Positive Thinking by Amir

Yet again, my company decided to move its offices. When I heard the news, my thoughts immediately turned negative about having to adjust to working in another new location. But I soon caught myself and realized that I really didn’t know what it would be like in the new office, and wasn’t yet entitled to an opinion. I was looking into the future and automatically projecting a negative reality, when I truly knew nothing about it. We are all guilty of entertaining negative thoughts from time to time, and sometimes they are so loud and obvious that we can’t help but notice and consciously respond to them. Other times, they are so automatic and habitual that we accept them as normal. Often, we believe them to be true and behave accordingly. We spend a lot of time in the cloud of our often-negative minds, but the truth is that these negative thoughts turn out to be false much more often than true. And even when they are true, we tend to greatly exaggerate their negative aspects. Some of us even seem to have a natural negative default mechanism in our thinking; those of us who fall in this category may not even realize it. If we are well accustomed to thinking the sky will fall, why should we change our thinking? Negative thinking causes not just basic and fleeting negative feelings, but can turn into full blown fear, cynicism, and lingering depression. Our yoga practice teaches us to observe and examine each thought that runs through the mind, which helps us to build the wisdom and discipline to act mindfully instead of defaulting to a mindless and habitual reaction. Negative thoughts and emotions cannot live without our attention to them. If we refuse to give them any attention, we take the life out of them. Through yoga, we also develop the skills to be fully mindful in the present moment, and not live out of imagination about something that may or may not happen in the future. Consider this: even if there are bad times ahead, why not just wait to experience the bad time in the future rather than both now AND in the future.

2

A positive mind is in harmony with the whole self; a negative mind takes us out of that harmonious balance. With a positive mind, all our actions and thoughts are directed in accordance with the object in view. With a negative mind, our actions are scattered and distressed, rarely leading toward success. Two simple paths lie ahead of every turn of thought. Why not choose the path of the positive?

Five Easy Pieces by Alex Levin

Yoga offers us many, varied, and elegantly simple tools to help us unravel our knots. Many and varied so as to meet each of us exactly where we are at any moment, and therefore help us see that it is indeed possible to “be in” the moment. Elegantly simple, for example, is the concept of Five Dimensions, panchamaya, (pancha - five, maya - pervasive dimension) that helps us slide out of left brain architecture and into our holistic wisdom. Simple but powerful ways to untangle knots. With hopes for a solution to one of my deepest frustrations, I had the opportunity to ask one of my favorite teachers, Erich Schiffmann,“how can I address the recurring and familiar knots of my life—is there a better way to wrestle with them?” Erich’s answer: “Practice on the easy stuff.” I’ve pondered this response for some time as it struck me a bit like a Zen koan; probably because of my hard-headed belief that there’s value to struggling with the hard stuff. The five dimensions of our being offer “easy stuff” for our practice. We experience each maya all the time, but our attention may be more keen on one or the other, and our attention is constantly being turned and shaped by our experiences. One technique is simply to become more aware of each of these dimensions separately, which yields a better understanding of how they interrelate. Ultimately, we better understand ourselves. The ancient wise yogis stated that first we should recognize that we are a “food body”: inseparable from the sun, rain, soil, the worms, the plants and animals we eat as well as from each other. This physical body enjoys and benefits from the food we eat and the asana on our mats. We can also find ourselves fixated on some part of our physical presence and that very fixation can prevent us from appreciating the whole of it. We are also just as much an energetic body, made up of forces that deliver and distribute the prana. Our breath is a major player in the systems of this dimension that animate the food body. As with the food body, we are interdependent with other life, as well as with the atmospheric and planetary conditions for this spark that keeps us vibrant.

We are, too, a batch of sense organs that experience our surroundings through smell, taste, sight, touch and sound, including the sounds that comprise meaning in language. Our emotions are closely linked to this dimension. In part we live too much here in our modern world — resurrecting memories and planning for the near and distant future. But we can easily rectify that imbalance by simply tuning the “dial” of our perceptions toward the fragrance of hyacinths or a musical piece or to the texture of our breath at any moment. In the midst of all that, we are a personality who has preferences, and over time learns to be more and more discriminating: a wisdom body that ultimately makes choices from all the knowledge available to us, including from our hearts and intuition. From this perspective we make choices most appropriate for the moment at hand. This lens of the panchamayas is a yoga practice of continuous opening that helps us make fewer knots in the first place, but also unravel existing ones. There’s nothing wrong with the knots; they are the result of actions from our best wisdom at a given time. Over time, however, holding on to the knots is exhausting. Even slightly loosened fibers of our knots unleash the sweet contentment of simply being that is the fifth maya. Probably the most seductive and addictive, yet most elusive. We’ve all tasted this inner reasonless joy and grasped for it when it seemed to disappear. But there is nothing to do to get it: it’s already there, always present—an admittedly tough shift for those of us determined to grapple. All that is needed is a little willingness to set aside our obsession with the knots and look, feel, and perceive clearly what is actually here, in this moment, at any maya. It’s easy.

