Who Am I? by Amir
Often during yoga practice, I experience a particular mental state I can best describe as a mixture of calmness, clarity, and compassion. When I get to this state, I sometimes wonder, at my core, is this who I am? Or am I the person going through the whole range of emotion the rest of the day? Yoga at its core is simply the science of self-inquiry.
Most of us are at a loss when we ponder the question “who am I” since it’s difficult for the mind to grasp what this “thing” is called “I”. It’s much easier to relate to the more established public concept we have of who we are: I’m from here or I do this, and so on. This self-concept is usually settled upon as a reasonable definition of who we are, and most of us accept this for most of our lives.
Many of us, when we first consider who we really are, immediately have the idea that we may be our bodies. Once we get past believing that, perhaps we imagine that "I" am the thoughts and feelings in my mind. But consider that the core of every thought and feeling is connected to some object in the outside world. Our minds are geared to relate to things which have some external or worldly relationship. Also consider that the mind can be “managed” by its owner. Whose mind is it after all? It is your mind, just like your body, and your senses, and just as you can tell your body what to do and what not, you can also tell your mind what to do, and what not to. The question is, who is doing the telling? On some reflection, it becomes apparent that the body is just a container moving us around. The body is the car, my mind is the driver, but “I” am the passenger.
For the practice of self-inquiry to work its magic, you have to recognize at some level that the word “I”, though superficially referring to the body and mind, is actually something much deeper. This is not an easy task, and this “deeper I” may be something beyond the ability of our human minds to truly comprehend. Perhaps we need to take a deep breath and stop trying so hard. Maybe we can catch a glimpse of that state of calmness and ease — a peaceful energy inside that we all share — and then the true self is revealed.

The Yoga of Self-Image by Alex Levin
How we define ourselves profoundly affects how we experience our lives. “Who am I?” is defined along many dimensions: woman, gardener, economist, teacher, cat-lover, success, failure, gregarious, introverted, tall, short, patient, irritable. Playing different roles and relating to the world in various ways is creative expression and the spice of life. Some of our self-defined identities are accurate, others not as much. Some are conscious, others evade our awareness. Just about all of them are temporary. Despite some inkling of this impermanence, we often struggle to preserve and defend our professional, personal, and physical self-images, only to the depletion of our energy and/or sanity. We pour precious resources into hopeful achievements and statuses. We limit our potential and our joy by our restrictive self-definitions. We committed yogis return to our classes or mats as surely as spring follows winter, as surely as the migrating birds reach their destinations. We return for many benefits–flexibility, stressreduction, challenge, community. One of the main perks is freedom. On our mats our teachers encourage us to be aware of what we are feeling, to listen to our bodies, to respect ourselves as we are now. This is one of the few venues where we are reminded to let go of expectations and judgments and to notice who we are in THIS moment. We are free to be ourselves just as our molecules are arranging themselves, just as the electronic impulses are jumping across synapses in the ever recurring now. Yoga teaches that everything we experience is in a state of flux between activity, dullness or clarity. Like the parade of our personas, the
postures and breathing we practice are a repertoire of variety and each form changes from day to day within an individual body. The mind’s chatter can also be active, dull or clear. But on the safe laboratory of the yoga mat, we get to practice connecting to the unchanging essence of ourselves within forms that change. That self is often described as calm, relaxed, peaceful, spacious. We bow to that essence when we say “namaste” to each other; to that which we all share, to that which we all are.
True security and freedom come from knowing this steady Self. While it is already who we are, we have become estranged and so it feels like we need to get reacquainted. We can do this gradually and without giving up any of our favorite roles or poses. As we feel the shape of a posture, see the kaleidoscope of our thoughts, remember the present moment on the touch of the breath, we are also practicing the awareness of the enduring Self. At first just quick sweet glimpses of wonder and enjoyment. In time, we are graced with longer gazes. We realize that we can be in a form and feel our formlessness; that we can have fun with our temporary identities, but release the vise grip attachment to them. We grow to trust in the certainty of our infinite Self, just as we can know the essence of the spring flowers is present year round.

Uttanasana for Back Health by Allegra Gulino
In my six years of teaching, I’m often asked the following question by students: “What can I do for my hamstrings?” The question is often posed by people who just executed perfectly acceptable standing poses and down dogs. This is a real headscratcher to me. Didn’t they feel the hamstrings working in the poses? Why do they wish to improve what is already reasonably healthy? I wonder where this seemingly disproportionate concentration upon hamstrings comes from.
