Inversions, arm balances, wheel and lotus poses are included, as well as advanced pranayama and meditation. All Levels: Includes the basics as well as options for deeper practice. Appropriate for all but brand new beginners. Combination Classes (i.e. Level 1/2): For those comfortable in the lower level, and interested in exploring the next. Adaptive Yoga: Slow-paced practice combining breath, deep relaxation, and gentle movement to restore strength, range of motion and vitality. Modified for individual needs. Ideal for students with health concerns. Advanced Practice: Deep investigation of one topic each week that we would not take the time to incorporate in a regular-level class. Topics include anatomy, technique, energy, and traditional yoga wisdom. In-Depth studies requirement; open to all intermediate and advanced yogis. Senior faculty rotates each week. Feldenkrais: Awareness Through Movement technique reveals and alters behaviors responsible for chronic stress, tension, and pain; facilitates recovery from injury and improves creativity and skills. The focus is not on what you do but on how. Gentle Yoga: See “Adaptive” Yoga. Kids: Play and work with poses to increase flexibility and strength, develop coordination and posture, and explore relaxation and stress reduction tools. Yoga stories and/or visualizations included. For elementary ages.
8
Kundalini Yoga: Known as the yoga of awareness, in body, mind and soul. Each classe includes a kriya (a set of movements with an intended result), breathing techniques, mantras, meditation and relaxation. Classes are open to students at all levels of experience. Mat Pilates 1: This exercise system focuses on correct breathing, posture, and core strengthening. Mat Pilates 2: The progression in this class is faster than Pilates 1 and provides an energetic, full body workout. Prior Pilates experience necessary. Meditation: Learn to cultivate a deeply satisfying inner quiet and mindfulness. Includes short dharma talks and various meditation tools and practices. Open to beginners and advanced students alike. No registration necessary. Middle and High Schoolers: A playful yet disciplined practice of asana, pranayama, and relaxation, intended to help reduce stress and promote strength, selfesteem, focus, balance, and positive body images. Moms & Babies: Bring along your baby, from infant to almost crawling, for this welcoming postnatal class that emphasizes how yoga can help you stay physically and emotionally strong and centered during baby’s first months. Pre-K Yoga Fun: 30-minute class filled with breath, movement, stories, music and games for kids ages 3-5. Each class ends with relaxation. Yoga helps pre-schoolers increase flexibility, strength, coordination and posture. Prenatal Yoga: An all-levels course to support and empower expectant mothers. Learn ways to ease aches and pains, make the body comfortable during pregnancy, and use the breath to calm and steady the mind. Restorative Yoga: Relax in yoga postures where the body is entirely supported by blankets, blocks, and other props. An ideal way to end the work-week and renew the nervous system.
Toddlers Together: A fun romp for caregivers and toddlers. We will incorporate asana, stories, music, and creative movement to experience the joy and heartfelt wisdom of yoga with a child-like flow. 16 mos – 4 yrs, adult/child. Vinyasa 1**: A fast-paced, challenging practice that builds stamina and strength through a series of flowing poses. Students should be comfortable coming quickly into standing poses with good alignment and should be practicing at Level 2 or above. Appropriate for beginning Ashtanga-style and power yoga practitioners. Vinyasa 2**: Adds more advanced poses and challenging transitions to the fast, flowing pace of Vinyasa 1. Open to Level 3+ students or those comfortable with Vinyasa 1 and ready to expand. Appropriate for experienced Ashtangastyle and power yoga practitioners. Yoga for the 12 Steps: Traditional 12 Step programs offer a remedy for a wide range of dependencies, but they do not address the physical dimension. In this class we practice movement, breathing, and conscious relaxation to develop awareness of and balance between the physical, mental, emotional, and spiritual. Both yoga and 12 Step philosophies are woven to provide a framework for authentic living and personal growth. This is not a meeting. It’s a weekly space for anyone seeking a retreat from the challenges of life.
* Classes at Level 3 and above involve more difficult levels of practice; teachers may invite students to join a lower level class when appropriate. **Vinyasa classes are not recommended until a student has completed at least two quarters of Level 2.

General Information and Fees REGISTRATION INFORMATION Sun & Moon classes are offered weekly on a quarterly basis. We are a school of yoga with our classes structured to provide a wellrounded curriculum over an entire quarter. We recommend that students register for the full quarter, although we do allow students to attend with partial registration and/or on a drop-in basis. Please read all of our policy information before filling out the registration form on the following page. We accept beginners or new students at any time throughout the quarter as long as space is available in your class choice. If you are joining the quarter late, partial registration is available at a discount, provided that you sign up for six or more classes. Local students who have never been to Sun & Moon before, and are considering registering for classes, may take their first class free to determine if Sun & Moon is the right studio for them (ask our staff for terms and information). We accept Visa, Mastercard, Discover, checks, or cash. A $35 fee will be charged for checks returned to Sun & Moon. REGISTER EARLY Registration is on a first-come, first-served basis. You have the option to register online, or by mail, fax, or phone. Please note, we will contact you only if the class you have chosen is full. SINGLE CLASS/DROP-INS A “drop-in” class is one you are not registered for. The rate for the drop-in class is dependent on whether you are currently registered for the quarter. We offer our students who are registered in the current quarter the discounted registration rate for an additional drop-in class. Students who are not registered in the current quarter pay the full drop-in fee. Note that though we always welcome drop-ins, occasionally space will not be available in a fully-subscribed class. FEES 75- and 90-minute classes: $15/class for minimum of 6 per quarter $20/class to drop-in 45- and 60-minute classes: $13/class for minimum of 6 per quarter $15/class to drop-in

MAKE-UPS We invite you to make up a missed class in any other class within the current quarter at either studio. You may also make up classes in advance of a future absence within the current quarter. When you are doing a make-up, sign in at the front desk and inform the teacher. All make-ups must be taken during the quarter for which you are registered; they may not be carried over to the next quarter. Classes cancelled due to inclement weather may be made up during the quarter. Call the studio or visit our website to find out if your class has been cancelled. REFUND AND CREDIT POLICY Keeping in mind our liberal make-up policy, we understand that life circumstances sometimes get in the way, and yoga has to wait. If you decide you must ask for a credit or a refund, they are available for the number of classes remaining in the quarter, based on the date we receive your request (not the date you last attended). Therefore, please fill out a refund/credit request form as soon as you know you can no longer attend your classes. Refunds will incur the following administrative fees: $40 for classes, $5 for workshops. Refunds are given by check and may take up to six weeks to process. A Letter of Credit is valid for one year from the date issued, and incurs no administrative fee. Letters of Credit apply to classes and workshops only, and cannot be redeemed for cash or merchandise. Letters of Credit for workshops are available up to the day before the event. No refunds or credits are given the day of or after the workshop. WHAT TO WEAR AND OTHER USEFUL INFORMATION Comfortable clothes such as shorts, footless tights, or leggings with a t-shirt or tank top. Please do not wear baggy sweats or pants (this inhibits the teacher’s ability to spot misalignments). Please remove shoes before entering the yoga rooms. We have men’s and women’s changing areas. No heavy perfume/cologne or noisy jewelry, please. For your safety, please leave valuables locked and hidden in your car. Cell phones must be silenced; for the benefit of all, we strongly discourage cell phones in the yoga room. Sun & Moon Yoga Studio, Ltd. reserves the right to dismiss (with or without a refund) any student who disrupts the harmony of the class and/or studio environment.
