Try Metta by Amir

So what is Metta anyway? Metta comes from the Buddhist tradition of “loving-kindness.” It is the strong wish for the happiness and welfare of everyone. It’s about giving selflessly to others with openness, goodwill, compassion, fellowship, and non-violence. It’s an outlook of love different from the typical cordial type of love that’s based on self-interest. What distinguishes Metta is that it is not dependent on outer conditions — how you feel about someone does not depend on him or her. If you believe that how you feel depends on others, you are giving away the freedom to choose for yourself how you want to experience the world. Realize, loving-kindness is not about being nice or soft or submissive. It does not mean that you give in to everything or deny the way things are. Metta means being present with the way things truly are, while being caring, grounded, and truthful. Also notice that Metta is not affection; affection carries an element of attachment. With affection there’s something in it for you, whereas Metta is entirely selfless and unconditional. Why should I practice Metta? We all get angry at some point. However, there is a huge difference between accepting anger and letting it run its natural course versus holding on to it. Self-righteousness feeds anger and solidifies the feelings of ill will. You do have the right to indulge in sustained anger, just as you have the right to put your hand in a fire — but at some point you will realize that all you'll end up with is the pain of a burnt hand. Practicing Metta is also about expressing loving-kindness by bringing this selfless attitude into your daily life. It’s about getting this attitude to permeate everything you do. If you cultivate Metta, you will not be easily angered and can quickly subdue anger that arises — you will be more loving, more caring, and more likely to love unconditionally. How can I develop Metta in my life? The Buddhist approach to practicing Metta is fairly methodical but rewarding: Stage 1: Extend loving-kindness to yourself. The easiest step — it is said that before you can love anyone, you need to learn to love yourself. This doesn’t mean to be vain or selfish, but rather to create a sense of well-being that can be conveyed to others. Start by becoming aware of yourself and focus on feelings of peace, calm and acceptance. Let these grow into feelings of confidence and love within your heart. “May I be loved, may I be joyful, may all things go well for me.” Stage 2: Extend loving-kindness to a friend. Bring a friend to mind and reflect on their good qualities. Feel your connection with your friend, your liking for them, and encourage these to grow by repeating “may they be well; may they be happy.” You can use this technique in the next stages also. 2

Metta

continued

Stage 3: Extend loving-kindness to somebody neutral. Think of someone “neutral,” who you do not particularly like or dislike. Reflect on their humanity and include them in your feelings of Metta. Stage 4: Extend loving-kindness to an enemy. Think of someone you actually dislike or with whom you have conflict. Don’t get caught up in feelings of hatred; rather, think of them positively and send them Metta as well. OK, so this one is really hard — why would you send Metta to somebody that you are angry with? I remember watching a show one time where a woman had forgiven the murderer of her son. I thought, “How could she ever do that?” Then it dawned on me: once she forgave him, she was no longer burdened with living in her grief. This didn’t mean that she thought the murderer shouldn’t be locked up and justly punished. It simply meant that she no longer harbored malice toward him. So how can I develop Metta for an enemy? First, let's make a distinction between feelings and emotions. Feelings are sensations about something, while emotions are how we choose to respond to feelings. Being aware of the distinction allows us to become comfortable with unpleasant feelings without giving rise to ill-will. If ill-will does arise, become aware of it and choose to let it go. Finally: Extend your feelings further, to everyone around you, to everyone in your town, your country, and throughout the world. Send loving-kindness from your heart to everyone, to all beings everywhere. So why in the world do we need Metta? Metta is a practical necessity in our world, a world that is threatened by all kinds of hatred and destruction. Buddhists say “Hatred can never be stopped by hatred.” The current state of world affairs has created deep divides and intense feelings of distrust and blame. Getting caught up in loathing and misapprehension fuels the cycle even more. Loving-kindness is the only constructive means to bring peace, harmony and understanding. So try Metta.