Is it a remnant of frustrations from PE class, an idea left over from our running days, or the allure of perfect photos of straight-legged yogis in forward folds that makes our poor hamstrings the objects of dissatisfaction?
One of the most common low back injuries occurs when a person bends over, rounding their low back with straight legs to pick up something. Not only do we not “lift with our legs,” which would apply our core strength, but we make the vulnerable low back a fulcrum for the weight load.
The low back is part of the spinal column and although there is some movement in the vertebrae, it is by nature a column, not a hinge joint. The fulcrum for hinging over in forward folds should be the hips. Hamstrings are important, but spinal health is the key to healthier breathing, digestion, nervous system, strength, balance and energy. Injuries, unhealthy habits and poor postural alignment can affect the whole body, and we are rife with unhealthy habits and injuries.
Therefore, let’s approach uttanasana not as a race to acquire straight legs, but as a healing stretch for the entire back body. Stand in tadasana (mountain pose) for a few breaths. Make sure your feet are parallel and hip-width apart, your knees are slightly soft and pelvis is in a neutral position with the pubic bone and tail bone evenly pointing down. Look down at your feet and spread out your toes, press them down and then lift the arches of your feet up, pulling energy from the earth up into the legs. 4
Keeping this enlivening of the feet, place your hands on your hips, take in a deep breath and on the exhale pull in the belly muscles and hold them there as you continue to breathe. This drawing in of the belly protects your low back. To continue, bend your knees, keeping them parallel to each other and begin to sit back maintaining a tall spine. Keep the belly active as you deepen the hinge at your hips and bend your knees until your torso is lying on your thighs, keeping your back long and protected. Rest there, allowing your head and arms to hang down with a deep crease at your hips.
Now you can focus on the hamstrings. While keeping the full contact of torso to legs, slowly explore straightening the legs more. Undulate the pose with your breath, inhaling to lengthen the spine by lifting your chest away from the thighs, and exhaling to fold more deeply over the thighs, as the legs straighten and the seat lifts. To come up, place your hands on the hips, slide the shoulder blades towards each other and away from your ears, so your chest begins to peel off the legs, then keeping your back long, inhale and come up from the hips. Practicing uttanasana this way not only protects the low back but strengthens it by going up and down with back flat, belly in and hips hinging. To deepen the therapeutic benefits, you can slow down the halfway point and stay there for a breath or two. Let’s do away with the delusion of straight legs at all costs and take care of ourselves. You’ll be glad you did.
Teacher Feature Meet Audra Monk
What was your first yoga experience? When my third child was about one and a half I joined a local gym. I had been very athletic in high school and college, but being a full time mom to three young children had taken up my days and I found myself overweight. I really enjoyed working out. I liked all types of exercise, treadmills, weights and cardio classes. One day I decided to try yoga. I really liked the class, and I remember wondering “is this exercise?” I wasn’t sure, but I knew that it somehow just felt really good.
Why did you become a yoga teacher? One of the teachers at my gym was moving and they were looking for a new teacher. I regularly attended class 3 times a week and some of the other students encouraged me to teach the class. I started with some weekend teaching workshops for teaching yoga in gyms and in my quest for more knowledge became a student at Sun&Moon.
Can yoga help with weight loss? I can honestly answer this with a giant YES! Over three years ago I lost 52 pounds(and have maintained the loss) with yoga as a key component. I did join Weight Watchers to help educate myself better about food choices and for some accountability, but yoga was always number one in my heart and my life. I really understood how it felt to practice and teach yoga with some extra weight. With the occasional modification, yoga is accessible to people of all sizes and physical experience. Yoga alone will probably not lead to a great deal of weight loss, but it can help with a weight loss mind set. I had a teacher that once said the key to yoga for weight loss was “that with a yoga practice we begin to feel better about our bodies and we become more careful about what we put into
into them.” When asked, I advise people on a weight loss journey to add some yoga to their lives, to slow down, to take all things in moderation, to live and enjoy each day. A weight loss journey may be long and sometimes difficult, but yoga can enhance and strengthen the spirit.
Do you need to be flexible to do yoga? Do you need to be strong to lift weights? No, we learn or practice something to become better at it. Yoga is a safe and careful way to add flexibility to our bodies and minds.
