Summer 2014
The Forest Floor by Annie Moyer Picture yourself . . . on a boat on a river, with tangerine dreams . . . oops, I got distracted. Beatles song lyrics swirling in my head like they do, along with ten thousand other random bits of memory and work and family and future and the business of daily life all billowing into the mix. Again. Picture yourself on a treetop. You've climbed up this tree as you do every day. Grasping the swaying branches, you remark to yourself how precarious these branches feel here at the tippy top. The next treetop might have thicker branches, more stability. So you jump and grab. It begins to rain. You get wet. The sun comes out. You get hot. Night falls. Cold. Next day is windy. Hang on tighter! Hour after hour, day after day, the same thought occurs – it's bound to be steadier on the next tree. Jump! Hold! Nope, same unpredictable and vulnerable existence. One day, a wise inner voice suggests, try climbing down! You try a few tentative descents, but halt halfway down. It’s too scary, it takes too long, and what if what's down there is worse than what you're already used to dealing with, maybe even excelling at, up top? So you climb right back up, and recommence the clinging, the unsteady swirling. And on another day, it gets too damn hard, you can't cling another moment, and you re-examine the options for coming down. One halting step, one deep breath at a time, your feet connect to the thickening trunk, and you ease yourself to the earth. Your spine lodged comfortably and steady against the base of this tree, your breath deepens, your heart slows, your muscles ease. You look up and notice the sun or the rain or the nightfall or the wind and you wake up to the truth that all those shifts don’t hold as much sway down here on the forest floor. It's quiet. It's quiet. It's quiet. If your life is anything like mine – busy, full, challenging at times, the treetop analogy may resonate. Maybe you can describe with precision each treetop and its unique environment. They all offer some distinct quality: a heart-quickening challenge, a heartwrenching grief, a heart-full of joy. And if you've had moments of solid quiet and ease, the forest floor may also resonate. Yes – the business of daily life must be conducted, and often/usually requires a quick and decisive climb to the top. And, also, yes – we forget to climb back down. We forget that we even know how. Consider this summer spending more time on the forest floor. Find your favorite "tree" and befriend it at the base of its trunk. Notice what it is to be held steady by the presence of something larger and far more permanent than you. Yoga Sutra 1.2 (right off the bat!) tells us that yoga is the stilling of the mind's fluctuations. And, to paraphrase, after 194 additional statements, it says the best, and only, place where the mind can truly be still is inside of us, deep in our own heart. On the forest floor.

