Fall 2009

Pretending to Meditate by Amir

Yoga does not value a busy mind. It does not value multi-tasking. It does not encourage us to fill the mind with more information than we already have or need. Rather, yoga teaches us to cultivate and value a quiet mind whenever possible. One of the main yoga tools that we use to create a quiet mind is the practice of meditation. To some, meditation may seem daunting, but it is possible to reach a point where it actually becomes easy, natural and spontaneous. But what if you try to meditate and it’s just not happening for you? How about trying what I call Pretending to Meditate? That is, excuse yourself from your daily tasks, find a quiet and comfortable place, turn off the telephone, computer and television, and indulge in contemplation, observation, and reflection. Nothing else. As you do this, accept that “thinking” will happen, but give yourself permission to do so without reacting with any judgment, fear, or disapproval. Studies show that the average mind has about one thought per second while we are awake — around 60,000 thoughts per day! So how many of these 60,000 thoughts are actually useful to us? Not many. Unfortunately, our minds are not naturally kicking out innovative, inspirational, or creative thoughts all the time. In fact, our minds can actually give us pain and discomfort by worrying about events that have never even happened, or likely never will. But mostly, unless we really tune into what we are thinking, our thoughts are just repetitions of the same ideas over and over. If we can at least “pretend to meditate” — to really take the time to observe and accept what is going on in our minds, without trying to control or analyze, we have the opportunity to change the quality of our mind’s contents. And when we train our mind to have quality thoughts, the chatter begins to quiet. We start to get glimpses of true quiet. And the more and more glimpses we get, the more natural it seems.

Radical Gratitude by Alex Levin

“Look around you. Everything is here for your pleasure. Your job is to find it.” Mietek Wirkus, Bioenergy Therapist

The ancient yogis say that we are truth, consciousness and bliss. We can discover what this means, what it feels like, only through direct experience. Just now, this moment, knowing as much or as little as you do, you can have the experience of truthconsciousness-bliss, or satchitananda, since it’s what you are. All it takes is to bring your attention to this moment. Let’s use a segment of a yoga practice to illustrate how simple it is. The truth is simple. We are going to notice what is absolutely true here, not what we imagine the experience to be. [Moving back and forth between down-dog and up-dog.] “I am a human being, my hands and feet on the ground, on this yoga mat. I am breathing. Feeling the massaging action in my shoulders, in my hips, in the balls of my feet. How should I tweak the next movement? Oh! I was supposed to make a phone call earlier. ... Oops, how long have I been lost in the fret of that omission? I was still moving, automatically. How wonderful! My body and breath keep working even when I’m distracted.” “There is a very simple secret to being happy. Just let go of your demand on the moment.” Adyashanti

Suppose that, during the up-dog/down-dog movement, this thought arrived: “I am so bad at concentrating. Man, even for one minute, I can’t keep my focus on my practice!” Next thought might arise as: “Ugh, there I go, being self-critical again.” Ask yourself deeply, patiently, “Is it true?” If it is, let it be, cherish your truth. But be open to knowing if

it’s really so. And you’ll know in your mind/gut/heart when something is not true. The mind noticed it (“There I go being critical again.”); and even you the reader might have felt (especially if you have similar tendencies) the resonance in your heart, the longing for self-compassion in that observation. All of our ways of sensing—physical and emotional sensation as well as thought forms—comprise the consciousness that helps us know what is true, and when un-truth is revealed it simply falls away. What is not true cannot exist once we realize that we no longer hold it dear. “Patterns of consciousness are always known by pure awareness, their ultimate, unchanging witness.” Yoga Sutra IV:18 (Chip Hartranft)

And where’s the bliss, the ubiquitous pleasure, in all this? In our investigation, it has been pure awareness looking for itself the whole time. In discomfort, of any intensity, mild or severe, our tendency is to get stuck in a particular vortex of our focus. The discomfort is the tap on our shoulder to again take up the trail tracking our bliss. Playfully, we will eventually discover that we can become more aware of the unchanging witness that is always present. Here’s how: for about six breaths, after reading this sentence, close your eyes and invite yourself to become conscious of everything you are hearing and inquire, “Where are these sounds?” Did you feel the spacious, effortless, timeless sensation of your awareness? It is in the awareness of pure awareness that, in my experience, the bliss resides. It’s always present. If you’re not sure you got it, but want to, let your practice be to notice how you are ever-drawn to seek what feels good and right. That’s your bliss, asserting the truth of its existence, through your consciousness. Nudging you toward yourself.

