Summer 2011

Voices from the Path by our students

Amir’s column is on temporary hiatus; we look forward to the return of his words soon. Meanwhile, welcome to our new quarterly feature. We are excited to share stories from our students about how and why yoga matters. If you have a “Voice” from your path that you’d like to share with our community, please email it in about 200 words, with a high resolution photo, to voices@sunandmoonstudio.com.

In May of 2007 I grabbed the small brass ring that tantalizes many writers: a prestigious imprint of Random House gave me a book contract. I received a nice advance, an unreasonable due date, all sorts of encouragement, and I was ecstatic. This book had been germinating for years, and finally, it was going to become a reality. All I had to do was write it. At the same time, I became much more serious about my yoga practice. The cherished once-a-week class became twice, then three times a week. During the 2008 summer bliss program, when we introduced ourselves and our intentions, I announced that the bliss of yoga would help me finish my book. (Ditto, 2009 and 2010) Yoga became inextricably linked to the progress of my work. Yet as I progressed in one, I was paralyzed in the other. Photo by Christie Zepeda

Perhaps there was a literal physical block that once removed would liberate my literary voice, my chakra of creativity. I had the story, I just didn’t know how to tell it. I wrote many pages and they sucked. Weeks and months passed with no progress on my book, yet not a week went by without attending a class at Sun & Moon. Had my priorities gotten confused? Then in the beginning of February, I started to actually write (as opposed to type). Each day I would spend hours and hours at my computer, lost in my book, carried by a state of creative flow. No longer was my inability to write my book the defining fact of my identity, much like my inability to do wheel pose had once been a defining part of my yogic persona. At some point, I stopped caring about wheel and experienced my practice -- from initial centering to Savasana -- in its entirety as a sweet, breath-filled journey of concentration, of discovery, of ease and of a strange state of egolessness. And beginning in February, that is what happened with my book. Caught in the exquisite embrace of awareness and ease, I found my voice and finished my manuscript. If I were a more sophisticated yogini, I would invoke the eight limbs and explain this experience in the context of dharana, which is concentration, and dhyana, or the state of unfocused, keen awareness. I am not that sophisticated. I only know that all the subtle shifts in awareness and sentience that occur on the mat are reflected in daily life. Not always and not consistently. But when those states of “yoga” and “real life” are no longer neatly compartmentalized, so many things that once seemed impossible no longer are. Except, of course, wheel pose.

“My head won’t leave my head alone,” sings Dave Matthews. If you’ve ever suffered from anxiety, depression or even just garden-variety worry, you know what he means. Dwelling. Rehashing. Having mental arguments with people who aren’t there. Imagining scenarios that not only haven’t happened, but aren’t very likely. Or, perhaps more pointlessly, that have already happened and can’t be altered. I used to say I couldn’t possibly meditate. I’d tried it and my brain simply wouldn’t calm down, instead it bounced around like Tom Cruise on Oprah’s couch. But I realized one day in yoga class that this was the one time and place when my mind didn’t behave like a hyperactive puppy. In the sanctuary of the studio I’m thinking about the asana, I’m attaching breath to movement, I’m focused on the voice of the teacher, or on my own inner voice. I am attending to my alignment and reveling in what my body is feeling and capable of. This, I finally realized, is meditation! It is why I feel so good after class. Why I leave with a renewed sense of perspective, a faith that things are all right, a feeling of having my obsessive thoughts wrung out of me like water from a sponge. Maybe someday I’ll graduate to achieving this level of focus in a seated meditation, but in the meantime I always have yoga. It’s taught me how to access a sense of calm that can carry me through any storm, real or imagined. I might have to remind myself of it when things get tough, but it is available to me any time I need it. This is the beauty and the gift of yoga. And I’m here to tell you, it works.

- Elaine McShulskis

About a year and a half ago I wrote a book called A Deliberate Pause: Entrepreneurship and its Moment in Human Progress. While its title hints that it’s about business, the progress it speaks to is not about how we get financially rich. While there are many lessons in the book, one of the greatest is one of the simplest – the power of taking a deliberate pause. This means setting aside assumptions, seeing whatever is there to be seen in that moment, and maximizing what’s possible with what you have, right then, right there. While a deliberate pause can take many forms for just as many people, mine is my yoga practice. It is a conscious and deliberate time to step back, to reflect, and to reengage “everything” in a wiser way. Admittedly, I first came to yoga more through someone else’s push than of my own volition (we need others, even if we don’t always remember or like that fact). And at the start I came mostly for the exercise (a lot of us do a lot of things for reasons and rewards that aren’t the most important ones; some of us are lucky enough to discover the real value along the way and reorient). What I eventually found, and what made me keep coming back, was that source of constant renewal. That practice of staying open, of seeking “what could be,” that habit of working with what you have and making “better” (even if it’s just better than the last time), is precisely what lies at the root of entrepreneurship, of our daily undertakings, and of human progress.

