Summer 2010
About Savasana by Amir
Savasana (Corpse Pose) is the most important part of our yoga practice. This pose serves many purposes — physical, mental and emotional — and teachers often use it to start and end class. The pose looks deceptively simple and many tend to consider it an easy pose. But what, at first, looks simple and easy, eventually turns out to be somewhat difficult. The goal of Savasana is to relax the body and mind to make them both tranquil and calm. Not only should your body be relaxed and motionless, but even your mind should be calm, like the surface of a still pond. The result is a deep and profound relaxation that carries into our daily life activities and circumstances.
Most yoga classes follow a similar pattern: (1) They begin with a short opening period of centering and turning inwards away from the mundane world and setting an intention for the practice. (2) Following that comes the asana practice itself. (3) At the end comes an integration phase where the effects of the yoga practice are allowed to absorb and penetrate deep into the self — Savasana is the primary vehicle of that process. After a balanced asana practice, our bodies will have been stretched, contracted, twisted and folded. Following the exertion of the practice, Savasana allows our body and mind a chance to regroup and retune. An intelligent yoga practice will teach the nervous system a host of new neuromuscular movements — meaning that even the deepest muscles have the opportunity to let go and shed their habitual patterns of movement. Savasana gives the nervous system a chance to integrate this new information in a brief pause before we’re thrust back into the usual stresses of daily life. Judith Lasater wrote the following practical advice:
“…Savasana teaches much more than relaxation. It teaches clearly and concretely the importance of being, not just doing. Our culture is very much a “doing” culture; we value action and results over being and awareness. Savasana may be the only time during the week that the student is quiet and present, not acting, not achieving, not sleeping, just being present.” Savasana is a very challenging pose — it has the potential to take us to the limits of our mindfulness. It is as easy to think of it as unnecessary and to avoid it as it is to allow it to become nothing more than taking a nap. It demands both diligence and finesse. Too long and our minds become dull and we fall asleep. Too little time, or time spent wrestling with thoughts, and it’s ineffective.
Remember that everything has a beginning, a middle, and an end. If you ever have to leave class early, make sure you reserve at least five minutes to take Savasana before you leave in order to soak in the benefits of the practice. Even if you forgot to notify your teacher, by taking Savasana, you send a clear and certain signal that your intention is to end your practice with the finishing touch it deserves. 2
Inner Treasure: Taking Your Yoga Deep by Alex Levin
When the mind has settled, we are established in our essential nature, which is unbounded consciousness. —Yoga Sutras I:3
Yoga awakens our desire to experience the truth of who we are. People often report that yoga gives them a sense of having arrived “home” or of being more at home in themselves. It happens on many levels. We move a new way, or in a way that we haven’t moved in a long time, and the physical relaxation is a welcome ease. We direct our attention to movement with breath and feel subtle energies we didn’t realize existed, as if discovering secret chambers in our own house. We feel as if there’s more room in our minds as well as our bodies. It’s like a small aperture allows in just enough light for us to recognize that we have a treasure hidden within us. The opening is a taste of freedom, of our essential nature. Once we’ve had this taste, we cannot forget it.
However, for most of us this feeling, this knowing, seems to repeatedly slip away. We get back to our jobs, our families, our routines and the contrast can be unsettling. At first, equanimity is not available at the snap of a finger, and we may encounter challenge every step of the way outside the yoga studio. Desperate for our next fix of bliss, we might feel like a junkie counting the hours until our next yoga class. The analogy ends here because unlike a havoc-wreaking addiction, the elixir of yoga is not a temporary high or numbing out, but a step-by-step practical path toward realizing our full potential. The commitment to yoga class and perhaps our own home practice is not a way of escaping life’s demands, but of cultivating, indeed becoming, the presence that allows us to engage more fully in every moment of our existence.
To help keep our focus, we can remember that yogis through the ages have paved the way for us, that we are not alone on our path. We can reach out for support. As Sun & Moon teachers, staff and students, we are all part of the sangha, the community dedicated to learning, living and sharing this yogic path. Wherever you are on the continuum of your
yoga passion—whether burning with motivation or knowing yoga “works” but lately feeling uninspired— this season you can let Sun & Moon support your commitment to growth and transformation, whether that is by making sure you get to your weekly class even as other demands and opportunities tug at your time, or by considering one of our structured programs to guide your inquiry.
Participating in Summer Bliss 2010 will refresh your resolve during the eight weeks of July and August. You’ll release tension with three classes a week at either studio and four individual healing sessions. It’s much like going on yoga retreat without leaving home, and according to last year’s participants, reveals yoga’s power in our daily lives in a new light.
Or, if your desire is to know more about how yoga works, for example how poses, chakras and chanting relate to each other, how to know which to do when, or how The Yoga Sutras inform our practice or our lives, you may be interested in pursuing Sun & Moon’s Yoga In-Depth Advanced Studies and Teacher Training. Beginning in September, this course will explore yoga techniques and lifestyle as they are grounded in historic and contemporary wisdom and science. You’ll find more details for these programs online and in fliers at the studios.
However we decide to remember our inner treasure, our relaxed presence, with continued practice we increasingly witness how yoga’s curriculum meets us where we are, just as we are, to loosen whatever restricts us. We identify more and more with the feel of our awareness, of unbounded consciousness. We see that the flow of our being emerges from this stillness and spaciousness. We think, speak and act from authenticity, integrity and courage. Rather than a cafeteria of disappointing and inconvenient obligations that limit what we really want to be doing, life begins to feel more like a banquet of opportunity and limitless possibility.

