Learning from Pain by Amir
There’s a line from the movie “The Princess Bride” that goes like this: “Life is pain, Highness. Anyone who says differently is selling something.” So if this line were true, would it be a bad thing? Biologically speaking, the reason we have pain at all, is because it is a developed aversion, both real (physical) and imagined (psychological) to things which do us harm and could kill us. So there is a reason for pain, but what can we learn from it?
A student recently reminded me that when they were doing a particular yoga pose and said, “It hurts,” I responded, “that’s where the learning happens.” When I said that, I specifically meant it in terms of asana. If performing a pose creates pain, don’t just shy away from the pain, but explore factors around it. Ask what seems to cause it, and what makes it feel better. Can you do the pose in a healing manner? However, this isn’t just restricted to asana. In every activity there is a lesson that can be learned from pain. By nature, pain influences our actions — all creatures tend to avoid painful situations. But since painful situations inevitably arise, not learning from the resulting pain closes us off from a whole world of experience and healing. Take the example of a child leaving home for his first day of school. It hurts for the child because it’s scary, but the child goes through the pain and takes his first important steps toward independence. It hurts for the parent because it’s a feeling of loss, but the parent goes through the pain and learns about acceptance and letting go. Not to say this is easy — turning a painful circumstance on its head and giving it a positive spin is not possible unless we have grieved and no longer need to indulge in negative and draining emotions. It happens when you start to realize, in the painful aftermath, that there is room to grow.
We humans don’t have much patience for bad news. Our instinct is to basically plunge ahead (as the British say, “get on with it.”). And in general, “getting on with it” is good. But we shouldn’t go forward without learning the lesson from the pain. Without pain, we are unable to enjoy the small pleasures of life, ones that otherwise appear insignificant. Pain and crisis can be a power and a remedy — there is a lesson to be learned from it all. 2
Supta Padangusthasana (Reclining Leg Stretch) by Annie Moyer
There is a point in every pose at which the ego wants to take over and dictate that we must go as far, high, or deep as possible. When this happens, it’s a good time to remember why we’re doing the pose. Supta padangusthasana (commonly known as reclining hand to big toe pose), feels really good on the back of the lifted thigh and calf. There is no other back-of-the-leg stretch quite like it. Secondly, it’s a relaxed opening for the upper chest and shoulders if we position the arms correctly. Third, it’s a great therapy for the lumbar spine. Keep these points in mind as you lie down with your legs straight out on the floor. Tilt your hips toward the ceiling until you feel your low back rising away from the floor, and your back thighs dropping to touch down. This takes your pelvis into a neutral position, and helps to situate the heads of the femur bones deep in your hip socket. In this position, your body becomes grounded and properly aligned. Take a strap and wrap it around the ball of your right foot, and begin to straighten and lift the right leg up, while keeping the left leg grounded. Here is where we meet the ego, and where we must not let it prevail by telling us to lift the leg too high. If that happens, the lower thigh will rise up away from the floor, the pelvis will move into a tucked position — out of its proper neutral alignment. The lesson here is to only lift and straighten your right leg as high as your neutral pelvis and grounded left thigh will allow. Keeping both feet flexed helps straighten and activate your legs, and at the same time, the
thigh muscles are engaged and the legs remain cozily situated into the pelvis. Applying the same principle to the upper limbs as the lower limbs, position your hands on the strap so that your arms are straight and your shoulders are pressing gently back into the floor, situating the arms cozily into your shoulder sockets. This helps to broaden the collar bones and expand the upper chest, making space for long deep breaths to enter, nourish, and exit the body. As always, repeat the pose on the other side.
If you give in to your ego’s desire and force the lifted leg as high as possible, you end up with the equivalent of standing on one foot, hunched over, rounding the spine in order to reach down and scratch your foot. It might feel good for a moment, but soon after, it’ll make your back hurt. The best way to practice this pose is the same best way to practice all poses, or anything else in life: move gently and purposefully, remaining grounded and aligned, listening to the inner cues of our own breath and body. 3

