Sherazhad by Amir
A few weeks ago, my beautiful Persian cat, Sherazhad, died. She was 21 years old, and I was very lucky to have her unconditional love for my entire adult life. As I watched her health decline over the last year, I had been preparing for dealing with her loss. Full of what I thought was grief, I took her to the vet and I began to miss her even before she was gone. I was expecting an overwhelming anguish to envelop me for days and weeks to come — but it never did. As a result, I inadvertently learned the difference between “mourning” and “grief” — between what I could recognize in my heart and what I could control in my mind. Though I was sad, I was curious about the lack of overwhelming grief and anguish. So I looked up “grief” in the dictionary. It is defined as “keen mental suffering or distress over affliction or loss; sharp sorrow; painful regret”. The key words that stuck out at me were “regret” and “suffering”. I didn’t feel regret, because Sherazhad had a very good, long, loving life. She was old and there was nothing anybody could have done to save her. I wasn’t feeling the suffering because I chose to focus my thoughts on the love and warmth we shared. There is a Sanskrit expression that says “man is according to his mind” (Mana eva manushyanam). It is a major underpinning of yogic teaching — in learning to control the mind, we learn that suffering is simply a function of our mind reacting to our environment. And through our yoga practice, we learn to open our hearts and breathe through grief; live and love while we can, without fearing death. The last time I held Sherazhad, our 21 years together flashed through my mind. She was there for every peak and valley over the years. Every day I stroked her soft fur, and she returned the affection every time, without fail. It was like I was watching a great film, or like reading a great book. And when I read a great book, I don't become upset when it ends. Rather, I think to myself, “what a magnificent book … I’m glad I got to read that.” And I realized what a magnificent cat she was … and how grateful I was to have spent half my life with her.

Roar Away Stress With Lion By Allegra Gulino
Many of us are already familiar with yoga’s penchant to reduce stress. As beginners, we learn tools such as simple backbends to relieve tension in the upper back and neck, or pranayama to slow the heart rate, calm the nervous system, or focus the mind. Stress is also regularly addressed in class by such instructions as not to compete with others, or move slowly with the breath, etc. These are wonderful and life-changing practices, however, there is one area of the body that frequently is tense and often neglected—the face. How many people do you know who grind or grit their teeth at night? Can you think of someone who’s face resides in a perpetual frown? Anyone who has nervous habits such as fingernail biting or pencil or gum chewing? How about someone whose occupation or lifestyle requires that they talk all day, or conversely, someone who cannot speak up for themselves? Maybe it’s you!
When we are tense, our face, jaw, tongue and mouth can pull all sorts of tricks which can sabotage the most earnest stress reduction efforts and disturb much needed sleep. We purse our lips, frown with our mouths, clench teeth, clamp our tongues to other parts of the mouth, pull our eyebrows down and together, narrow our eyes etc. All of these habits affect mood and energy. To test this theory, try the following: clasp
your hands together, raise them overhead with straight arms and lean back a little so the weight of the arms takes them further back. Feels good, right? Now try it with a frown on your face. Not so good. Lion pose addresses facial tension in a very satisfying and cathartic way. It improves circulation throughout the face and releases tension from the jaw, tongue, cheeks, lips, eyes and brow as well as allows for an explosive roar to undo frustration from repressing how we feel. Finally there is the “leap” which fills the body with energy and excitement.
Lion involves a deep inhale followed by an explosive exhale with simultaneous facial expression requiring some coordination. You might want to practice different “lion face” elements and roar separately at first. The upper face
continued 3
continued from page 3
involves starting with eyes closed and a neutral expression and suddenly opening your eyes big and rolling them up. The lower facial part begins with mouth closed then explosively dropping your jaw wide and sticking out your tongue as far as you can and exhaling quickly. The “roar” is not a voiced “raauuwwr”, but rather an unvoiced, throaty “haaah” sound, similar to a heavy sigh. It should not make your throat sore.
There are several bodily postures in which to practice lion, but the most accessible is to sit in a chair with your feet flat on the floor and hands on your knees. When you are ready, curl your fingers and make “claws” on your knees and close your eyes. Allow your face to relax; visualize a lion. Then take in a deep and long breath. On the exhale, bend forward at the hips

and quickly raise your claws overhead while making your “lion face” and roar. Then return to sitting quietly. If you like, practice a couple more times with rests in between.
Once you are familiar with lion, be creative and mobile like a cat and make your own variations in posture. As long as you feel safely grounded during the “leap”, there is no wrong position to practice. Other positions are from sitting on your heels to rising onto your knees with arms up, standing with bent knees and hands on knees to straight legs and arms over head, or lying on your back relaxed to slapping your hands into the ground by your sides and tensing the whole body. Don’t be afraid to ROAR!

