Spring 2012
Everyday Gurus by Amir Eckhart Tolle writes, “I have lived with many Zen masters, all of them cats.” Over the years I have studied various meditation practices with many different techniques: sitting vs. lying down vs. walking, eyes open vs. eyes closed, silent vs. chanting, etc. Regardless of the method, the objective is the same – to create a non-judgmental observation of the present moment. And from this usually comes a feeling of utter calm and bliss. It’s that feeling we get when we’re completely absorbed in doing something we love. We lose track of all sense of time and exist solely in the present. For many of us, this is a state we find naturally when we connect with our pets. I have always found animals to be so much closer to nature and to the divine than humans. I can spend hours observing my cats and be easily transported into a state of presence and bliss. Is there anything more gratifying than a purring cat? Anything more peaceful than a sleeping dog curled at your legs? It’s during these special times when I find it quite easy to be fully present and connected with the universe. Our pets invite us to take a break from all the things we things we think we have to be doing and allow us to just enjoy the present moment. And it’s during those moments that we can simply be who we really are. Almost by accident, my two cats have become my daily yoga gurus. Every day they remind me of these lessons: • Live in the moment. Our pets don’t spend time analyzing the past and worrying about the future. They are fully focused on whatever they are doing, and never anxious about whether they’ll get the same treatment tomorrow. My cats teach me to stop wasting time worrying about tomorrow; they seem to have an innate understanding that there is an order to the universe, and although we may not be able to see it clearly, we can trust in the ultimate outcome. • Unconditional love. By emulating how our pets behave toward us, we can build more trusting, loving, and caring relationships with other people in our lives. My cats are masters of the art of love, and they constantly remind me what it means to have a caring relationship. My cats may not always understand why a routine has changed, but they always trust me to do what’s in their best interest. • Take a laid back attitude toward life. We get so caught up in our daily lives and rarely take time to relax. Spending time with my cats is the best stress relief I know. • “Hairballs happen.” When something bad happens, my cats take it all in stride. I’m reminded that everything, good or bad, is part of life – we can go forward joyless, railing, complaining, and full of woe, or we can take things as they come. There are important lessons that our pets teach us, if only we are willing to listen. 2
Voices from the Path by teen students Alana Ryan, Anna Gibbs, and Anna LeValley I started taking yoga classes at Sun & Moon in the beginning of the eighth grade. I found out about it through a neighbor who took classes there and recommended it to me. At the time, I wasn’t really involved in any sports so I thought it would be a good extracurricular activity. I also took yoga to help deal with any stress from school or homework as well as just to relax and become more flexible. I really enjoy the class because it has a very quiet and soothing atmosphere and everyone has been really nice. When I was in middle school during gym class, all the girls would be forced to do a unit of yoga and at first I did not think it was very enjoyable because of all the laughing and the uncomfortable environment. My yoga is different now. I’m actually able to relax, and I’ve learned ways that yoga can help outside of class. Recently I came home from a rough day at school and had a load of homework. Before I started it, I did some yoga poses to get my circulation going and also practiced some meditation. Afterwards, I felt much more refreshed and energized. Yoga helps me feel more at peace with myself, as if I can handle anything life throws at me. – Alana Ryan, 14 Taking after my mother, a life-long yogi, I have grown to absolutely love yoga. Every time I do it is a relatively different experience for me, depending on my energy and mood, but there is always one variable that remains constant: the sense of pure peace and comfort that I receive, of being in the moment. That state of temporary being is exactly what my wonderful teen class instructor, Annie, teaches and has encouraged me to focus on. When my life is a chaotic mess attempting to mass destruct any positivity left in my mentality, I do what I've learned in my yoga class: just breathe. So, I do. I close my eyes, focus on my breath, and – even if only for a moment – that chaotic mess disappears. That’s the most healing thing I’ve ever been taught to do.