The Trip to Triangle by Anne Jablonski

It took years of asana practice before I let myself off the hook and “allowed” myself to customize the poses. When I first started practicing, nearly all the books and videos included some version of Extended Triangle Pose, an exquisite, heart opening standing pose that builds ankle, knee, and thigh strength and stretches the hips, groins and spine. The usual instructions to move into the pose from a wide-legged standing position always felt exactly wrong and arduous in my body. It was time to re-map the Trip to Triangle so that the whole ride and all the detours, from start to finish, felt juicy.

Try this: Begin in child’s pose. Make your way to table pose on all fours, then to low lunge, wriggling and re-tuning the shape until your front ankle is underneath the knee. Fill the shape with breath and park here for awhile as you soften around your heart, shoulders, and neck. Shift to high lunge, pivot and plant the back foot, and release the hand from the floor that’s opposite the bent knee. Rest that hand on your low back and use that as a cue to shift your attention to your spine. With the front leg still bent, create lots of space between your tailbone and the crown of your head. When your spine is long, wind your torso away from the front leg. Inflate the shape, bit by bit, lengthening both sides of your waist. Slowly straighten the front leg, continuously reassessing how you’re feeling inside. Be honest: If something feels wrong, do something to make it it feel unwrong.

Let the lower arm land softly where it likes — on your ankle, the floor, a block, your shin, or your cat. Playfully integrate all the elements of the pose from where you are now. Remember: the pose isn't the destination. You're always already at your destination.

4

Breathe like you mean it while checking in with your feet. If you're losing touch with what's happening with your foundation, pause for a few breaths to lift the toes of both feet off the floor for a few seconds to re-enliven your arches.

Allow the top arm to float away from your sacrum toward the sky, letting the shape radiate out from your heart. Bring life to the whole shape and be truthful about how you're feeling inside. Don't be afraid to wriggle. Seek out any spots that still feel compressed and soften around them, readjusting your architecture to create space inside, erasing any remaining tight spots. Tinker with the rotation of the top arm until your shoulders and neck are happy. Let every part of you participate fully in the pose, including your fingertips. Be luminous and take up lots of space. Breathe and savor. To move out of the pose, release the top arm down as you simultaneously turn your torso toward the floor and bend the front knee. Pivot the back foot and take a detour through downward-facing dog before making your way to table and, eventually, child's pose. Land here for as long as you like and, when you're ready, start a new ride on the other side.

Teacher Feature Meet Vicki Christian

When was your first introduction to yoga? I worked in a bookstore in 1989 and as I shelved books, I came across the book Yoga The Iyengar Way. Fascinated with the book and seeing some poses that I was already doing on my own, I purchased the book. I then spent many years with books and Rodney Yee and Patricia Walden videotapes. My first class, in 1996, was with Puri at Mount Vernon RECenter. I meandered awhile and after losing a pregnancy in fall 2000, was looking for something. I found Sun & Moon Yoga Studio in Springfield and started taking classes with Rixie Dennison. I felt recommitted to my journey of yoga.

Why did you want to become a teacher? When I found Sun & Moon Yoga Studio, I realized that I had a desire to share the joy of yoga that I had found with others. The Sun & Moon Teacher Training program fit my needs, especially after joining the program and finding out about my surprise pregnancy. I could take five years [and did], and take courses as I was able to. I still don’t feel like a yoga instructor, as there is still so much to learn, and consider myself a student of yoga who shares my current knowledge with others. How would you describe your style of teaching? I would describe my style as an eclectic Hatha mixture of Iyengar, Vinyasa, Ashtanga, Power, and Anusara. I really try to fit the needs of the students in each class. I try to teach yoga to the whole being — body, mind, breath, and spirit — creating a balanced energizing class to encourage connection, alignment, breath, and relaxation within the practice and life. Each student will then come away with what they heard and need or want to explore.

You teach prenatal — How is that different from a nonprenatal class? A prenatal yoga class focuses not only on the motherto-be, but also on the unborn baby and the upcoming “labor of love.” Prenatal yoga differs primarily from other yoga classes by providing a safe and supportive community of pregnant women. It also emphasizes particular poses, breathing, and relaxation techniques that help to prepare a woman physically, mentally, as well as spiritually for the marathon of labor that leads to the birth of her baby.

What do you hope to share with your students? I hope to convey a sense of yoga fitting everyone, no matter what their ability. Though we are built in different proportions and have different abilities from one another, individually we all can do yoga because yoga is not just about achieving the physical asanas. In January 2008 I found two favorite quotes that I now share with my classes: “Corpse pose is always an option.” Martha Beck

“A pose isn’t supposed to look like anything. Nobody can do a pose so it looks perfect. A pose is perfect only when you are doing the very best you can.”