Grasshopper by Annie

Of all the poses in all the variations of the sun salute series, this is the pose that seems to generate among beginning students the most questions, quizzical looks, grunts, groans, and — on a good day — falling down, or out of the pose, laughing. Admittedly, the pose can be awkward and confusing, yet ultimately simple and graceful, when performed with an engaged core and a brave spirit. The Core

We normally think of the deep abdominal muscles when we talk about engaging our core strength, which is important in preparing to lower into grasshopper. But equally important are the core muscles in between the scapula (also known as the shoulder blades), called the rhomboids. These are the muscles which become over-stretched and weak from sitting with hunched shoulders at our computers, in our cars, or as we watch our favorite t.v. show curled up on our favorite sofa. But when engaged, they are the muscles which allow us to “stand up straight” with broad shoulders and an open chest, and they are integral in any yoga pose in which we think our arms are supporting the weight of our bodies. It is actually the rhomboids which feed the arms, and in grasshopper, it is the rhomboids which support the bulk of the pose.

The Preparation

Warm up with some cat/cow movements of the pelvis. Coordinate the breath so that you inhale the full length of the movement into cow, and exhale the full length of movement into cat. Now come back to a neutral table pose. Walk the hands forward about a palm’s length (not including the fingers), and then glide the torso forward so that your shoulders are once again directly above the wrists, but the hips are slightly forward of the knees. Re-assume the cow tilt/hammock-back position. This is an optimal set-up for the sitting bones, which need to remain lifted for the entire pose. 4

The Dive

With what sometimes feels like a dive (as opposed to a leap) of faith, lower the chest and chin to the floor, while simultaneously bending the arms as the elbows track straight back, hugged in next to the torso. So while the chest and chin are dropped to the floor, the elbows and sitting bones reach up toward the ceiling. This is the grasshopper, poised for its next leap along the earth.

The Transition

The sun salute calls for a transition from grasshopper into cobra, which can be almost as challenging as coming into grasshopper in the first place. The key is threefold: one, to keep the core engaged, both in the belly and the rhomboids; two, to maintain grounding channels through the legs by tucking the toes, pushing the heels back, and pushing the sitting bones back as you straighten the legs back along the floor and drop the pelvis to the floor; and three, allow the backward grounding to create an equal and opposite forward lifting through the heart as you open up into cobra. The hands stay right where they’ve been all along, fingers spread wide and outer edges of the palms pressing firmly into the mat. Remember, the pose is named for an insect. We can appreciate grasshopper pose for its intricacy, beauty, and its place in the sun salute, as long as we don’t land on our face; likewise, we can appreciate many insects for their intricate beauty and place in nature, as long as they don't land on our dinner.

Teacher Feature – Fall 2006 Meet Suzanne Morgan

Describe your path into yoga. My first experience with yoga was so beautiful. When I was nine, I went to the library and discovered a children’s picture book on yoga. I was in a strict Catholic school and remember hiding the book, because somehow I thought that the nuns would disapprove. The book had fun illustrations and instructions on how to do asanas with animal names such as turtle pose, cat pose, dog pose, etc. — and it even had fun instructions for pranayama. I remember joyfully doing the asana and pranayama practice every day for two weeks. It was such a pure way to experience yoga for the first time, just working at it on my own and starting to feel the connection with my body. Later I studied to be a professional ballet dancer. Ballet was my first love, but didn’t offer the intellectual stimulation I needed. About eight years ago, I was intrigued by the idea of taking yoga. I thought it might be exotic and challenging — and it is! What do you enjoy about teaching? What do you like to teach? I took Sun and Moon’s 300 hour teacher training program, not because I wanted to teach, but because I wanted to learn more about this amazing practice and the philosophy behind it. After being coaxed into teaching, I discovered that I loved it. I felt better and more authentic after walking out of teaching a class then when I walked in. While my classes are very challenging, I often tell my students to allow themselves to be a “C” student instead of an “A” student and to allow themselves to be the “worst” student in the class. There is so much striving and competition in this world. While that's sometimes appropriate, the stress of continually striving and achieving tears people up. I try to teach selfacceptance and joy in change. In every class, I incorporate asanas, pranayama and meditation. I’m really intrigued with energy work. I love the energy that comes from connecting the poses, so my style has a bit more flow or vinyasa than static poses.

