Be Happy Now by Amir
The other day I overheard somebody say, “I’ll be happy when I get that job.” For some reason it stuck in my mind and I started to realize that we tend to go through life putting conditions on our happiness. We say things like, “I’ll be happy when I finish school,” “I’ll be happy when I turn 21,” “I’ll be happy when I get married,” or, “I’ll be happy when I retire.” I’ve always been bewildered about how we all set these conditions up in a way to keep happiness just beyond our reach. I know personally how easy it is get caught up in this pattern of thinking.
Why would we put conditions on our own happiness? This means that we cannot be happy until our situation changes and our goals are achieved. Many people think this way, but the mistake is that even if the conditions are reached we end up immediately setting new ones. This is why so many people are never happy. Even more, it’s very common that when we do change our situation, we can’t maintain happiness because we become consumed with trying to maintain what we’ve achieved. We end up creating this never-ending cycle, making happiness constantly elusive.
One of the secrets to overcoming this is to differentiate between attachment and our determination toward achieving a goal. If we become “attached” to achieving the goal, our happiness becomes dependent upon achieving that goal. We should remain determined to achieve our goals, however, if we are not attached, happiness is no longer held hostage. So try this. Contemplate the “things” you think would “make” you happy (these are natural impulses — we all have them — so don't be too judgmental on yourself). Review your list and consider the extent to which each item may limit your happiness by preventing you from being in the present moment. Instead, choose to be happy and content at this very moment. Take comfort in knowing that your current condition is virtually guaranteed to change, and it does not control your future.
To be blunt, happiness is not always going to “find” us — we have to pursue it on our own. There will always be people and circumstances that will make us feel robbed of our pursuit — but it’s up to us to make sure happiness does not elude us. Consider the words of Thich Nhat Hanh (from The Miracle of Mindfulness): “If while washing dishes, we think only of the cup of tea that awaits us... we are not alive during the time we are washing the dishes... we will only be thinking of other things, barely aware of the cup in our hands. Thus, we are sucked away into the future, incapable of actually living one minute of life.”

Healing Center at Sun and Moon
As our yoga community continues to grow over the years we find that we want to expand our vision of the health and healing we already bring to you through yoga. It seems appropriate to offer more ways to compliment your yoga practice and your search for healthy and healing experiences. We envision a healing center within Sun and Moon that will make bodywork and other healing modalities available to you in the familiar and soothing surroundings of our studio. I hope you will embrace the new changes and take advantage of the various practitioners that will be joining us.
Healing Practitioners Make New Home at Fairfax Studio
Kathleen “Kat” Burnett will be moving her Rolfing® Structural Integration practice to the Fairfax Studio in early December. Rolfing is a process that aims to bring the body into better balance and alignment through systematic (hands on) manipulation of soft (connective) tissue, client education and participation. The overall goal is to improve posture and movement, and increase body awareness. Rolfers believe that when the body is aligned properly with gravity, the body is better able to heal itself. In addition to improved posture and movement, many clients notice an increase in energy, and relief from many chronic aches and pains. Rolfing and yoga complement each other by improving structure, balance and flexibility.
Kat has been a Certified Rolfer since 2001, completed Advanced Rolfing Training in 2005, and has been Nationally Certified in Therapeutic Massage and Bodywork (NCTMB) since 1999. For more information, she can be contacted at: Kat_Burnett@verizon.net or 703-863-7653.
Netta Pope Riley has moved her Massage Therapy practice back into the Fairfax studio over the past few months and is busily accepting new clients. Netta is a 1991 graduate of the Potomac Massage Therapy Institute in Washington, D.C. She has been Nationally Certified in Therapeutic Massage and Bodywork (NCTMB) since 1994 and earned an additional certification in pregnancy massage in 1999. She is also a fifteen-year member of the American Massage Therapy Association. Netta enjoys working with a wide range of clients — from those needing stress relief to those with specific
issues to resolve. Massage can work wonders with headaches, chronic pain, repetitive stress injuries and rehabilitation from illness and surgery. It is also a must for the overworked and overstressed; whether due to the workplace or home and family issues. As often in the practice of yoga, massage can be one way that clients may re-establish an inner connectedness, or a sense of balance in their bodies, their lives or themselves.