Balancing Mudra Vinyasa by Suzanne Morgan
A hasta mudra is a gesture or positioning of the hands to channel and direct energy in the body. Mudras come from the over-three-thousand-year-old tradition of yoga originating in India. Hasta means “hand” in Sanskrit and “mudra” comes from the Sanskrit word “mud”, meaning to delight. A mudra is a “seal” as in sealing your connection with the Divine and sealing the energy in the body. There are many forms of mudras, such as with the eyes and the tongue. Mudras may also incorporate the whole body. While yoga is a spiritual practice, it also offers practical healing applications that benefit even those who aren’t spiritually oriented. Hasta mudras work in a way that can be compared to acupuncture or reflexology. By activating parts of the hand, a hasta mudra opens up channels of energy and sends messages to the brain. Try this balancing mudra series and see if it speaks to you. If you are sensitive energetically, you may receive immediate results. But if the benefit doesn’t come quickly, be patient and consistent in your practice.

BALANCING MUDRA Meaning/Benefit: This incorporates the gyan, shunya, prithivi, and bhudi mudras into a vinyasa — a flow of gestures that connects with the breath.
The gyan mudra represents home or roots and promotes a calming and grounding effect. This mudra can be used for cultivating simplicity in your life and for enhanced concentration.
The shunya mudra is called the Heaven mudra and can help us when we no longer hear beautiful things or when we aren’t listening to others. The shunya

mudra promotes conscious listening and patience, allowing us to accept the present as it is now. This mudra also helps with physical hearing problems.
The prithivi mudra will help you increase your energy. This gesture not only increases and nourishes physical strength, but also psychological strength. The bhudi mudra allows us to speak the truth. This mudra will help you channel intuition and communication of your innermost thoughts. It promotes balance and fluidity — both on a physical level (relieving dry mouth or eyes) and on an emotional level.
The photos show the sequence of movement, from left to right. Repeat this sequence for five minutes or so. Or you can extend the length of time, making this a beautiful meditation practice. The primary benefit of this mudra sequence is to calm the mind. In addition, one of my students has reported great success using this sequence in helping her go to sleep at night. This lovely vinyasa can be done anywhere — while waiting in line, walking or sitting. It also helps to set a

positive intention as you form a mudra and concentrate on this intention during the practice. To make this vinyasa more effective, concentrate on the following words as you touch each respective finger: 1) index finger – calm energy; 2) middle finger: patience; 3) ring finger: confidence; and 4) pinky: intuition. How to form the mudras and integrate the breath: It also helps to set a positive intention as you form a mudra and concentrate on this intention during the practice. 1. Touch the tip of the index finger to the tip of the thumb. Inhale deeply and slowly.
2. Touch the tip of the middle finger to the tip of the thumb. Exhale slowly and completely. 3. Touch the tip of the ring finger to the tip of the thumb. Inhale deeply and slowly. 4. Touch the tip of the pinky finger to the thumb. Exhale slowly and completely.

