Winter 2014
Comfort is Overrated by Amir
In yoga class, I often discuss the importance of distinguishing between discomfort and pain. As we hold a yoga pose, we might feel a healthy discomfort as we progressively stretch and lengthen muscle fibers. The discomfort of working muscles to the correct extent and with proper alignment is drastically different than the pain of forcing our body to do something beyond its capacity. Yoga poses should never cause pain – if anything negative arises, it should only reveal tightness, inflexibility, or patterns of dysfunction. If we try to ‘push through the pain,’ we are actually working against ourselves. However, if we work in the areas of discomfort, we can gradually expand our range of motion and bring our bodies into alignment. The same thing applies to our emotional and mental states, and yoga has a way of uncovering the roots of some of the most common, stress-producing problems. Consider procrastination, lack of exercise, eating poorly, over-committing to activities, or lack of sleep. The root cause behind each of these is discomfort. For some people, eating healthy food is uncomfortable, or sitting in meditation, exercising, saying “no” to people, or even just completing a chore at hand. Addressing these problems isn’t uncomfortable in an intensely painful way, it simply takes us out of our routine comfort zones. Discomfort is not an enemy to be feared, and just a little bit of discomfort can move us toward resolution of many problems. When we’re uncomfortable, we are likely to be trying something new, we’re learning, we’re expanding, we’re becoming more than we were before. Discomfort is a catalyst for growth. It makes us yearn for something more. It forces us to change, stretch, and adapt. Discomfort is a sign we’re making progress. Many people think that comfort leads to happiness. Too often, superficial comfort leads to self-absorption, boredom, and discontent. We lay about on the sofa, eating familiar and unhealthy comfort foods, and then our health suffers, leading to a deeper yearning for comfort and reinforcing the tendency for more unhealthy indulgence. We have a choice: we can either be comfortable and stagnate, or we can stretch ourselves – become uncomfortable – and grow. Ultimately, we'll experience the comfort we were seeking all along.

Full quarter prices: $15/class for 75- and 90-minute classes $13/class for 45- and 60-minute classes PARTIAL REGISTRATION If you’re joining the quarter late, or you know you’ll be traveling and unable to attend several classes, you may register for a partial quarter, with a minimum of six classes. MAKE-UPS Consider your registered class your “homeroom” for yoga. However, if you can’t make it to your registered class, you can make it up in any other class within the current quarter at either studio. Make-ups in advance of a future absence are allowed. When you are doing a make-up, sign in at the front desk and inform the teacher. All make-ups must be taken during the quarter for which you are registered; they may not be carried over to the next quarter. REFUND AND CREDIT POLICY Keeping in mind our liberal make-up policy, we understand that life circumstances sometimes get in the way, and yoga has to wait. If you decide you must ask for a credit or a refund, they are available for the number of classes remaining in the quarter, based on the date we receive your request (not the date you last attended). Therefore, please fill out a refund/credit request form as soon as you know you can no longer attend your classes. Refunds will incur the following administrative fees: $20 for classes or 10% the cost of a workshops. Refunds by check may take up to 3 weeks to process; refunds by credit card may take up to one week. Letters of Credit are valid for one year from the date issued, and incur no administrative fee. Letters of Credit apply to classes and workshops only, and cannot be redeemed for cash or merchandise. Workshop refunds or letters of credit are available up to the day before the event. No refunds or credits are given the day of or after the workshop. WHAT TO WEAR AND OTHER USEFUL INFORMATION Wear comfortable “work-out” clothes; nothing too baggy so teachers can see your alignment. We practice barefoot and keep our floors clean; leave your shoes in the cubbies before entering the yoga rooms. We have men’s and women’s changing areas. No heavy perfume/cologne or noisy jewelry. For your safety, leave valuables locked and hidden in your car. Cell phones must be silenced; for the benefit of all, we strongly discourage cell phones in the yoga room. Sun & Moon Yoga Studio, Ltd. reserves the right to dismiss (with or without a refund) any student who disrupts the harmony of the class or studio. EMERGENCY CLOSINGS Classes cancelled due to inclement weather or other emergency will not be rescheduled, but may be made up in any other class during the quarter. During severe weather conditions or other emergencies, we will post all cancellations on the studio website and on the outgoing voicemail at 703.525.9642.

Teacher Spotlight:
Mysore style yoga is an unled class where students arrive any
Tova Steiner and
time during the specified hours. The teacher greets students
Morning Mysore
Yoga postures, breathing, and gazing points. The teacher
one-by-one gets them started on a set series of Ashtanga circulates quietly, giving individual adjustments and tailoring the series according to each individual’s level and needs. Teachers are able to give customized, one-on-one attention, which in turn allows students to develop independence and responsibility for their own practice. The student’s inward focus is an opportunity to foster the meditative state we seek from yoga. This style of yoga is an ancient form of practice taught by the grandfather of modern yoga, Krishnamacharya, to Sri Krishna Pattabhi Jois, one of his most prominent students. While Quaker meeting was really lovely, I always vaguely felt like I wasn’t a good enough person to be there. I had too many issues! Practicing yoga pushed me in the direction of figuring out what all those issues were, and if not actually solving them, certainly addressing them in a way that felt productive. I think it’s really important too to say that it doesn’t have to be a spiritual practice for everyone. My very first teacher would say whatever you’re coming to yoga class for, that’s what you’ll get, and I completely agree.
What is it like studying in India? Humbling. Many people love going to Mysore; I find it a really difficult place to be. It’s best to go with an open mind and no expectations, which was a lot easier on the first trip than on subsequent trips, after I’d been exposed to the poverty and struggle of so many people there. But it’s also wonderful. An essay I read once in The New York Times referred to “thin places,” where you feel closer to God, and definitely I feel that in India, even if it’s not always in a beautiful way.
How was it to learn from Pattabhi Jois’s daughter Saraswati? My first trip to India was right after Guruji passed away, and I studied with Saraswati. She is old, wise, and incredible. In her hands, you get the sense that although tradition and techniques are important, there’s this real ease and lack of worry. She lived right above the shala [yoga school] and sometimes she would come down to teach in her pajamas, and you really felt like a welcome guest in her house.
How would you describe the values in the Ashtanga yoga practice? Ashtanga is much more concerned with energetics than the outward form or appearance of a posture. You can see a lot about people by the way they move and their relationship to their body. It’s interesting to see things that come more easily to people and things folks have more trouble with. As a teacher, it’s incredible to be able to watch students’ progress, and see what comes as pleasant surprises when they’re willing to work hard and be patient. It’s fun and inspiring.
Is this a fast-paced practice or slow and steady? The “rule” is that you hold each pose for five breaths, but Guruji always said that if you’re treating or discovering something inside your body, you should hold the pose for as long as necessary. You go at your own pace, and not at someone else’s count. This affords us the time to address what we need to work on rather trying to keep up with somebody else. 7