Netta can be reached at NetRiley@hotmail.com or at 703-989-2059. If you are in the Fairfax studio please pick up an informational brochure.

Sirsasana II: The Tripod Headstand by Annie
Setting Up The first step is to do a series of hip openers, because the preparation stage of the pose requires fairly deep flexion of the hips. I like lunges, a few standing poses with bent knees, such as warrior 2 and side angle pose, and hip openers from the back, such as reclined lunges and happy baby pose.
Next, come into table pose, and place the head on the floor towards the front of the mat, in front of the hands, so that the head and each hand form three corners of an equilateral triangle. The arms should be bent at a 90-degree angle, with the elbows directly above the wrists. Spread the fingers wide, and press the edges of the palms firmly into the mat. Keep the elbows shoulder width apart. As you lift the knees, raise the sitting bones high and walk forward until you are able to place the knees on top of the elbows.
My first yoga teacher was a friend in my neighborhood who had recently moved to Washington, DC, and was looking for practice partners. Since it was long before yoga came into the mainstream, and yoga studios were scarce in our city, she taught a group of us weekly in her apartment. We had no mats at first, very few props, and no money was exchanged. As a result, she taught casually and unconventionally, which is why I learned to do headstand very early on in my yoga studies, and why I learned to do the less commonly taught and practiced “tripod variation first. 4
Find Your Core The engagement of the belly (drawing the belly towards the spine) powers the movement of the knees up and off of the elbows as the legs straighten skyward. Engaging the abdominal core helps to extend the tail bone away from the waist, which helps to extend grounding energy through the legs and out through the feet. The grounding energy in inversions is headed away from the actual ground, but it is still critical, because it helps to extend the body up and out of itself and the floor. I like to imagine that my legs are growing upward to the extent that I could press my feet firmly enough into the ceiling to actually raise the roof.
Finding Balance I highly recommend trying headstand, especially this version of headstand, away from the wall. Coming up with both legs at once allows a much slower and much more controlled movement into the pose. The wall makes it tempting to "kickbox" our way up, which bypasses the core strength that informs and allows our balance. Drawing the belly towards the spine not only provides a grounding current of energy through the tail and legs, but it also fills out the back body
Sirsasana II: The Tripod Headstand continued
and creates circumferential space in the rib cage for deep, empowering, breaths. Put together, we are balanced.
Address the Fear Afraid of toppling over without the wall as a safety net? Try a somersault: Make sure there are no people or furniture or sharp objects in front of our headstand space. Put a thin layer of blanket in front of you, come up into your headstand, and deliberately tuck your chin and fall into a forward roll, just like we all did as children. As soon as we experience falling over, we realize that if it begins to happen, the best thing to do is to go ahead and let it happen, and we'll be fine. If your low back is healthy and backbends don't bother you, you can also experiment with bending the knees and falling over into a backbend with the feet on the floor.
Protecting the Neck An important caution about headstand: It is contraindicated for anyone with a cervical spine injury or chronic pain in the neck. This variation can be especially hard on an already troubled neck because it puts more pressure on the neck and whole spine than the standard variation, in which we have both forearms making a broader base through which to disperse the weight of the pose.
However, we can work within the pose to alleviate some of that pressure by remembering one basic instruction: move the shoulder blades away from the ears. It's the same movement that we do standing up so that we don't hunch up the shoulders and scrunch down the neck. What works right side up works upside down. Keeping the neck long and spacious in between the vertebrae avoids compression, regardless of which way is up.
The Other Headstand My own personal headstand story continues with this: Six years after practicing the tripod way, I did the pose in a challenging class with a nationally prominent teacher who told me to come down and learn it the other way. I was stymied and confused, and felt I'd been demoted. He explained that becoming too reliant on a variation of the pose that is harder on the spine would not benefit me in the end. His point was, if you can only do it one way, you can't really do it. So I became a beginner again, and learned to come up with my forearms on the floor, fingers interlaced, cupping the back of my head with my palms. It was a valuable lesson in mental flexibility, and in what turns acrobatics into yoga: it's what happens on the inside, at the center of the body (and the mind), without dependence on or attachment to the shape or movement of the outer edges.