Teacher Feature Meet Charlotte Raich
What inspired you to practice yoga? I have always been interested in breath, movement and how the body works. In my childhood and teens I was a dancer. I practiced ballet, tap and jazz. I loved the movement and expression, but it took a physical and mental toll on my body. It was all about having the perfect form. That really puts the pressure on. When I started practicing yoga, I realized that form is not as important. I learned to accept my body just as it is on any given day. This concept was enlightening. It inspired me to continue on with my practice of yoga. I pass this message along to my students as well. What people have influenced you along your yoga journey and where did you get your training? I have always been interested in the teachings and practice of Dharma Mittra and Yogi Bhajan. This inspired me to do my first Yoga Alliance teacher training with Darshan Kaur Khalsa in Kundalini Yoga in Herndon. A year later I did my second yoga alliance certification in Hatha Yoga with Susan Van Nuys and Doug Keller. I have also done the Radiant Child teacher training for children. I have a B.S. in Exercise Science and Health Promotion. Currently I am getting my master’s degree at Marymount University in Health Promotion Management. One of the many things that my training brought me is a fascination with yoga philosophy. The ancient written pieces and the Yoga Sutras changed my attitude and outlook on life. It “rocked my world”

for the better. Since then, I have been on a new path of knowledge, acceptance and understanding. I have found that when I am doubtful or troubled about most things in life, I can find the answers that I seek in these ancient teachings of yoga. It has been an amazing journey so far… this thing called life. What style of yoga do you teach? I do believe that there is a little piece of all of my teachers in my style. Then, my own personal element gets added. I don’t really label my style of teaching in any way. If I had to choose I would say that it is a “little of everything” (hatha) with pranayama, vinyasa and meditation mixed in. My personal practice includes all types of yoga. I don’t limit myself to one thing. I go out and see what is out there and what is being offered at all studios, and give it a try. You name it, I’ll try it. What do you like to do in your free time? I really love to ride my bike. There is something so freeing about it. I just get out there and go as fast and as far as I can. It is great to live in Arlington with all of the trails around here. I also enjoy going out to meals. Just when I think that I have tried everything in Arlington, another restaurant pops up that gets added to my list. My favorite thing to do is just relax with my kids. This is especially good when there is no soccer practice, homework or other obligations. It is great when we have time together to just be. That is my favorite thing to do, just be.

Our Mission
Sun & Moon Yoga Studio is a place for people to experience and study hatha yoga. We believe in a holistic approach to the study of yoga, giving our students a wellrounded yoga education, bringing in teachers with an eclectic background of yoga. We believe in combining alignment techniques of the body with breath techniques for calming and balancing the mind and the belief and faith that our work feeds us and is fed by the (spirit) Divine Universal Energy present in us all and in all things.

General Information and Fees
REGISTRATION INFORMATION Sun & Moon classes are offered weekly on a quarterly basis. We are a school of yoga with our classes structured to provide a well-rounded curriculum over an entire quarter. We recommend that students register for the full quarter, although we do allow students to attend on a partial registration or drop-in basis. Please read all of our policy information before filling out the registration form on the following page. We accept beginners or new students at any time throughout the quarter as long as space is available in your class choice. If you are joining the quarter late, partial registration is available at a discount, provided that you sign up for six classes or more. Local students who have never been to Sun & Moon before, and are considering registering for classes, may take their first class free to determine if Sun & Moon is the right studio for them (ask our staff for terms and information). We accept Visa, Mastercard, Discover, checks or cash. A $35 fee will be charged for checks returned to Sun & Moon. If you fax in a credit card registration, please do not mail a copy — you may be charged twice.
REGISTER EARLY Registrations are taken on a first-come, first-served basis. Please register early to avoid disappointment. Sorry, we do not call to confirm registrations. However, we will call if the class you requested is full. Registrations accepted by phone, mail, fax and online.
SINGLE CLASS/DROP-INS A drop-in is anyone taking a single class for which they have not registered for a full quarter. Those dropping in to an additional class during a quarter for which they have registered may pay the discounted full-quarterly registration rate. Drop-ins are permitted only if space is available, so please call first. If you come to a class that is full, you will need to wait until class begins to see if you can take the place of a "no show" that day. Please inform the teacher that you are taking the class as a drop-in. FEES 75 and 90 minute classes: $15/class with quarter registration $20/class to drop-in
45 and 60 minute classes: $13/class with quarter registration $15/class to drop-in