Garudasana – Eagle Pose by Enid Kassner

If you have a limited time for your home practice (don’t we all!), you can try to select postures that incorporate multiple benefits. One such candidate is Garudasana, or Eagle pose. This is a classic standing balance pose, but let’s start first with a seated version. Sitting on the floor with your knees bent and your feet on the floor, cross your left leg over the right. If you can manage to tuck the toes of the left foot behind the right ankle you may do so, but this is optional. Then, stretch your arms straight out in front of you, palms facing up. Keeping the top of the arm bones firmly in the shoulder sockets, cross the right arm all the way over the left, bend the elbows, and turn your thumbs toward your face. You might be able to add a bit more twist in the arms by bringing the palms of the hands together, instead of the backs. Either variation is fine. Draw the shoulder blades down your back, even as you gently lift the elbows. All right – now that your body has the basics, see if you can lift your feet off the floor, using your abdominal strength to balance on your tail bone. Unwind, shake everything out, and switch sides. You can even do this posture while seated at your desk as a nice break from the keyboard. Now for the standing variation. Start in Mountain pose with your feet hip distance apart and parallel. Bend your knees and shift your weight onto your right foot, coming onto the ball of your left foot. Take a visual focal point (a drishti)

4

to help with balance. Looking steadily at your focal point see if you can lift your left foot off the floor and cross it over the right. As with the seated pose, you may or may not be able to tuck the toes of the left foot behind the right ankle. Try to keep the knees deeply bent and squeeze the legs together. This aspect of the posture will strengthen the standing foot, ankle, and leg and help improve your balance. If you’re ready to add the arms, cross the right over the left, thumbs toward your face with either the backs or palms of the hands toward each other. Keep the spine long and the breath steady. If you’re feeling stable, sit down into the pose and squeeze the arms, stretching the backs of the shoulders. There is a temptation to tuck the pelvis under. Try to avoid this by bringing a little curve into your low back. You might experiment with how the sensation changes by lifting the elbows and then drawing them down; by having the knees more or less bent. When you’re ready to come out, stretch your arms and the free leg wide out to the sides, like an eagle taking off from its nest. Return to the stability of Mountain pose on two feet, and then practice on the other side.

Teacher Feature Meet Diana Erkiletian

Diana, you have been practicing yoga for 12 years now. Has your practice changed much from when you were a beginner? How so? My yoga practice has changed with me over the years. As a wife and mother, I have found that there are moments when it is my child that is my yoga, my husband, cooking, or the many sacred yet ordinary events that unfold throughout the day. Sometimes it’s as simple as remembering to take a breath. It’s often the simplest techniques of yoga that bring me to a deeper way of being. So my practice reflects the ever changing fluctuations of my life. I have finally given myself the freedom to practice a pose singularly. To sit in meditation without needing a full asana practice. The possibility of practicing this way in my early twenties would have thrown me into an intellectual whirl. I had a fixed idea of a 60-90 minute practice, covering all the basics. Only then, could I sit and meditate. So ultimately, I feel that this is a perfect representation of what yoga is. Simply put, it is what we choose it to be. It has given me a method of liberating myself from my very own ideas. I suppose it pulled me out of ‘thinking mind’ and gave me a way to “be.” We have talked about how yoga principles are brought off the mat and into the world. What are some of those lessons that you have been able to bring into your life? One of the most recent yogic principles that jumped off the mat was, “Respect your edges.” For a myriad of reasons one struggles with this in a yoga practice. From being too flexible to dealing with dis-ease, it can be difficult to accept where we are at any given moment in our yoga practice. I have found it helpful to have dis-ease in my body because I know exactly where I need to be. It’s liberating and I can let go of the striving to go beyond. So, as my husband and I sat trying to figure out how to pay for a trip that we couldn't afford, I shared this concept with him, and a weight was lifted for both of us. I have everything I