Geshe Michael Roche and Christie McNally from their widely regarded book How Yoga Works,

What has been a great inspiration to your yoga practice? I enjoy taking classes and workshops from many different teachers. I am inspired and learn something from every one of them. I have taken workshops and/or classes with JJ Gormley-Etchells and with most of Sun & Moon Yoga Studio’s instructors past and present. I have also taken workshops with Rodney Yee, Erich Schiffman, Cora Wen, Anodea Judith, Cyndi Lee, Doug Keller, Baxter Bell, Jennifer Brilliant, Aadil Palkhivala, Jason Crandall, Leslie Kaminoff, Dharma Mittra and others.

What do you do in your spare time? As a mom of three (ages 10, 7, & 5) I am usually busy with them. I do enjoy gardening, reading, movies, wine festivals, the beach, hanging out with friends and family, scrapbooking, playing with my lab and great dane, and of course, doing yoga. Favorite yoga pose and why? A favorite is baddha konasana (bound angle) and all its variations — forward folding and reclining. It is very grounding, quieting, and centering for me.

All Levels: Includes the basics as well as options for deeper practice. Appropriate for all students.

Level 5: Focuses on meditation and philosophy. Intended for advanced practitioners, teachers and teacher trainees.

Combination Classes: (i.e. Level 1/2) For the student who is comfortable in the lower level, but interested in exploring the next. Gentle: Basic poses at a slow pace. Ideal for beginners and/or students with health concerns.

Integral Yoga: A holistic approach to yoga that incorporates a complete hatha routine, deep relaxation, pranayama, chanting and a short meditation. Appropriate for all levels.

Asana and the Wall: The use of ropes for alignment and therapeutics was codified by Mr. BKS Iyengar over a lifetime of teaching. Experience the potential of asansa, with the aid of ropes securely attached to a wall, in the form of deep release, extreme opening and traction. Asana will be done at the wall and on the mat, alone and with partners. Class will be limited in size, ensuring personal attention for each student.

Kids: Play and work with poses to increase flexibility and strength, develop coordination and posture, and explore relaxation and stress reduction tools. Yoga stories and/or visualizations will be presented in each class.

Meditation: A general survey of various meditation philosophies and practices. Open to beginners and advanced students alike. No registration necessary. Middle and High Schoolers: A playful yet disciplined practice of asana, pranayama and relaxation, intended to help reduce stress and promote strength, self-esteem, focus, balance, and positive body images.

Moms & Babies: Bring along your baby, from infant to almost-crawling, for this welcoming postnatal class that emphasizes how yoga can help you stay physically and emotionally strong and centered during your first months together. Strengthen, stretch and tone your body with emphasis on support for feeding, holding, lifting and carrying your baby, as well as moving more easily through your daily life. Learn basic techniques of baby massage and movements that encourage neuromuscular development in babies.

Philosophy & Meditation: A group gathering for meditation practice and reading and discussion of yogic texts, both contemporary and traditional.

Pilates 1: This exercise system focuses on correct breathing, posture and core strengthening. No admittance after third week without permission of the instructor. Pilates 2: The progression in this class is faster than in Pilates 1 and provides an energetic, full body workout. Prior Pilates experience necessary.

Pilates/Yoga: A combination of the best of both traditions.

Pre-Natal Yoga: An all-levels course which supports and empowers expectant mothers. Teaches ways to ease aches and pains, make the body comfortable during pregnancy, and use the breath to calm and steady the mind.

*Vinyasa 1: A fast-paced, challenging practice that builds stamina and strength through a series of flowing poses. Students should be comfortable coming quickly into standing poses with good alignment and should be practicing at Level 2 or above. Appropriate for beginning Ashtangastyle and power yoga practitioners. *Vinyasa 2: Adds more advanced poses and challenging transitions to the fast, flowing pace of Vinyasa 1. Open to Level 3+ students or students comfortable with a Vinyasa 1 practice who are ready to expand their focus and core strength. Appropriate for experienced Ashtanga-style and power yoga practitioners.

Yoga for Recovery: A slow paced class which combines yogic breathing, deep relaxation, and gentle movement to restore strength, range of motion and vitality. The practice will be modified for individual needs.

Yoga for the 12 Steps: Traditional twelve-step programs offer a spiritual remedy for healing from addiction, but do not address the physical dimension. We will practice physical movement and postures, breathing exercises, and conscious relaxation; as well as begin to develop awareness and balance and connect our physical bodies to our mental, emotional and spiritual selves. Both Yoga and the twelve-step philosophies are woven to provide a framework for authentic living and personal growth. Beginners very welcome and embraced.

Yoga for Two: Come with a partner and for individual and partner poses. Have fun, do some Yoga and learn how to develop a practice for 2. No experience required.