Teacher Feature – Fall 2007 Meet Annette Hyde
What do you like most about yoga? Unlike many activities, yoga can be practiced by anyone. It doesn’t matter what age, gender or body type. I like the increased flexibility, strength, and calm that my practice has brought me. It has also opened to me a world of loving and accepting people.
When did you start practicing yoga? I began my yoga studies in 1999 after attending a Baron Baptiste workshop at a local fitness convention (I’ve been a group fitness instructor since 1996). One of my best friends talked me into taking this three-hour workshop. The first time I did Downward Facing Dog, Baron said it looked “pretty good”. It grew from there. I started practicing at home and taking classes at the gyms where I worked. In the summer of 2001, I began classes at Health Advantage Yoga Center in Herndon. I have studied with my teacher, Doug Keller, since 2002. What do you like about taking classes? It’s much more fun to practice yoga with a group. I love the energy! My fellow students are wonderful people. I have a set time each week to be a student and not a teacher. With Doug’s guidance, I’ve seen my practice grow and change. Not only do I challenge my body, I also challenge my mind and spirit by letting go and allowing me to be me. When did you decide to become a yoga teacher? Immediately! I wanted to share what I learned and experienced with others. I taught my first yoga class at my gym on a Friday evening in
June 2001. I’m still teaching that class as well as four others at the same gym and two at Sun and Moon in Fairfax. I graduated from the year long Teacher Training Program at Health Advantage with Doug and Susan Van Nuys, its director, in 2004. I’ve also completed Level 1 of the Radiant Child Yoga Program with Shakta Kaur Khalsa in 2002 and YogaFit Kids with Stephanie Adams in 2003. I was an original graduate of the Down Dog Yoga Teaching Assistant Program in Georgetown in 2004.
Who has influenced your teaching? Doug Keller has been the strongest influence on my teaching with his work in yoga as therapy. I’ve also studied extensively with Todd Norian, one of John Friend’s senior Anusara Yoga teachers. What do you like about teaching yoga? I enjoy watching the changes happen in my students both physically and mentally. I love the smiles they have on their faces when they have the “Aha” moment after they have struggled with parts of their practices.
What is your yoga philosophy? I believe yoga is a continuous journey that opens the mind, strengthens the body, and frees the spirit to take on life’s opportunities and obstacles. What’s your life like other than yoga? I still teach aquatic group fitness, strength training, and kids fitness and yoga. My husband, Clint, and I will celebrate our 20th wedding anniversary October 31. We have two sons, Doug (21) and Joel (15), and two 15-month-old cats, Raven and Serena.

Class Descriptions, Resources and Staff
Ashtanga: Synchronizes a set sequence of yoga postures, yogic breathing and the practice of mula and uddiyana bandhas (energy locks) to produce an internal heat. The poses are done in rapid succession, making this a flowing and vigorous workout. This class is not recommended for beginners. Baby and Me: A special class, which supports the transition into motherhood. Using certain asana moms counter common physical issues created during infant care. Yoga helps to create a steady and relaxed feeling in the new role of motherhood. Interactive massage combined with developmental movement strengthens the mother/infant bond while facilitating infant motor development. Level 1: Learn the fundamentals and relax. This class can be joined at any time during the session. Level 2: Refine the basics and gain more awareness of the body through more advanced breath work.
*Level 3: Progress to advanced standing and seated poses and begin integrating inversions.
*Level 4: Intensify your strong asana practice by developing a deeper internal understanding of yoga. This class practices complicated asanas such as inversions, lotus, and deep backbends and students are expected to have a home practice. All Levels: Appropriate for all students, this class introduces the basics and challenges more advanced students.
Level 5: The focus of this class is on meditation and philosophy for teachers and teacher trainees.
Combination Classes: For the student who doesn’t quite feel ready to move on to the next level, but is trying to ease forward slowly, combination classes (i.e. Level 1-2) provide the avenue to do so.
Gentle: Introductory poses at a slow pace. This class is ideal for beginning students and students with health concerns.
Integral Yoga: A holistic approach to yoga that incorporates a complete hatha routine combined with a deep relaxation, pranayama, chanting and a short meditation. A stress reducing, more inward approach to yoga. Appropriate for all levels.
Kids’ classes: We will play and work with poses to increase flexibility and strength, develop coordination and posture, and explore relaxation and stress reduction tools. Yoga stories and/or visualizations will be presented in each class.
Meditation Group: A general survey and practice of various meditation philosophies and practices. Open to beginners and advanced students alike. No registration necessary. Parent/Child: Practice yoga with your children ages 5-12 and have fun learning yoga together. This light-hearted class is designed to be playful and to help build motor coordination, balance and strength. Yoga practice also helps children to reduce stress in their lives.
Pilates 1: This exercise system focuses on correct breathing, posture and core strengthening. No admittance after week three without permission of the instructor.
Pilates 2: The progression in this class is faster than in Pilates 1 and provides an energetic, full body workout. Prior Pilates experience necessary. Pre-Natal Yoga: An all-levels course that will support and empower expectant mothers. The focus is on easing aches and pains and making the body comfortable during pregnancy.
Teen classes: For the adolescent we offer classes focusing on a playful, yet disciplined practice of asana, pranayama and relaxation. Yoga can help to reduce stress, increase strength and flexibility, focus, and balance. Yoga also helps to develop selfesteem and personal awareness. Toddler/Preschool class: A fun class for young children to explore and play with yoga. *Vinyasa 1: A challenging practice that builds stamina and strength through a faster-paced flow. Students must have some yoga experience.
*Vinyasa 2: Adding more advanced poses to the fast pace of Vinyasa 1, this class is open to level 2+ students ready to test their focus and core strength. Yoga for Athletes: Targets the improvement of flexibility, balance and coordination. The focus of this class is on counteraction of muscle imbalances brought up by athletic training, restoration of healthy posture, and increased body awareness. No one is too inflexible to be in this class, beginners and “gym” athletes are welcome!
Yoga for People with Cancer/Yoga for Recovery: These slow paced classes will be a combination of yogic breathing, and deep relaxation combined with gentle movement to restore strength, range of motion and vitality. The practice will be modified for individual needs.
Yoga on the Ball: A creative and unique approach to yoga. Yoga on the ball is meditation in motion. It allows you to engage core muscle groups while challenging your balance and spatial awareness. The practice will include strengthening poses with relaxation using both stretching and breathing exercises.
*These classes require completion of at least two sessions of the previous level and permission of the teacher before registering.