Do you have a favorite kind of yoga? Prepare for the longest rambling answer, my friends. I adore all kinds of yoga. I am open to any kind of yoga. I like yoga where you move a lot and yoga where you almost don’t move at all. I like to move from pose to pose with breaks and discussion, I like to flow from pose to pose with no stops. I like to read about yoga poses and philosophy. I like yoga outside, I like yoga with my kids, I like to just sit and breathe yoga. I like to do just one pose and be done, I like to do yoga and watch TV. I like to tell people about yoga. I like yoga early in the morning on the beach, I like yoga in a shady spot after a nice run. I like yoga with popular music, “yoga” music, or no music at all. I like to take yoga from different teachers and from DVDs. I like “ pretzel-y” yoga and relaxing yoga. I like yoga with green eggs and ham! Seriously though, I really do like and enjoy all types and styles of yoga. I think it is important for us all as students of life to be open and accepting of many many different ideas and ways to do things. 5

General Information and Fees
REGISTRATION INFORMATION To register, please read all of our policy information before filling out the registration form on the following page. If you have any questions, please call the studio at (703) 525YOGA (9642). We accept beginners or new students at any time throughout the session as long as space is available in your class choice. If you are joining the session late, partial session registration is available (see below). Drop-in and single class registration is available at our normal single class rate. Local students who are considering registering for classes may take a trial class without charge to determine if Sun&Moon is the right studio for them (ask our staff for terms and information). We accept Visa, Mastercard, Discover, checks or cash.
A $20 fee will be charged for checks returned to Sun&Moon. If you fax in a credit card registration, please do not mail a copy — you may be charged twice. Sorry, we do not call to confirm registrations. However, we will call if the class you requested is full.
FEES Full Session Registration Sun&Moon classes are offered weekly on a seasonal session basis (usually 14 weeks, fewer in summer). We are a school of yoga with our classes structured to provide a well-rounded curriculum over an entire session. Prices for a full session registration represent a discount off our regular single class rate and are listed on our class schedule. Single Class/Drop-ins Sun&Moon allows students who are not registered for a full session to attend classes on a single class/drop-in basis. The following are our single class rates: • Classes 1 hour or less: $15 • Classes 1-1 1/2 hours: $18 • Classes 2 hours: $21
Drop-ins A Drop-in is a student not currently registered, wishing to take a single class, or a current student wishing to take an additional class. Drop-ins are permitted only if space is available, so please call first. You may come to a class that is full, but you will need to wait until class begins to see if you can take the place of a “no show” that day. Drop-in fees are under Fees on this page. Please inform the teacher that you are taking the class as a drop-in.
Partial Registration For students who start mid-session or can not attend a full session, we offer students the option to register for a partial session. The single class rate applies if the number of classes is less than six. The following partial registration rates apply if the student registers for six or more classes: • 45 minutes = $12 • 1 hour = $14 • 1 hour 15 min = $15 • 1 hour 30 min = $16 • 2 hours = $20 10

MAKE-UPS If you miss a class, you may make it up in any other yoga class within the current session. Classes cancelled due to inclement weather may be made up during the session. Call the studio or visit our website to find out if your class has been cancelled. (For your safety, when making up classes we ask that you stay at the same or lower level yoga class.) You do not need to call ahead to do a make-up; however, you should tell teachers that you are taking their class as a make-up for your regular class. Make-ups may also be done at the Health Advantage Yoga Center or Boundless Yoga Studio under our reciprocity agreement and at any of the three Sun&Moon Studios. REFUND POLICY You must fill out a Refund Request form. The forms are available at the front desk. The date the written request is received rather than the last class attended is the criterion for determining refunds. • A $30 non-refundable administration fee is deducted from all tuitions. • After week one, all tuition less the $30 registration fee is refunded. • After week two, 75% of tuition less the $30 registration fee is refunded. • After week 3, 50% of tuition less the $30 registration fee is refunded. • After week 4, 25% of tuition less the $30 registration fee is refunded. No refunds are given after the fifth class. Refunds are made by check and may take up to six weeks.
What to wear Comfortable clothes such as shorts, footless tights or leggings with a T-shirt or leotard. Please do not wear baggy sweats or pants (this inhibits the teacher’s ability to spot misalignments). Please remove shoes before entering the yoga rooms. We have men and women’s changing areas. No heavy perfume/cologne or noisy jewelry please. Please leave cell phone and valuables locked in your car. Sun&Moon Yoga Studio, Ltd. reserves the right to dismiss (with or without a refund) any student who disrupts the harmony of the class and/or studio environment.