Class Descriptions, Resources and Staff
Ashtanga: Synchronizes a set sequence of yoga postures, yogic breathing and the practice of mula and uddiyana bandhas (energy locks) to produce an internal heat. The poses are done in rapid succession, making this a flowing and vigorous workout. This class is not recommended for beginners.
Baby and Me: A special class, which supports the transition into motherhood. Using certain asana moms counter common physical issues created during infant care. Yoga helps to create a steady and relaxed feeling in the new role of motherhood. Interactive massage combined with developmental movement strengthens the mother/infant bond while facilitating infant motor development. Deepening Your Practice: Each class explores a specific topic related to a yoga pose, body part, philosophy or whatever comes to mind. The class emphasizes the significance of the topic and how it integrates physically and psychologically into our being. This class is practical for all levels; however, the student must complete one full session of Level 1 at SMYS before taking this class. Level 1: Learn the fundamentals and relax. This class can be joined at any time during the session. Level 2: Refine the basics and gain more awareness of the body through more advanced breath work.
*Level 3: Progress to advanced standing and seated poses and begin integrating inversions.
*Level 4: Intensify your strong asana practice by developing a deeper internal understanding of yoga. This class practices complicated asanas such as inversions, lotus, and deep backbends and students are expected to have a home practice.
All Levels: Appropriate for all students, this class introduces the basics and challenges more advanced students. Level 5: The focus of this class is on meditation and philosophy for teachers and teacher trainees.
Combination Classes: For the student who doesn’t quite feel ready to move on to the next level, but is trying to ease forward slowly, combination classes (i.e. Level 1-2) provide the avenue to do so. Gentle: Introductory poses at a slow pace. This class is ideal for beginning students and students with health concerns.
Integral Yoga: A holistic approach to yoga that incorporates a complete hatha routine combined with a deep relaxation, pranayama, chanting and a short meditation. A stress reducing, more inward approach to yoga. Appropriate for all levels. Kids Yoga: A fun class for children to begin playing with yoga.
Meditation Group: A general survey and practice of various meditation philosophies and
practices. Open to beginners and advanced students alike. No registration necessary.
Parent/Child: Practice yoga with your children ages 5-12 and have fun learning yoga together. This light-hearted class is designed to be playful and to help build motor coordination, balance and strength. Yoga practice also helps children to reduce stress in their lives.
Pilates 1: This exercise system focuses on correct breathing, posture and core strengthening. No admittance after week three without permission of the instructor.
Pilates 2: The progression in this class is faster than in Pilates 1 and provides an energetic, full body workout. Prior Pilates experience necessary.
Power Yoga is a class that builds strength and increases endurance and flexibility. It follows the tradition of vinyasa flow, linking the breath with the poses. Power yoga 1 is designed for students who have completed a level 2 yoga class. Power yoga 2 is designed for students who want to challenge themselves and intensify their yoga practice through the vinyasa flow.
Teens Yoga: For the adolescent yogi we offer teens class (age 12-18) focusing on a playful, yet disciplined practice of asana, pranayama and relaxation. Yoga can help stressed out young people to increase focus, self-esteem and personal awareness. *Vinyasa 1: A challenging practice that builds stamina and strength through a fasterpaced flow. Students must have some yoga experience.
*Vinyasa 2: Adding more advanced poses to the fast pace of Vinyasa 1, this class is open to level 2+ students ready to test their focus and core strength.

Registration Information
REGISTRATION INFORMATION To register, please read all of our policy information before filling out the registration form on the following page. If you have any questions, please call the studio at (703) 525YOGA (9642). We accept beginners or new students at any time throughout the session as long as space is available in your class choice. If you are joining the session late, partial session registration is available (see below). Drop-in and single class registration is available at our normal single class rate. Local students that are considering registering for classes may take a trial class without charge to determine if Sun and Moon is the right studio for them (ask our staff for terms and information). We accept Visa, Mastercard, Discover, checks or cash.