Bharadvajasana: The Sage’s Twist by Enid Kassner

Twisting postures are an important part of a well-rounded yoga practice. They allow us to rotate along the length of the spine -adding a lovely sensation to the forward bends, backbends, and side stretches of which the spine is capable. Bharadvajasana is different from most seated twists in that it is an “open” twist – that is, the belly is not compressed during the twist, but rather, it opens and expands. This makes the pose safe and comfortable for people of all body types, and generally can even be practiced during pregnancy, when many other twists are avoided.

The basic principle in all twists is to lengthen the spine as you inhale. This allows you to maximize the space between each of the vertebrae. On every exhalation, you can move into the twist more deeply – always listening to the sensations in your own body, which will tell you whether it’s time to come out or to intensify.

To begin, sit on the edge of a folded blanket with your knees bent and the soles of your feet on the floor in front of you. Drop both knees to the right. Your right hip will rest firmly on the blanket or floor and, depending on your body, your left hip may be slightly elevated. Your left foot can rest on top of the right or, if it’s more comfortable, you might prefer some space between your feet.

Make the posture your own, bringing an element of playfulness to it. You might try twisting sequentially through the lower back, middle back, upper back, and neck. Once you are fully in the twist, try rotating just the neck and head in the opposite direction. You could experiment with bending the right elbow and wrapping the arm behind your back, giving yourself a little extra leverage for a deeper twist.

As you breathe in, lengthen your spine, letting it grow straight up from the center of your hips. Try to avoid leaning either forward or backward. As you exhale, rotate the entire length of your spine toward the right. Keeping the arms extended, you can rest the back of your left hand along your right thigh and reach your right arm back behind you. Take another inhalation, trying to stretch your spine just a little longer. Be sure to include your neck: you might imagine it lengthening majestically like a giraffe. On your next exhalation, draw your collarbones apart so your chest remains broad and open.

As you unwind and come back to center, reach both arms toward the ceiling to even out the spine. Then drop your knees to the left and practice on the other side. After you’ve completed both sides, once more extend the spine to restore its symmetry. The ancient yogis must have greatly valued this twist since they named it after a legendary rishi or sage. As you energize your own spine through this posture, imagine some of that yogic wisdom flowing through you.

Teacher Feature Meet Corinne Krill

How did you come to yoga and to Sun & Moon? Over 11 years ago, curiosity and a desire for relaxation brought me to my first yoga class with Rixie Dennison at Sun & Moon, but I had to suspend my practice due to a high-risk pregnancy. After my third child was born, I began practicing again at Lifetime Fitness in Fairfax (of all places). I was blessed to have a beautiful teacher re-introduce me to yoga, and a serious approach brought me back to Sun & Moon. I began to volunteer in the Work Exchange program, and soon joined the Teacher Training program. Who has been most influential to your teaching? I have had the good fortune to study under a variety of teachers. Nischala Joy Devi and Erich Schiffmann have probably most influenced my teaching. They spoke directly to my heart with the gentle encouragement to follow my inner guide. We already have the answers and everything we need, we just need to slow down, follow the breath and listen to the Silent Teacher inside. In what direction do you see your teaching going? My yoga journey seems to be taking me in the direction of serving women and children. I’ve created breatheintothelight.blogspot.com as a place of sharing information, ideas, teachers, authors, musicians and happenings to inspire those on a path of healing. Most recently, I have been doing work with women survivors of sexual violence and abuse. I feel immensely blessed and honored to have the opportunity to work with courageous women who are healing the pain of their past. I co-lead an annual retreat for survivors called Camp Mabon, sponsored by the VSDVAA (Virginia Sexual and Domestic Violence Action Alliance). It is a weekend immersed in Mother Nature, with time spent in gentle yoga,

meditation, a nature hike, journaling and arts and crafts -- a wonderfully healing and uplifting experience for all. There is no therapy or experience sharing, so it’s a safe, sacred time of renewal. In May, I was also involved in SOAR (Speaking Out Against Rape)/SPA Day (Something Positive Afterwards), which focused on creativity, light movement and laughter. In addition, I am Radiant Child certified and co-teach a weekly kids class at my children’s elementary school, which has brought me immeasurable joy, and I am also currently studying Reiki. I believe it will be a nice complement to the trauma work I am doing, and I am excited to see where the Spirit takes me. What did you want to be when you grew up? Interestingly enough, I wanted to be a social worker. However, once I learned the salaries that social workers earned, I was discouraged and focused on a future in business. I have a master’s degree in Organizational Development and have worked professionally in HR Consulting and Retail and Sales Management. I have taken quite the circuitous route to get there, but I seem to be moving in the direction of the vocation I expressed as a child. It’s funny how yoga brings you back to your Self and your True Calling. What has been your most important lesson? The power of the breath to transform and heal. Most lessons we need to learn and emotions we need to feel are connected to the breath and its messages. The first time I heard, “allow the breath to lead the movement in your body” was the first step toward a physical awareness. The breath is truly the gateway to the soul; instead of spending time in the mind, the breath allows a freedom to “just be.” It’s a lifetime lesson. 5

Appropriate for beginning Ashtangastyle and power yoga practitioners. Vinyasa 2**: Adds more advanced poses and challenging transitions to the fast, flowing pace of Vinyasa 1. Open to Level 3+ students or students comfortable with a Vinyasa 1 practice who are ready to expand their focus and core strength. Appropriate for experienced Ashtanga-style and power yoga practitioners. Journey Through the Chakras: The yoga tradition speaks of seven spinning vortexes of energy which represent the windows to the soul. These sacred centers carry us on our journey toward a greater awareness and vitality. Each week addresses asana, pranayama, chanting and meditation to navigate the chakra system, moving up each week from the first chakra to the seventh.