MAKE-UPS We have a very liberal make-up policy. If you miss a class, you may make it up in any other yoga class within the current quarter at either studio. If you know you will miss classes in the future, you may make them up in advance of your absence. When you are doing a make-up, sign in at the front desk and inform the teacher. All make-ups must be taken during the quarter for which you are registered; they may not be carried over to the next quarter. Classes cancelled due to inclement weather may be made up during the quarter. Call the studio or visit our website to find out if your class has been cancelled.
REFUND AND CREDIT POLICY Keeping in mind our liberal make-up policy, which allows you to make up missed classes in any other scheduled class during the quarter, we understand that life circumstances sometimes get in the way, and yoga has to wait. If you decide you must ask for a credit or a refund, they are available for the number of classes remaining in the quarter, based on the date we receive your request (not the date you last attended). Therefore, please fill out a refund/credit request form as soon as you know you can no longer attend your classes. Refunds will incur the following administrative fees: $40 for classes, $5 for workshops. Refunds are given by check and may take up to six weeks to process. A Letter of Credit is valid for one year from the date issued, and incurs no administrative fee. Letters of Credit apply to classes and workshops only, and cannot be redeemed for cash or merchandise. Letters of Credit for workshops are available up to the day before the event. Because your spot has been reserved in workshops, no refunds or credits are given the day of or after the workshop. WHAT TO WEAR Comfortable clothes such as shorts, footless tights or leggings with a t-shirt or leotard. Please do not wear baggy sweats or pants (this inhibits the teacher’s ability to spot misalignments). Please remove shoes before entering the yoga rooms. We have men and women’s changing areas. No heavy perfume/cologne or noisy jewelry, please. Please leave cell phone and valuables locked in your car. Sun & Moon Yoga Studio, Ltd. reserves the right to dismiss (with or without a refund) any student who disrupts the harmony of the class and/or studio environment.

Sun & Moon In-Depth:
Advanced Yoga Studies and Teacher Training Are you ready to take your yoga into the transformational realm? If so, dive deeply with us into the curriculum and community of our new In-Depth program, launching this September. The program blends ancient wisdom with grounded contemporary counsel to cultivate relaxed awareness at all levels of our being — physical, energetic, mental, emotional and spiritual.
The commitment includes one weekend intensive training per month for ten months, a weekly studio class, and 20 hours of elective workshops with your choice of Sun & Moon teachers and visiting faculty. Choose the teacher training path and assist a teacher once/week, pass a final exam, and receive your 200-hour teaching certificate, meeting Yoga Alliance standards. Or choose the advanced studies path, and work with a mentor on a seva (service) project and a research project of your choice. Visit our website for an application and more information, or email our In-Depth Director at alex@sunandmoonstudio.com.

4-3-2-Oneness: Summer Bliss 2010 4 private healing sessions. 3 yoga classes per week. 2 group gatherings. 1 blissed out yogi.
Instead of “taking the summer off,” take off on a new path this July and August by re-dedicating yourself to your practice and your well-being. Enter September fresh and whole.
For an average of one hour a day, you’ll customize your Summer of Bliss yoga lifestyle with Sun & Moon’s classes and one-on-one healing services. To meet your personal goals and match your scheduling needs, choose four of six individual sessions — private yoga class, massage, acupuncture, nutritional consult, wellness coaching, and reflexology.
With support from our community and yogic principles, each participant will make and follow through on choices that will lead to strength, balanced energy, and calm centeredness. Visit our website for more info, or email Summer Bliss Coordinator at nancy@sunandmoonstudio.com.