How has yoga helped you personally? To say that yoga has healed me in many ways is not an overstatement. I have scoliosis and have found great relief from the constant low grade pain that I felt before. The apex of the abnormal curve in my spine is at my adrenal glands, so I struggle with adrenal fatigue, hypoglycemia, imbalances in my hormones, etc. Yoga has directly helped me with these issues. While those physical issues may never be cured, the healing that I’ve experienced is almost indescribable. More importantly, through practicing self-acceptance and being in the moment (the work for me continues here), I’ve experienced greater love and happiness in my life. What else are you passionate about? I love to learn. My mother is a good model for me in that respect. She’s 83 and continues to become more open and educated each year. I'm a voracious reader. I’m a huge animal lover — and share my home with my three children: Simone (a rescue kitty), Elliot (a pure bred ocicat), and our newest family member is Olivia (a Whippet puppy). I own a few small businesses — a dot com and an association, but my newest venture is the one I’m most passionate about. I went to Thailand a few months ago to study the Clouded Leopards, one of the most endangered of the cat species. When I returned, I started a foundation called Save the Clouded Leopards. I’m thrilled to be able to help raise the awareness of these magnificent, gorgeous, endangered animals. Just like teaching yoga, I feel that I am so rewarded by giving back — without the expectation of something in return. Food for the soul.

Registration Information To register, please read all of our policy information before filling out the registration form on the following page. If you have any questions, please call the studio at (703) 525-9642. We accept beginners or new students at any time throughout the session as long as space is available in your class choice. If you are joining the session late, your tuition will be prorated based on the chart below.

Students new to our studio receive their first class free by presenting the free class coupon provided in this newsletter.

We accept Visa, Mastercard, Discover, checks or cash. We do not accept registrations by phone. A $20 fee will be charged for checks returned to Sun & Moon. If you fax in a credit card registration, please do not mail a copy — you may be charged twice. Sorry, we do not call to confirm registrations. However, we will call if the class you requested is full.

Make-ups If you miss a class, you may make it up in any other yoga class within the current session. Classes cancelled due to inclement weather may be made up during the session. Call the studio or visit our website to find out if your class has been cancelled. (For your safety, when making up classes we ask that you stay at the same or lower level yoga class.) You do not need to call ahead to do a make-up; however, you should tell teachers that you are taking their class as a make-up for your regular class. Make-ups may also be done at the Health Advantage Yoga Center, Willow Street Yoga Center or Boundless Yoga Studio under our reciprocity agreement and at any of the three Sun & Moon Studios. Drop-ins A Drop-in is a student not currently registered, wishing to take a single class or a current student wishing to take an additional class. Drop-ins are permitted only if space is available, so please call first. You may come to a class that is full, but you will need to wait until class begins to see if you can take the place of a “no show” that day. Drop-in fees are under Fees on this page. Please inform the teacher that you are taking the class as a drop-in.

Refund Policy You must fill out a Refund Request form. The forms are available at the front desk. The date the written request is received rather than the last class attended is the criterion for determining refunds. • A $30 non-refundable administration fee is deducted from all tuitions. • After week one, all tuition less the $30 registration fee is refunded. • After week two, 75% of tuition less the $30 registration fee is refunded. • After week 3, 50% of tuition less the $30 registration fee is refunded. • After week 4, 25% of tuition less the $30 registration fee is refunded. No refunds are given after the fifth class. Refunds are made by check and may take up to six weeks. Class size/location Minimum number of students for a class is 8. Classroom location may change depending on enrollment.

What to wear Comfortable clothes such as shorts, footless tights or leggings with a T-shirt or leotard. Please do not wear baggy sweats or pants (this inhibits the teacher’s ability to spot misalignments). Please remove shoes before entering the yoga rooms. We have men and women’s changing areas. No heavy perfume/cologne or noisy jewelry please. Please leave cell phone and valuables locked in your car. Sun & Moon Yoga Studio, Ltd. reserves the right to dismiss (with or without a refund) any student who disrupts the harmony of the class and/or studio environment.