section to help me feel better. Over a period of years, I grew to like practicing yoga. Later, yoga started to become more popular, and my husband noticed that Burke Swim and Racquet Club—we lived in Burke at the time—was offering a yoga class. So, we enrolled in the class and enjoyed taking it together.
What did you like about taking a class? It gave me the chance to set aside time to practice yoga regularly. During class, I enjoyed what I was doing and surrendered to the moment. I also liked the great variety in one class: stretching, doing sun salutes, practicing deep-breathing exercises, and then relaxing. Back then, I had a desk job and my neck and shoulders bothered me from sitting at the computer, but they felt better after yoga class. I liked taking yoga so much I signed up for a class at Health Advantage Yoga Studio and later took classes at Sun and Moon. After taking yoga classes for a while, I noticed yoga was enriching my life outside the classroom in unexpected ways. What do you like most about yoga? I like the way it feels to practice yoga: It renews my body and awakens my spirit. Also, I like my yoga teachers, friends, and students. They are sensitive, kind, and fun.
When did you first start practicing yoga? I started practicing yoga after I finished college and started working. When I was in college, I bought a Rodale Press book called The Practical Encyclopedia to Natural Healing at a sidewalk sale. Over the years the book helped me manage a variety of ailments, including dry skin, the hiccups, and canker sores. Luckily, it also has a section on yoga therapy. So, some of the times when I encountered a health problem, I followed one of the sequences listed in the yoga
4
What unexpected ways? I started to become connected to the yoga community: I enjoyed talking to and making friends with people interested in spirituality and holistic health. While I was practicing yoga, I was able to get grounded. As a result, in everyday life I began feeling more grounded. Also, as I became more confident in yoga class, I became more confident and more comfortable being myself off the mat. My success with yoga encouraged me to experiment with other healing modalities, including homeopathy, ayurvedic herbs, different types of bodywork and energy work, and more recently biological dentistry, network spinal analysis, and quantum touch. My son, Teddy, now five years old, is a product of my healing work: my husband and I were married for nineteen years before I had Teddy
because for many years I was infertile. I feel grateful for the changes in my life and that I am able to continue to learn and take yoga classes, and I give thanks to my past and present teachers, healers, and students for their support.
How does your life experience affect your teaching style? Because much of my own healing work involves getting into my body and out of my head, I like to remind my students of simple ways to get grounded during the day. Similarly, during class I tend to give postural reminders to encourage students to think about different aspects of a pose instead of allowing their thoughts to wander. To provide opportunities for support, personal growth, and healing, I aim to build a sense of community in the classroom. Lastly, I like to talk about benefits of specific asana, breathing, meditation, and chanting practices to develop awareness of mind-body-spirit connections.
Do you have tips for students who become frustrated with their spiritual journey? I have a few thoughts on the matter. In general, any healing art brings subtle changes over time, so one has to be patient with the journey and learn to take what comes by enjoying the journey as an entire experience. As a yogini’s mind, body, and spirit unify, she will notice her life gradually changing, perhaps not in ways she may have originally anticipated, but in ways that align with her own true nature—she will notice herself becoming more authentic and whole as a human being. The yogi or yogini will naturally enjoy the wonderful process of spiritual transformation that comes with practicing yoga. But at the same time, when one practices yoga, one tends to become more sensitive and therefore more aware of one’s behavior. I think that heightened aware-
ness can cause one to be overly critical of oneself; not to mention that with all the stresses of modern-day life, we all need to be extra-patient and compassionate with ourselves. To counter a tendency toward self-criticalness, it helps me to notice, appreciate, and even dwell upon examples of positive behavior changes in my life and how pleased I am with the results of my new behaviors. Because we are here on Earth to learn, every individual encounters obstacles along his or her spiritual path. When one can accept or, better yet, embrace the obstacles as opportunities for learning and growth, great healing can occur. When encountering obstacles, I believe it helps to ask for assistance from the Universe because the Universe is generally a benign and friendly force that supports us in what we believe and choose to focus on. It helps to ask for assistance when one feels close to the Source, such as during a meditation session, as well as to stay positive and present in one’s body when asking.
I have practiced meditating to set an intention with my life coach and also in the class I take with Alex Levin. Such a meditation can unfold as follows: Begin by relaxing and getting centered through following the breath; then express appreciation for some of the abundance already in your life. Next, set an intention that aligns with your core beliefs or that is true to you: a sample intention could be finding more inner peace in your life in general or in a certain situation. After you form your intention and clarify it, visualize your intention as a reality and notice how it feels in your body for the intention to happen. After you finish meditating on your intention, resist the temptation to ask the Universe, or in any way control, why or how your intention will occur: just let go and allow the Universe to take care of the details.

Ashtanga: Synchronizes a set sequence of yoga postures, yogic breathing and the practice of mula and uddiyana bandhas (energy locks) to produce an internal heat. The poses are done in rapid succession, making this a flowing and vigorous workout. This class is not recommended for beginners.
Baby and Me: A special class, which supports the transition into motherhood. Using certain asana moms counter common physical issues created during infant care. Yoga helps to create a steady and relaxed feeling in the new role of motherhood. Interactive massage combined with developmental movement strengthens the mother/infant bond while facilitating infant motor development. Deepening Your Practice: Each class explores a specific topic related to a yoga pose, body part, philosophy or whatever comes to mind. The class emphasizes the significance of the topic and how it integrates physically and psychologically into our being. This class is practical for all levels; however, the student must complete one full session of Level 1 at SMYS before taking this class. Level 1: Learn the fundamentals and relax. This class can be joined at any time during the session. Level 2: Refine the basics and gain more awareness of the body through more advanced breath work.
*Level 3: Progress to advanced standing and seated poses and begin integrating inversions.