I have applied that method I learned in class to my life many times. Specifically, I was taking a test in school, and I was completely blanking. I knew the information, I had studied it and engraved it into my brain, but I could not for the life of me come up with the answers. I began freaking out – I needed to do well, and this was a hit or miss as far as my grade went. Then, I paused. I put down my pencil, placed my hands in my lap, sat up tall, closed my eyes, and focused on the breath moving through me. I flushed out every other thought, every other sound, everything else, and for a moment, I was at peace. I could focus on my breath, so I knew I could focus on this test. I opened my eyes, took another look at the test sitting in front of me, and sure enough, I recalled everything I had studied. I most definitely would not have been able to do that without the help of this weekly class, and Annie. Two years ago, I signed up for this class at Sun & Moon, and I’m incredibly glad I did. It has completely altered my life in a positive way and for that I am truly grateful. Namaste – Anna Gibbs, 16
I began taking yoga classes at Sun & Moon when I was in eighth grade, and since then, yoga has been nothing but a positive experience for me; during times of stress, anger, or sadness, yoga has never failed to bring me back to a place of inner peace. Throughout my life, I have felt selfconscious about not being the "best" in the room – with yoga, I found a place where comparison to others didn't matter. What mattered was doing my best, pushing to be the best version of myself, and accepting what doesn't go as planned. I've translated this to other aspects of my life, and it has helped me navigate all kinds of situations. Yoga practice and philosophy has helped me accept myself for who I am. – Anna LeValley, 16
We are pleased to feature stories from our students about how and why yoga matters. If you have a “Voice” that you’d be willing to share with our community, please email it in about 200 words, with a high resolution photo if you have one, to voices@ sunandmoonstudio.com. 3
Prasarita Padottanasana: Wide-Standing Forward Fold by Enid Kassner
Elaine McShulskis demonstrates prasarita padottanasana. Photo by Christie Zepeda Photography
Have you ever marveled at a toddler standing with her hands and feet on the floor, spread wide, rear end up in the air? Maybe she enjoys the new perspective of looking at the world upside down from between her legs. Toddlers make it look so effortless with their stretchy muscles and still-forming bones. These young “natural yogis” easily find joy in yoga’s widestanding forward fold – prasarita padottanasana.
Even if your muscles and bones have tightened up since your toddler days – and whose haven’t – you can still enjoy this posture. Its primary benefits include an intense stretch of the hamstring and inner thigh muscles, and an opportunity to strengthen muscles all the way from hips to feet. It also helps to make space between all the vertebrae of the spine. A nice preparation is to stand in front of a table or countertop with your feet about 3 to 4 feet apart. The inner edges may be parallel to each other or you can turn the feet “pigeontoed” (heels slightly wider than the toes). Press into the outer edges of the feet and draw the arches upward so that the feet make active contact with the floor. Pull the kneecaps up so that the legs are active from feet to hips. Inhale and lengthen your spine. Then, placing your fingertips on your hip bones, fold forward from the hip crease, keeping a long spine. You can place your forearms, one on top of the other, on the flat surface before you, and rest your head on your forearms. As you actively draw your sit bones away from your head, you may begin to feel a stretch on your hamstrings. To move more deeply into the posture, bring a block (or stack of books) to the floor in front of you. This time, as you hinge forward from the hips, bring the hands to your props or the floor, keeping the spine approximately parallel to the floor. Position your hands directly under your shoulders. Pause here, checking in with various parts of your body with each long, smooth breath. If your hamstrings cannot get a comfortable stretch, bend the knees a bit, or go back to the first version described above. If you are completely comfortable, you can move into the final stages of the posture, in which the head rests on the floor. However, the spine should still be long and the feet should not be so far apart that you lose stability. You can try wrapping your index and middle fingers around the big toe of each foot and use the strength of your arms to pull yourself just a tad deeper. No matter which variation you practice, on each inhalation lengthen the spine; on each exhalation release and relax into the asana. Experience the childlike wonder of turning your perspective upside down! To come out of the pose, put a slight bend in your knees and return to standing with your spine long. Bring your feet back to parallel and take a breath.

