Spring 2015
Only Right Now by Amir In a song by one of my favorite bands, The Afghan Whigs, they ponder “the things a mind can do to you.” Along with all the creative and bright things the mind is capable of, it can also turn any encounter into a stressful mess. Life is unpredictable, and when an unexpected circumstance arises, we have a tendency to label it as bad. However, it’s entirely possible that the only truly “bad” part of what’s happening is simply our own mind projecting into the future, layering on all the potential negatives. In essence, we create our own suffering. If, instead, we strip away repeated thoughts about past events and repeated fears of the future, we can rest easily and safely in the moment. Daily life can be stressful enough. If you’re taking a walk with a friend right now, does it make much sense to be worrying about a meeting at work next week? It probably won’t help you prepare for the meeting, but more importantly, you’ll miss out on enjoying the moment with your friend. Once the walk is over, you can then take your cleared and relaxed mind home to sit down and fully prepare for the meeting, having given both your full attention. Eckhart Tolle says, “You can always cope with the present moment, but you cannot cope with something that is only a mind projection - you cannot cope with the future.” Everything that’s not present is a collection of memories that form the past and visions that imagine the future. And all of this exists in our own heads. If we are always thinking about the past or the future, we are ignoring the reality of what is in front of us at this moment, and in so doing, we are invariably missing out on rich opportunities. It’s as if we are fighting reality, and it’s a battle we can’t win. Yoga asana is one way to practice drawing attention to the present moment or experience, whatever it may be. For example, next time you practice triangle pose, notice how your legs ground you to the earth. Notice how your breath moves through your body. Notice the twisting of your belly and the opening of your chest. Do all this without concern for the way triangle post may have felt last week, or what you hope it will look like next year, or what you think is “wrong with you” that prevents you from doing it the way you want to. In this way, the yoga mat becomes a laboratory for awareness. The more you practice being present, the more yousmile. will be. As often as necessary, remind yourself to Roger and Rebecca take a quick seatpresent and a warm unconditionally embrace the wonder and opportunity that each moment holds.

We are connection. We are community. We are grateful. Yoga has changed a lot since the early 90’s, when you could count on one hand the number of yoga studios in the DC metro area. Many (repeat, many) studios have come since then, and a quite a few have come and gone, but the ones who were

MULTIPLE CLASS DISCOUNTS – NEW BENEFIT!! Register for two full quarter classes and take $50 off your total; register for three full quarter classes and take off $108.
MAKE-UPS Consider your registered class your “homeroom” for yoga. However, if you can’t make it to your registered class, you can make it up in any other class within the current quarter at either studio. Make-ups in advance of a future absence are allowed. When you are doing a make-up, sign in at the front desk and inform the teacher. All make-ups must be taken during the quarter for which you are registered; they may not be carried over to the next quarter. REFUND AND CREDIT POLICY Keeping in mind our liberal make-up policy, we understand that life circumstances sometimes get in the way, and yoga has to wait. If you decide you must ask for a credit or a refund, they are available for the number of classes remaining in the quarter, based on the date we receive your request (not the date you last attended). Therefore, please fill out a refund/credit request form as soon as you know you can no longer attend your classes. Refunds will incur the following administrative fees: $20 for classes or 10% the cost of a workshop. Refunds by check may take up to 3 weeks to process; refunds by credit card may take up to one week. Letters of Credit are valid for one year from the date issued, and incur no administrative fee. Letters of Credit apply to classes and workshops only, and cannot be redeemed for cash or merchandise. Workshop refunds or letters of credit are available up to the day before the event. No refunds or credits are given the day of or after the workshop. WHAT TO WEAR AND OTHER USEFUL INFORMATION Wear comfortable “work-out” clothes; nothing too baggy so teachers can see your alignment. We practice barefoot and keep our floors clean; leave your shoes in the cubbies before entering the yoga rooms. We have men’s and women’s changing areas. No heavy perfume/cologne or noisy jewelry. For your safety, leave valuables locked and hidden in your car. Cell phones must be silenced; for the benefit of all, we strongly discourage cell phones in the yoga room. Sun & Moon Yoga Studio, Ltd. reserves the right to dismiss (with or without a refund) any student who disrupts the harmony of the class or studio. EMERGENCY CLOSINGS Classes cancelled due to inclement weather or other emergency will not be rescheduled, but may be made up in any other class during the quarter. During severe weather conditions or other emergencies, we will post all cancellations on the studio website and on the outgoing voicemail at 703.525.9642.

Do You Have a Yoga Memory to Share? We’ll be sharing lots of stories all year long as part of our 20th anniversary celebration. If you have a yoga moment that lives in your memory as sweet, moving, or transformational, and if Sun & Moon was part of that moment, we’d love hear from you. Would you, could you, share with us, in written form (100 words or less) or video form (from your own camera or ours – two minutes or less)? Send your story or your questions about it to annie@sunandmoonstudio.com
Mine the Depths of Yoga Our In-Depth programs (200-hour Foundations, 350-hour Fluency, and 500-hour Proficiency) offer privileged study with some of the nation’s premier master teachers, set the stage for life-long study, and focus on the rich and deep traditions of classical yoga. If you’re ready to delve deeply into the art and science of living and teaching your yoga, contact Alex Levin, Director of Teacher Training, at alex@sunandmoonstudio.com and also find more details at the “teacher training” tab on our website.