* Classes at Level 3 and above involve more difficult levels of practice; teachers may invite students to join a lower level class when appropriate. **Vinyasa classes require completion of at least two sessions of Level 2.

General Information and Fees REGISTRATION INFORMATION Sun & Moon classes are offered weekly on a quarterly basis. We are a school of yoga with our classes structured to provide a wellrounded curriculum over an entire quarter. We recommend that students register for the full quarter, although we do allow students to attend with partial registration and/or on a drop-in basis. Please read all of our policy information before filling out the registration form on the following page. We accept beginners or new students at any time throughout the quarter as long as space is available in your class choice. If you are joining the quarter late, partial registration is available at a discount, provided that you sign up for six or more classes. Local students who have never been to Sun & Moon before, and are considering registering for classes, may take their first class free to determine if Sun & Moon is the right studio for them (ask our staff for terms and information). We accept Visa, Mastercard, Discover, checks or cash. A $35 fee will be charged for checks returned to Sun & Moon. REGISTER EARLY Registration is on a first-come, first-served basis. You have the option to do this by phone, mail, fax, or online. Please note, we will contact you only if the class you have chosen is full. SINGLE CLASS/DROP-INS A “drop-in” class is one you are not registered for. The rate for the "drop-in" class is dependent on whether you are currently registered for the quarter. We offer our students who are registered in the current quarter the discounted registration rate for an additional drop-in class. Students who are not registered in the current quarter pay the full drop-in fee. Note that though we always welcome drop-ins, occasionally space will not be available in a fully-subscribed class. FEES 75- and 90-minute classes: $15/class for minimum of 6 per quarter $20/class to drop-in 45- and 60-minute classes: $13/class for minimum of 6 per quarter $15/class to drop-in

MAKE-UPS We invite you to make up a missed class in any other yoga class within the current quarter at either studio. You may also make up classes in advance of a future absence within the current quarter. When you are doing a make-up, sign in at the front desk and inform the teacher. All make-ups must be taken during the quarter for which you are registered; they may not be carried over to the next quarter. Classes cancelled due to inclement weather may be made up during the quarter. Call the studio or visit our website to find out if your class has been cancelled. REFUNDS AND CREDIT Keeping in mind our liberal make-up policy, we understand that life circumstances sometimes get in the way, and yoga has to wait. If you decide you must ask for a credit or a refund, they are available for the number of classes remaining in the quarter, based on the date we receive your request (not the date you last attended). Therefore, please fill out a refund/ credit request form as soon as you know you can no longer attend your classes. Refunds will incur the following administrative fees: $40 for classes, $5 for workshops. Refunds are given by check and may take up to six weeks to process. A Letter of Credit is valid for one year from the date issued, and incurs no administrative fee. Letters of Credit apply to classes and workshops only, and cannot be redeemed for cash or merchandise. Letters of Credit for workshops are available up to the day before the event. No refunds or credits are given the day of or after the workshop. WHAT TO WEAR AND OTHER USEFUL INFORMATION Comfortable clothes such as shorts, footless tights or leggings with a t-shirt or tank-top. Please do not wear baggy sweats or pants (this inhibits the teacher’s ability to spot misalignments). Please remove shoes before entering the yoga rooms. We have men’s and women’s changing areas. No heavy perfume/cologne or noisy jewelry, please. For your safety, please leave valuables locked and hidden in your car. Cell phones must be silenced; for the benefit of all, we strongly discourage cell phones in the yoga room. Sun & Moon Yoga Studio, Ltd. reserves the right to dismiss (with or without a refund) any student who disrupts the harmony of the studio.

Sun & Moon In-Depth 2011-12 Advanced Studies/Teacher Training

4-3-2-Oneness: 2011 Summer of Bliss

September 2011 commences year two of our new program, which blends ancient wisdom with grounded contemporary counsel, expanding on the eight limbs of classical hatha yoga in modern and practical ways.

Join us this summer for a very special program that combines the pampering of a spa visit, the learning of a yogaschool intensive and the renewal of a personal retreat, all without ever leaving town or pausing your regular daytime routine.

We now offer programs at the 200, 350, and 500-hour levels, and are currently accepting applications for all three programs for 2011-12. For more details, visit the teacher training page of our website, or contact Alex Levin, Director of Teacher Training, at alex@sunandmoonstudio.com. "I'm profoundly grateful for the wonderful support of Sun & Moon's faculty. The program is radically deepening my practice and opening yoga/life windows and doors." -- Julie Rogers, 2010-11 graduate