Teacher Feature Meet Kristin Heinz What brought you to yoga? I honestly don't know. However, I do know that once I tried it, I was hooked. I started many years ago taking a gym yoga class whenever I could escape the office at a decent hour. I remember I liked the light-heartedness of my first teacher who kept yoga approachable and fun. Shortly thereafter, while navigating a major career change, I picked up a part-time job at lululemon athletica. I spent a summer getting paid to attend yoga classes (by far the best job I've ever had!). It was then that my desire for a once-weekly yoga fix turned into a full-blown addiction. The more I learned, the more I wanted to know. And, the more I knew, the more I wanted to share my knowledge with others. Why vinyasa? For me, vinyasa, more than any other style of yoga, transports me to a meditative state where I can slow my mind and simply move with my breath. By coordinating movement to the breath, I find it easier to relax my overanalytical mind and remain present. Further, I enjoy the creativity of weaving poses together in new and imaginative ways. I've always dreamed of being an Olympic gymnast or a professional dancer and I figure vinyasa yoga is the closest I'm ever going to get to satisfying these childhood dreams. Where do you find your teaching inspiration? My fellow teachers. I usually try to take several yoga classes every week – different styles, different teachers, different studios. I often pull fresh new ideas for postures and sequences from these classes. The breadth and depth of knowledge among the teaching community is immense. I think the following quote sums up these sentiments well, "I teach for myself; I practice for my students." What do you consider yoga's greatest gifts? Its miraculous ability to change one's body and mind. I've always been reasonably athletic, but my strength, flexibility, and posture are infinitely better after incorporating yoga into my daily schedule. As for my mind, the lessons are innumerable – connectedness, impermanence, sacredness – to name just a few. The practice of yoga and the enduring wisdom it offers has nourished my soul through the vicissitudes of life. What's next? I recently completed a Masters in Social Work and I'm currently working towards a license in clinical therapy. I believe this discipline, like yoga, teaches mindfulness, increases self-knowledge, and helps expand personal boundaries. I also completed training and certification in Thai Yoga Bodywork this past summer. I use much of this technique doing hands-on assisting in classes and in one-on-one sessions with private clients. I would like to know more about the biomechanics of the body and plan to take more training in yoga therapeutics this year. I believe all of theses disciplines are interrelated and assist one's process of self-actualization. I look forward to incorporating these and other mindbody healing modalities into my future practice and teaching. What do you want your students to experience in class? A loving respect of their bodies, a quieting of their minds, and a sense of unending joy. 5

Kids: Play and work with poses to increase flexibility and strength, develop coordination and posture, and explore relaxation and stress reduction tools. Yoga stories and/or visualizations will be presented in each class. For elementary ages. Mat Pilates 1: This exercise system focuses on correct breathing, posture, and core strengthening. No admittance after week three without instructor permission. Mat Pilates 2: The progression in this class is faster than Pilates 1 and provides an energetic, full body workout. Prior Pilates experience necessary. Meditation: Learn to cultivate a deeply satisfying inner quiet and mindfulness. Includes short dharma talks and various meditation tools and practices. Open to beginners and advanced students alike. No registration necessary. Middle and High Schoolers: A playful yet disciplined practice of asana, pranayama, and relaxation, intended to help reduce stress and promote strength, selfesteem, focus, balance, and positive body images. Moms & Babies: Bring along your baby, from infant to almost crawling, for this welcoming postnatal class that emphasizes how yoga can help you stay physically and emotionally strong and centered during baby’s first months. Prenatal Yoga: An all-levels course to support and empower expectant mothers. Learn ways to ease aches and pains, make the body comfortable during pregnancy, and use the breath to calm and steady the mind. T’ai Chi: An introduction to Yang-style T'ai chi —a martial art emphasizing breath, focus, and relaxation. By practicing a sequence of slow, gentle, and flowing movements combined with mental concentration, the class will learn Cheng Man-Ch'ing's 37 posture form.