Sun & Moon Yoga Studio is among the country’s premier schools for the study and practice of yoga. We’ve shared our teachings with over 10,000 students since the early 1990s. We embrace a holistic approach to this ancient system of health and healing, offering our cherished students a well-rounded yoga education and practice to help them feel better inside and out. Our philosophy is based on an eclectic blend of hatha yoga traditions with instructors who share a strong passion for teaching and a commitment to giving students a nurturing home for exploring the art and science of yoga.
While this schedule is current as of printing, there may be changes. Please check our website at sunandmoonstudio.com for the most up-to-date information. 5
General Information and Fees REGISTRATION INFORMATION AND FEES Sun & Moon is a school of yoga, with weekly classes structured to provide a wellrounded curriculum over an entire quarter. We run four quarters per year; depending on the season, the length of the quarter varies. We welcome beginners and new students at any time. Your first class is free! Once you decide to sign up for a class, you can register online at sunandmoonstudio.com; or by phone, mail, or in person. We accept credit cards, checks or cash. If you’re redeeming a gift certificate or studio credit, please do so by phone or in person. We offer the following options for class registrations:
MAKE-UPS Consider your registered class your “homeroom” for yoga. However, if you can’t make it to your registered class, you can make it up in any other class within the current quarter at either studio. Make-ups in advance of a future absence are allowed. When you are doing a make-up, sign in at the front desk and inform the teacher. All make-ups must be taken during the quarter for which you are registered; they may not be carried over to the next quarter. REFUND AND CREDIT POLICY Keeping in mind our liberal make-up policy, we understand that life circumstances sometimes get in the way, and yoga has to wait. If you decide you must ask for a credit or a refund, they are available for the number of classes remaining in the quarter, based on the date we receive your request (not the date you last attended). Therefore, please fill out a refund/credit request form as soon as you know you can no longer attend your classes. Refunds will incur the following administrative fees: $20 for classes or 10% the cost of a workshop. Refunds by check may take up to 3 weeks to process; refunds by credit card may take up to one week. Letters of Credit are valid for one year from the date issued, and incur no administrative fee. Letters of Credit apply to classes and workshops only, and cannot be redeemed for cash or merchandise. Workshop refunds or letters of credit are available up to the day before the event. No refunds or credits are given the day of or after the workshop.
FULL QUARTER REGISTRATION We recommend this option, as it will give you the best possible yoga education and experience. Regular practice and connection to your yoga community form the cornerstone of Sun & Moon’s unique yoga environment. Full quarter prices: $15/class for 75- and 90-minute classes $13/class for 45- and 60-minute classes PARTIAL REGISTRATION If you’re joining the quarter late, or you know you’ll be traveling and unable to attend several classes, you may register for a partial quarter, with a minimum of six classes. Partial registration prices: $16/class for 75- and 90-minute classes $14/class for 45- and 60-minute classes SINGLE CLASS/DROP-INS To accommodate students with unpredictable schedules, we allow anyone to drop-in anytime (on rare occasions, space will not be available in a fully registered class). Drop-in prices: $20/class for 75- and 90-minute classes $15/class for 45- and 60-minute classes
WHAT TO WEAR AND OTHER USEFUL INFORMATION Wear comfortable “work-out” clothes; nothing too baggy so teachers can see your alignment. We practice barefoot and keep our floors clean; leave your shoes in the cubbies before entering the yoga rooms. We have men’s and women’s changing areas. No heavy perfume/cologne or noisy jewelry. For your safety, leave valuables locked and hidden in your car. Cell phones must be silenced; for the benefit of all, we strongly discourage cell phones in the yoga room. Sun & Moon Yoga Studio, Ltd. reserves the right to dismiss (with or without a refund) any student who disrupts the harmony of the class or studio.
EXTRA DROP-INS FOR REGISTERED STUDENTS If you’re a registered student (full or partial) seeking an additional class, you may drop-in to any class at the partial registration price listed above. MULTIPLE CLASS DISCOUNTS – NEW BENEFIT!! Register for two full quarter classes and take $50 off your total; register for three full quarter classes and take off $108.
EMERGENCY CLOSINGS Classes cancelled due to inclement weather or other emergency will not be rescheduled, but may be made up in any other class during the quarter. During severe weather conditions or other emergencies, we will post all cancellations on the studio website and on the outgoing voicemail at 703.525.9642.

Voices from the Path: The Patient Monkey by Jacque Blundell
In a recent newsletter, Amir referred to yoga and the “monkey mind,” and I thought, “oh yeah, that’s me!” I even know what my monkey looks like. One of those tiny organ grinder monkeys complete with cymbals, a little red suit, and a tiny hat. I’ve been taking Judith Lyon’s class for years and it has been a blessing. We work hard and pay attention to the myriad details that make up proper alignment. I’m usually concentrating so hard that the monkey stops clanging around in my brain and stands on the edge of the mat. He’s just waiting for my concentration to slip and then he’s right back at it, clanging away on those blasted cymbals. But this winter, something else happened. Between the snow and being sick, I had way too many classes to make up. I decided to try Alex Levin’s Yin Yoga class. I couldn’t imagine how I would manage to be still and quiet for minutes at a time. But I discovered that it was a different kind of concentration. Sort of “nonconcentration.” For the first couple of poses, the monkey was there on the edge of my mat. Quiet, but there. And then, as my body and mind finally relaxed, it was almost as if I could see the little dickens get frustrated, put his hands on his tiny hips, and stalk out the door. I have this image in my mind now of my monkey, sitting on the chairs by the water cooler, waiting for me to finish class. Once I actually made it to the front and put on my shoes before I heard the cymbals clanging and saw him scampering down the hallway. Maybe one day, I’ll actually make it out of the building without him.

Sun & Moon In-Depth: 2014-15 Our In-Depth program offers opportunities for privileged study with some of the nation’s premier master teachers, sets the stage for life-long study, and focuses on the rich and deep traditions of classical yoga. “What always struck me, at the end of an immersion or a meet-up or a class observation or a workshop, is the depth of knowledge and understanding that teachers were sharing with us and the care with which they offered their lessons and guidance. Throughout the entire program, I felt this tremendous ease and acceptance, patience, gentleness, lightness and kindness, really without exception.” ~ Lisa Stucky, May 2013