need at any given moment. I realized that I could stop striving and be content with what I have. It was liberating to accept that I simply couldn't afford something. What were some of the lessons you learned early on practicing yoga? Is there one that stands out? There is a lesson that stands out that I continue to draw wisdom from. It was when I was practicing yoga for about a year or so. I noticed that my reflexes had gotten exceptionally quick. I would get a little thrill whenever I was reminded of it. I was excited and proud of my achievement. Back then my husband and I had a tiny little mirrored cabinet in our bathroom. It held all our toiletries on shelves about 2 inches wide. Whenever I knocked something off the shelf I was, in typical fashion, able to catch the plummeting object before it hit the sink. This went on for awhile and I continued to feel good about my ability to catch anything before it fell until one day the A-HA moment came. If I was being mindful then nothing would have fallen in the first place. Suddenly it put everything into perspective. There was a quiet observance beyond emotion or judgement. A really sacred place that is a joy to return to when I am blessed with enough grace to carry me there. Being mindful is the strongest yoga practice. It is often how we exit or enter a pose that shows us how strong our practice is. It’s the spaces in between. What are you working on in your asana practice? I am gravitating to all things mala. Malas have 108 beads on them for chanting or praying. I find it to be a really nice meditation practice, probably because of my Catholic upbringing as rosaries, too, have 108 beads. I have been focusing on taking the journey around the mala through asana. My daily practice is listening to what my body needs and coming up with 3 asanas to do my mala practice with. I typically break up the counts into four rounds of twenty-seven. Malas have breathed new life into my practice, and what a joy it is. 5

Our Mission

Sun & Moon Yoga Studio is a place for people to experience and study hatha yoga. We believe in a holistic approach to the study of yoga, giving our students a wellrounded yoga education, bringing in teachers with an eclectic background of yoga. We believe in combining alignment techniques of the body with breath techniques for calming and balancing the mind and the belief and faith that our work feeds us and is fed by the (spirit) Divine Universal Energy present in us all and in all things.

General Information and Fees REGISTRATIOn InFORMATIOn Sun & Moon classes are offered weekly on a quarterly basis. We are a school of yoga with our classes structured to provide a well-rounded curriculum over an entire quarter. We recommend that students register for the full quarter, although we do allow students to attend with partial registration and/or on a drop-in basis. Please read all of our policy information before filling out the registration form on the following page. We accept beginners or new students at any time throughout the quarter as long as space is available in your class choice. If you are joining the quarter late, partial registration is available at a discount, provided that you sign up for six or more classes. Local students who have never been to Sun & Moon before, and are considering registering for classes, may take their first class free to determine if Sun & Moon is the right studio for them (ask our staff for terms and information). We accept Visa, Mastercard, Discover, checks or cash. A $35 fee will be charged for checks returned to Sun & Moon. REGISTER EARLY Registration is on a first-come, first-served basis. You have the option to do this by phone, mail, fax, or online. Please note, we will contact you only if the class you have chosen is full. SInGLE CLASS/DROP-InS A “drop-in” class is one you are not registered for. The rate for the "drop-in" class is dependent on whether you are currently registered for the quarter. We offer our students who are registered in the current quarter the discounted registration rate for an additional drop-in class. Students who are not registered in the current quarter pay the full drop-in fee. Note that though we always welcome drop-ins, occasionally space will not be available in a fully-subscribed class. FEES 75 and 90 minute classes: $15/class for minimum of 6 classes per quarter $20/class to drop-in 45 and 60 minute classes: $13/class for minimum of 6 classes per quarter $15/class to drop-in

MAKE-uPS We invite you to make up a missed class in any other yoga class within the current quarter at either studio. You may also make up classes in advance of a future absence within the current quarter. When you are doing a make-up, sign in at the front desk and inform the teacher. All make-ups must be taken during the quarter for which you are registered; they may not be carried over to the next quarter. Classes cancelled due to inclement weather may be made up during the quarter. Call the studio or visit our website to find out if your class has been cancelled. REFunD AnD CREDIT POLICY Keeping in mind our liberal make-up policy, we understand that life circumstances sometimes get in the way, and yoga has to wait. If you decide you must ask for a credit or a refund, they are available for the number of classes remaining in the quarter, based on the date we receive your request (not the date you last attended). Therefore, please fill out a refund/credit request form as soon as you know you can no longer attend your classes. Refunds will incur the following administrative fees: $40 for classes, $5 for workshops. Refunds are given by check and may take up to six weeks to process. A Letter of Credit is valid for one year from the date issued, and incurs no administrative fee. Letters of Credit apply to classes and workshops only, and cannot be redeemed for cash or merchandise. Letters of Credit for workshops are available up to the day before the event. Because your spot has been reserved in workshops, no refunds or credits are given the day of or after the workshop. WHAT TO WEAR & OTHER uSEFuL InFORMATIOn Comfortable clothes such as shorts, footless tights or leggings with a t-shirt or leotard. Please do not wear baggy sweats or pants (this inhibits the teacher’s ability to spot misalignments). Please remove shoes before entering the yoga rooms. We have men and women’s changing areas. No heavy perfume/cologne or noisy jewelry, please. For your safety, please leave valuables locked and hidden in your car. Cell phones must be silenced; for the benefit of all, we strongly discourage cell phones in the yoga room. Sun & Moon Yoga Studio, Ltd. reserves the right to dismiss (with or without a refund) any student who disrupts the harmony of the class and/or studio environment.