Registration Information
REGISTRATION INFORMATION To register, please read all of our policy information before filling out the registration form on the following page. If you have any questions, please call the studio at (703) 525YOGA (9642). We accept beginners or new students at any time throughout the session as long as space is available in your class choice. If you are joining the session late, partial session registration is available (see below). Drop-in and single class registration is available at our normal single class rate. Local students that are considering registering for classes may take a trial class without charge to determine if Sun and Moon is the right studio for them (ask our staff for terms and information). We accept Visa, Mastercard, Discover, checks or cash.
A $20 fee will be charged for checks returned to Sun & Moon. If you fax in a credit card registration, please do not mail a copy — you may be charged twice. Sorry, we do not call to confirm registrations. However, we will call if the class you requested is full.
FEES Full Session Registration Sun and Moon classes are offered weekly on a seasonal session basis (usually 14 weeks, fewer in summer). We are a school of yoga with our classes structured to provide a wellrounded curriculum over an entire session. Prices for a Full Session Registration represent a discount off our regular Single Class rate and are listed on our class schedule.
Single Class/Drop-ins Sun and Moon allows students who are not registered in a Full Session to attend classes on a Single Class/Drop-in basis. The following are our Single Class Rates: • Classes 1 hour or less: $15 • Classes 1-1 1/2 hours: $18 • Classes 2 hours: $21
Drop-ins A Drop-in is a student not currently registered, wishing to take a single class or a current student wishing to take an additional class. Drop-ins are permitted only if space is available, so please call first. You may come to a class that is full, but you will need to wait until class begins to see if you can take the place of a “no show” that day. Drop-in fees are under Fees on this page. Please inform the teacher that you are taking the class as a drop-in.
Partial Registration For students that start mid-session or can not attend a full session, we offer students the option to register for a Partial Session. The single class rate applies if the number of classes is less than six. The following Partial Registration rates apply if the student registers for 6 or more classes: • 45 minutes = $12 • 1 hour = $14 • 1 hour 15 min = $15 • 1 hour 30 min = $16 • 2 hours = $20 10

MAKE-UPS If you miss a class, you may make it up in any other yoga class within the current session. Classes cancelled due to inclement weather may be made up during the session. Call the studio or visit our website to find out if your class has been cancelled. (For your safety, when making up classes we ask that you stay at the same or lower level yoga class.) You do not need to call ahead to do a make-up; however, you should tell teachers that you are taking their class as a make-up for your regular class. Make-ups may also be done at the Health Advantage Yoga Center or Boundless Yoga Studio under our reciprocity agreement and at any of the three Sun & Moon Studios. REFUND POLICY You must fill out a Refund Request form. The forms are available at the front desk. The date the written request is received rather than the last class attended is the criterion for determining refunds. • A $30 non-refundable administration fee is deducted from all tuitions. • After week one, all tuition less the $30 registration fee is refunded. • After week two, 75% of tuition less the $30 registration fee is refunded. • After week 3, 50% of tuition less the $30 registration fee is refunded. • After week 4, 25% of tuition less the $30 registration fee is refunded. No refunds are given after the fifth class. Refunds are made by check and may take up to six weeks.
What to wear Comfortable clothes such as shorts, footless tights or leggings with a T-shirt or leotard. Please do not wear baggy sweats or pants (this inhibits the teacher’s ability to spot misalignments). Please remove shoes before entering the yoga rooms. We have men and women’s changing areas.