We do not accept registrations by phone. A $20 fee will be charged for checks returned to Sun & Moon. If you fax in a credit card registration, please do not mail a copy — you may be charged twice. Sorry, we do not call to confirm registrations. However, we will call if the class you requested is full.
FEES Full Session Registration Sun and Moon classes are offered weekly on a seasonal session basis (usually 14 weeks, fewer in summer). We are a school of yoga with our classes structured to provide a wellrounded curriculum over an entire session. Prices for a Full Session Registration represent a discount off our regular Single Class rate and are listed on our class schedule.
Single Class/Drop-ins Sun and Moon allows students who are not registered in a Full Session to attend classes on a Single Class/Drop-in basis. The following are our Single Class Rates: • Classes 1 hour or less: $15 • Classes over 1 hour: $18
Partial Registration For students that start mid-session or can not attend a full session, we offer students the option to register for a Partial Session. The single class rate applies if the number of classes is less than six. The following Partial Registration rates apply if the student registers for 6 or more classes: • 45 minutes = $12 • 1 hour = $14 • 1 hour 15 min = $15 • 1 hour 30 min = $16 • 2 hours = $20 Arlington students send payment and registration to: 3811 Lee Highway, Arlington VA 22207 Fax: 703-525-5524 Fairfax City students send payment and registration to: 9998 Main Street, Fairfax, VA 22031 Fax: 703-934-9481
Rappahannock students send payment and registration to: P.O. Box 348, Sperryville, VA 22740 Fax: 703-934-9481 REGISTER EARLY Registrations are taken on a first-come, first-served basis. Please register early to avoid disappointment. 10
MAKE-UPS If you miss a class, you may make it up in any other yoga class within the current session. Classes cancelled due to inclement weather may be made up during the session. Call the studio or visit our website to find out if your class has been cancelled. (For your safety, when making up classes we ask that you stay at the same or lower level yoga class.) You do not need to call ahead to do a make-up; however, you should tell teachers that you are taking their class as a make-up for your regular class. Make-ups may also be done at the Health Advantage Yoga Center or Boundless Yoga Studio under our reciprocity agreement and at any of the three Sun & Moon Studios. DROP-INS A Drop-in is a student not currently registered, wishing to take a single class or a current student wishing to take an additional class. Drop-ins are permitted only if space is available, so please call first. You may come to a class that is full, but you will need to wait until class begins to see if you can take the place of a “no show” that day. Drop-in fees are under Fees on this page. Please inform the teacher that you are taking the class as a drop-in.
REFUND POLICY You must fill out a Refund Request form. The forms are available at the front desk. The date the written request is received rather than the last class attended is the criterion for determining refunds. • A $30 non-refundable administration fee is deducted from all tuitions. • After week one, all tuition less the $30 registration fee is refunded. • After week two, 75% of tuition less the $30 registration fee is refunded. • After week 3, 50% of tuition less the $30 registration fee is refunded. • After week 4, 25% of tuition less the $30 registration fee is refunded. No refunds are given after the fifth class. Refunds are made by check and may take up to six weeks. CLASS SIZE/LOCATION Minimum number of students for a class is 8. Classroom location may change depending on enrollment.
What to wear Comfortable clothes such as shorts, footless tights or leggings with a T-shirt or leotard. Please do not wear baggy sweats or pants (this inhibits the teacher’s ability to spot misalignments). Please remove shoes before entering the yoga rooms. We have men and women’s changing areas. No heavy perfume/cologne or noisy jewelry please. Please leave cell phone and valuables locked in your car. Sun & Moon Yoga Studio, Ltd. reserves the right to dismiss (with or without a refund) any student who disrupts the harmony of the class and/or studio environment.

DISCOUNT POLICY Discounts are available on Full Session Registration only. We offer a 10% discount to those who believe they need it (seniors on reduced/fixed income, students, teachers, multiple family members taking yoga classes and students taking more than one class). Sun and Moon also has a Work Exchange Program for students who wish to trade work for yoga classes. Sun and Moon does not want anybody to not take yoga because of money — if for some reason the Work Exchange Program does not work for you, please pick up a financial aid form at the office and we would be happy to help.