All Levels: Appropriate for all students, this class introduces the basics and challenges more advanced students.
Level 5: The focus of this class is on meditation and philosophy for teachers and teacher trainees.
Combination Classes: For the student who doesn’t quite feel ready to move on to the next level, but is trying to ease forward slowly, combination classes (i.e. Level 1-2) provide the avenue to do so. Gentle: Introductory poses at a slow pace. This class is ideal for beginning students and students with health concerns.
Integral Yoga: A holistic approach to yoga that incorporates a complete hatha routine combined with a deep relaxation, pranayama, chanting and a short meditation. A stress reducing, more inward approach to yoga. Appropriate for all levels.

Registration Information
REGISTRATION INFORMATION To register, please read all of our policy information before filling out the registration form on the following page. If you have any questions, please call the studio at (703) 525YOGA (9642). We accept beginners or new students at any time throughout the session as long as space is available in your class choice. If you are joining the session late, partial session registration is available (see below). Drop-in and single class registration is available at our normal single class rate. Local students that are considering registering for classes may take a trial class without charge to determine if Sun and Moon is the right studio for them (ask our staff for terms and information). We accept Visa, Mastercard, Discover, checks or cash.
We do not accept registrations by phone. A $20 fee will be charged for checks returned to Sun & Moon. If you fax in a credit card registration, please do not mail a copy — you may be charged twice. Sorry, we do not call to confirm registrations. However, we will call if the class you requested is full.
FEES Full Session Registration Sun and Moon classes are offered weekly on a seasonal session basis (usually 14 weeks, fewer in summer). We are a school of yoga with our classes structured to provide a wellrounded curriculum over an entire session. Prices for a Full Session Registration represent a discount off our regular Single Class rate and are listed on our class schedule.
Single Class/Drop-ins Sun and Moon allows students who are not registered in a Full Session to attend classes on a Single Class/Drop-in basis. The following are our Single Class Rates: • Classes 1 hour or less: $15 • Classes over 1 hour: $18
Partial Registration For students that start mid-session or can not attend a full session, we offer students the option to register for a Partial Session. The single class rate applies if the number of classes is less than six. The following Partial Registration rates apply if the student registers for 6 or more classes: • 45 minutes = $12 • 1 hour = $14 • 1 hour 15 min = $15 • 1 hour 30 min = $16 • 2 hours = $20 Arlington students send payment and registration to: 3811 Lee Highway, Arlington VA 22207 Fax: 703-525-5524 Fairfax City students send payment and registration to: 9998 Main Street, Fairfax, VA 22031 Fax: 703-934-9481

REGISTER EARLY Registrations are taken on a first-come, first-served basis. Please register early to avoid disappointment.
MAKE-UPS If you miss a class, you may make it up in any other yoga class within the current session. Classes cancelled due to inclement weather may be made up during the session. Call the studio or visit our website to find out if your class has been cancelled. (For your safety, when making up classes we ask that you stay at the same or lower level yoga class.) You do not need to call ahead to do a make-up; however, you should tell teachers that you are taking their class as a make-up for your regular class. Make-ups may also be done at the Health Advantage Yoga Center or Boundless Yoga Studio under our reciprocity agreement and at any of the three Sun & Moon Studios. DROP-INS A Drop-in is a student not currently registered, wishing to take a single class or a current student wishing to take an additional class. Drop-ins are permitted only if space is available, so please call first. You may come to a class that is full, but you will need to wait until class begins to see if you can take the place of a “no show” that day. Drop-in fees are under Fees on this page. Please inform the teacher that you are taking the class as a drop-in.
REFUND POLICY You must fill out a Refund Request form. The forms are available at the front desk. The date the written request is received rather than the last class attended is the criterion for determining refunds. • A $30 non-refundable administration fee is deducted from all tuitions. • After week one, all tuition less the $30 registration fee is refunded. • After week two, 75% of tuition less the $30 registration fee is refunded. • After week 3, 50% of tuition less the $30 registration fee is refunded. • After week 4, 25% of tuition less the $30 registration fee is refunded. No refunds are given after the fifth class. Refunds are made by check and may take up to six weeks.
What to wear Comfortable clothes such as shorts, footless tights or leggings with a T-shirt or leotard. Please do not wear baggy sweats or pants (this inhibits the teacher’s ability to spot misalignments). Please remove shoes before entering the yoga rooms. We have men and women’s changing areas. No heavy perfume/cologne or noisy jewelry please. Please leave cell phone and valuables locked in your car. Sun & Moon Yoga Studio, Ltd. reserves the right to dismiss (with or without a refund) any student who disrupts the harmony of the class and/or studio environment.