Toddlers Together: A fun romp for caregivers and toddlers. We will incorporate asana, stories, music, and creative movement to experience the joy and heartfelt wisdom of yoga with a child-like flow. 16mos to 4 yrs, adult/child. Vinyasa 1**: A fast-paced, challenging practice that builds stamina and strength through a series of flowing poses. Students should be comfortable coming quickly into standing poses with good alignment and should be practicing at Level 2 or above. Appropriate for beginning Ashtanga-style and power yoga practitioners. Vinyasa 2**: Adds more advanced poses and challenging transitions to the fast, flowing pace of Vinyasa 1. Open to Level 3+ students or those comfortable with Vinyasa 1 and ready to expand. Appropriate for experienced Ashtangastyle and power yoga practitioners. Yoga on the Ball: Uses a large exercise ball to help increase muscle strength, flexibility, balance and deep core work. Yoga for the 12 Steps: Traditional 12-Step programs offer a remedy for a wide range of dependencies, but they do not address the physical dimension. In this class we practice movement, breathing, and conscious relaxation to develop awareness of and balance between the physical, mental, emotional, and spiritual. Both yoga and 12-Step philosophies are woven to provide a framework for authentic living and personal growth. This is not a meeting. It’s a weekly space for anyone seeking a retreat from the challenges of life. * Classes at Level 3 and above involve more difficult levels of practice; teachers may invite students to join a lower level class when appropriate. **Vinyasa classes are not recommended until a student has completed at least two quarters of Level 2.

General Information and Fees REGISTRATION INFORMATION Sun & Moon classes are offered weekly on a quarterly basis. We are a school of yoga with our classes structured to provide a wellrounded curriculum over an entire quarter. We recommend that students register for the full quarter, although we do allow students to attend with partial registration and/or on a drop-in basis. Please read all of our policy information before filling out the registration form on the following page. We accept beginners or new students at any time throughout the quarter as long as space is available in your class choice. If you are joining the quarter late, partial registration is available at a discount, provided that you sign up for six or more classes. Local students who have never been to Sun & Moon before, and are considering registering for classes, may take their first class free to determine if Sun & Moon is the right studio for them (ask our staff for terms and information). We accept Visa, Mastercard, Discover, checks, or cash. A $35 fee will be charged for checks returned to Sun & Moon. REGISTER EARLY Registration is on a first-come, first-served basis. You have the option to register online, or by mail, fax, or phone. Please note, we will contact you only if the class you have chosen is full. SINGLE CLASS/DROP-INS A “drop-in” class is one you are not registered for. The rate for the drop-in class is dependent on whether you are currently registered for the quarter. We offer our students who are registered in the current quarter the discounted registration rate for an additional drop-in class. Students who are not registered in the current quarter pay the full drop-in fee. Note that though we always welcome drop-ins, occasionally space will not be available in a fully-subscribed class. FEES 75- and 90-minute classes: $15/class for minimum of 6 per quarter $20/class to drop-in 45- and 60-minute classes: $13/class for minimum of 6 per quarter $15/class to drop-in

MAKE-UPS We invite you to make up a missed class in any other class within the current quarter at either studio. You may also make up classes in advance of a future absence within the current quarter. When you are doing a make-up, sign in at the front desk and inform the teacher. All make-ups must be taken during the quarter for which you are registered; they may not be carried over to the next quarter. Classes cancelled due to inclement weather may be made up during the quarter. Call the studio or visit our website to find out if your class has been cancelled. REFUND AND CREDIT POLICY Keeping in mind our liberal make-up policy, we understand that life circumstances sometimes get in the way, and yoga has to wait. If you decide you must ask for a credit or a refund, they are available for the number of classes remaining in the quarter, based on the date we receive your request (not the date you last attended). Therefore, please fill out a refund/credit request form as soon as you know you can no longer attend your classes. Refunds will incur the following administrative fees: $40 for classes, $5 for workshops. Refunds are given by check and may take up to six weeks to process. A Letter of Credit is valid for one year from the date issued, and incurs no administrative fee. Letters of Credit apply to classes and workshops only, and cannot be redeemed for cash or merchandise. Letters of Credit for workshops are available up to the day before the event. No refunds or credits are given the day of or after the workshop. WHAT TO WEAR AND OTHER USEFUL INFORMATION Comfortable clothes such as shorts, footless tights, or leggings with a t-shirt or tank top. Please do not wear baggy sweats or pants (this inhibits the teacher’s ability to spot misalignments). Please remove shoes before entering the yoga rooms. We have men’s and women’s changing areas. No heavy perfume/cologne or noisy jewelry, please. For your safety, please leave valuables locked and hidden in your car. Cell phones must be silenced; for the benefit of all, we strongly discourage cell phones in the yoga room. Sun & Moon Yoga Studio, Ltd. reserves the right to dismiss (with or without a refund) any student who disrupts the harmony of the class and/or studio environment.