*These classes require completion of at least two sessions of the previous level and permission of the teacher before registering. TEACHER BIOS For a listing of Sun&Moon teachers, please go to our website at www.sunandmoonstudio.com and click on “about sun&moon” and then “our teachers”. 7

General Information and Fees

REGISTRATION INFORMATION Sun&Moon classes are offered weekly on a seasonal session basis (four sessions per year). We are a school of yoga with our classes structured to provide a well-rounded curriculum over an entire session. We recommend that students register for the full session, although we do allow students to attend on a partial session or drop-in basis. Please read all of our policy information before filling out the registration form on the following page. We accept beginners or new students at any time throughout the session as long as space is available in your class choice. If you are joining the session late, partial session registration is available at discount, provided that you sign up for six classes or more. Local students who have never been to Sun&Moon before, and are considering registering for classes, may take their first class free to determine if Sun&Moon is the right studio for them (ask our staff for terms and information). We accept Visa, Mastercard, Discover, checks or cash. A $35 fee will be charged for checks returned to Sun&Moon. If you fax in a credit card registration, please do not mail a copy — you may be charged twice. SINGLE CLASS/DROP-INS A drop-in is anyone taking a single class for which they have not registered as a full session. Those dropping in to an additional class during a session for which they have registered may pay the discounted full-session registration rate. Drop-ins are permitted only if space is available, so please call first. You may come to a class that is full, you will need to wait until class begins to see if you can take the place of a "no show" that day. Please inform the teacher that you are taking the class as a drop-in. REGISTER EARLY Registrations are taken on a first-come, first-served basis. Please register early to avoid disappointment. Sorry, we do not call to confirm registrations. However, we will call if the class you requested is full. FEES 75 and 90 minute classes: $15/class with session registration $18/class to drop-in

45 and 60 minute classes: $13/class with session registration $15/class to drop-in

MAKE-UPS We have a very liberal make-up policy. If you miss a class, you may make it up in any other yoga class within the current session at either studio. If you know you will miss classes in the future, you may make them up in advance of your absence. When you are doing a make-up, inform the teacher of the class that you are doing a make-up class and inform them of the class you are registered for. All make-ups must be taken during the session for which you are registered; they may not be carried over to the next session. Classes cancelled due to inclement weather may be made up during the session. Call the studio or visit our website to find out if your class has been cancelled. REFUND POLICY You must fill out a Refund Request form. The forms are available at the front desk. The date the written request is received rather than the last class attended is the criterion for determining refunds. • A $30 non-refundable administration fee is deducted from all tuitions. • After week one, all tuition less the $30 registration fee is refunded. • After week two, 75% of tuition less the $30 registration fee is refunded. • After week three, 50% of tuition less the $30 registration fee is refunded. • After week four, 25% of tuition less the $30 registration fee is refunded.

No refunds are given after the fifth class. Refunds are made by check and may take up to six weeks.

WHAT TO WEAR Comfortable clothes such as shorts, footless tights or leggings with a T-shirt or leotard. Please do not wear baggy sweats or pants (this inhibits the teacher’s ability to spot misalignments). Please remove shoes before entering the yoga rooms. We have men and women’s changing areas. No heavy perfume/cologne or noisy jewelry please. Please leave cell phone and valuables locked in your car. Sun&Moon Yoga Studio, Ltd. reserves the right to dismiss (with or without a refund) any student who disrupts the harmony of the class and/or studio environment.

Our Mission

Sun&Moon Yoga Studio is a place for people to experience and study

hatha yoga. We believe in a holistic approach to the study of yoga, giv-

ing our students a well-rounded yoga education, bringing in teachers with

an eclectic background of yoga. We believe in combining alignment techniques of the body with breath tech-

niques for calming and balancing the

mind and the belief and faith that our work feeds us and is fed by the (spirit) Divine Universal Energy present in us all and in all things.

Yoga for Good

•Each month a different charity. •Each month a different teacher. •Each month a chance to practice for yourself and others. Join us on the first Friday evening of each month (unless otherwise noted) as we practice an all-levels, donations only yoga class to promote awareness and raise funds for a good cause, selected by the teacher or by students in our Sun&Moon community. 100 percent of donations go directly to the evening's selected charity. Please spread the word about Yoga For Good. There's no need to register - just show up with your checkbook and your friends.

Is there a nonprofit close to your heart that you'd like to propose for Yoga for Good? If so, we want to hear from you! This could be a great chance to do good while having fun with your friends. It's also a great way to celebrate birthdays and anniversaries. We'll provide the teacher and studio space, and list your Yoga for Good event on our website along with a flyer that you can share with everyone you'd like to invite. Contact carol@sunandmoonstudio.com for more information.
